It's 1968 and love is in the air in the small coastal town of Cambridge, California.
Donna Peterson, the preacher's daughter, has her entire life ahead of her and the future looks promising. But things aren’t as they seem in Cambridge. A tangled web of secrets threaten to destroy the lives of each person involved – Donna, her boyfriend Bobby, and Rick, Bobby’s best friend. Will the truth make them free, or will they lose their friendship forever?
Christian Fiction
Prologue
It happened many years ago, in 1968, to be exact. I’d just turned eighteen and Bobby and I were so in love. Or, so I’d thought. I was the good girl. The one who always followed the rules and obeyed Momma and Daddy. My sister, on the other hand, was a different story. While she certainly wasn’t the worst sinner on the block, she did manage to find her share of trouble – many times dragging me into it. But, of course, Daddy always knew I was the innocent one...
Author Michelynn Christy resides in the Midwest and enjoys creating romantic stories that point to Jesus. Her faith in God shines through the pages of her writing. Michelynn's debut novelette A Christmas to Remember launched in late 2015.
This read happens back in the sixties and a different time and place, but the heartbreak is the same. The author shows us some of the anguish these young people go through with their decisions, young and sewing wild oats, maybe, but there is more, and some of these split-second choices cause a life long suffering. Getting to the point of forgiveness is a difficult road, secrets abound, and there are a lot of hurts, but all things are possible with God, and all need to find their way to the right path. A page turning read about the difficult choices made and the consequences that follow, and the long road to forgiveness. I received this book through Celebrate Lit, and was not required to give a positive review.
If He Only Knew is an Historical Romance set in the 1960s that tackles a lot of the issues we face today. Issues you wouldn't think that happened a lot in this time. The 1960s is portrayed as a time when things were quiet, everyone knew each other, and there wasn't a lot of drama that happened. No time is perfect, the movies and TV shows have done a great job letting us believe the time was perfect.
In If He Only Knew, its 1968 in Cambridge, California and love is in the air. Donna Peterson is the preacher's daughter who not only has her life ahead of her but her future looks very promising. There are secrets, deceit, and loss going on in this sweet, small coastal town. There is not a lot I can say or I will give away what the book is exactly about.
This book was a good read, written by two authors who have put their all into this book. The story is something that needs to be shared even if it is fiction. These things are happening all around us.
“I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone."
This was a wonderful romantic story with a bit of a twist. Is the good daughter really the good daughter. Donna loves Bobby. These characters are very likable. There are problems that arise and must be dealt with. Donna has to make some very hard decisions and she must grow up quickly. I received a copy of this book from Celebratelit for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
I found this book a very emotional read and teared up often, reaching for the tissues. Ths storyline covered the subjects of cheating, pregnancy, and abortion. It was about the struggles of Donna, the daughter of a minister who was sinking in guilt for a sin committed and kept secret and two best friends pared against each other, in love with the same woman.
The main characters were well-developed and I found myself connecting to each one in a compassionate way. Each character had been wounded deeply and had to learn to ask forgiveness for the hurt they caused.
The authors did an amazing job of presenting the effects of keeping secrets without confession and forgiveness. I enjoyed all the scriptural insights woven into the storyline showing that even the most broken person can be forgiven and find peace and happiness again. It reminded me of how much God's grace covers sin in all our lives and just how much HE loves us.
First of all, can we talk about that gorgeous cover?!? That’s totally what drew me to this book in the first place. It’s just stunning.
This peek into the late 60s is peppered with nostalgia and interesting tidbits of life in that era – an era not seen too often in Christian Fiction. Donna and Bobby and Rick are a complicated love triangle, made even more so by the Vietnam War and events back home. The preacher’s daughter aspect to Donna’s character adds extra dimension as well.
If He Only Knew ended up being a very different book than I expected. In fact, I’ve been praying about how to write this review. There are some elements of the plot that I have real heart-issues with, but I can’t truly flesh them out here without giving away spoilers. I will say this: there is sin going on within the plot – by many different people – yet the woman takes most of the blame and self-condemnation (as well as severe condemnation from others). I wanted to purse whomp both men, to be honest. Forgiveness is demonstrated and I see what the authors were trying to do, but for me it fell short of the goal. I also realize that part of the other characters’ reactions were par for the course during that time period, but the beauty of writing fiction in different eras is that we get to change the story a bit. We get to pour soothing grace over raw wounds, not ignoring or minimizing the sin but letting abundant mercy come alongside the judgmental finger pointing.
Another part of the problem, I think, is that the writing itself just didn’t do it for me. On the surface, the characters appear to be acting as expected, yet it seems to stay on the surface. There wasn’t the emotional connection that I needed with any of the characters and in large part that’s due to the way the first part of the story tries to keep what happened a secret until a big reveal later on. But then there are other little things that are symptomatic of the larger issues. For instance, a character who is shipping out to Vietnam forgot he was going and therefore had to leave without preparing the woman he loves (whom he hasn’t told he’s leaving). In a later chapter, there is very little reaction to someone basically returning from the dead. All in all, the writing just needed to be tighter and maybe some of the earlier frustrations I mentioned wouldn’t have occurred.
