An avid reader all her life, Petra is finally dipping her toe in the water and allowing her imagination to run riot. She loves to travel and reads everything she can get her hands on. Her idea of a good read is one where the story and characters linger, long after the book has been set aside. Sometimes, when the ending of a promising book disappoints her, she imagines a different and more satisfying outcome for herself.
She strives to write fantasy with vivid characters and elements of adventure, mystery and romance juxtaposed together, since those are the tales she has enjoyed the most over the years. To share the stories swirling in her imagination is a labor of love and a lifelong dream come true for Petra.
Saakshi and Zoran grabbed my heart! They are both so strong, yet so different. You feel the unspoken love between them, and can't help but to cheer them on. Petra Landon takes you on an exciting emotional journey with a fabulous ending. I can't wait to read book 2 of this series!
Since this is the debut, I think it was not bad at all! It could have been better, but it was interesting.
I ilked the backstory of the rebellion against the incredibly power-grabbing Ketaari, but at the same time I couldn't understand how it was possible for the Ketaari to subjugate the powerful and technologically advanced Budheya - it was never explained clearly, just a nebulous hints were given. That is what I missed most!
Probably the author saved the explanation for future books, but it detracted from my enjoyment here...
I also found the heroine, Saakshi, very much naive. She's supposedly a rebel, but I couldn't find anything rebellious in her. She's true to her Budheya pacificist behaviour. She's mostly passive and accepting her fate.
The hero, Zoran, is a mercenary. I got the instant-mate vibe as soon as I found him almost stalking Saakshi. He's her opposite: his temper is extremly volatile. And not only toward the enemies, but also toward Saakshi. I know that her's angry on her behalf, but he doesn't take time to explain to her his behaviour and this leads to many misunderstanding.
Still, as I said the book is rather good: for me it was a full 3 stars!
Saakshi is a prisoner living out the remainder of her sentence on a space station as a serving girl. Her people, the Budheya, have been oppressed by the Ketaari Imperial Forces for more than a century and she got in some trouble as part of the rebellion. An unfortunate encounter with one of her past tormentors leads her to ask for help from an unlikely ally - a Hadari’Kor mercenary by the name of Zoran. Amidst their blossoming relationship and feelings for one another, Zoran not only protects her from further pain, he becomes the driving force behind a monumental move forward for the freedom of her people.
This was an incredible story of space galaxy proportions. It read like a Star Wars episode with the author’s own personal unique spin on things. Despite its verboseness, it was easy to follow and drew me right into the drama, action, and the ongoing predicament that Saakshi faced. I was swept away by Zoran’s willingness to become involved in a fight that genuinely wasn’t his, all for the love he had for this woman. Their relationship and the alliance between rebel forces shared equal air time and made for an amazing introduction for this series. The war has barely begun and I’m sure there will be even more fantastic developments in the next book, The Warrior, featuring the side characters introduced in this one - Sila and the Ur’quay Star Captain.
Release Date: August 25, 2017 Genre: Sci-Fi Romance POV: Multiple - 3rd person Heat: 3 out of 5 Type: Standalone - Book #1 of The War Chronicles series
The Mercenary is an unforgettable science fiction romance involving a battle hardened warrior who is presented with an opportunity to protect and help a prisoner whose race is under the rule of the brutal Ketaari. He could use her desperate situation to his advantage or he could use it to make her life and the galaxy a better place.
As I read The Mercenary, the saying “One person can make a difference” kept springing to mind. The one person who makes all the difference in Saakshi’s hard and lonely life is Zoran, a mercenary who is drawn to her by her beauty, her quiet dignity and determination. You came for me every single time. When no one else did.
Saakshi and Zoran are from different races, different planets and different social standings. As Zoran fights to protect Saakshi and free her oppressed people, he has to decide if it is possible to have a relationship with Saakshi besides that of friend and protector?
The romance was slow, smouldering and sweet, and Zoran fierce yet thoughtful and romantic. You have me at your feet, tseriya. I hope you will show mercy.
