The third volume begins and continues to be very Illyana Rasputin (Magik) - centric as a soulless version of her comes back to Earth and joins the reformed and nearly totally rebuilt original New Mutants team. The big stories are Illyana's secrets & lies, 'Return of Legion', 'Second Coming' and the very very good 'Fall & Rise' of the New Mutants. Zeb Wells very quickly becomes one of my all-time fave New Mutants' scribes - 8 out of 12 ...'cos just when you thought you were out, they pull you back in!

The New Mutants are essentially the team for the younger members of the X-Men. Led by Sam Guthrie, Cannonball, the New Mutants are a team I knew of but was not very familiar with.

This new version introduces the team and their first mission is to take on the omega-level mutant known as Legion. The story then shifts to an evil computer virus-like infection that must be fiught by Warlock and the New Mutants. The final part of this volume's story is Ilyana taking the team into Limbo to fight against a rogue military unit that wishes to destroy all demons (and possibly all reality with it).

That's the gist of it. Pretty good stories. The artwork is also good. I don't know much about the New Mutants so I didn't care about most of the character's inter-personal drama. But I did enjoy the volume and will need to hunt down the original series, as well as keep an eye out for volume two of this series.

Zeb Wells is one of my favorite Marvel writers in the last few years. He wrote some damn good Carnage stories, excellent Daredevil story about his father, he's currently writing Hellions which is amazing, so yeah, I was excited to try this out.

So I was a little let down I didn't love this.

I mean there's some great parts. When Doug returns and does unspeakable things to the team, it is amazing. Some of the banter is really well done for people of this age. The fights can be a lot of fun too and well drawn (except 1 or 2 issues were ugly as sin)

But yeah it felt more average X-Men storylines than I expected. Same anti-mutant military unit. Same one character on the team has evil or different motivations. The return of fucking Legion again. So yeah it felt a little safe for me.

Saying that was still a fun read just nothing special.

So, this collection is extremely uneven...

The first half, looks great, and has an awesome story. Then it transitions to horrible art, then just ok art, and the second half is dumb.

I really like Magik, she’s such a cool, underutilized character. That’s why I asked for this as a Christmas gift. But she doesn’t even shine in 1/4 of this collection.

First half, if you enjoy Illyana, you’ll love it. The second half, don’t bother.

Good relationships between characters, good drama, funny moments, some good violent action, great horror elements (borderline-torture porn, body horror, and even Lovecraftian), nice blend of different genres and great art for the most part. Lots of sentimental fanservice as well, done well. Interesting concepts. Fantastic Necrosha tie-ins, Doug is the best as always. Would be 5 stars if not for the one Dani-solo issue dealing with the aftermath of Utopia and Hela/Aasgard stuff that kinda didn't fit the rest of the series and dragged it down.

I would not recommend this run for fans of the New Mutants or anyone wanting to meet them alike. I am an avid reader of Marvel and DC Comics for every decade and it is rare for me to not enjoy a graphic novel they put out. As someone who really loved every New Mutant series leading up to this, I was shocked by how completely off the rails this one went. I assumed the whole time that Wells had never read a New Mutants book before this, but shockingly in the interview at the end, he says he grew up on them.

This book has the most uncharacteristic version of the New Mutants, by a long shot. Witness Roberto lose all of his character development and personality to be reduced to someone who teasingly sexually harasses his team members. Read on as every woman member gets sadistically beaten and tortured and yes exclusively them! We see some art that is great in this book, but a lot of odd skin lightening to the point he looks white of Roberto (the character whose first arc in comics was being racially persecuted for his dark skin in Brazil).
This book continues with the worst written scenes I've ever read of Emma Frost. All coming back to how much they brush over members like Karma, but somehow make Cannonball dislikable as a team leader.

Lots of The New Mutants are forced to retaliate against the violent and sadistic foes of this book and in the end become outdated and edgy versions of themselves. I'm shocked to see so many people praise this book on Amazon, given how when New Mutants went edgy in the 90s as X-Force it was way better and deeper than this! Which to some is a low bar.

This book's interviews in the back are the best part! Lots of great bonus content with interviews with Wells and original creators Claremont and McLeod. The Wells interviews all claim that this book is a return to form and bringing back the New Mutants for everything you want; I would say that is the furthest thing from the truth.

I bought this collection for the character Illyana Rasputin aka Magik and got even more delight in return. Although Illyana might not be a likable character in terms of personality, her personal situation is sympathetic and reminded me that of DC Comics' Raven (another magic superhero character I love). Of course, Illyana having an awesome sword, magical demon powers, and armor was really cool. I loved how this collection displayed her abilities.

Besides Illyana, I was delightfully surprised to find myself becoming fond of the characters Dani Moonstar, X'ian Coy Manh (aka Shan aka Karma), and the alien robot Warlock. Out of all these characters, Dani was especially amazing. I loved how well she could fight even while depowered and how she had a single issue all to her self where she became a Valkyrie for Hela, the goddess of Death.

