Recommended for 16+ due to profanity, dark themes, and violence.
(This is not a standalone and ends in a cliffhanger.)
USA Today bestselling author, D.E. Chapman is a fantasy novel addict that reads them as much as she writes them, often pretending to be her characters. After all, life is infinitely more exciting with magic and dragons. She hopes to one day write a book so fantastical that it creates a portal to another world. But beware, not all she writes is sunshine and happy endings. There are darker stories hiding within the depths of her mind, filled with mature content and twisted themes, so tread with caution!

Fractured Past by C.E. Chapman was a heavy, sorrowful read that will have you questioning what it is to show compassion, when there is none.
I was captured by this book, as I said it was a heavy read. The dark tones, the battle with PDST, the helplessness you felt for the MC was at times for me, overwhelming. I would like to say that I read this book in one sitting, but due to the powerful emotions that our MC expressed I had to keep putting this book down, to gather myself before moving on.
This is a must read, as it takes you down a realistic road of how broken a person can be, the struggle to trust, and the horror that you will never be normal again. The plot is strong, the story isn’t like anything you have every read.
Take my high recommendation that you will love this book!
Fractured Past is the first fantasy/young adult book from the “A Talnarin Novel Series.” Alanna is a beautiful girl living in a world where there are five species. Humans are just one of them. An experiment curses her in becoming one of the Talnarins. They too are another kind of species. They have pigmented eyes and pointy ears. Each colored eye has their own strength, and oddly enough, Alanna has a complete different pigment to the rest of the kind, making her a new species altogether. Suddenly, they very kind she was running away from, have the answers. She also learns that not all Talnarins wish to kill her. It is an epic journey of discovery for this girl with an even more impressive cliffhanger at the end of it.
The story begins with an immense amount of backstory and world building. The descriptive nature of the world is very well built and is explained in detail creating the foundations for a stronger sequel events of stories. The lead character is strong yet has her girly attributes. The ranking and division between the villagers, humans, species were fascinating. I found the whole ordeal to be intriguing and wanted to everything that there was about the categorization.
The literature was strong, and it was clear that the author had done her research. There weren’t any loopholes or odd encounters questioning the plot. The side stories and character building was strong enough to add content and richness to the plot. I particularly enjoyed the part where the author decided to go back and forth with the storytelling adding delicious content to substantiate the already heavy detailed storyline.
I rarely comment on the cover, but this one needs to be mentioned as one of the best I have seen. There is a certain appeal in the cover, title and the way it is structured and therefore, is worth mentioning.
I recommend this book for fantasy lovers that enjoy cliffhangers.
This was my first time reading something by D.E. Chapman. I will admit it was hard for me to get into the book for the first few chapters but after that, the story really took off and it was a wild ride. I really liked the main character, Alana, and I felt instantly sorry for her because she was just an innocent and naive woman leaving her home town when she was kidnapped and experimented on. You got to see her start to change as she came to grips with her new abilities, and I believe we will get to see her grow even more in the next book. She becomes stronger and determined, as she hunts down the people/person who changed her into this being she is unable to control. I do hope we get to learn more about some of the other characters in the next book because I can totally see this series spanning out over several characters and storylines. I have to admire the authors creativity, this isn't a story I think you could write easily given the heavy element of fantasy. But she pulled it off beautifully. There was never a part in the story that was unreadable or unrealistic for the genre or lazy.
Fractured past by D.E. Chapman a fantasy of a four-star read. This is the first book by this author I have read and It’s the first book in the Talnarin Novel Series and the series has started very well, the world has been built well and the characters have been well developed and you see them as very real people. There is some bad language and dark themes running through the story so its suitable for older teens and upwards. This really is a fascinating read, with lots of suspense, intrigue and drama. If you are looking for a good fantasy read then this will be the book for you, the only problem is don’t read it till the second book is released if you don’t like a cliff hanger ending. If you can cope with the drama cliff hangers leave you with, get this book read in anticipation as you won’t be disappointed. When you read this book keep at it, the first few chapters a lot happens and you need to really pay attention to understand all of the species of the world and the unique talents and effects they have. If you keep reading you will end up with a great read.
