Storm Shift
The Charming Shifter Mysteries, Book 1
By: Calinda B
Narrated by: Valerie Paul
Series: Charming Shifter Mysteries Series, Book 1
Length: 3 hrs and 52 mins
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary.
This is a great book for readers that enjoy shifters, vampires, touch of romance, and some adventure. I enjoyed the characters, the plot was interesting and I think this will be a fun series to follow. It's fairly short but has enough to satisfy.
The narrator was great and performed the voices great! She was able to perform a crabby gruff man to a meek woman. Wonderful!

Chia Petit is grieving for her grandparents death and taking on a new job at the same time. Chia is learning that it's her job to protect the shifter community from the public at large. Yet is she able to protect herself from the dangers surrounding her? Someone doesn't think so but who is it? Was Chia's grandparents death an accident or something more sinister? Your answers await you in Storm Shift.

This is my second experience with this author. I must admit that I enjoy her writing style and characters. The story and characters are rich, bold, compelling, complex, unique, intriguing, real, raw, and down to earth too. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Fast paced paranormal read! This story is set in a small Alskian town where both shifters and non-shifters reside. Because non-shifters tend to not be tolerant of the shifters, the shifters have to be careful. The new town manager, Chia, is dealing with trying to find a murderer, grieving over her grandparents. I enjoyed this book.

I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator.

Chia is a character that confused me in the beginning. She kept stating that she does not believe in magic but yet there has been many instances where she should know magic exist. The fact that she knows that shifters are real but does not think magic exist confuses me. I wonder what she thinks about shifters and how they shift from Human to animal form? Also she sees apparitions around her but yet that isn't magic as well? Chia seems to be in denial because of her mom and that is no fault of her own it's just weird that somebody can assume that there is no magic but yet she sees it all around her.

Chia is the town manager which I assume is like a mayor because the chief of police did ask her if she's just going to focus on policy stuff and I'm assuming that is what a mayor does? 🙄🤔🤷🏾‍♀️

Anyways, Chia is newly elected and she learns that her grandparents has passed. She does not think that it is a natural death that occurred with them and she is determined to grieve but is skeptical about certain things that are happening within the town. She realizes that there is somebody out here taking out individuals and she is trying to figure out what is happening. Now this is where it gets a bit interesting.

Chia is supposed to be the mayor but yet she turned into an investigator who kind of has a bit of magic but not really. I don't know how to explain it. I'm pretty sure in upcoming books it will be explained more in detail who and what Chia is but she has some gifts that are super helpful with trying to find out what is happening within her sleepy town.

I am excited to figure out more about Chia and her grandparents and also why are there shifters in her town specifically? What drew them to that place there has to be something that is there that makes that place secure for the shifters and all the difference supernatural beings.

On a side note I have to wonder why the issue with her grandparents burial place plays such a major side role in this book? I don't know if it's just for Chia sake but I read a lot of books and I know that when something gets repeated multiple times there has to be some significant happening. Or I might be wrong Maybe it's nothing but it seems like

The narrator is definitely not the best. The way she reads the story makes me think that she is not confident with this book. It's is very choppy. It sound as though she does not pause when she needs to but pauses when it's unnecessary. It sounds like a fifth grader being told to read out loud to the class in a book or a textbook. It just does not make the book as interesting as it is.

Chia Petit was shooting clay marbles out of the sky with her Ruger .22 resolver as she tried to come to grips with the fact that her grandparents had died a couple of days ago!! It had been her Grandma who had urged her to run for Town Manager and make a difference in their community. Her grandparents had always believed in magic and the supernatural. They were calling their deaths a boating accident, but it had been a clear day and an accident made no sense to Chia. Returning to her office, Chia answered a phone call. The director of the mortuary told her that the plot her grandparents had paid for was owned by someone else. Chia ran out of the office and headed for mortuary before he could say another word! He needed to fix the issue – or he would find his zoning permit for a new wing would not be getting the Town Manager stamp of approval.

On the drive home, a doe ran in front of Chia and her vehicle clipped it slightly as she slammed on the brakes. The doe shifted into a young woman with a gunshot wound. She could see the hunter between two trees. Panicking, the woman jumped into the cold water and Chia ran after her to help her out further downstream. Leaving Megan Giles at the vehicle as the ambulance pulled up, Chia tracked the hunter – but she couldn’t explain the strange, pleasant feeling in her blood as she tracked him. Using her calf-roping skills, she subdued and plastic-tied the poacher and called the police.

