The first official resource on Estill Voice Training available to the general public, this book explores the scientific foundation of the Estill Voice Model with basic anatomy & physiology for each Figure, translation of the Estill terminology for the artist and clinician, and significance for vocal living and performance. With sources from world-renowned voice researchers and Jo Estill herself, this book is an essential part of any voice library.
I really Appreciate Estills approach. Its about as scientific as you can get with a craft that is so wishy washy and arbitrary. The book splits up the body into specific regions, the anatomy of that region, how one can manipulate that region, and how manipulating the region in different ways affects the sound of the singer/speaker. I think its really interesting and would definitely recommend it for singers—especially if youre really nerdy and want to know all the anatomy. This book doesn’t have much help for applying the principles it lays out though. That is its major flaw. It could also use a little tweaking in better explanation, organization, and better pictures. I did really like that the authors put in italics everything Estill directly said. It made it easy to separate the sources in my mind and how to interpret what I was reading. I borrowed this book from a teacher and he talked about how there are people trained in this model that know exercises and can hear the difference between the modifications that would help with the application if the theory. This book is short, only 200 pages. It goes into some very useful depth but theres a lot to be desired. In vocal technique this is one book you would definitely want to read but FAR from the end of your research
Although a couple of concepts have been found to be scientifically incorrect since the book was first published (After Estill), and though the book is very repetitive and misses a couple of fundamental voice science concepts, considering when it was released, it still gets five stars. Voice science wouldn't be the same without Jo Estill's work.
It's a shame that there isn't any other published comprehensive updated voice framework.
As someone who has learned from an Estill Master for quite some time and completed her level 1 and 2, I found the book useful and a great reminder of things I have learned over the years.
However, I don’t feel the book would be that accessible to those that don’t already have an understanding of Estill and therefore took off a star because I think it would be great if more simple explanations were included for those that weren’t so familiar.
