Once a cowboy, always a cowboy

Ten years ago, Jack Everett left his family's ranch without a backward glance. Now, what was supposed to be a quick trip home for his father's funeral has suddenly become more complicated. The ranch Jack can handle—he might be a lawyer, but he still remembers how to work with his hands. But turning around the failing vineyard he's also inherited? That requires working with the one woman he never expected to see again.

Ava Ellis broke her own heart the night she let Jack go. She was young and scared—and secretly pregnant with Jack's baby. Now that he's back and asking for her help, Ava sees her opportunity to right the wrongs of the past. But how will he feel about the son he's never known? Jack Everett left his family’s ranch home ten years ago and never looked back, leaving his two younger brothers in the care of his aunt who rescued all of them from an abusive alcoholic father. Now he’s returning for his father’s funeral and finding himself very disconnected from his brothers. He has a per chance encounter with Ava Ellis, the girl-now-woman who was his first and only love who shattered his young heart, and learns he has a nine-year old son, Owen. His plan for a fast getaway back to his life now needs some adjustments.

Jack and Ava have a complicated history and I struggled with her decision to not tell him about their son for so long and for him to have essentially abandoned his family emotionally during that time. They had very good reasons for their initial decisions; it’s just the length of elapsed time that made no sense to me. However, I really enjoyed how these two communicated with each other and the way their new relationship evolved. Owen was a great kid and made the story so much more enjoyable.

Jack had a bit more angst than I preferred, to the point where it became tiresome. However, the secondary relationships added a lot of layers to the story, harbingers of stories to come. Those characters had a lot of “meat on the bones” and I like how the story ended, not necessarily cleanly and neatly but nicely and realistically. I will definitely be continuing the series. 3.5 stars

Ava Ellis has never gotten over Jack. She let him go 10 years ago when he was setting his sights on a career as a lawyer. But now he’s back for his father’s funeral and he’s thinking of her too.

Its all about second chances. A chance encounter, a connection that cannot be denied and a love that never could be forgotten.

Pine perfectly struck that emotional cord, invested her readers and took us into the hearts of her characters. 5*

I received this ARC copy of Second Chance Cowboy from Forever - Grand Central Publishing. This is my honest and voluntary review. Second Chance Cowboy is set for publication Feb. 27, 2018.

Second chance romance and secret baby 🫶🫶🫶

I think I shall read the whole series!!

Also Ava's dad drove me bonkers, he went beyond the line. I get being protective of the people you love but DAMN chill a bit, man. Glad she called him out!

3 Jack and Ava Stars

Enjoyable read which is a second chance romance / secret baby trope.
Jack and Ava were teenage sweethearts. Ava was from an established, loving family but Jack is from a very broken home and he often takes the brutal beatings that his alcohol dependent dad dishes out in order to protect his two younger brothers, Luke and Walker. Some traumatic events happen and a separation of nearly ten years ensues until Jack has to return and discovers he has a son her never knew about.

I sometimes struggle a little with the whole secret baby issue when it's years that have passed. Ava had tried to tell him and her reasons for not telling him were plausible initially but I still felt a bit uncomfortable with her not making more attempts after some time had elapsed.

I am interested to read other books in the series but I would not re read this one, hence 3 stars.

HEA? More HFN but I'm sure they will be in future books about other couple's.
Cheating? No. They both see others during the separation.

Great romance. Perfectly angsty second chance story with a few twists along the way. Third person point of view writing that keeps you engaged from beginning to end with charming characters and a zany family to go along with them.

This is an awesome second-chance story, ten years of loss and heartache not only for two estranged high-school lovers, who never stopped loving each other, but also of a family mentally and physically scarred by years of abuse. A small tow romance that is steamy, emotional as well as funny. Loved the chemistry between Jack and Ava. They made an awesome pair. I may not concur with some of things they did or the decisions they'd taken, but never did I feel anger or dislike toward them. I also loved all the other characters Jack and Ava's son, Owen, his adorable dog Scully, Jack's younger brothers --Luke and Walker-- and their young aunt, Jenna --who is only eight years older to Jack-- and even Ava's parents, even though, her father was constantly harsh to Jack.

The Everett brothers may be a messed-up lot, but they sure know how to throw out the welcome mat to all those whom they care for and exude so much fun with their non-stop banter and ribbing -- although I personally felt they went a bit overboard with the profanities. I loved their relationship with their young aunt, how caring she was toward them and how protective they were to her, and I found it amusing how their antennas would be on high alert whenever they got to know she was dating and wanted to know everything about the guy.