Fractured Past (A Talnarin Novel Book 1) D.E. Chapman 5 Stars “What would it be like to live in a place where they accept me for me, deformities and all? What would it be like to have a place to stay again? To not have to concern myself with scavenging or hunting for food. To actually have conversation with someone other than myself. To have someone teach me what I need to know and grow stronger. To talk with someone who can sympathize and understand what it’s like to be me.” Alanna is from a human village, one night she went exploring. She never thought the amazing light show she found would turn into her worse nightmare. When she finally escapes the torture and pain the Others put her through, she is very broken and scared. She tries to find help but then ends up in a worse situation, however a stranger helps her out and tells her where she can find the help she needs. Alanna is scared to trust anyone, when she cannot take the loneness any more she tries to accept help. She learns more about herself and her abilities, but she is still guarded and will not tell anyone that she is a hybrid. Gave this book five stars, could not put it down. Fractured Past is a good read for young adults and readers that like sci-fi. I enjoyed the unique names and places. I can kind of see this taking place on Earth, before roads were laid on the ground. Fractured Past take place on a planet called Bylir, and a good amount of the book takes place in a village called Craforian. D.E. Chapman did an amazing job with this book. My heart broke for Alanna, she wanted to be her own person and now she cannot seem to find anyone to accept her. She has so much anger and is out for revenge for the Talnarin that made her a hybrid. Alanna is so scared to tell anyone her story in fear that they will hurt her or worse kill her. No matter what she goes through, she fights to survive for one reason. The flashes back were the only thing that was hard for me to understand because they seemed to me to be all over the place and not in order. However, I understand why D.E. Chapman wrote them that way. The book has a glossary and the first chapter of Spilt Secrets. I found the chapters short and action packed, those two element’s made it a quick read for me. I cannot wait to read book two; Spilt Secrets.
I give Fractured Past (A Talnarin Novel book 1) by D.E. Chapman 4 stars.
This was quite an interesting book. Alanna is struggling in the beginning, she doesn’t know who she is anymore. She has had things happen to her against her will. Terrible, unimaginable things. Things most people would lose their mind after. But she is strong, and all she can think about is revenge. It’s all that drives her. This is something most people can understand, even possibly relate to.
In the beginning of the book, you are along for the ride as Alanna seeks someone, something. Then she realizes she may need more training, so she ends up in a place with the peoples she considers her enemy. She decides to learn what she can quickly and trust no one. You can also relate to this part of her too. At the same, you just wish she would open up and start to trust people. These people seems to be genuine, but by now you are starting to feel the paranoia of Alanna and wonder if these people are for real. The action really starts in the latter part of the book and once started, you will not be able to put it down. You are so excited to see just what happens next.
The strong character of Alanna is what really makes this book. She is someone you can see as yourself or someone you know. The story starts to pick up and I can’t wait to read the next book to see where the story goes. I hope this series lasts a long time.
Fractured Past is the first book in A Talnarin Novel Series by D.E Chapman. This is Ms. Chapman’s debut novel and is a fantasy/sci-fi story with suspense, drama, dark themes and violence. I am really impressed by this story, it is a superb first instalment in the series- and a brilliant debut for this talent author. Alanna is struggling with what happened to her. She really doesn’t know who or what she is, anymore. The horrible, dreadful things that she was forced to experience drove her to the edge, if it were not for her strength she may have succumbed. Now she is out for revenge- it’s almost all she can think about. But to accomplish this and have any chance at succeeding, she is going to need to hone some new skills. She has no choice but to seek out the enemy to help her prepare. She knows she can’t trust anyone, can she? The author takes us on an action-packed adventure along with Alanna, that is intense and intriguing. You won’t want to miss a thing. Ms. Chapman’s world building is sublime, incredibly realistic and believable. She paints a picture with vivid, rich details that are entirely captivating. The characters are quite outstanding, really well developed, interesting and very convincing. Alanna is a fantastic character, I couldn’t help but connect with her and her story. I felt for what she had been through and can understand why she was so hell bent on revenge. The storyline is unique and quite individual to the author. I was fascinated by this story and can’t wait to read the second book as this one ends on a cliff-hanger. This has all the makings of an unforgettable series!
