“You do realize historically what has happened to those who can potentially save mankind? Ever hear of Jesus Christ? It’s not like he got a warm welcome.”
Alex is a senior in high school. Shes a smart girl working her way towards becoming the valedictorian and going to Duke. Her dad is a scientist and is always working on something new and groundbreaking. Everyone in town is anxious due to the news reports of people contracting a virus that makes humans have super strength and turn into cannibals. The virus is starting to spread world wide. What she doesn't know, is that her father may be doing more than just looking through a microscope in his lab at home.
The virus finally hits her town, and Alex's father is called in to work to help come up with a cure. He leaves Alex and her mom at home and tells them to stay home- unless he is gone longer than 2 weeks. If he isn't back, he wants them to leave and he gives Alex a package to hold on to with instructions to find her sister June who is working at a lab in Georgia.
2 weeks have passed and the world is in complete chaos. Alex and her mom set off on a journey to find her sister. Neither are sure they are ready but time is up and its time to find out if they have what it takes to make it through the Death Fields.
That was just the synopsis of book 1. I read books 1-3 so far and enjoyed them. Each book built upon each other and kept getting better and better with each installment. The writing was simple and easy to follow. Characters were likable and I loved the dystopian feel of it all.
This is a survival book with plenty of action and conflict. There is a little bit of romance but not that much. In fact, its just starting to take root by the end of book 3. As far as the gore- its not bad and not scary. It reminds me a lot of any type of dystopian- concentrating mainly on the characters and their survival. I would recommend it!
Positives: good storyline for a standard zombie apocalypse story, strong and interesting characters, good fast pace, lots of turns of events that keep it interesting, you are always hooked and want to know what happens next. Also, it is now a week later and I am still thinking about this series and the characters, so that is a good sign, as they have clearly left a mark.
Negatives: the first book is strong, but each one gets weaker. The books get shorter, too short for my liking, the storylines get a bit samey (fight, switch sides, fight, etc.) and OH MY GOD the editing errors!!! Hardly any errors in the first book, some in the second, and by the third one I was close to throwing it out the window. You have the usual typos that could be overlooked, but you also have such blatant writing errors, it really interrupted my joy of reading. Here are only two of MANY, MANY examples: 1. Him and her alone... "He catches her eye and holds my gaze" (Who is the storyteller here!?), 2. when climbing over a fence... "My shirt snags on the back of my knee" (is she wearing a shirt as trousers?)
So, as much as I liked the first book, by the third it just seems as if the author was rushing to get a book out without paying much attention to detail, which doesn't bode well for the rest of the series. I therefore won't be reading the others.
I read previous reviews about the series and I was hesitant about starting this series.. I am glad I took a chance on it, and I have to put in that I disagree with some of the reviews saying Alex is pretty much helpless and constantly needs saving. Yes, multiple characters save her life in the series so far. But for me she is a regular 18 year old girl who by her on admission is not that active before the apocalypse. For her to travel as far as she did, face the hardships she had too and to be able to slice off the infected heads is no small feat! so what if other character's have had to rescue her. Seriously, some parts in the book had me lagitamely scared! Like I had to stop reading at night cause I was psyching myself out. The author had me close to tears in some parts and on the edge of my seat for others! I liked the series and I am excited to read books 4-6 to see how this series ends. I would recommend this series!
This box set includes the first three books in The Death Fields series and I was immediately sucked into this story and spend every spare moment reading it until I was finished. The first book goes back and forth in time and it was very skillfully done, with quick chapters.
I love the heroine, and throughout the books I kept imagining just what I would do in her shoes (let's be honest, I would die in this scenario for sure!) and how other people in my life would react as well. The series is exciting, fast-paced and has very interesting and complex characters.
There are some editing errors, and I am reader that sees every one and is jolted from the story by them, but I truly believe most readers would not be, and honestly, the story and characters are so good that it doesn't even matter. A must read if you like strong heroines, and dystopian/post-apocalyptic stories.
