Moms Against Zombies

Rate this book
A mother protects her young, even if that means fighting Zombies

Emma Jackson is an army wife, a new mom and a force to be reckoned with. After being chased by a man that looks half-decomposed her concerns take a turn from diaper changing and feeding schedules to protecting her baby.

Trish Walsh dreaded taking all four kids on errands. She expected tantrums, nagging and sibling wars in the backseat, not a man beating on her window. He looked half dead and the bloody mess he left behind made her skin crawl and fear clutch her throat.

Cooper Walsh has a top secret job but when criminals break in to steal his company’s secrets he discovers a conspiracy that could either explain everything or nothing at all. It’s up to him to right this wrong.

Moms Against Zombies is the first book in the Against Zombies series. As always Alathia Morgan doesn’t disappoint. You’re taken on a vivid journey as the zombie apocalypse begins and witness firsthand how these mothers would do anything to be reunited with their families and to keep them safe from the horror that is about to come.

Interesting read

I enjoyed this book and finished it in one day. I had never read a zombie book before and liked the authors take on it. At times it felt like the second or third book in a series instead of the first, which bothered me a bit. Also the formatting was a little off; although, it might just be that way since I read it on my phone. I like that even though it's a series the end was wrapped up enough to feel finished. I hate cliff endings and will stop reading a series that has them. I will most likely try to get the next book when it comes out.

This book is unrealistic and borders on idiotic at times. I have a hard time following the reasoning behind decisions and explanations. It is poorly done.
A woman sees an injured man on the street and therefore concludes there was an emergency somewhere. She doesn’t want to help him because of her newborn baby she has to take care of although he is bleeding. Well ok then.
But then the author switches suddenly to her hoping the injured man doesn’t carry a gun?!
Which in that instant doesn’t make much sense to me after the first interpretation of the situation.

A few pages later without a reason said woman proclaims some people would assume she has no brains or that she is depending on her husband. Why? Is it her look? Or behaviour why people would assume that? It simply isn’t mentioned.
But then the author switches to her explaining that she is intelligent because she has trust in her husband and his words as well as his profession. What that has to do with her having brains, while simply trusting her husband, i still don’t understand really.

Such thought processes are all over the book. One injured person and puff she concludes a major event is happening. That is just a sloppy work from an author. Take more professionalism and back that up with events presented in the newspapers or radios, make it believable. But this? Simply sloppy work.
Looks like all the characters have the gift of premonition down to a T in this book.
It is odd and unrealistic, because of that I lost my interest early on.
One man can’t confront two villains, reasoning they have military training, to start acting like a spy out of a James Bond movie not two sentences later. Presenting a secret phone himself, hidden guns in the office building and hidden duffel bags all over the place, it is fairly to say this has lost all credibility.
Those are not “normal” people.
Everyone had hidden guns and emergency packs, had a plan in case of an apocalypse or war. Where is the fun in that? This is so far from reality, it kills the whole joy of this genre. Watching and accompanying people who struggle and grow in such unpredicted and Extreme circumstances, that is the main point.

But that could have been overlooked, many authors take the easy way and present characters that have at least some military background or knowledge in prepping. If the thought process, the reasonings behind it would have made sense and were authentic. That decisions would be based on coherent thoughts and events, yeah then it could have been a good idea.
But presented like this I doubt it will reach a broader audience. It was a catastrophe to read.

Was there no one not biased to proof read? No editor who would do their job properly?

Definitely had potential
But had too many points of view with too many characters and too few zombies to really make it from good to great. May read others in the series if I am stuck for something to read, but not rushing into the next book

"I don't know about you, but I don't plan to face the zombie apocalypse sober." When I read this line, I thought that I had found a true treasure in the zompoc genre. Alas, after finishing the book, I can't say that is true. I have to say that I just didn't really enjoy this book that much.

The premise of Moms fighting against zombies is intriguing, but the story just didn't follow up to my satisfaction. First of all, the book is told from two different POV's with no overlapping of characters. I found it difficult to follow while bouncing between these two POV's.

Next, we have a character who is a covert agent/spy who has set up a hideaway for his family "just in case". The author introduced a possible fake zombie attack being perpetrated in order to steal some top-secret government project. At the exact same time, zombies are actually overrunning the area. How likely is that? Not very. It is never resolved as to what is actually happening. Are there really zombies or is it all a corporate takeover gone bad?