Coming to question the perp, Chia was told that Megan had died. The bullet had traveled in her body as she walked and pierced her lung. The poacher, actually a bounty hunter, was denying he shot her; said he found her that way. She told them to hold him for the 72 hours they could, and she would find proof. She drove to the place she thought he would be and loaded her gun. As she turned around, a man was holding a gun pointed right between her eyes! Was this guy working with the murderer? Was he going to try to kill her? How would she escape?

Although starting on a sad note as a murder mystery that is near to Chia’s heart, the author nevertheless inserted her classic humor throughout to make the book thoroughly enjoyable! Grab a copy and follow along on Chia’s murder investigation! The twists and turns will make you dizzy! The book is well-written, the story line fast-paced and intriguing. The characters are developed well and feel like old friends! If you love paranormal tales, this one goes to the top of the list to read! The narrator of the audiobook version does a great job with the different character voices and brings the story to life. Either format is highly recommended!

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. This is the first book I have read b this author and it definitely won't be the last!!! I loved this book and I can't wait for the next book to see what happens next in this world!!!

I loved reading the storyline, it is extremely addictive and it is the kind of book that you won't be able to put down!!! I loved how this author r wrote this book, it has an extreme warmth to it and with how vivid the descriptions are you can see yourself there in that town with all the people experiencing everything alongside them.

Chia is an amazing woman to read about. Even though she is going through so much grief and pain she is still so strong and her thoughts are always for protecting her town and all those in it. She wants to make it a better place for everyone in it. She is so compassionate and huge a huge heart as well as being extremely compassionate. I love how protective Cecil is and I know that there is so much more to his character than you see in this book and I would love to find out more about him. I would also live to find out more about the secretive shifter that is Hung! This book definitely gives you a glimpse of who he is and makes you want to know more about him, his way of life and his past.

I adored reading this book and I am now dying to read more of this author's work. I can't recommend this book highly enough to all readers!!!!!

This was a really good mix and included shifters, vampires, lust, mystery, adventure and humour. This is also the type of book series that I like, this particular part of the story was told completely but there are some 'loose ends' that you know will be explored in future books.

Chia, the heroine, was one amazing little power house and was nobody's fool. She is smart, sassy, brave and I really liked her. The book is told in the third person but from Chia's POV - and a wickedly humorous view it is. There are several other interesting and well written characters to add depth to the book.

The plot was good, and so different from the usual shifter fayre. There was plenty of adventure, some good plot twists and the pace kept me engaged and reading enthusiastically.

I will definitely be continuing with this series, as I really enjoyed this book.

I will have mild spoilers in this review. Honestly I'm a little surprised at how highly rated this novella is. To be fair it's not badly written but it suffers from world building issues and a romantic subplot that made me want to pluck out my eyes.

Chia is the newly elected town manager of Charming Alaska (what is that? like a mayor?) and she has just suffered the loss of her grandparents in a boating 'accident.' She has lived with them because they are into the supernatural (vs her scientist parents living in NYC) They had some magic (she thinks she doesn't) and they know that there are shifters in town. In fact one of them a husky is Chia's best friend.

Here's where the world building falls downs immediately. It seems like an open secret that shifters exist in this town (or the world or...does no one believe? You can't tell from this) You know the sheriff who is sort of on the inside of the shifter stuff but doesn't want to believe and then there's the funeral director who refuses to bury her grandparents together in the plot they bought because they were pro-shifter so it's like WHO knows about these shifters? Why isn't the rest of the world in on this? that made no sense.

Let's not get me started on the sheriff who literally tells Chia to tone down her sharpshooting skill and her fighting abilities because she's emasculating the men in town. OMFG. But she still sees him as a sweet grandfatherly type.

Anyhow, Chia clips a doe who is running from a hunter only it's a doe shifter. Chia tries to save the the girl. SHe stops the shooter and turns him over to the cops (points to above paragraph) and then is accosted by a bounty hunter and here comes the 'romantic subplot from hell.'

He's pointing a gun at her face literally and all she can think about is how hot he is. No lie like two pages of description of his hotness while he's trained a large calibre weapon between her eyes. *raptor shrieks of rage.*

The shooter escapes and tells her he was trying to save the doe-girl from a monster but then tangles it up with husky boy and then the bounty hunter who is named HUNG. Yep you read that right. So Hung is pointing another gun at Chia and her response is telling us how WET he makes her. Like super wet, drown a puppy in her panties wet. I'm sorry if a woman is this turned on by actual threats to her life she probably needs help.