I also loved Ava's 'mom' moments especially when she sees Owen on the horse or when he goes to the rodeo. Being a worrier mom myself, I could totally relate to it.

Gist of the story --this part contains spoilers

Emotions ran high in the book and there was depth in every character and every relationship and the reader is kept hooked right through. Loved Jack's proposal in the end. Scully's eager reply had me chuckling loud. Overall, it was an enjoyable read.

The end of the book had a sneak peek of the start of the next book in the series that's Luke and Lily Green's story --she's the part owner of the diner in this book along with her husband who is Luke's best friend, but is divorced in the second book-- and found it amusing. Looking forward to reading it.

Loved this one. It's a great way to start a new series because now I'm completely hooked! Jack and Eva's story is a fantastic second chance story and Owen is such a cute kid. Can't wait for Walker and Luke's stories. I highly recommend this one.

Jack Everett hasn't lead an easy life. He lost his mother when he was not yet a teenager, his father became a violent drunk and Jack endured his father's beatings so he and his brothers wouldn't be separated nor in the foster system. At least, his young aunt in her early twenties was there to take care of them. Being the new kid is never easy, but it's worse when you arrive in town and everyone heard your father tried to kill you before. If only his arrival in Oak Bluff could have been a fresh start... But a young heart and eager fists to defend his girl got him in trouble and he decided to go away.

Ava Ellis had a news that could have keep Jack in Oak Bluff. But she thought he needed something else, that for him be happy; he had to leave this rough life. And something he said to her made her reconsidered telling him she was pregnant with his baby. The second time she tried telling him the truth, he was still about to start a new life and she thought the same.

Ten years later, Jack is back in Oak Bluff, for his father's funeral. Although he helped them financially and they saw each other a couple of times during the last decade, the reunion with his brothers isn't going so well, especially with the youngest. But Jack is not there to stay anyway. His lawyer firm have other plans for him in New York. But the Everett brothers just learned that their father also owned a small vineyard and left them three equal shares in the ranch. That's not the only surprise waiting for our hero. How will he react to the news that the girl who broke his heart years ago hided from him he have a son ? There's so much history between them and he also need her expertise with the vineyard. They acknowledge the attraction but both agree it's best for their kid to not act on it. Ava also have plans about her future and Jack will be going away again soon. How to protect herself from a broken heart and do what's best for her son ?

Having read book #1.5 and #2 in the series before this one, I already knew a couple of things that happened to the hero. It made me worry because of the whole "father trying to kill his son" thing, but while it's a tragic thing, the author didn't went with the showing route and making this overwhelming for the readers. And the fact it was told right from the start helped to not make it too heavy. There was also the fact I'm not a fan of the secret baby trope that had me wary, but even if I think it's not okay for the heroine to kept him from the truth and that her reasons for doing so weren't good enough for me, I was able to sympathized with her. But I think she should have defended the hero to her family's way earlier.

While it was a great book, I didn't think it was as good as the others. Could be because I had trouble staying concentrated on my reading this weekend, or could be because I expected something else with the MC and the getting to know each other between Jack and Owen.

This is an engaging second-chance contemporary romance with a chemistry-laden love story. Ava is such a strong and loving mother, and Jack is a good man struggling with grief and guilt. Though I’m not a huge fan of the secret baby trope, and I didn’t really agree with what Ava did, I understood her decision. However, Ava and Jack never really got over each other, and it’s clear there are still feelings between them. It’s interesting to see how they work on all the issues between them and decide if they want to take a chance with each other again.

Their son Owen is adorable, and I love the time he spends with Jack and his family. It’s so sweet and heartwarming, and it’s obvious Owen craves the love of a father figure. I liked Jack’s brothers too. There’s so much fun and positive banter with the brothers, their wonderful aunt who took them out of an abusive situation a decade ago, and those they love.

Overall, this is an enjoyable read with a second-chance romance filled with longing, chemistry, and some scorching sexy scenes. The story does deal with some heavier themes, so I would recommend checking out the content warnings before starting the story.

Second Chance Cowboy is the first book in A.J. Pine's Crossroads Ranch series. A heart-warming second chance romance about first love and family.