There is very little zombie action in the book and it ends up being mostly a discussion of one family's hideaway in the mountains of Tennessee. Very reclusive, downright strange family and lots of talk about their isolationism from the rest of the world. There are a lot of characters and I had a hard time trying to figure out how they were related. Also, some of the characters don't seem to be combat trained or hardened soldiers, but are able to easily kill people when confronted and walk away with a smile.

Then, we have the new mother, Emma, deciding that she won't continue breastfeeding her baby because of the zompoc. What? You have a ready food supply and you're going to instead start feeding the baby store-bought formula? I don't think so.

If you decide to read this book, be aware that nothing is resolved and in order to see what happens, you will have to read the subsequent sequels. I'm not sure how many more books are in the series, but I don't think I will be trying to find out. There are too many action-packed and more believable zombie books to read instead of the ones in this series.

Review of Moms against Zombies

When it comes to zombies, it turns out I prefer the funny campy zombies. This story is grounded in more reality than any zombie book I’ve read.

Moms against Zombies is a complex tale of various families dealing with something out of the twilight zone: real Zombies are invading the country and multiplying in horrific speed. So the various families try to move to a more isolated place to survive the apocalypse.

While some believed it a hoax, hired actors dressed as zombies, so thieves could steal valuable date, matters quickly prove it is a real viral contagion. (As in REALITY BITES!)

When the mothers realize something isn’t right, and sluggish people are creeping them out, they grab their kids and drive home. And while the cities are trying to downplay the event, the disturbances they’ve seen with their own eyes, and calls from their husbands send them in hyper-protect the children mode, and head to more isolated areas.

Lesson to learn: Don’t get between a mom and her children. She will protect them with lethal force. It doesn’t matter if you are a zombie or a living human who just wants to rob her of the items she needs to keep her children safe. Either way, she will fight back.

Honestly, this was an engaging, well written, and a realistic scenario of a viral contagion that takes over a body in seconds. And as in common in real life, the ‘truth’ keeps changing as well as they dig deeper and learn more about their situation.

But be warned, this book seems to stop mid-story with the promise of the conclusion coming in the next book.

Due to the lack of an ending, I can’t give it more than four stars right now. It was well written, amazing authentic, but it is incomplete. However, I look forward to book 2 to find out what actually has happened and hopefully get an HEA.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book started great and then it got ridiculous. Days after the zombie apocalypse started, they were still able to go to a Costco and grab some lunch! What!?! Your kids are left at home and you've seen dead people walking but let's stop and grab a bite. Then the weird "initiation" was just cruel and strange. So the warning about the mean uncle wasn't real, the cold shoulder to the sister-in-law wasn't real, or was just the blessing? It's not the worst zombie book I read, but not the best. I was hooked in by the high rating.

It was a bit jarring with all of the hopping around POV but it was a fast paced interesting read. Just don't like open ended endings and wish there was a bit more zombie action.

I love a good zombie book, and throw in two kick ass moms it makes for a good read.
There are two occurring stories in this book, one following Emma and her newborn son Pierce getting the call from her military husband to leave the city and head to Nana & Pop in the mountains and the other following Trish her kids and her husband Cooper, who seems to be more than meets the eye job wise - you think he is just some IT guy, but as the story progresses you soon realise that he has some kind of secret government job and the "zombie " outbreak is something he has been preparing for for a very long time.

Both moms will do anything to protect their kids, and with the help from family they are well prepared for anything that happens. Neither has crossed paths as of yet, so I am not 100% sure where the story is going in connecting these two moms as it kinda just ended....

There was all this build up of getting the women prepared, out their respective cities, out to the safety of the mountains or countryside with quite a bit of story about Cooper, to make you want to know more. But I did not realise that it would be in another book that we will find out answers...

Not cool.... so for that 4 stars as I was just getting really into the story for it to just end like it did...

**I received an ARC which I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.**

Starting off, I will say that the formatting of this book's Kindle edition almost put me off on reading it. There are line spaces in the middle of sentences. It did make the novel hard to read.