Fractured Past is the first story by D.E. Chapman for me. And the first for her according to her Amazon page! What a great fantasy story. The main character is Alanna. She is a tough character who has experienced something horrible and then been changed into something other than human. She is determined to find the one that changed her and destroy Him. Her adventure leads to self-discovery, personal growth and the meeting of others like her and those like her enemy. Her goal has now changed to destroy all like Him and to find her inner peace.
“Never had I thought that my life would take a turn like this. This wasn’t supposed to be my reality. This wasn’t supposed to be my future. And yet here I am, learning to control a power I don’t want.”
I liked this story. Chapman expresses Alanna’s feelings clearly. Even though I don’t read many fantasy stories, I cannot wait for part two. Chapman kept me reading, in a world where anything is possible. And isn’t that what most readers are looking for? However, the ending kind of made me mad…only because I want more! Cliffhangers are my enemies!!
I can recommend this story to anyone who likes reading fantasy with a little darkness and a hint of a romance.
The first book of the Talnarin novel series by D.E. Chapman, Fractured Past, was a different kind of sci-fi fantasy book than what I've read before. I give this book 3 stars. The beginning of the book was really hard to get into, with the author going back and forth between the present day and flashbacks. Even with the flashbacks being in italicized text, I still found it difficult to connect with the story until almost halfway into the book.At times I found myself having to go back and read pages again.
I'm no quitter though, and as the book progressed I felt like I was finally able to get into the story. The characters developed well over time and the descriptions of the world was pretty good. I liked the storyline a lot and found myself more intrigued by that and the way things might unfold for the characters as the book continued. I was a little disappointed in the ending, but with the first chapter of Book 2 in the series included I felt much more satisfied and look forward to continuing the series. Overall, it was nice to have a fantasy story with a very rich environment described, especially where the book ventured out from the usual fantasy themes of vampires, shifters, and demons. I look forward to reading what comes next in the series and seeing how the author's writing develops over time.
It took me a little bit to get into this story but once I was the story of Alanna made me curious. She always wanted to experience life outside the village but it was forbidden and the elders told terrible tales about those whose left. When she got brave enough to try it, she regretted doing it.
Captured and tortured, her abductors used her for many different painful tests.
During all the testing she was changed both inside and out. She had no idea what they were trying to do but she gained new abilities. Once she escaped she was so bruised and weak it was amazing she could wander the woods for the time it took to find another village. She found the talnarins, who she needed to learn from and help her train. Her plan is revenge and she don't trust Them at all. Her main goal is to kill Him, who put her through her ordeal. She must learn to trust Malik in order to learn all she can. Very well written and waiting for more.
Fractured Past is the first book in the A Talnarin Novel Series by D.E. Chapman and her debut novel. It is a new adult, fantasy, science fiction book that had me a little unsure in the very beginning but once I settled into the story it captured my attention and held it till the very end.
The main character Alanna, is fighting for her life, where we see a lot of flashbacks as she tells us her very painful and horrific story. Alanna doesn’t seem to know just who she is any more, what she is capable of nor what she can and can’t do with a power she didn’t ask for and can not control. She is a very determined, capable and strong young woman even after all her mistreatment. She no longer knows who she can trust but finds herself in need of help. Alana finds herself in a world where everyone is capable of doing things she never dreamed of or knew existed. But just as she finds some sort of “normalcy” she finds that her very existence is seen as a threat and she must prove that she is not the enemy and that she knows more about the enemy that could help those who hold her captive. If only they would listen to her. If only she can survive long enough to reach her ultimate goal.
This story is well written and full of action, mystery and lots of suspense and I can’t wait to see what DE has in store for us in the next book..
Fractured Past (ATalnarin Novel Book 1) by D.E. Chapman At first I was not interested in the story due to all the flash backs and recent and flash back again. To be honest this story was more interesting to read after I realize what was happening in the first few chapters. D. E. Chapman was a new author to me. I usually never give up on the story by new authors because I needed to focus my attention on the story so that I can understand the shifts in time. Chapman is an artist with words. She pulls you into the story as if you are there yourself. I would definitely recommend this story to new readers.
Alana is a young woman who has a “fracture past”. The story is told through the pieces of her personal past. Alana is a charter that you immediately start bonding. Her life is one big experiment to see how she does with the powers given to her. Her will to survive is giving her the power to keep moving forward. She is learning her new way of life and it is through the “fracture past” pieces she is able to go on.