Incredible dystopian story. Lots of editing errors that occasionally required flipping back a page or so to figure out. The world ends because a virus, created to eliminate a threatening middle eastern sect, gets loose and nearly destroys humanity. Competing factions, some within families, battle to control what little is left. Three more books in the story. Who will win? The Resistance, the Military, the Scientists that loosed the virus, or someone else?
3 books were read very quickly as they were gripping!
This mini series is a good description of how normality can change rapidly. One day Alex is looking forward to going to Duke a prestigious college, the next day she is fleeing villains (cannot reveal who - spoilers), the US Armed forces and humans who whilst not zombies are human flesh eaters who infect those that they do not finish eating.....
A vivid description of how a whole civilized world can crumblenin a matter of months.
I really enjoyed this book. It was pretty realistic in the way that it was told. The characters stayed true to themselves, almost the whole time. Only a couple times, did the author mess up. There were a few errors in grammar, here and there, but wasn't enough to mess up the storyline. I liked the way that the story was told. I also liked that it wasn't to graphic. I'd recommend this book to anyone who liked apocalyptic stories.
The Death Fields:A Post-Apocalyptic Thriller Books 1-3
This was a fantastic book or I should say books. It had a lot of ins and outs. You were not sure where it was going next. I really did not like how she had to kill someone she loved to find out her father got his secretary out of the trouble when it started. Want to know how the book goes next.
What a fantastic series. It is so good. What Alex has to go through. So much going on. The end of book 3 has me screaming. Cole turned even though he knows about everything going on. Guess I'm just super disappointed. I liked him but I must say Alex needs to be with Wyatt they are the better fit. Happy she got away. Cannot wait to read more to see how everything turns out.

I really like the way this story was told. The writing is crisp and direct. The characters are well defined and believable. If you like end of the world stories this one is a combination of the good ones.
Very good story of a experiment that goes bad and kills most of the worlds people. Lots of excitement along the way as we try to figure out who is good and who is evil, add little romance in and you have a lot to look forward to.
So this is a definite favorite now. Actionpacked, not far too unlikely and easy to read. There is so much happening in these books and they are so engaging, it's really fun to read - even with the human drama!
Zombies apocalypse anyone? Same story. Different characters. I did like the characters. And the main antagonist was an interesting character and had an interesting angle on the whole ordeal. Didn’t focus on her though. Lots of killing of zombies. But not a bad series.
Absolutely great apocalypse. Had.me.from page one. Wonderful characters and strong willed Can't wait to start the other set. The characters have step g values
An incredibly entertaining, action packed and interesting read, I thoroughly enjoyed these books. There were a number of errors within the text, however, this did not detract from the story. I am looking forward to reading more books in this series.
I love finding a new series! And then having a love hate relationship with some of the characters! Great new series, can't wait to see how this story continues.
These three books are amazing. I finished all three in 2 days. I was hooked. I love all the characters, even the villains. It’s that “god I hate you, but because I hate you I love you” love. It was written well, the odd grammar, or misplaced word but it doesn’t really bother me. The only things I’d say I didn’t like was that there was no “down time”. Or if there was it was glipped over super fast I.e “months later...” but then she’d say it was only a few days/weeks later in the next paragraph so a tad confusing. The second thing was Alex is told she’s a good fighter etc but you never really get that because she’s always being saved. There’s another apocalyptic series - “until the end of the world” - and the main character is a good fighter, as well as brave, but you read that S well. She’ll have scenes where she’s super kick ass and saving her friends, and then other times she’ll be kicking us but need help, so it rounded it out. I think every time I can actually remember Alex fighting the eaters she either froze, was saved by a guy, or she had to run while someone else fought off the eaters. That doesn’t make her kick ass or good. That makes her a liability essentially someone you’d hate to have around because you’d never truely be able to depend on her to help you out of a situation.