Moms Against Zombies is told in multiple POVs (first and third person). This wrecked the flow of the story as it felt as if Morgan could not decide a point of view. There are jumps between the chapters. For example, there is Chapter 1 which is followed by Chapter 2. Then the story jumps to Chapter Six and Seven and then Chapter 10. Perhaps, the scenes in certain chapters could be broken up to fill these gaps.

Morgan gives the name of the character that each chapter and scene jumps that the POV is in. This helps reinforce who that particular chapter | scene is about.

There were a couple of times that I found the characters’ reactions unbelievable. Because of this and despite trying to like the book because of the Zombie Apocalypse through a mother’s eye angle, I found this novel to be a chore to read. I would read it in spurts, coming back to it to read a little bit more.

Moms Against Zombies is the first part of a series. I would recommend anyone who likes a story that is focused on character development.

Emma Jackson is a new mom at the doctor’s office when she first realizes something is wrong when she sees her first zombie. Emma doesn’t realize that she is seeing a zombie all she knows is that she has to get her baby to safety before they are attacked. Emma doesn’t realizes that she was seeing a zombie until she gets a call from her husband who is in the army who gives her a call and tells her to take their son and go to Nana and Pop’s in the mountains. Nana and Pop’s place is good distance from any town or city so therefor would be less populated and so hopefully not many zombies. Emma’s husband knows that his family will take care of her and the baby because the Jackson Clan take care of their own.

Trish and Cooper Walsh have been preparing for an apocalypse for a very long time. So when her husband calls her and tells her to put their plan in place and take the kids to her sister’s farm she doesn’t hesitate not especially after the day she has had and what she saw while in town with her four kids.

Cooper is supposed to meet them there but he gets held up just as he is leaving his office. Someone has broken into his office with intentions of stealing all of his company’s secrets. Cooper must stop them from being able to accomplish what they came there for. As far as Trish and the world knows Cooper is an IT guy but as we learn this is not the case. No what Cooper does is very top secret.

I love me some zombies and I loved following along with these two mothers on their journeys with their children trying to keep them safe and away from the zombies. Emma and Trish may think that they would never be any good in a fight or especially up against zombies but when it comes to you and their children you might what to get out of their way cause they gonna mow you down. I can’t wait to read more about Emma and Trish and all their children. I would also like to know more about the Jackson Clan and about Trish’s sister too and what about Cooper and his job?

Moms Against Zombies is a great story for anyone who loves a good zombie story.

Kindle Unlimited but heard about it in one of my facebook groups AND it was on freebie day.

Emma Jackson is an army wife and new mom with all the uncertainties that come with it… until that fear is pushed in a different direction. Instead of worrying about diapers and feeding schedules, her only objective is to keep her child alive after being chased by a man who looks entirely too dead.
Trish Walsh thought her day was bad when she had to drag all four of her children on an errand, but she rethinks the meaning after what she can only hope was someone dressed up like a zombie beats on her car door. Yet, the bloody mess left behind is anything but reassuring.Cooper Walsh’s job is top secret. When criminals break in to steal his company’s secrets, he overhears the conspiracy devised to create chaos as a cover-up. Knowing he must do everything in his power to right the wrong, he sets out on a mission.Surviving long enough to reunite with their families is all that matters. That… and stopping the zombie apocalypse before it destroys them.

So I went into Moms Against Zombies thinking it will be a kick butt book that was action packed and a little like the Walking Dead but with some bad ass moms. Now the moms in this story are bad ass and they get what needs to be done, done. But it isn't as action packed with the zombies as I thought it would be, which this doesn't take away from the story because there is still so much going on and as a mom it all had me in a panic! We have 2 different moms and 2 different stories happening here. Emma with her newborn and a husband over seas and Trish with her 4 kids and IT husband Cooper. Both moms are in full mom protection mode and will do anything to make sure their families are taken care of! I thought at some point they would meet but they didn't the ending just happened and I was left wanting more. And I'm not really sure what will happen next.

I'm not a fan of books that alternate between multiple stories. Because I tend to read in spurts, it just gets to be too many characters too quickly. So I found this one a chore to read. Very little action for the opening of a zombie apocalypse.

And not a complete story. Just the first entry in a series. Which I'll not be continuing.