Fractured Past (A Talnarin Novel Book 1) By: D.E. Chapman 5 out of 5 stars
The story Fractured Past (A Talnarin Novel Book 1) by D.E. Chapman is a new adult/fantasy/science fiction book. This is a story that starts by introducing you to the character of Alanna. You read how she is alone, in need of food and water, and also from what can be told from her nightmares she has escaped a horrible place. From there this story took me on a journey that was full of questions and mystery. It had my imagination running wild on just what was going on. I found myself getting emotional when reading this book. I was angry with how Alanna has been treated and sad on how alone she felt. Alanna shows herself to be a strong person to have survived all that she has. Alanna is also someone who sticks up for others. If she feels like others have been mistreated in some way she wants to step in and assist them. This is one of the reasons that I love her character so much. I liked that there is information given about the species, the talnarins. As she is traveling Alanna interacts with other characters. Some of them are willing to help her. Most are not. There are also characters that have their own agenda. This story is one that hooks you in and keeps you reading to find out what happens next. This is the first book I have read by the author and the first book in a series. It does end in a cliffhanger. I can’t wait to read the next part of the series. This book would be recommended for those 16 years of age or older due to language, dark themes, and violence.
I love the cover for this book and the story is just as enthralling and enchanting. It is a very well put together and cleverly woven fantasy story In which the character is almost as clueless as we, the reader, are which makes for a fantastic journey of discovery and adventure.
The world building is very well done and the book is written down in the first person of the main character. I love how her thought process is written so openly and honestly and how she thinks of every possible bad scenario in her head before realising that things may be a bit different.
The main character has been through alot and more is revealed as the story progresses. This book shows the making of a heroine.
It ends on a cliffhanger which makes me excited as there is more books to the story and I'm very interested to see where it goes and what decisions Alanna makes in the future. I highly recommend this book for any fantasy genre fan and would recommend keeping an eye for anything else by this author as it written wonderfully from start to finish.
Fractured Past has a true meaning to Alanna's life. She went through a lot in her past but I like how that doesn't stop her it has only made her stronger. I like how the author doesn't brake the Him through the whole book, it makes things mysterious. The author's strong points are the details in the flashbacks Alanna has when something in her present life triggers them. I love how her past life isn't revealed all at once it's given in pieces. The book ends on an intense note which is really cool. Alanna isn't going to stop until she makes sure everyone is safe. But you have to read the second book to find out.
Fractured Past (A Talnarin Novel Book ) by D.E. Chapman will keep you engaged until the last page. This is my first book by this author and I enjoyed her writing style and her creativity for details. This story is a little bit different then I normally read. There is a lot of flashbacks that I normally find hard to read and keep up with. This author did a great job of keeping up with the flow of things. I found it easy to keep up with the flow. This story pretty much flows around the main character, Alanna. She is a character that just isn't sure who she is or what she is. She now has a power that she can't control and is out for revenge against those that did this to her. She needs to prove that she has done nothing wrong before it is too late. Is she safe or is she more of a threat then she realized? She is a strong character that has a lot of fight in her. She has a lot of determination and that is what makes her a great character for this story. This story will take you on an adventure into a fantasy world that will feel very real to you. It will make you question what is real and what is fantasy. This story is full of mystery and action that will hook you and make you want to know what is going to happen. I highly recommend this story as I know you will want to see what happens to Alanna and if she will survive.
Fractured Past is book one in the Talnarin Novel series. This is my first book by this author and I have to say it really pulled me in. It captured my attention from the very beginning and held it till the very last word. I loved how the story flowed, there were a lot of flashbacks but they flowed right with the story line, they didn’t seem out of place. I normally have a hard time jumping back and forth from past to present but with this story I had no problem keeping up. In this story wee follow Allanna. She is confused about who she is and what she is; she has powers that she can’t control. She is a strong character, she is very determined, and has a lot of fight. If you love a story full of mystery and action then this one is for you!
Fractured Past, by D.E. Chapman, is the first in the Talnarin Novel series. This is a paranormal/fantasy themed story in the new adult/college genre. D.E. Chapman is a new author in my library and the story line immediately captured my interest. The author delves right in from the start within this book bringing us to how Allana came to where she presently is and then digging into the struggles that Allana is encountering. Highly descriptive and beyond imaginative, the author has created an elaborate fantasy dimension and unique characters. A journey is on the horizon and as we embark on this trip we encounter a mix of characters, some friendly, others not so much. I will warn that this does end with a cliffhanger, so be prepared.