Jack Everett left his family ranch to escape his father and the heartbreak of having the girl he loved push him away. Now ten years later he's back for his fathers funeral and the memories he tried to keep buried are coming to the surface. When he runs into his first love, Ava, he learns that when she pushed him away she was pregnant. Now he is faced with keeping his family ranch afloat and getting to know a son he just discovered exists. Jack and Ava have caused each other so much pain in the past, they may be strangers now but their connection is still there. Jack has to decide if Crossroads Ranch can be his future or if he's going to walk away again.

I loved all the characters in Second Chance Cowboy. Jack was a sweetheart and Ava was strong and caring. I'm not sure I could have forgiven Ava as quickly as Jack over her keeping her pregnancy from him. I did believe that she genuinely felt bad over the time he missed out on but it killed me that she took that choice away from him in the first place. However, the passion and sexual chemistry between them was undeniable. I loved how they couldn't keep their hands off each other and would steal touches every chance they could. It was a steamy build up to a passionate moment between them that was perfect for them. Let's not forget little Owen who was absolutely adorable and his interactions with ever one were the cutest. Also, Jack's brother and his aunt were fantastic supporting characters and the way they talked and messed with each other made me laugh.

Overall, Second Chance Cowboy was a wonderful second chance romance. I can't wait to go devour the other books in the series and see Luke and Walker find their happily ever after.

"He might not know her like he had a decade ago, but his heart sped up just the same at the mere memory of how she used to make him feel. Hopeful. Whole. Loved."

"All that mattered was this moment - Jack's hands on her skin, the electricity building between them as his tongue slipped past her parted lips, and she tasted a sliver of redemption. Restoration. Release."

There was something about this book. The chemistry between Jack and Ava was scorching. There's a lot more to this book that is worth mentioning, but it isn't very often that the chemistry between characters sparks this strongly from their first meeting (well, the one 10 years later) and continue throughout the title.

This is my first book by A. J. Pine, and I absolutely loved it. I thought Jack was authentic, and my heart broke for him and all of the things he was denying himself because he was afraid he was like his father. I loved all of the moments he had to prove to himself, and those around him, that he was nothing like the man and the past that he was running from.

I liked Ava, a lot. I thought she was strong, and I respected the reasons for the decisions she made, even though I am not sure I fully agreed with them. Choosing to keep from someone that he is going to be a father is a big secret to keep, and she knows this. And, she owns that she did it without really making excuses. She gives explanations, but not excuses. Did I totally agree with her? No...although I see her logic.

But, it doesn't matter if I agree with the choices of the characters as much as it matters that I believe they do...and, I believed in the characters.

The best thing about a second chance, and it worked so well here, is that there is a history between the characters that heightens not only the first meeting, but the subsequent interactions. It was done so well in this title that you felt the tension between Jack and Ava, the longing, the desire to reconnect and the fear that them not making it this time would destroy them both.

This is also the first book in a new series yet it doesn't fall into the trap of being too much about the secondary characters in order to build the story (which is a pet peeve of mine). I think this worked so well because the secondary characters are his brothers, and other members of his family, so their inclusion in the story feels more natural than other first in the series titles.

This was an emotional read with amazing sexual chemistry. I loved it, I recommend it, and I can't wait for the next in the series!

Second Chance Cowboy by A.J. Pine is book One in the Crossroads Ranch Series. This is the story of Ava Ellis and Jack Everett.
Ava and Jack were once young sweethearts but they ended up breaking up. Ava had a secret that she thought might mess up Jack's plans. Jack was headed away from his home town. Jack became a lawyer and now about 10 years later he back for his father's funeral. Jack plans on it being something that won't take long but finds that the ranch is manageable but vineyard is failing and he needs help.
Which leads him back to Ava...will this be their second chance at love? How will Jack feel when he learns Ava's secrets.

The world according to A.J. Pine is a canvas of past heartaches, mistakes and ever rising stakes. It's the lessons we learn, memories we make and the moments of laughter that help us through the rough times. From first love to broken heart, Jack and Ava take readers into the eye of a storm. With realism and wisdom, Second Chance Cowboy shows the pureness of heart and the naivete of love. The road is treacherous, the work is strenuous but the reward can be advantageous in the end. Youth broke their hearts can adulthood help mend them? The author and her characters twist and turn their way right into your heart.

Can we talk about that cover of Second Chance Cowboy first? Because hubba hubba 😻😻 that is one sexy cowboy. Good job Forever Romance! Because while I enjoy my cowboy romances, usually the covers are so cheesy and cartoonish that they're kind of a turn off. I thought this cover captured Jack Everett's lawyer and rugged cowboy self perfectly.