✯✯✯✯✯

I volunteered to review this book without any promises about the review (the rating or the posting).

I’ve read other books by Alathia so it helped me to understand her writing style when it came to zombies and the apocalypse in her books. She’s incredible in weaving a not-so-horror story within a horror genre. It’s not all guts and gore as one might expect. It’s more a “Walking Dead” telling of the apocalypse. You meet and follow characters who aren’t army, military, or otherwise. You see normal untrained people doing extraordinary things while under pressure to safe those they love. This book is definitely no exception.

The following is my personal opinion and thoughts about many aspects of this book and its author.

COVER: ✯✯✯✯✯ - a perfect cover to represent the storyline. No gore or horror. Just a “mother” against the zombies. Perfection.

PLOT: ✯✯✯✯ - This book float back and forth between two main characters. Emma is a new mother with an overseas army husband. Trish is a mother of four and unknowingly has a husband whose job is top secret. Each of the husbands have information regarding the zombies and how to fight them. The story follows Emma and Trish as they prepare themselves for the life that is coming at them at warp speed. Preparing for the apocalypse isn’t always simple. And neither is family.

WRITING STYLE: ✯✯✯✯✯ - As stated above, Alathia doesn’t go for the guts and gore of a horror story. She builds the characters and gives them true personalities. We grow and learn to love them as the book progresses. It’s one of the best qualities in Alathia’s writing style.

CHARACTERS: ✯✯✯✯✯ - Emma Jackson. A new mother to six week old Pierce. She’s already uncertain about how to be a mother and then she’s thrown to the wolves with an apocalypse. Her inner strength is something all mothers can relate to.

Trish Walsh is a more experienced mother and is strong and tough. She’s tested by everyone around her including her husband and his many secrets. Through it all she’s a spitfire and a true protector.

While there are many other “main” characters I loved, the story is mostly about these two so I’m only commenting on them.

OVERALL FLOW: ✯✯✯✯✯ - While some readers prefer non-stop action, plenty of blood and gore...Alathia doesn’t write that way. And for that I’m so glad. This isn’t a story about following military/army trained killing machines. This is a story about how two women in two completely different types of lives fight to find safety and survival for their children.

This book is definitely a 5 star for me. And even though it is a “to be continued”...thankfully book 2 is now out and available. I know what I’m going to read next.

Under no circumstances was I approached by the author to read or review this book. I offered without any agreement or promise for any compensation. I am voluntarily giving my opinion about this book. My only affiliation with the author is that I am a fan and want to support by reading and posting this review of my own free will.

I'm not one for the overdone zombie apocalypse stories, but the title itself gave me the idea that this one would have a bit of a unique flavor to it. The story is told in 1st Person POV but switches main characters: moms with different backgrounds. This led me to believe that we would be reading a journal type of story from the viewpoint of several different mothers experiencing a zombie takeover in their town, but instead it just jumped between two women. This of course led me to believe that their stories would intertwine, but so far their stories are separate. The book does end abruptly, suggesting that this will become a series, so I would like to see why the story alternates between these two characters only.

A couple technical issues: the 1st Person POV story is told in present tense, which is odd and gives off the impression that we the readers are reading the minds of these two mothers as the events are currently happening. However, there were a few moments when something occurred in 3rd Person POV without either character witnessing it, so the narrator is not exactly established in this book. Also there are times when many side characters come into play simultaneously, and it's hard to keep track of who everyone is.

All that aside, I did enjoy the progression of the unfolding events, and although there was little action, you could tell this story is almost a prequel to a much bigger cataclysmic event that has yet to happen. This is more like a story about the preparation of such an incident, as well as the psychological effects it could have on everyday people. Needless to say I am intrigued and curious as to how the story will continue.

Great read!

Title: moms against zombies
Author: Alathia Paris Morgan

➡ how I felt about this book. Likes & dislikes and character's⬇
Really good read here. I love how the author wanted to start at the very being of the virus with it being hoax's to real deal zombie Apocalypse. We get to follow two different mom's and their families on how the response to the end of the world. All liked all the character's.
Not whole lot of zombie action yet in this book maybe a couple parts in the book. Even faced with zombie's they still goof around with each other and acting like normal people so we get to view each character's getting to know their personalities beforehand.

