I am not usually one for ghost stories but The Ghost Of Molly Holt wasa well written tight read that had that slow burn tale that built up chapter by chapter I really enjoyed it but some parts were hard to tread so its not for the faint of heart, it was chilling disturbing & I had to put it down at times.
Three friends were in the forest when they stumbled on the abandoned house where Molly Holt was tragically killed Becky, Tim & Freddie decide to go in & look for her ghost BUT WATCH THE VIDEO IF YOU DARE!!
Tim didn't believe in ghosts but Becky did they find the basement & hear awful screams they think its a joke until Freedie decides to go to the basement alone, he never returns.
Its taking its toll on Tim & Becky & they hear things they have never heard before, its when Becky gets hurt that the plot really picks up Molly Holt WANTS REVENGE & REVENGE SHE GETS!!
Becky gets so terrified that she is POSSESSED by Molly Holts ghost. WILL THEY SURVIVE R WILL MOLLY GET HER REVENGE??
I found this book very entertaining & for what Molly Holt went through I was gasping my every breath was like OH NO my heart went out to her.
WARNING THERE WAS A LOT OF BLOOD THIRSTY DIALOGUE IN THIS READ AT YOUR OWN PERIL!!
Just a note why I didn't give this a 5 the ending was a let down for me.
"Molly Holt has returned" is the main theme in this book. Two men kidnapped, raped, and tortured Molly Holt while video taping everything they did to her. The video tape was found and went viral on the internet, but no one knew there was a curse attached to the video tape, until three teenagers decide to go to the house where the murder happened.
Freddie wants to check out a house that has been abandoned for a long time as he thinks that might be the house where Molly Holt was murdered. He talks his friends, Tim and Becky to go along with him. The three friends end up watching the video while they are in the basement where the murder took place which ends up activating the spirit of Molly Holt. The friends experience a journey into hell as the "spirit" exacts revenge on the three friends for watching the video.
Author, Amy Cross, has once again grabbed me and thrown me right into the book as I felt connected to the characters and started feeling what they were going through as they had to endure Molly Holt's vengeance.
I read this book in a day and stayed up till the early morning hours finishing it. Five stars for this book.
Oh, come on... with a cover like that, who could resist =)
And it was actually pretty cool (and free on Kindle). The story follows three teens, who explore an abandoned house deep in the forest, where a young girl had been brutally tortured and killed. Her death had been filmed by the killers, and uploaded to the internet, where it had become a frequent download by curious teens. And without getting into spoilers, I’ll just say the dead girl is really really pissed at people watching this snuff film of her death.
It’s a really quick read, and does keep you turning pages; but it also has you thumping your head at some of the kids’ stupidity. And the author’s choice to keep one of the kids a skeptic really wears thin after a while. The dialogue is also hit and miss. But overall, it was a fun read, and I’m looking forward to reading some more books by this author.
This scared the crap out of me. In a way, to be fair, there is very little that was unique or genre shattering about the story. It was mostly a collection of scenes any avid reader or watcher of scary tales has seen before. And yet... and yet... there was something in the writing that made Molly Holt scare the crap out of me. This books kept me looking at all the dark spots of my house while I was reading it. So, in that regard, it was very thoroughly satisfying.
Two critiques I would offer, however. Firstly, I found the protagonist to be slightly annoying. The young man who tells the story is so completely obsessed with the unreality of ghosts and the supernatural that he comes off as ultimately foolish, even stupid. I am of a rational mindset myself, but there has to be a point at which the preponderance of evidence is such that you have to alter your worldview accordingly. I think the author ultimately felt the same way about her character. On the last page she brings this character trait to a reductio ad absurdum which is somewhat comical in nature. But for me, I did not redeem the character to know she felt he was as flawed and annoying as I did.