I was initially interested in Second Chance Cowboy because I've been wanting to pick up a book by A.J. Pine for a while. I keep seeing her name whenever I'm browsing on Amazon or Goodreads, but I was hesitant because sometimes that's just how it is when it comes to new-to-you authors. So, when I saw that she's starting a new series about cowboy brothers and the first book features a second chance romance (which is my FAVORITE romance theme), I couldn't not pick it up. I'm so glad I did because I really, really ended up enjoying Second Chance Cowboy.

I've read hundreds of romance novels with the second chance romance trope, so it's a treat when I find one that reads fresh, which was the case with Second Chance Cowboy. Ms. Pine did a really good job combining the second chance trope with the secret pregnancy trope and putting an emotional spin to it that I just ate up. I love the direction she took Jack and Ava's relationship. Right from the beginning I loved how the two of them communicated with each other, which then allowed the story to delve deeper into Jack's issues with his family, his father, and fatherhood, which gave the story more substance.

My favorite character was Ava. I loved how strong and loving she was, first in letting the love of her life, Jack, go and then taking on motherhood alone. And when he did come back, she was open about what happened in the past and she let Jack in even though there was a chance that he wouldn't stay. On top of that, she had to deal with her dad (ugh her dad was so annoying) and his issues with Jack. I love her and her son Owen together, and when they're with Jack and his family--those scenes were my favorite.

As for Jack, I really liked him too. He had a lot of deep-seated issues to deal with about his past and his dad, and my heart broke for him. I get where he was coming from, but at the same time I was also frustrated with him. Also, he's supposed to be this really excellent lawyer who was just offered to be partner, but we don't really see him do anything lawyer-y or use his lawyer skills or ever learned what type of lawyer he is. That sort of bothered me a little bit. However, I did enjoy his overall character development.

Second Chance Cowboy is an excellent start to what I believe will be a fantastic series, and also an excellent introduction to A.J. Pine's writing. I am very much looking forward to Jack's brothers' upcoming books and hopefully we'll get glimpses of Ava and Owen as well. If you're looking for a non-romantic comedy kind of contemporary romance but with some flashes of humor and without all the angst, I think you'll enjoy Second Chance Cowboy. If you enjoy cowboy romances, I highly recommend this one.

After Jack's mother died when he was a teenager, his father took a dark, deep turn into alcohol. This resulted in him also being physically abusive to his three sons. All Jack wanted to do was leave his town and start life over somewhere far away. While in high school he fell in love with a girl named Ava. She was sweet and kind and everything he wanted - but he knew he couldn't stay near his father. He leaves his small town, and his family ranch and becomes a lawyer in San Diego.

But Ava isn't the only person he leaves behind. Right before he leaves, Ava finds out she is pregnant. But she doesn't tell Jack. For ten long years she keeps it a secret - because he broke her heart when he left, and the one time she thought to tell him, she saw him with who she thought was his future wife (are these really good reasons to keep this secret?? I will discuss in a minute).

Ten years after all of this, Jack's dad dies and he comes back home for the funeral. It is here he is reunited with Ava, meets her ten-year old son, realizes it is his and needs to make decisions. He was offered a promotion at work, but that means moving across the country to New York. His father had invested in a local vineyard, which his two brothers do not want. Ava also works at a vineyard....so they now have a common interest besides their son.

Secret babies is a tricky trope for me. I need solid reasons for the baby to be kept a secret.  The reasons Ava uses to keep her son a secret from his father in this one makes no sense to me. I think it's really unfair for the kid and the dad to not know the other exists. A phone call, a text, an email - these are all things one can use to break news to someone. Then if the dad acts like a dick and doesn't want to be part of the kid's life - then you can be angry and keep him away etc.. Ava gets angry, admittedly irrationally angry, that Jack was not there to support her - for a kid he knew nothing about.

"You - you were getting married after I'd spent years changing diapers at four in the morning...joining the preschool PTO because yes, there was one...buying two extra car seats because the only way to be included in the carpool clique was to have all of the necessary equipment!"

But - he didn't know. So.....?

I do enjoy second chance love stories - but I wish in this one that Jack and Ava had a little more tension in their relationship once reunited. They start a physical relationship really quick and it just felt like a bit of a let down. There are issues that arise because Jack is still dealing with feelings about his late, alcoholic father and what that means for him now that he is a dad. And he has two brothers who run the ranch - both presented as moody and gruff...a good set-up for future books.

I guess it comes down to the facts that I didn't like the secret baby trope (the way it was handled) and the romance just seemed too pleasant after all the secrets and years apart. There was something missing for me.