This book was so good – I could easily have read this book in one sitting, but reluctantly I had to drag myself away to attend to daily life demands. It was a well paced, easy read with no big info dump. I loved the fascinating world Ms Landon has created with the different races, customs and beliefs, as well as the different technologies.
Ms Landon is a brilliant new author who I’m sure I will be hearing much more about. I have read both of her published books and I was so impressed that she is now an auto-buy author for me.
In summary, a perfect blend of romance and science fiction that kept me riveted until the last page.
The Mercenary by Petra Landon is an experience that every sci-fi fan out there would thoroughly enjoy reading. Not only is the world building richly detailed and exceptionally thought out, where you find yourself catapulted within quadrants and upon space stations, it is also delicately mesmerising and incredibly descriptive. No detail is spared. This enhances the plot of the story and serves its purpose as a backdrop to the incredible characters and how the story unfolds - it's almost so tangible that I felt as though I was experiencing the read as though I was watching a movie upon the screen. I absolutely enjoy those kinds of stories the most because of how much I feel connected and compelled to invest myself to the voices telling the story. In this case, those voices belong to Saakshi, a rebel held prisoner and serving her time as a bartender of sorts in a space station tavern, and Zoran, a warrior so fierce that his reputation is well known amongst the five quatrants.
It's a unique vision that the author has created where a chance meeting of these two souls from different planets can provoke such an intense connection and defy all the odds that are stacked up against them in order to forge their union that would ignite so much passion and possibly start a war. Harrowingly beautiful and delicately precise, Zoran and Saakshi are a formidable force to be reckoned with and I'm extremely excited about the prospects of the journey and what's install for them as they venture on to free Saakshi's people from an enemy that is hell bent on destroying them.
I'd like to thank the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
"Every revolution begins with a spark."-Katniss Everdeen, The Hunger Games In the day or so since I finished this exciting new space opera series with a strong romantic element, I am left with a myriad of impressions. I liked this book. I found the story arc very interesting and the characters compelling. But for all the detail, I left the book feeling fuzzy with....impressions. I didn't feel grabbed like I was on the ride of my life. And I wanted that. And I think author Petra Landon is capable of delivering.
First off, I was immersed in a wealth of vocabulary. Landon doesn't shy away from an immaculate word, no matter how obscure, to color her descriptions. I appreciated this. The purveyors of the Smart Girls Love Sci-Fi Romance web site (I miss them!) might have considered Petra Landon one of their darlings just for how lusciously she delivered the perfect pronouncement.
Yet for all that perfect vocabulary, I still felt a little removed from the heartbeat of the story. I'm not sure why. Perhaps because much of the narrative is delivered in pages-long info dumps that read like a documentary. Action tells a story better. For instance, I learned a lot about Saakshi's Budheya belief system and how her corner of the universe was a pacifist marvel up until the time the Ketaari subjugated her entire culture. An example of this missing heartbeat is evidenced in how Saakshi was imprisoned for her association with rebels, yet the reader never really gets to see her acting like a rebel. For that matter, even the brutal retribution of vengeful Zoran takes place largely off page. Show me, don't let Joral tell me (and Saakshi) what happened.
Landon has created a political situation where a military power is training rebels that eerily echoes circumstances on Earth. Knowing how these situations turn out (Taliban, Iran-Contra, etc.) will make any reader distinctly uncomfortable in a secure future for any of those invested in rebellion or suppressing rebellion. However, Landon has created a distinct "good guys" vs "bad guys" mentality, a little like the Rebels and the Empire in Star Wars. The impetus will be the revolution of the Budheya people. War is coming, and Zoran just lit the match. Ironically, he did it for love.
There are a few pacing problems and some streamlining is needed. I found it particularly troublesome that the hot-burning romance got sidetracked in the strangest of ways. However, Zoran proves that for all his alpha physique and military training, he is a man who thinks about consequences, both personally and militarily. The love story between Zoran and Saakshi is richly layered, predictable and not. In addition, Landon has created a host of characters and worlds that I want to read in the future. She has tantalized with several potential leading men, and I can't wait to see the heroines with whom they are matched. Count me in for the next book....or four.