Bottom Line: Reviews like this are difficult to write, because I would rather gush over how much I loved a book than talk about why I didn’t like it. With some tweaking here and there, this has the potential to be a powerful story that can promote healing. I do feel I must also mention that this book deals with some ‘trigger issues’ that may rub salt in raw wounds for some women. I also realize that my opinions are in the minority as it’s received mostly 4 and 5 star reviews so far.
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
A beautiful love story and a can't put down book! I enjoyed the book and the characters in it. There wasn't really nothing that I didn't like about the book. It was all very well written. Everyone does wrong. Not just the preacher's kids. Hurt does not go away it just gets buried and festers until we can't stand it no more. It can make or break a relationship depending on whether or not you can forgive that person. Oh yes, forgiveness is hard! Very hard but, it can be done. As Preacher Peterson says it would be what Jesus would want. We are forgiven. There are no secrets where God is concerned. He knows everything even when we try to hide it. I can relate to Donna and Bobbys hardships. I lost two children myself. I've always wondered what they would've been. I believe that the Lord put us in certain places at certain times. He does it bc it can help us grow and learn about Him and get others to come to Him. I strongly recommend this book. It's definitely worth reading I received this book for free. No compensation was received and all opinions are my own opinion
“If Only He Knew” by Michelynn Christy and Brandi Gabriel
What a truly apt name for this engaging and enjoyable novel. Stories of love lost and love gained. One woman’s choice that may, and eventually does, change the trajectory of so many lives. A secret she has carried for so long, that when it comes out it is a relief and a burden.
If he only knew how his affair prior to marriage changed not just his life but that of his ex and best friend. If only he knew, he would have made so many changes in his life.
If he only knew how his best friend felt...and how his girlfriend really felt.
But none of them knew until one fateful night, the secret she has been carrying all comes out. Decisions are made hastily that night. Decisions that lead to the truth between all of them. A truth that eventually leads to a better understanding by all. A truth that may change everyone’s previous lives and commitments. A truth that may change the present. A truth that will need to lead to forgiveness and grace if any of them are to move forward.
“If He Only Knew,” addresses some very hard choices. Some readers may not like or approve of. Some may feel as if it led to the ending it was supposed to. It is a novel with such wonderful characters. They are flawed, strong, and human. It is a novel with such realism that the reader is able to be present on each characters lives. There are parts I found disturbing, but probably not the parts that will upset others.
For me labels of ones actions, though they may be unapproved actions by many, only makes that decision ever more wrought and unforgiving. We all make decisions our religion, our family, our spouse, and many others may not approve of, and may have a specific and negative view of. Labels often make that choice even more terrible, even more destructive and even be an incorrect label of that action.
I truly found this novel interesting and captivating in regard to the topics it addresses. The authors took some tough topics, a realistic basis and time period, along with some amazing characters to create a realistic and amazing novel.

If He Only Knew by Michelynn Christy, Brandi Gabriel
I really appreciate when an author is willing to write about difficult topics and present them in a Biblical perspective. The characters in this book had hard lessons to learn about forgiveness and forgiving, and the authors were very clear about the forgiveness that comes only from Jesus. This makes it very hard for me to write this review, because I know it was a labor of love. And my opinion is apparently in the minority because I have read other reviews and they are mostly glowing. Overall, the rating on Goodreads (out of 17 reviews, not including mine) is 4.22 stars.
This was a very difficult book for me. I’ll be candid with you, if I hadn’t committed to reading and reviewing it, I would have stopped reading it close to the beginning. The dialog and the story seemed superficial and lacking depth up until the big reveal and then things got emotional. The portion that dealt with forgiveness felt very preachy and contrived.
One of the characters, Rick, went to war and managed to forget he was reporting for boot camp the next day. That just didn’t seem realistic based on my experience (and my friend was going during peacetime). And then there was Rick’s return after he went MIA that was made very little of.
The hardest part to read was the subject matter. Without going into details, I’ll just say that it was a topic that is very sensitive and it was painful to read about, especially with the details that were given. I won’t give away any spoilers, especially because the authors are very clear about not revealing what the issues are, so if you want to know so you can make a decision about reading this book, feel free to send a note on my contact page and I can give you more details privately.

I am grateful to Celebrate Lit for giving me a copy of this book. The fact I received this book for free does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I just received this for free to review. I finished this story the very same night. I couldn't put it down. I was completely surprised how the book turned out.