I found this book difficult to get into at first. However, I have this OCD need to finish books I start. I am a reader who likes a lot of dialog and movement. The first part of this story centers around the main character and much of the story is told through flashbacks. There were a few passages I had to read twice in order to understand the story better and to make sure I knew which parts were current and which parts were flashbacks. It made it hard to connect and empathize with her her. However, once I got into this story, I discovered a world with richly developed characters and a quickly paced adventure. As a fantasy reader, world-building is very important to me and this author does a thorough job convincing me this world really exists. It was also nice to see a story that branched into other areas of fantasy instead of relying on traditional tropes of vampires, shifters, wizards, and witches. I think the author did a good job touching on various moral issues without being overly preachy and hitting the reader over the head with own thoughts and opinions. Overall, there will be readers who will appreciate the high fantasy world the author created and will enjoy the whole series. However, I do think this might be one of those series where it would be better to wait until all the books are out and then read them all at one time.
Fractured Past is book one of A Talnarin Series by D.E. Chapman. This is the first book I have read by Ms. Chapman and I really enjoyed it. It isn't in my normal genre but it held my attention throughout from the first page to the last. Ms. Chapman did a wonderful job with the character descriptions, Alanna is such a strong person. The world of the Talnarins was brought to life and it was like I was right there with Alanna. The journey Alanna takes is one of hardship, self discovery and packed with action. This book does end in a cliffhanger, which has me waiting for the second book in the series.

I love fantasy novels and this one doesn't disappoint. I really enjoyed this novel. The way Chapmen writes and especially begins the novel is fantastic. The open immediately pulls you into the story and it is so intense you can't help but to keep turning the pages in the hopes that all the questions in your head will be answered. From the very first sentence Chapman pulls at your emotions and you by the time you find a place to stop and retreat back to reality you are already half way through the book. Can't wait for the next one!
Fractured Past (A Talnarin Novel Series Book 1) by D.E. Chapman
4 out of 5 stars
This story end in a cliffhanger.
Fractured Past is Ms. Chapman’s debut novel. It’s a High fantasy that I was fascinated by the synopsis and the cover of this novel is stunning! The characters were unusual but well developed. The story was also unusual I was lost and confused in the beginning but the storyline was well developed.
We have Alanna and after some experiments, she’s cursed with a power she can’t control. Now, Alanna seeks out the very species that ruined her life; the talnarins. These creatures are capable of doing things no human can do, but she’s desperate for their help.
Alanna now finds herself in an unknown world, her very existence a threat. Now she needs to prove her innocence or she stands to lose her entire life’s purpose…revenge. This is an unusual story that I have enjoyed reading and I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series. BY Tracy
Fractured Past is book one in the Talnarin Novel Series written by D.E. Chapman. Alanna is the main character and shes had a very tough life. Now she has to figure out what she is and how to control her newfound powers. The story is told in Alannas point of view and throughout the story you get flashbacks of memories she tries to forget. Now shes risking everything to return to the one place she would rather die then return to, and she may very well die. Alanna is a strong character and though she goes through a lot she knows what needs to be done in order to survive and even though shes terrified of the outcome she goes for it. But will she survive to reach her ultimate goal? The storyline is strong and steady. I would suggest this storyline for 16+ due to strong language.
Fractured Past by D.E. Chapman is book one in the Talnarin Series. I had a very hard time getting into this book. But once I got past the first 40% of the book I really started enjoying it. The beginning isn't horrible but the main character’s flash back/ dreams are repetitive and come out of nowhere. I completely understand how she feels though because that is exactly how panic attacks and night terrors are. I'm glad I stuck with this novel because the story is very interesting! I loved this new take on fantasy. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
Dive into a fantasy world!!! Alanna has stepped outside the borders of her life, looking for adventure. Travel along with her on her journey, at times unnerving but, the story pulls you in. You are gripped by it, I read the book in one day. It is like looking at a globe into another world. The closer you get the more you want to know, dare you read more, cannot put the book down, I was so sorry when I got to the end, waiting for more. I am so looking forward to book 2. Captivating read, would recommend strongly.