She belonged to what was once the most advanced civilization in the galaxy. When her world was taken over by enemy forces, she became part of the rebellion. Now Saakshi is a prisoner, serving her term working tables in a space station bar. She has no rights, no protection and will do anything to save herself when an old enemy comes walking back into her life. She needs a protector, but at what cost can she strike a bargain?
Zoran is a powerful mercenary warrior. He is drawn to a small young barmaid, and when she needed help he was there, but he wasn’t prepared for the deal she offered him to be her protector. Was it her fire, her fear or her innocence that drew him to her? Could he live with himself if he took what she offered? Could he live with himself if he didn’t?
All is fair in love and war, but when two souls find an oasis of love amidst the chaos of war, they will have the united power to create a revolution.
Petra Landon’s THE MERCENARY is more than science fiction. It is a love story filled with all of the passionate trappings that make hearts beat just a little faster. Sizzle and science fiction meld together as the foundation for a new series comes alive.
Ms. Landon can definitely write romance and her science fiction is not over-the-top, it was almost too tame, but this is only the beginning!

So glad to have my hands on another Petra Landon book! Her first book The Prophecy was a great book and I had high expectations for this book as well. I have to say; Petra Landon did not let me down! The Prophecy is categorized as Fantasy and this one is in the Science Fiction genre and I'm blown away on how well Petra Landon can handle both these genres. The worldbuilding in her books are amazing!
If I'm honest... I can't imagine Petra Landon NOT becoming a bestselling author one day. I highly advise anyone who likes Fantasy/Sci-Fi to pick up one of her books and keep your eyes open for her new books. This is a very professional author whose strength is the worldbuilding which totally comes from her imagination. If you're a sucker for some good romance, action and great worldbuilding you should pick up this book. I will not stop reading these books, talking about these books, promoting these books. Petra Landon deserves huge audiences reading her books, so I really hope to persuade some people to just try one of her books!
While there is a bit of telling rather than showing, this is a top-notch sci-fi romance! The characters are relatable and sympathetic and the story draws the reader in immediately. For anyone who enjoys sci-fi with a bit of steam, this series holds the promise of becoming a fabulous addition. Would highly recommend giving it a try!
Overall impression: a mostly enjoyable sci-fi romance with minimal smut and a well-developed plot. The characters could have been fleshed out a bit more and the story could have been left without the cliff-hanger, but it was still engaging and worth the read.
✅ The romance was sweet but peaked early. The first few chapters between Saakshi and Zoran sizzled and their relationship developed quickly and sweetly. But over the course of the book, poor communication made the romance fizzle out until it picked up again right at the end of the book. I didn't really buy the explanation the author gave for them spending months apart, but it was still fine in the end. I'm more of a slow-burn type of gal, but it's good to change it up every once in a while.
✅ Saakshi was a strong and sympathetic heroine. Saakshi was the most developed character in the book by far with an interesting backstory, steady morals and consistent personality. I liked that the author spent the time exploring her culture too, allowing readers to fully appreciate and sympathise with her fight for freedom. There were a few scenes where her shyness made me roll my eyes, but each to their own.
⚖️ The storyline was incomplete and slow at times. I understand that this is the first book in the series, but I felt like it ended very abruptly and awkwardly. The second book is from a different character's perspective too, so I don't anticipate it picking back up very smoothly. Some parts and conversations between different characters were also quite slow, which made me want to skim-read. But after all of that complaining, sci-fi always finds a way to suck me back in with it's action and adventure.
⚖️ The world building could have been stronger. Sci-fi is known for it's extreme detail when it comes to exploring foreign worlds, cultures, languages and traditions. While some of this was done really well in The Mercenary, I feel like I could never really picture where the scenes were actually taking place. Sadly, the world-building was lacking for my taste.
