But James, who combined rare qualities of aloofness and participation, of detachment and alert curiosity, was a man upon whom few experiences and observations were lost. After a restless transatlantic childhood and a brief residence in France, James settled in England, where he became one of the most traveled and sociable writers of his time. از هنری جیمز تا الان فقط هیولایی در جنگل رو خوندم که متن پیچیده و عجیبی بود. این کتاب هم در مورد زندگی شخصی جیمز نوشته شده بود و کمتر راجب نوع فکر و آثارش مطلب داشت. خیلی کلی بود و بیشتر منو یاد مستندهای قدیمی نویسندگان بزرگ که یه زمانی شبکه چهار پخش می کرد انداخت. دقیقا صدای، صدا پیشه مستند تو گوشم بود وقتی داشتم متنو می خوندم:))

Henry James certainly traveled a lot! (He accomplished his Grand European Tour before he even reached 18.) After reading this I figured Edith Wharton to be a very kind friend of James' — transferring her $8,000 advance to a financially unstable James without his knowledge has left its impression on me.

The photographs in this book were cool to look at. I liked the pictures and etchings of Dutchess County.

Rather awkwardly written (I had to read one sentence 3 times, and I'm still not sure what it meant), this is a quick overview of James' life, filled with interesting photos and paintings. Moore has nothing very deep to say about James' writing, but gives good overviews of his best-known novels and short stories.

هِنری با خانواده خود به اروپا سفر کرد، پنج سال را در ژنو و انگلستان و پاریس گذراند، در ۱۸۶۰ در نیوانگلند مستقر شد و در طی جنگ‌های داخلی، در آنجا به سر برد. نقصی در ستون فقرات موجب شد که هنری از شرکت در جنگ معاف گردد، این پیشامد به او آن احساس را داد که در صحنه زندگی بیگانه و بی‌کاره است و سرنوشت او را تنها برای مشاهدهٔ تلاش و کوشش دیگران آفریده. کم‌کم معتقد شد که همین تقدیر به او رسالت داده است تا مشاهدات خود را به دیگران منتقل کند و این کار تنها از راه هنر امکان‌پذیر است، پس جیمز به هنر نقاشی روی آورد، اما چیزی نگذشت که استعداد واقعی خود را کشف کرد و به راه نویسندگی افتاد و کار ادبی را با انتشار مقاله‌های انتقادی و قصه‌ها و داستان‌های کوتاه در روزنامه‌ها و مجله‌ها آغاز کرد.