Trish was good but I like her long lost sister Jessica more for some reason. Trish's husband is little to sneaky big time for good or very bad reason. Linc I'm not totally sure about him yet.

Emma she's awesome and with new baby too!! Hope her husband okay overseas. I would have gone bat crazy if my husband was gone.
But she has his big family taking care of her and the baby. I also liked right away was Dawson, Haley, and Cole.

Overall the story wasn’t bad but it was on the short side. The author apparently does NOT understand breastfeeding, formula, or feeding a baby in order to keep it alive during food and water shortages. For instance, it’s an apocalypse and formula is no longer going to be produced. It’s the apocalypse, finding safe water will eventually become an issue. Breastfeeding provides a source of antibodies and a bunch of other stuff to keep babies healthy, boobs can also be a pacifier and smart people might want to keep babies quiet if zombies are in the area. Have you read the instructions on powdered formula? Prepare with BOILING WATER. You aren’t boiling the water becaus your city water isn’t safe (although in an apocalypse you might have to) you’re boiling it to kill the BACTERIA present in manufactured formula. Newsflash: deciding to formula feed your baby “because it’s the apocalypse” is the DUMBEST thing I have ever heard. You’re planning to give up a biologically safe food, a readily available food, in order to go LOOK and HOPE you find formula, LOOK and HOPE you have a water source, boil said water, mix the sketchy formula with boiling water, WAIT FOR IT TO COOL, and THEN feed the crying baby?

At the very least another character should have slapped that mother upside her head and said “NO! Stupid! That’s how you kill your baby.”

Please do some effing research before you publish things that can kill people. Modern western society can choose formula or breast. There’s a reason why other societies can’t, because babies die.

The story throws you in with the moms and their first encounter with a zombie. I wish the characters would have been introduced a bit more but instead I was surprised that both moms were on apocalypse mode nearly instantly and both were having „to go“ bags, guns and emergency military style drills. The kids as well. But apart from this first zombie situation, the story carries on with family gathering. The end-of-the-world threat gets nearly forgotten. Also, nobody seems to be too concerned, they are so full of themselves that they think their family can handle everything on their own. For me, I couldn't connect with any character, also, the pace was not ideal. I guess the two moms' stories will come together in the next book but I won't continue.

Excellent Entry into Series

The only reason for for stars is a few editorial errors, which as A. Paris Morgan continues to grow as a writer. The storyline is definitely there, and if I continue to read a series after book one (which is a definite!) then I consider it a win for the author. I do like the aspect that the zombies are not around every corner... yet. Not every zom-poc novel needs to rush the transmission rate to high gear.

The two groups of characters are full of interesting, well fleshed out, multilayered characters. So far I can say this first novel sets the stage for what I think will be a fascinating and excellent zombie insurgency. On to book two! Enjoy!

I wanted to read this book since I read another of Alathia Paris Morgan’s books, Infected Waters: A Titanic Disaster. In Mom’s Against Zombies, we are following two different families as the zombie outbreak begins and the story is told from the perspective of various characters, mainly two of the moms. Some of the characters reactions to an actual zombie apocalypse seemed way more relaxed than I would be, but I think this is a pretty good start to the series and I hope the stories intersect at some point.

okay, you are one sneaky lady, you have these books so well thought out, you can't just stop at book one and give it a break, you need to buy the next one and keep going. I just love these little stories Alanthia Morgan has and the characters are so detailed, i have a picture of everything going on in my head. and I absolutely love that you add more characters and they all start tieing together in some form or another. I'm going to keep reading these and you got a new fan :)

Love this book

The title drew me in from first sight and once I started reading it, I wanted more of these moms. Alathia Paris Morgan has created a great apocalyptic beginning and I can't wait to read more from her. This is also a great YA book to keep kids interested in reading . great job. Slow start, but got better...

Slow start, the characters seemed very one dimensional, but that changed quickly as you learn these mother’s are made of sterner stuff then you are led to believe. Definitely will be purchasing book two, very interested in seeing how this story develops.

A new take

There's more comedy in this book than there are zombies. It's the beginning of the apocalypse and these moms take no prisoners. A lighthearted and funny take on a zombie apocalypse. Really fun to read and if this happens I want the moms on my side.