❌ Zoran was a weakly developed hero. I definitely feel like Zoran was under-developed. Unfortunately the author told us rather than showed us what he was like. We were told that he was strong and scary, but then this never really showed through his actions or descriptions about him. In fact, he came across as lacking basic emotions and being boring at times. Definitely a let down, but the romance was still cute with his protectiveness.
Side note: I'm on the fence about reading book two in the series. We were introduced to the two main characters in book one but I don't really feel that strongly about either of them or about the continuation of the plot.
I just finished The Mercenary and was blown away by the story. I thought the blurb was interesting and I was not disappointing. I thought the world building was great and the story well written and very addicting. After the first chapter I was hooked and finished the story in one sitting. A great book 1 for an engaging scifi story with action and romance. There was a little tiny bit of mystery added to make things interesting that raised questions that I hope will be answered in later books. The characters were rich, well rounded, and easy to like or hate. I cannot wait for the next one.
I'm giving this a 3 for its potential, but the execution, unfortunately was a little flawed.
Let's ignore the insta-love completely, which everyone knows that I have problems with already, and just focus on the writing and general storyline.
For a book that covers the meeting of its main characters, development of a relationship, and organization and execution of a revolution, it was a lot of story for a mere 200 pages and more time should have been spent on world- and relationship-building. Also, for such a short book, there were a few instances of repeat explanations that should have been cut out.
And then let's take the whole premise, shall we? Zoran organizes an alliance between three different groups to overthrow an Empire, all because Saaskhi said they couldn't be together because of the current situation....That's a little much, no? Romantic, sure. But maybe not so realistic.
And then let's briefly touch on the fact that, though Saakshi is supposed to be a part of the rebellion, she is completely left out of the planning of the revolution, which is orchestrated completely by men, and Saakshi requires being saved by men so many times throughout the book. Not really a book that's a friend to feminism, is it?
Also, there was a lot of head-hopping, which I'm not really a fan of. And it also wasn't consistent. It was mostly from Saakshi's POV, but with others randomly thrown in.
Ok, I know that's a lot of complaints. But despite all that, there was still a lot of potential here. The characters were strong at times and the general idea was engaging (if not necessarily original). But I feel like there isn't a lot of romance in science fiction, so as someone who likes science fiction, but needs some romance in there, I appreciated the effort in this.
This book was so strange, it had such an 80s/90s feel to it. In fact I double checked when this was written as I couldn't quite work it out. It reminded me of an old fashioned bodice ripper...the hero was a lot older and in a position of power, the heroine was younger and was powerless (she was a slave). The heroine asks the hero to protect her in return for use of her body. There wasn't quite a forced seduction (nice way of saying rape), however, the heroine was under the impression she had no choice, even though this wasn't the case, when they first had sex. Very 90's style.
It also censored swearing which was very strange. Instead of saying fuck it was written as f**k. If you didn't want it to be said, why use the word?
The story also didn't make such sense. I didn't understand why the heroine, a young rebel recruit in a resistance movement. A recruit who managed to get caught before she had done anything, would have any valuable information. And yet, a whole coalition of planets were willing to come to the Resistance's aid based on her testimony...?
This wasn't for me, although I liked both the hero and the heroine well enough, I just found the whole book as a whole baffling and the romance never grabbed me.
Two things are needed for me to LOVE a book. 1. of course is the content and how it's written. If it doesn't catch my interest and/or the writing is terrible, I pretty much shelf the book. I can't deal with that - life is too short and there's too many great and wonderful books out there to get to. 2. some romance. It doesn't need much, but I do need some. ;) I'm a mushy person, I can't help it.
The Mercenary contained BOTH of my prerequisites. I very much enjoyed the read. Of course, there's the MC: Saakshi. She's a very innocent and naïve person most of the time. She's placed in prison and is serving out her time waitressing at a bar. Along comes Zoran, who has had his sights on her for sometime. I know this is sci-fi, and it's great, but Zoran.IS.HOT. What's not to like? A protector, someone that looks out for your best interest, has a soft heart and is ethical. And he looks like, well what he is: a mercenary. He's built and tatted. **purrrrr** (I just re-read what I wrote. It's kind of a paradox: Zoran's a mercenary, but is ethical. This is very true. I don't know if he didn't unsavory things in his past, but it seems as though he thinks things through. So, I'm gonna keep on loving him.)