Somehow a vampire gets into the mix and the worldbuilding for them is a bit better. They're terrifying as they should be. They are addictive from the moment they bite you (i.e. doe-girl's monster) but Chia is special doesn't work on them. We find the real monster (right wing religious nutters) and in spite of how really awful the vampires are in this world Chia is okay with this one renting a room from her. Okay you're immune but how about the next person he bites?

But I can hear you asking is Hung really hung? We'll have to read book two to find out. Okay to be fair there are some good parts of this but there was so much weirdness in this that I couldn't even remember them. I don't think this is the series for me.

And don't start me on that cover with that outfit. In Alaska. (i know I know indie publishers have a shockingly poor range of stock pictures for cover making. I've been there but seriously)

Reviewed at Paranormal-y Romantic

I often pick up a series-starter book, one of those no-cost titles to get a feel for a new to me author and discover if their work strikes a chord with me or not. Storm Shift is one of those titles, and although it first was published in 2017, it’s still the first read for me so it’s all new and unexplored for this reader… and a perfect example of why I’m careful in reviews, trying not to give away spoilers to new readers.

Storm Shift caught my attention early on and held it throughout the story. Chia is a fascinating character full of mystery, sass, attitude, magic, and strength… although she’s not aware of all she can do yet in the magical realm, she will fight for and defend her town from outside forces. Her grandparents’ deaths at the lake make no sense at all, and Chia is determined to get to the bottom of that mystery. Added to this newly elected Town Manager’s plate are a murder, a bounty hunter, and even more questions that have no answers – yet.

The world-building made Charming, Alaska come alive for me, the secondary characters added just enough to keep events interesting, and the overall feel of the story kept me reading until the end. I liked Chia and Hung, have so many questions that I believe would be answered further into the series. Will I come back? Yes, I will return for the rest of the series, now comes the decision to binge-read or go with a monthly purchase… we shall see.

I own a Kindle edition of Storm Shift.

Read a book by the author, went to her website to look for the sequel, couldn't find a word about the book I read, not to mention the sequel. So I thought I would give some other books a chance and got this one free for signing up for her newsletter.

Honestly, it put me off from trying any of her other books. This one felt rushed, the characters single-sided and undeveloped (and making weird choices given the situation). It is quite action packed, but besides stuff happening, the action feels empty. Someone fights with someone else, they all have their reasons, all extremely blurry. But there is nothing there to pique my interest about ulterior motives or hidden players or even what else this universe has to offer. I'm a sucker for paranormal/fantasy series because I want to know more about the universe and the character development. This was one of the few books that sparked little interest and made me wonder why I invested two hours of my life into finishing it.

Two stars given solely for the fact that the writer did put in some effort and because the book was free. But far from my expectations.

Decent start of the series.

World building was good. We move around a great deal in the book, but all settings and scenes were detailed and clear, letting the reader fully focus on the actual story.

Character development was decent, unfortunately we didn't really get to know any character well (yet). Though seeds have been planted so I hope to have more insight into the reasoning, history and feelings of our cast.
I did find it pretty annoying that they kept calling Cecil a mutt, that he was blindly following orders and didn't really seem to have a mind of his own.

Pacing and flow was good, there was a good balance between the action and all the conversations. It never felt too slow or dull nor was there non stop action.

The book itself was well written with only a few errors here and there (minor things, nothing that pulled me away from the story).

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and all in all its a decent start to the series, I do hope to get more insight and depth in the cast in the next installment.

Storm Shift is a fun story, and the book 0 prequel of what I'm expecting will be a fantastic series. Chia Petit, the heroine of this tale, is just the kind of kick-a** female I totally adore. Newly elected as town manager of Charming, Alaska (which town has a large number of shifters in it, among with a vampire), this story finds her teaming up with a shifter bounty hunter named Hung as they try to find out who or what us killing shifters (possibly even China's own grandparents). Action, adventure, thrills, twists and turn all ensue, and even the potential for romance as the chemistry between Chi and Hung is ridiculously hot. Add together great writing with string characters and a fascinating new author-created world for them to inhabit, and it's no surprise that the result is a clear winner of a novel, and one which I highly recommend.

This was part of a collection I bought so I wanted go give it a go and the title intrigued me.
The one issue I had was that I did not know how to feel about Chia. She felt a bit like a bully really, since she used her job role to get her own way, she disregarded over people's jobs and feelings. However, I respect she was dealing with grief. I loved that she knew how to track, use guns etc. She was not a weak character.
I enjoyed the story, it flowed well and the world building kept me interested. It did not take long to read either.
I loved that the shifters took on traits of their animals. For example, Cecil was loyal like a husky and that they spent time in animal form doing animal things like dumpster diving. That made me laugh.
I would say it's worth a read, I would be interested in the rest of this series and others that the author has to offer.