Meanwhile, the storylines were really engaging, especially since they allowed the characters to shine well. Legion was an interesting adversary in the first part of the comic, while the mind controlled zombie-dead mutants were slighty less so. However, the military generals from Hell were just as compelling as Legion (though there is an unresolved plot point at the end of the book).

Finally, most of the artwork was stunning, with the only low point being around issue 5 when the art changes to weird color-pencil drawings that look realistic and cartoonish at the same time. I didn't see why the art had to change to look like that, but it was definitely jarring.

Overall, I loved this book. I've read it twice already & never got bored or too confused. It was worth getting it ridiculously cheap. Not only was I able to get into more of Illyana Rasputin's character, I also found a new young adult superhero team to appreciate.

When I was seeking out books to read that might be related to what I'd come to love on the FX show Legion, this was nowhere on any lists. I'd never heard of Zeb Wells and had no expectations for this, but it was by far the most solid, enjoyable New Mutants series I'd read up to this point.

It happens to also be the first time I've seen the Legion/David Haller character actually on the page and explored within his vast clusterfuck of a mind.

Usually in a collection this large, there are going to be a few story arcs that are total snoozers, but I can't recall any portion of this book that wasn't on point. If I had to pick, my favorites were the issues focusing on Cypher and Warlock (characters I'd never known about before, but who have both been around since 1984).

The only character from the original Chris Claremont New Mutants team who is nowhere to be seen here is Rahne. I found it odd that she wasn't even mentioned until reading all the bonus interview material, where Wells explains that her character was already too busy on other teams at the time.

The art is solid, characters of color are more true to their original design (advanced in age, but not as whitewashed as some runs between their origins and now).

Highly recommended for fans of the mutant side of the Marvel universe.

Pretty damn good! This collection meanders between Necrosha and Second Coming, serving as (pretty decent) supplemental material... BUT it really shines in the last seven issues with a big, explosive arc involving...

You guessed it. ILYANA DOING DEVIL SHIT IN LIMBO!!!!

It’s been done. And redone. And done again. Ilyana stories that lean on the classic Inferno arc are a dime a dozen. But, this one is still pretty fucking great, so I’ll let it slide one more time.

The art is magnificent throughout this whole book.

The plot gets a bit confusing and jumbled, and I’m sure I missed some things, but overall, I still really enjoyed these characters and their unfolding drama. In many ways, I felt like I was taking a trip back to Claremont era New Mutants.

This is a return to form for this team, which languished through a very disappointing reboot only a few years prior. I recommend this title to anyone who likes the New Mutants, or just people who like epic, explosive action stories.

I just got back into comic reading these few years. And my buddy recommend this book for me to enjoy some new mutants read. I'm glad that i bought this. Better late than never, right? Storyline and artwork is really well made. Love the issues drawn by Dio Neves. Stunningly beautiful! I enjoyed it so much. But the artwork on a few issues in the middle really turn me off. It's like really bad and funny drawn. I can't even read it in a serious mode. Luckily it was just a few issues.

Magik, Amara and Cannonball really outshine in this. They fought with their power really good! Love to see them in action! It added to my knowledge of this team after I read New X-Men: The Quest For Magik few years ago. It helps a lot for the continuity. What an action packed graphic novel with almost 500 pages, this is a satisfying to read. A great collection for the young generations to get to know this team trained by the Prof X.

I grew up on the original New Mutants. This reboot by Zeb Wells is truly amazing. It takes the best of the original group (minus Wolfsbane) and adds real personality and grit. This is a more mature and intricate series of stories. Legion, Doug Ramsey, Warlock (unfortunately) all come back in inventive and innovative ways. The cherry on the cake is the Marvel Spotlight section at the back- it revisits the best of the ‘old’ New Mutants and includes a feat Chris Claremont interview...who knew he planned to kill of Karma after a few issues. A real gem of a book

I love the dynamics between the New Mutants and Zeb Wells knows how to handle a team book pretty well. The artwork by Dio Neves is stellar. The only thing this book suffers from is all the Marvel event tie-ins.

Most of the character interaction and voices are great and feels very New Mutants, but also has some weird choices like how sexual violence against women is alluded to, or introducing romance between characters that doesn't make sense for them.

Great run by Zeb but it got muddled down in the middle due to crossovers.

A nice, bulky collection, spoilt only by the fact that Marvel really loves a cross-over.

relatively inoffensive, and innocuous. Dani does seem to feel pretty free to smack Sam around. Art holds up.

"Yes. Your little Snowflake..."

My first attempt at a New Mutants run, I love the X-men but never got into the original teenage squad. This one reunites Dani Moonstar, Cannonball, Prodigy, Illyana Rasputin and a few others. The book is typical superhero affair and one that constantly gets pulled in wider editorial directions (i.e. X-men Second Coming, Necrosha, etc.) Yet, it's a mindless distraction nonetheless. Will continue with the next part of the run written by Abnett and Lanning.