Things heat up between the two characters. Zoran states his interest, but naïve Saakshi doesn't get it. He keeps working at it until, FINALLY!, she realizes she's in love with him and that he already loves her. I love the cat and mouse play, I really do.
As their story unravels, we travel with them through their ups and downs. We see Saakshi learning more about herself and Zoran, and finally growing as a person. I think for most people, it's difficult to find their place in the world and it takes time. We get to see her find her place.
I really enjoyed the descriptive aspect of the book. Sci-fi can sometimes be difficult to picture and imagine, but this is written very descriptively. It made it very easy to conceptualize everything. I almost thought at times it was too descriptive, but that's completely subjective.
What blew me away about this book is how intricate and well thought out it is. I mean, there are so many aspects to the novel that I wouldn't have thought about. It was a really superb read and I'm looking forward to reading more from Petra Landon.
When I read the synopsis on this I just knew it would be something that I would enjoy. I love fantasy books, however, I mostly read ones more on the side of witches, werewolves, angels etc so i was excited to see what this book had in store for me.
I can tell you I was not disappointed at all.
I loved Patra's writing style. The way she describes the intimate encounters is very clever. She does it in a way that details what is happening without being crude. it sounds strange but I have got used to reading adult style books with a lot of swearing in and quite explicit scenes but it was a very refreshing change to read a book that didn't have this and it goes to show that you can write an interesting fantasy book, with a romantic aspect that doesn't have to have a bunch of foul language in it.
I absolutely Love Saaksha as a character.. she is vunlerable but also strong, and very smart. Zoran is a hard core merc with a super soft heart and I knew from the start that, regardless of how the story ended I would like his character.
The mercenary will definitely take you on a roller coaster.. it is quite fast paced but not too fast that you lose the plot or get confused.
I would 100% recommend this book

The Mercenary (The War Chronicles #1) by Petra Landon
The author offered me a review copy and I'd been reading along and enjoying it mightily. Very strong and likeable characters, slimy bad guys, great world building, romance, action, page turning plot – everything I love in a book. And then I ran into one of those traffic jams that occasionally appear on everyone's life highway and couldn't read for weeks! Yes, it was very painful but my point is this book lingered in my mind. I found myself thinking about the characters and what further facets will be revealed, what plot twists they had yet to face, how they might react and rooting for them to succeed. When life untangled itself I finished it and loved every minute but the story still lingers in my mind. To me, this is the sign of a great book and a great author.
Currently there is only one in the series but it is obviously set up for more – can't wait! I'll definitely be getting the next one. I did pick up the other book she has out, The Prophecy (Saga of the Chosen, #1), which is at the top of my TBR list.
Thanks to the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Saakshi is a gentle soul but that doesn't mean she won't defend herself. Orphaned as a child, captured, imprisoned, and practically a slave, she has been through much in her life. Even so she still has an innocent guileless heart. I was in rapt attention when she was put between two difficult choices. Either succumb to the enemy slimeball or ask Zoran for help in return for sexual favors. I love how brave she was and I really enjoyed Zoran's reaction. Priceless. Very exciting book. Towards the end of the book things started slowing down even though there was a battle. Their time spent reuniting at the end was very sweet though.
The Mercenary (The War Chronicles, #1) by Petra Landon is a good book. This book features an interesting, complex and highly detailed storyline and world. Saakshi and Zoran are great characters that have good chemistry. I liked and enjoyed this book and recommend it to readers that enjoy well written sci-fi, fantasy romance. I am posting an honest review after reading an ARC copy of this book.