It was so sad that Donna couldn't talk to her Dad about what happened. If she did she would have been saved years of guilt, shame and sorrow. Donna tried so hard to be the "good" girl as though that was the way to heaven. Jesus died on the Cross for our sins. GOD is a forgiving GOD. She didn't have to deal with her pain all alone.
This book dealt with loss, relationships, faith, trust, guilt, fear and forgiveness. I loved the story and how it all came together in the end.
Five Stars!

"If He Only Knew " is a novel set in the late 1960s. The book deals with family relationships, loyalty, friendship, love, and loss. The main topic is somewhat controversial in nature, but we won’t mention what it is lest we spoil the story for readers. (This is from the guest from my blog post so I encourage you to read the guest post,)
"If He Only Knew" by Michelynn Christy, Brandi Gabrie is a great story and a reminder that God forgives us even when we can't forgive ourselves. I really liked this story and if you read this story you will need tissues because the book is about real life issues.
This book touched me in a real personal way, no I don't have the same issue as Donna, but I struggle with feelings of being good enough and I too am afraid that if people knew the real me, they wouldn't like me but I know that like me but realistically...that isn't true because I am an open book. But this story helps readers understand that God loves us regardless of what we do or don't do if we just let Him and believe Him.
This book is about betrayal and lost and trust and forgiveness.
I encourage everyone to read this book, yes it is a Christian book and one of the characters is a preacher but the book is not preachy at all, I believe all readers could gain some insight from this novel.
I was given a complimentary copy by the authors and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.
The story is set in 1968 but it is one that is relevant even today. I related to Donna because like her, I was a preacher’s kid. I felt like everyone was watching me just waiting for me to mess up. For some reason preacher’s kids are held more accountable by others. What people don’t realize is that anyone can sin no matter who they are or what their upbringing is. I walked on egg shells around my dad praying that I wouldn’t disappoint him. My childhood was quite different than Donna’s but in a way very similar. As children we all want to please our parents. We hunger for their love and protection. The author captured a moment of weakness and has written a story that explodes with emotion. I cried through the entire book and even now I shed tears because the story is so eloquently written.
The best way to review this book is for me to tell you how much God loves us. It doesn’t matter what we do, He is there waiting with open arms. I know the feeling of not being loved. I know what it feels like to make a decision that changes your life. Donna, in a vulnerable moment makes a choice that will have a chain reaction of guilt, loss, hurt and secrets for many years to come. It is hard to live with a secret and in this story , the author explores with great transparency how one secret can destroy many lives. I loved the three main characters and thought the author did an amazing job of allowing readers to identify with each one.
In the story Donna experiences the fear of rejection and the hurtful words said by people who judge without thinking. I am reminded of what I heard one time. “ You don’t know what someone is really feeling until you walk in their shoes.” I hope this book will touch many and be reminded that you are forgiven.
I received a copy of this book by Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
My Perspective This was an interesting book. The characters were realistic to me, as was the setting and the circumstances. What I enjoyed about the book was that it showed how human we can be. Not one of us is perfect. Not one. And as much as we do not deserve it, Jesus loves us anyway. That was shown throughout this book, weaved into several parts of the story line. It was a beautiful theme and one that needs to be read. It was a difficult storyline in that the problem the main character had is very controversial, but it is real. This really happens, both today and in the past. And I think that sometimes we feel that Christians wouldn't make this type of "mistake", however I think that is false. And by saying this I am in no way supporting this issue, I am simply stating that there is a chance that it's happened, and bravo to the authors for writing about it. I love seeing real life in Christian fiction, because it feels more real to me. There were times where I found myself speed reading through. The characters acted a little bit too predictable for my liking, however the overall theme made up for that. I encourage you to read this and learn from it. Understand that none of us are perfect. We all make mistakes, and we all seek redemption and forgiveness. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This story features the themes of love, loss, forgiveness, faith revived/truly lived, and family unity. The title is apt, the story believable if not expertly written. These young authors have tackled challenging subject matter and presented it in an accessible and easy to digest manner.
Kudos to Michelynn Christy and Brandi Gabriel for their willingness to shed light on human frailties that were not uncommon for the era in which this story is written but in our current times as well. Suffice it to say, no one, regardless of their faith, is immune to temptation and faulty reasoning.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book. A favorable review was not required, no compensation was received, and all views expressed are my own.
This is definitely a amazing book about forgiveness. It is one that leaves you feeling good at the end but also I never guessed on how it would end. It is set during the 1960’s when the Vietnam war was. It is not about the war directly but the war did have indirect affect on the characters. I loved how all the characters were written. There is Donna and Bobby, Rick their friend, Pamela who is Donna sister and Danny. Donna and Pamela Father is a preacher and a widow. A lot of conflict with some of the characters and also within their own self. This book was very interesting, not a dull moment in the book. An historical book but not way back in history but one we could all learn from. It was a blessing to read this book. I received an complementary copy of the book from Celebrate Lit Publishers.