Chia is the new town manager in Charming, Alaska. Her grandparents recently died and she refuses to believe they weren't murdered. While trying to find the guy responsible for the murder of a deer shifter, she meets Hung they bounty hunter looking for the same person. They work together along with Cecil her best friend to find the guy, but other things come out. Even though there is an attraction between them, Hung has to go to another job. Will things work out between them or is this it? Can't wait for the next one to find out. I voluntarily received an advanced copy of this book for a honest review

First let me say that I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book, but it in no way influenced my feedback. I always leave an honest review.

With that said, on to the review; I loved this story. Chia seems like a normal young woman, but she's got lots (and I mean lots), of spunk. She's definitely a feisty, tiny female who you will love right away. She's got a funny, horny best friend, a sheriff that's really trying to guide her, but has no clue how, and lots of crazy psychos running around, & last but not least, a very hot bounty hunter to deal with. :)

This is a gr8 interesting mystery. I really recommend this read 5 Thumbs up. I can't wait to read book 2.

I wasn't sure what to expect when i started listening to thi sbook as it did sound quite intriguing but also very weird.

Fortunately I quite enjoy weird so I am glad I did listen to it as it was a brilliant story.

It follows a woman called Chia who is the new mayor of a town called Charming, Alaska as she investigates the death of a deer shfiter in the woods.,which she sees as driving home one day.

Whilst investigating the murder she meets a Bounty Hunter who has come to investigate the dead girl and also other creatures including shape shifters.
The book and narration are both brilliant and I can't wait to listen to book 2.

This is an interesting start to the series; it kept me laughing and it kept me turning pages. The humor, by far, is my favorite part of this book. It appeals to my quirky, very off kilter sense of the absurd. My main complaint is that we don’t really get to know any of the characters. At the end of this book, I feel like I have so many questions left unanswered. It’s a good way to keep me intrigued to want to keep reading the series. But it’s also a fine line to dance with me; too many unanswered questions and I may not want to keep reading. Right now, I want to know more, and I want to know what other hijinks the shifters of Charming are going to get up to.

Uncaged Book Reviews:

One of my favorite interactions is between Chia and D’Raynged – a proper and stuffy vampire, and with her husky shifter best friend, Cecil. As for the love interest, I’m still on the fence with Hung, and even though Chia is a smart, resourceful woman, she’s not a typical bad-ass hunter. But her high school doe eyes at Hung does grate on your nerves at times. Although this book wraps up one part of the storyline, there are still questions left over, and I’m looking forward to reading more. Reviewed by Cyrene

A Great Start to a Series!

This book was witty, intriguing! It is packed full of sexy shifters and one woman who is trying to find her way in a man’s world.
Chia is the newly elected town manager of Charming but strange things are happening and the residents are not happy with all the changes. Can one woman make a real difference while figuring out where her place in the world is?
I am looking forward to finding out if she can figure out why she is so different to others and what is going on in her small hometown.

They were into magic and more trying to protect all the shifters that lived in their town. You have two different bounty hunters one good one bad both shifters. You have Chia's best friend Cecil who is a shifter Husky, who loves her and protects her. Will Chia and the good bounty hunter fall in love or will they kill each other? Great read. Storm Shift was a fun, quick read. There was an interesting cast of characters that ice in a small town in rural Alaska. Charming, AK is charming a song as you are a normal human. There us most definitely a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy on all things "abnormal.

Chia seems abnormal though I am still trying to figure out how. I also look forward to seeing where the budding relationship between Chia & Hung goes.

A fun quick read, give it a try.

Great beginning to a new series!! Lots of mystery and with the determination by Chia to find out who killed her grandparents and a shifter it brings her closer to love and possibly death if she continues pushing her way to the truth . Hope to read the next book and that it will be a bit longer as this was a quick, short read. 4⭐'s for what looks to be the start of a great new series by Calinda B. I received a gifted copy of the book and am voluntarily choosing to leave an honest and unbiased review. If you like paranormal thrillers with some romance on the side, this books for you.

Nice Alaskan paranormal/shifter series

This is a n interesting new series. It's set in a small town in Alaska made up of both shifters and non-shifters. Most of the non-shifters are not aware of their paranormal neighbors. Those who are aware are less than tolerant. The new town manager hopes to foster positive change and create a more accepting environment. Of course, she didn't expect to begin her job while grieving for her grandparents, and searching for a murderer. Great book.