With all the watered down sci-fi we are flooded with, Petra Landon brings back true sci-fi with The Mercenary. From the first page I was drawn into the world that was weaved. I felt truly bad and angry at the injustice and the deplorable way Saakshi and her people, the Budheya, have been treated by the Ketaari. Saakshi was arrested on her home planet from those who have invaded and taken it over, Ketaari. While serving her prison contract at an alehouse she meets Zoran. Saakshi is threatened by a Ketaari and asks Zoran for an unusal bargain. Zoran agrees and then starts the ride of Saakshi's life. I was drawn into this book early and my attention didn't stray. Saakshi is a bit shy but also strong. She fights for her beliefs and for her life. She is a very likable character who will have you rooting for her. Zoran is a strong warrior and also a mercenary. He'd been watching Saakshi for months before their initial meeting. I loved Zoran, he's very tough and hard but also balanced that out with his sweet side. Together they face many obstacles in trying to free the Budheya people from the Ketaari. Most times I was on the edge of my seat scared for them, but Zoran knows how to survive and makes sure he does! This is definitely a book I will recommend to everyone. It was refreshing. The writing was flawless. The characters very likable. Everything about this book will draw you in. I don't want to leave this world and I'm excited for the next book to come out!

The Mercenary, by Petra Landon is the first book in a planned series based around the characters we find in this story and their adventures through space, as they fight for the freedom of their people and the Alliance. As a standalone novel it is a success and as an introduction to a different world, with many weird and wonderful races, it is equally a huge success.
Saakshi, the main character in this story is a former Budeyan rebel, who had been imprisoned by the occupying, Ketaari Imperial Forces. When her prison contract is sold to Pik, a trader on a distant space station, she finds herself waiting tables at his bar and as always, scrabbling to survive and keep her dignity intact. The Budeyan people, although now subjugated by the Ketaari, were once a proud, technologically advanced, race, who were deeply respected throughout the Universe. When a handsome, Hadari’Kor Mercenary starts frequenting Saakshi’s bar and showing an obvious interest in her, Saakshi’s life will change forever.
Zoran, the Hadar’Kor Mercenary and Saakshi’s saviour from Ketaari harassment on the Space Station will forever change her life and so begins a complicated and at times, fraught relationship between two separate races across the Universe. It is this relationship and Zoran’s intense feelings for Saakshi, plus the enmity between the Ketaari Empire and much of the rest of the galaxy that provides the excitement, conflict, drama and passion of this story.
Landon has done a superb job of drawing her two main characters. Saakshi is a fierce and strong young woman who through circumstances is forced to seek help from a stronger, more powerful male, in Zoran. She doesn’t quite know how to handle Zoran’s intensity and his total commitment to the people he loves. She dares to dream of a different future, but is always saddled by the pain and angst she had already suffered at the hands of the Ketaari. Although the two characters are extremes in many ways, Landon gives their story a realism and induces the reader to openly root for the pair.
The book is an incredibly easy read and the writing flows beautifully. I am not generally a science fiction buff, but for me, this was more than science fiction – it was true romance that just happened to be set in space. I was impressed with Landon’s ability to write the steamy, sex scenes that, although infrequent, were definitely a highlight of the read. The idea of two separate beings, from different worlds, mating and experiencing the joys of sex was part of the attraction. But the emotional, romantic, connection, as well as the potential for misunderstanding and confusion, between the two parties, I felt was fully portrayed by the author. The scenes themselves were hot, exciting and very realistic, giving the author full poetic license to depart, albeit briefly, from the standard, space battle scenes of many science fiction stories.
This isn’t the first book of Petra Landon’s that I’ve read and I can guarantee it will not be the last. As a reader I like Science Fiction that is not too heavy on technological wizardry, but more focused on character building and relationships. The Mercenary fulfils this brief perfectly for me and as the set-up for a series of books it couldn’t be a better start. Five big stars from this reviewer.
The Mercenary by Petra Landon is the latest of her brilliant work. I was curious to see what Petra Landon was going to do in this new book. A book that begins a new series. That’s the best news to hear after having read the tale. I was hooked instantly. The main characters drew me into their world.