This is the first book by Michelynn Christy and Brandi Gabriel that I have read. It’s an interesting book focusing on grace and forgiveness of God and the grace and forgiveness that the people of Christ can extend. The book deals with some tough issues in the 1960s that are still relevant today. The storyline is intriguing with some well-placed surprises and twists. Though the main characters Donna, Bobby, and Rick are well-meaning, imperfect, real characters, I unfortunately didn’t connect with them. The dialogue felt a bit flat and their thought processes seemed a bit scattered and one-dimensional. I really dislike love triangles so perhaps I was biased while trying to immerse myself in the threesome’s story. The reminder that God forgives our sins, even the ones we feel are unforgivable because the consequences of the sins have hurt others, is powerful and the struggle the main characters endure to forgive themselves and each other is tangible.
I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher via Celebrate Lit Tour. I was not required to write a favorable review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
In a time where things happened that wasn't what one would consider normal, secrets that were hoped to stay secret are revealed. Completely opposite of how issues are dealt with now. A story that reminds me how easy it is to become blind, complacent and accepting of situations that are opposite of God's teachings. But we serve a forgiving God who reaches down in our desperate times to love us.
Blessings, Karen

My Review Get your tissues ready for when you read this one. I enjoyed this book. This story involves a preacher's daughter . It is also how sin and mistakes made years ago can still affect you years later and also with forgiveness and the bitterness that can come with unforgiveness buried in your heart. All the characters and their experiences seemed so real. The authors did a good job of writing this one and handling heavy hard issues. Good read. Disclaimer: I was given a complimentary copy of this book but all thoughts and opinions are my own .
A good girl, a pastor's daughter no less, makes a mistake. Thinking she's doing the right thing she stays quiet, and keeps a secret that is killing her on the inside.
The characters were real and relatable. The story was believable and had a thread of suspense that I wasn't expecting, which was fun. My only complaint was that the faith thread woven through the story seemed very preachy to me. I did enjoy the story. It was fun being able to go back in time. Overall it was an enjoyable book.
Before I struggle through this review I want to put a disclaimer out there. This book, while very much strongly Christian fiction, does deal with some heavy topics. Premarital sex, abortion, still-birth, miscarriage, and the Vietnam war. None of this is heavily detailed but these are the major themes of this book. If any of this is potentially triggering or upsetting for you this may not be the best option for you to pick up and read. That being said, lets struggle through this review together.
The truth is that I struggled to get into the book. The setup and conversational dialogue was simplistic and abrupt. It felt superficial and did nothing to help develop the characters or draw me into their stories. This theme carried throughout the book for me and I never really felt like the characters were truly dimensional and the story struggled to flow. Don’t get me wrong, when the story started drawing depth and emotions came into play they were there. They just felt flat. And when the emotions came into play and the full spectrum of God’s forgiveness and healing was laid on the table…it felt too easy.
The struggles these characters were dealing with are heavy and hard. Deep hurts are not overcome easily. Forgiveness, while desired and expected as God commands, does not come easily. From personal experience there’s almost that sense of take-backs. Forgiveness is not the same as forgetting. And forgetting never really happens. Deep hurts take deep healing time. Forgiveness is a journey because sometimes forgiveness is multilayered. I also felt, as the story took shape, that it was very preachy. I feel like I say lack of depth a lot but it plays in here as well too. Everyone was quoting scripture and referencing God, which is admirable but it diminishes the human component. Forgiveness is only the first step to overcoming and I felt like this book missed out on the opportunity to show deeper healing and compassion by forgetting that focus and making everything sorta rosy.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by CelebrateLit. I was not compensated for this review and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.
What an awesome read! This story is based on a situation in the life of a young preacher's daughter and the ending results pulls you in and keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way through. Oh the pain and guilt and struggles of the young woman because of her secret sin and how it affects her throughout the years and everyone else connected. Then the hurt of her husband when he finds out the secret. The young man who fathered the aborted baby is also full of pain. It also affects the would have been grandparents. What an example of God's grace, forgiveness, and healing. This author so well painted a beautiful picture of our loving, forgiving, and graceful God. This is a new author for me, and I will be looking for more books. It is my choice to give my honest review.
Donna's story is truly amazing. When Bobby starts cheating on her Rick is there for her. What Donna goes through after Rick leaves is so sad. Watching Bobby and Donna get back together again is special. The tragedies they suffer because of a previous mistake is really sad. The characters in this story are very special people. You will feel God working throughout this whole story. I reviewed this book for a honest review for the author. The review is my honest thoughts and reaction to this book.
Emotional and moving, this book was a reminder that even those that are deemed to be perfect in public eyes, may make human choices that don’t agree with society or family. I found that the setting in 1968 to be unique and not always sought, it certainly peeked my interest.