The second critique is a common tripping point for many horror stories. When we finally “get to know“ the antagonist, the eponymous ghost of Molly Holt, much of the book’s “fear factor” was lost. The main problem here is that the ghost comes off as contradictory. She just doesn’t make any sense. I don’t want to get into the details too much, because I try to always write spoiler free reviews. However, Molly Holt just doesn’t make any sense. It’s not obviously when you’re “in the story”, but it came to bother me more and more when I stepped back and thought about her.
These flaws were strongly offset by Ms Cross’ excellent writing. I steamrolled through the book in three sittings over two days. I couldn’t put it down and, as stated above, I was scared silly most of the time. I plan to give Ms across another go or two.
My first read of Amy Cross. I've heard the name mentioned many times, and even appeared in a few books with this author. Finally I decided to give her work a go. Have to say that I'm very pleased that I did! This certainly will not be the last thing I read from Cross. Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Really creepy, really tense and all round just a really fun read.
Ask yourself, do you believe in ghost? I read somewhere that those who suffer a violent death cannot rest. You see they have unfished business—payback, revenge, or something holding them here to relive the torturous events that caused their mortal demise. Whether or not this is true? I cannot be certain. However, if you could ask Becky, Freddie Barnes, Joseph Mynot, or Anthony Jewell they would say, ‘Yes ghost are real especially the ghost of Molly Holt.’ On the other hand, if you ask Tim Holland he would, most likely, tell you there is no such thing. However, you would be pressed to believe him—his eyes would give that way. Let author Amy Cross, take you on a haunting adventure in The Ghost of Molly Holt. Cross is an incredibly imaginative writer of horror fiction. She proves once again that her talents are a force to be reckoned with.
The Ghost of Molly Holt by Amy Cross is a 2017 publication by this very prolific writer of horror fiction. I read a lot of her novels and have never been bored by her writing until this novel. It was probably bound to happen. But I can not resist comparing this novel to her other novels I have read. This one just doesn't match up as far as quality of plot and characters. So, what happened?
It is not the lack of surprises; there are some interesting ones. But I had to read through twenty chapters before anything typically Cross happened. The first twenty chapters could have been any ghost story told around a campfire at a scouting camp out. Completely unremarkable. Then, in chapter twenty-one the story became interesting. No, you can't just skip to chapter twenty-one and read a good story. The first chapters are necessary for the last nine chapters to make sense, at least as much sense as a horror story can make. In those first twenty chapters there are hints of subplots that could have been developed to keep a reader entertained along the way to the main event. They were never developed.
Molly Holt died a gruesome death many years in the past during the making of a snuff film. She was tortured and killed for the amusement of others. Although the film was widely circulated in video stores and later on the internet, the place where she was killed was never determined. Her body was not found but the police were sure that the film was real. It became a high school cool ritual to watch the film. One high school student, Freddy, became obsessed with the film and read all the background material to the story he could find. He even thought he had found the house where Molly was killed.
Freddy wants to convince everyone that he was a hero of his story; he had found the abandoned crime scene. He invites his friend Tim to go to the house one night and look at the proof that Freddy claimed he had found. On the way to the house they met Becky, a girl Tim is smitten with. "Smitten" is a fine word to describe Tim's feelings for Becky because "smitten" can handle a budding relationship that has no sex. There is no sex in this novel.
For twenty chapters we read of the three arguing about the existence of ghosts. Freddy is convinced that Molly still inhabits the house. Tim is dismissive of the idea but is willing to change his views to accommodate Becky. Becky is a non-believer but willing to change based on evidence convincing to her. Other situations are hinted at. There might be a relationship between Becky and Tim; Tim is not sure of it. Becky might have a bad reputation in school, she may have been abused at home, and she is definitely more mature than Freddy or Tim. But all those things are lightly hinted at and never developed. The reader is left with a twenty-chapter argument of "Yes, ghosts exist" and "No, they don't" said with increasing voice volume as the speakers get frustrated with each other. Until chapter twenty-one.