Their world is full of danger, risks, loss, and happens in space. Space crafts, space stations, and different planets. Each planet with a world of its own. Theirs several major groups of military involved. There’s the Alliance (the good guys), the Hadari’Kor (bestwarriors & also good guys), and the Imperial Ketaari Imperial Forces (the bad guys).
The leading protagonists are a determined woman set on surviving the Ketaari dangers and a mighty warrior set on saving her and her people. Zoran attends Saakshi’s workplace to relax. But once he sets on eyes on her, the fierce Hadari’Kor warrior, can’t stop from caring about her. Saakshi tries to ignore the intense stares from the warrior. She feels no fear when she sees him. But soon trouble comes to her. A Ketaari officer remembers her from her home planet. A planet under the bad rule of the Ketaari. This officer stalks her, threatens, and hurts her. But soon fate intervenes and both Saakshi and Zoran are pulled together. She comes to him asking for help. He automatically helps her despite the offer she makes. Zoran falls in love with the beautiful tough woman. Only she believes he’s doing it for her offer…but Saakshi soon discovers that’s not the case. Can she bear her heart to love when she was in danger?
The Mercenary is a sci-fi fantasy novel, I’ll never forget. Epic and completely flawless. I fell in love with the characters. Their destiny was beautiful. The dangers made it more enticing to follow. I never knew what to expect next. A warrior who hides his facial expressions well, a rebel woman who’s afraid to open her heart, and a group set to destroy them both. Enchanting, thrilling, and full of adventure. Petra Landon created another magnificent page turner. I couldn’t stop reading it. Overall, I highly recommend this novel to all.
Definitely my newest addition to Authors and series I must keep an eye out for new releases from!! The story of a prisoner who is basically on a work release program and meets the tall dark and extremely well built man of her dreams appealed to my every favorite fantasy! Set in space and on the edges of civilizations where roughness is a definite advantage, it takes what appears to be a small helpless female and shows us how strong and resilient she really can be.
The author captured my imagination and my emotions both with the cultural differences they had to overcome as well as just the usual miscommunication between men and women. I was captivated from page one and couldn't put it down until I finished. While it's not technically a cliff hanger style ending, it is definitely a serial ending, leaving you with promises of more of the same. As an independent reviewer for Romance Authors that Rock, it was an easy 5 hearts for this author and her worlds!
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley for a honest review.

I came upon this book The Mercenary by Petra Landon and I was super excited, I love a good sci-fi romance. This book was really good, in fact the sign of a good book for me is when I don't want to rush reading it. This book pretty much had everything I love in a good sci-fi romance book, world building, that wasn't overly complicated but interesting enough that I was in that world, two main character's that fell in love and more character's in the story that you can see will be having their own romance in hints here and there. I loved both Saakshi and Zoran and I was a bit sad to to see their story end but the good new is we'll probably see more of them and this story line in the next couple's book. I walked away from this book feeling good and anticipating the next book.
The author did a great job of making a world I could picture in my head while also coming up with characters I could get behind and come to love. Zoran is a very endearing guy I couldn't help but like, but I would have enjoyed having more from his point of view. Saashki and Zoran's story drew me in from the beginning. They were two people drawn to each other at a time of great distress. When I got to the last chapter I had my doubts how the story was going to be wrapped up. Their story wasn't just wrapped up nicely, but left me wanting more. There are other characters I would love to read a story about plus other things I want to find out what happens. *I was gifted a copy for an honest review.*
Definitely a must read by Landon! I got the opportunity to read another of her work earlier and this is just as amazing as the last one! She has a way with words and characters. The story is really gripping and the narration is just beautiful! You don't want to miss out on her books.
Good, solid science fiction romance story. I really enjoyed the characters, world-building and plot. I felt the book lagged a bit in the 2nd half, but I am glad I kept reading. The end wraps up things nicely for the hero and heroine while hinting at the continuation of the story.
The Mercenary (The Araloka Chronicles #1) by Petra Landon
