Аскольд Акишин - один из пионеров российского комикса, участник легендарной московской студии "КОМ". Его рисованные истории вбирают практически все жанры комикса: исторический, военный, приключенческий, детский, сверхгероический, документальный, хоррор, детектив, андерграунд. Он работал над адаптациями Булгакова, Лавкрафта, Брэдбери. Его произведения издаются в России и за рубежом.

This short comic by Askold Akishin is an understated, surreal pastiche of life in the Soviet Union. It’s similar in premise to Bulgakov’s brilliant Master and Margarita, in that it uses supernatural devices to highlight the absurdities of Soviet society. In terms of execution, however, this comic is quite unlike anything else. The narrative is surreal and enigmatic to the point of being dreamlike, its strange sequence of events tumbling by with little explanation. Many of the panels are wordless, while others contain snippets of banal conversation, and some include an omniscient narrator commenting on events. Although it’s hard to call this work a comedy, it's imbued with a kind of subtle, dark humour – and a couple of moments made me laugh out loud. The whole thing is held together by its wonderfully expressive black-and-white art, and Akishin's knack for capturing the feel of provincial Soviet Kazakhstan. Overall, I enjoyed this very much, and next time I'm in Russia I'll definitely try to pick up some more of Akashin's work.