With chapter twenty-one, readers begin to see twists and surprises. I like the Cross style of writing so I was only mildly disappointed at the long wait to get to the good stuff. I only gave it three stars on Amazon. While it was overall good, if it were the first Amy Cross novel I read, I would not read another one.
Amy Cross used to be my favorite author with original stories such as The Library series, The Island series, American Coven, and so forth . Even though her older work wasn't edited, she added more substance to the stories. I would buy them at 2.99. Now it's just one generic ghost story after another that lacks the clever plot she was able to think of, with complete originality. I hope her writing improves because she is really talented.
This was okay. I usually love books by Cross...I'm certain this one is my least favorite so far.
I didn't care for the main character. His "disbelief" didn't ring true. I thought he believed after he survived? Didn't he say "Molly Holt was here all along!"?? Why is he there in the first place? To impress Becky...but they also say they invited her en route? I dunno. I guess the characters just weren't fleshed out very well and felt hollow.
The story too, for that matter. How did Freddie figure out this was a crime scene? What led him there after professionals didn't find it? Just the video? Didn't a LOT of people watch the video? Why that house? The criminals brought Molly there...why there? It sounds like it was pretty far from when she was from. How did the video ever get out? If Molly took out her murderers, leaving tapes and all their equipment....how did the video ever make it to the internet? The book makes it clear that you can't get service from there.
And why was Becky so violent that the main character could believe her responsible? What was her back story? I kept expecting her and Freddie to be in on the original crime (as children?), or in on some recreation together. Nope. Just random teens who went ghost hunting together in this random house...
Why didn't Molly continue to murder during the fifty years after the MC promised to burn the house and didn't? Did he go to jail for arson?
So many questions. It's not like I expect realism in my horror...but this book just didn't feel complete.

The Ghost of Molly Holt is an incredible book written by Amy Cross. The author had a great way of setting up the story in the beginning, telling us the story of Molly Holt and on what happened to her. She slowly drags us down into the story, deeper and deeper until there is no return. Yes there have been books and movies about this kind of story before, but this one was well executed and thought through and would make for a great movie.
Tim is an amazing main character who carries the story beautifully and really makes the story work. You follow him and feel how slowly but surely he realizes he is in it way too deep and this may be it! You can't help but wonder how one could be so silly, having watched horror movies, knowing how these things happen, to go there at night and not hauling ass out of there at the first sign of anything being remotely of?
The one thing I have to ding this book on his editorial errors. In today's age there just shouldn't be those errors anymore, with computers fixing most of them and then there are those amazing ARC readers that can really help with the rest
All in all this was a fantastic read and I for one really enjoyed it a lot. I didn't put it down from the beginning until the end, although I was pretty skived out but loved it anyways, it's one of those things that any horror movie/book lover knows oh so well!
this was a free kindle download and whilst it was a decent read it wasn't fantastic. The Good- for a horror story it's actually pretty effective and my heart was hammering during the read at points! It is pretty detailed and gory in parts the background of Molly Holt particularly so, so people of a sensitive nature beware as one chapter made for difficult reading, even for a horror fanatic like myself. It is an easy read and keeps you engaged that you won't want to put it down to find out what happens.
The not so good- the writing at times annoyed me, very he said she said then he said then she said. The dialogue and behaviour of the main character is particularly clunky, unbelievable and I was getting annoyed at his utterly stupid and idiotic behaviour thoughts and actions played as if it was believable cause he's just a kid. in a way it is actually insulting to teens. I mean at one point I was thinking Molly needs to tell him to shut the hell up! but I suppose that's a good sign that I got into the characters and story! 3 stars
This book may start out as every ghost hunting expedition gone wrong, but there is a greater depth than just the surface horror. Ms. Cross quite masterfully tells a take which begs the questions, what do we really believe, and why. With characters who react in realistic ways to a situation that may or may not be rational, Ms. Cross also challenges the reader to consider personal actions, beliefs, and motivations. This wonderful novel reasserts the purpose of the horror medium, inviting us all to look into the dark mirror, face the shadow self and to consider how we all justify ourselves. I highly recommend this book to fans of the genre, but also to people interested in the psychology behind fear. This is a fantastic read.
