A very heartfelt, touching, tearjerker book! This is the first book I've read by this author. It was extremely interesting to read the man's point of view regarding his deep grief at losing his mother to cancer. Usually, you think men "just get over it" quickly but Jax deals with his grief through the whole book. It's especially hard for him because he also lost his father when he was young, and his 3 younger sisters think that he will just take care of everything after their mother's death too. It becomes too much for him! I think it brings home the thought that we all need to lean on someone at times, but Jax didn't have anyone. That is, until he meets Gwen, his neighbor, who has gone through a traumatic physical attack a year previously and is still living through the aftermath. They decide to help each other emotionally, and of course, grow closer. There is a strong faith element. Neither one is particularly close to God at this point. I loved that dogs played a big role in the story too! A very emotional story that I loved!