Fractured Past is D. E. Chapman’s debut novel. High fantasy is not normally a genre I read, but I was fascinated by the synopsis and the cover of this novel is stunning!
The novel begins where Alanna has found herself in an unfortunate situation where she is on the run from Them. They and Them–as referred to in the book–are the Talnarin’s. They are a species with pigmented eyes and pointy ears. A different color eye pigment refers to a different strength you may have. There are four different strengths (that are written about historically), plus a golden one, which is a specialized one, and then … Alanna–a different eye color and species all together.
As a reader, you learn that there are five species in the world. Humans and Talnarin’s are only two. Alanna is the beginning of a sixth species–the premise of the series. Chapman has created this incredible world where there are different ranks and villages that seem rather far and deserted from each other. For example, her human village is quite different from another human village she comes across. And there are certain things that she is unfamiliar with, like, a library or knowing what a collar is. So while there are different levels of life for human’s, the same goes for Talnarin’s. While Alanna is on the run from a specific Talnarin, she has to learn that not all of them are evil. Some do not have the motive to kill her.
While there is this fascinating world to wrap your head around, the first third of the book consists of flashbacks and Alanna’s own inner thoughts. As a reader who enjoys dialogue, it was hard for me to get hooked into the book with Alanna’s only interactions with herself. In that, I found it hard to connect with Alanna. I knew while reading that I should like Alanna and sympathize with the lifestyle she is leading, but I didn’t feel I knew anything about her. While I didn’t need to know her heartbreaking story that got her to this point (yet), I didn’t really know her personality or quirks. While essentially I understand these could have been destroyed with everything she’s suffered, I couldn’t find direction with her until about a hundred pages in. That was when I really wanted to know more about her and where the story was going to lead. This is when the story begins to pick up with interactions with others and a new village, but there could have been more development in the beginning.
After I got past the first hundred pages, I spent the rest of the day reading the book and flying through it. There was far more development of character on Alanna’s side, but other Talnarin’s as well. And the world developed far more–which makes sense considering this is just the first book of the series.
Warning to reads who hate cliffhangers: I suggest holding off on this novel until Chapman releases the second book because it is a great cliffhanger! But if you’re someone who likes the suspense, I suggest picking up it up and diving into a world with the Talnarin’s! While it wasn’t always my cup of tea, I’m certain there are a ton of readers out there who would love this world that Chapman created!
"Fractured Past" is an epic dark fantasy that captivates from the front page. With a strong lead character, and a powerfully engaging plot, this book by new author D.E. Chapman is truly a stand out book. Being the first installment in "A Talnarin Novel Series" readers won't have to wait long for the next installment which is nearly available.
The front cover captures the book "Fractured Past" perfectly. With a title that is the focus of the plot, a beautiful illustration of a tree in autumn leaves with an arch for the journey, to a quote that is both alluring and the main element of the story, the cover really is exceptional. A fantasy that sees a young woman Alana, who after leaving the safety of her village is captured and experimented on. As a result her look is transformed and she is given powers she has no idea how to use. The only clue to what has happened to her coming through in glances of memories of her "Fractured Past". With the will to survive, get answers on what she has become and seek revenge on the person who has done this to her, Alana is forced into a new way of life. Follow her trials in her new world, as Alana has to fight for life, in a journey fraught with many twist and turns.
"Fractured Past" by D.E. Chapman stands out as a 5-star read in the genre for many reasons listed below: *Full of description and attention to detail making the lead character become familiar and evoking a shared interest in her pursuit for survival and justice The portrayal of Alana as vulnerable and fragile makes her character more realistic. *A plot that is action packed with many twists and turns keeping the story moving forward. *In an easy to read format that allows a seamless read *The narrative is original and exceptional with each chapter depicting both Alana moving forward in her journey, but also showing glimpses to her "Fractured Past". *The book is long in length allowing readers to be fully immersed over a number of sittings. Also the easy to read format allows a seamless read.
I recommend "Fractured Past" by D.E. Chapman for all lovers of fantasy of a mature age (due to notes from the author about some of the darker elements). I also recommend that this book be read in order, and not as a standalone for readers to fully understand the plot. I can't wait to read the second installment in this series.