Hmm. Not a terrible novel, but not the best I've read either. The story was interesting, if not a tad gruesome. The writing flowed smoothly and was exciting and interesting to read. However the characters left much to be desired which caused me to skim read 50% of the book, they came across as immature, and stupid, with very few likeable characteristics. I do believe though if some more time had been spent on good character development, and fleshing out the story a bit more it would have been an incredibly good read.
“That this is where something awful happened. It's like the walls are still shaking in the aftermath of her screams.” . My thoughts: done in a sitting! This is my third Amy Cross book and it was great! I got a real Girl Next Door vibe from it (the movie not the book, well possibly the book but I haven't read it yet 🙈). Cross really has a talent for writing brutal torture/murder scenes that make me wince or look away from the book for a second! So far the quality of her books has remained the same which is great, as I have at least another dozen on my Kindle.
I don't think that Amy can write a bad story. I have read many of her works and I have to use a rating of phenomenal, excellent, great and good. This one is right at middle to end of excellent. A lot of back and forth if it's truly haunted and then cursed by a poor girl's spirit that was brutally tortured and horrifically filmed during her awful murder. It's sad in some ways, brutal and scary in others. Another crazy ride with Amy Cross!
I was going to award this book two stars but, overall, the story had merit. However, the detailed description of the events contained in the snuff movie was way over the top and quite sick. This story began as if it were a ghost story written for adolescent teens but then morphed into an unpleasant and gruesome horror. This book contained the full spectrum of ghost/horror content, the good, the bad and the ugly.
Amy Cross knows how to write edge of your seat horror. This book take you to the edge and back with 3 teenagers deciding to investigate an empty house that could've been the site of a grisly murder of a girl that was then downloaded for all to view! If you've not got a strong stomach stay away from Amy Crosd
This story has both horrific plots and frightening twists. I had to read the whole thing in one shot. There was no putting it down. Makes you wonder why such monsters exist. And that makes it even scarier. Not for the faint of heart. But a must read for horror and Gore fans.
Ver well written, which I was expecting. The atmosphere is creepy from the start and the haunted house theme is always a winner for me. Alas, I hated one of the characters (Becky, she's such a nasty b***, how could the lovely main character find her irresistible?) and the ending left me grossly unsatisfied. This was a meh for me, although I am not discarding reading something else of this author.
Once again Amy comes out charging with another scary book. She is easy to read, you get into the characters. You could is swear she learned the craft at Stephan Kings knee. She is now my number one favorite and I'm working my self across all of her books. Thanks Amy,you made a believer out of me.
Love Amy's books. Can't keep up with her she writes so many. This was very good about a young girl Molly Holt who was supposedly murdered in the basement of an old house. The townspeople don't go there saying it's haunted, but two young lads and a girl decide to go see for themselves if there is really a ghost with disastrous consequences. Loved it👍👍
The saving grace of this was that it was a short, quick read. The title is a misnomer, because while there is mention of a ghost, it feels more hack-and-slash than creepy/spooky. I was looking forward to a good ghost story that would make me uncomfortable reading after sundown, and this fell fantastically short of that.
Stopping suddenly, I realize I can see a silhouetted figure standing in the window of the front room. I stare, convinced that I have to be mistaken, but with each passing second I feel a sense of dread creeping up across my chest and onto my shoulders. Someone's watching me from the house.
I gave 3 stars because the book was slow and certain parts dragged on for to long , it didn't get exciting till 3/4ths of the way. But when it did finally get to the climax it OK nothing to thrilling
I like ghost stories. I can't seem to get enough of them (especially this time of year). Rarely do books scare me as bad as this one did. I was afraid to read it while alone and then kept thinking about it when awake. In my mind, this is what constitutes a good book.