This was a cute and very steamy read!

It's a wholesome yet romantic story about family but also shows how families can become 'dysfunctional' through events that occur.

I loved the writing style and the language that was used allowing the story to be so easy and enjoyable to read that it was hard not to quickly soar through the pages.

One minor thing that did come across as unrealistic to me was the level of understanding that the ten year old character seemed to have. I understand young kids can be very mature, especially with their own life circumstances but some of the heavy conversations that this character had didn't seem realistic to me.

I first encountered AJ Pine through her fantastic Kingston Ale House series. I did not guess she'd follow it with a contemporary cowboy romance. Going from Chicago to California wine country cowboys? After reading Second Chance Cowboy, Pine made a believer out of me.

Jack is headed back to his small ranching hometown for his dad's funeral. To say Jack has complicated feelings about being home is an understatement. It was interesting to see the roles each Everett boy plays and what their dynamic is like as adults as Jack reconnects with them.

Into that mix comes Ava, Jack's first love and the girl who broke his heart. It turns out they have a 10 year old son together and she never told him she was pregnant. It's heartbreaking but her reasons were valid. But now Jack has to figure out how he feels about having a son and what his role will be.

Jack is off kilter but he's such a good guy. He's always looking out for other people. Part of that is because of how he shielded his brothers from their dad's abuse and part of that is because he believes he owes them a debt for leaving town. He lives on the bare minimum so he can send money to help with the ranch. He doesn't believe he deserves better and oh was this hard to see.

Ava's life has been put on hold in many ways. She loves being a mom but she wants to rely less on her parents and start pursuing her art again. She's such a strong, generous woman and I loved how she tried to balance taking care of the people in her life. She has plenty of reasons for keep Jack  at arms length, chief among them that he's just going to leave again. But these two have never gotten over each other.

I loved how they got to know one another again. It's not always easy- the question of what Jack will do about Owen always hangs between them- but it's clear they still have feelings. They also have big issues to work through. Jack needs to deal with his past and confront his fears about being like his dad. Ava needs to own up to how she lied to Jack and caused him to miss ten years of Owen's life. Ava and Jack are able to tell each other hard truths and they're better for it.

I struggled with how much time Ava, Jack, and Owen spent together without Owen knowing Jack's relationship to him. You just know it's not going to end well. I also really struggled with Ava's dad. He was a real jerk, almost over the top. I didn't understand his logic at all and it just pissed me off anytime he was on the page. But it was gratifying to see Ava finally stand up to him.

I adored Jack's brothers Walker and Luke. I cannot wait to see what happens in their books! There's so much promise with the ranch and vineyard settings. I also loved Aunt Jenna and I've already asked Pine to give Jenna her own HEA. She deserves it and then some.

This was such a sweet, fun read and I'm looking forward to seeing how the series develops. Bring on the cowboys!

Swoony Second Chance Romance!

This was my first book by A.J.Pine and I absolutely loved it! Jackkkk Everett ! Boy, was I smitten with that man. His story pulled on my heartstrings. Son of a drunk, and a reputation for being the town low life. He knew returning home for his fathers funeral wasn't going to be easy, and would bring back haunting memories from his past. What he didn't except was to cross paths with high school sweetheart and love of his life, Ava Ellis.

I found Ava's character to be genuine and beautiful. I had so much love and admiration for her. She loved Jack with her whole heart and it truly showed in her selfless actions throughout the book. I also adored little Owen! His young, carefree character was very loveable. I just ate up his little mannerism's that were identical to Jacks. Too cute.

The author did an amazing job pulling me into this sweet second chance romance and I can't wait to read Walker's story.

Jack couldn’t wait to leave home when he turned 18. Being abused and trying tisane his bothers he was ready to get out.
He did good for himself and became a lawyer. Letting his brothers take care of the ranch and sending money back home.

When his dad dies he heads back home.
he has to take care of his affairs and learn they have a Vineyard to now take care of.

Ava was heartbroken when Jack left town. She kept a secret from Jack that she can not hide any longer now that he is back. But will he forgive her.

Hope and love with some drama keeps the reader turning the pages. Second chances sometimes do have a happy ending.

I voluntarily read a copy of this book.

We all look back on our past and pinpoint moments that we wish we could do over again. For whatever reason - be it circumstance, bad choices, timing - with some perspective we see where it went wrong and wish we could fix it. Second Chance Cowboy isn't a do over but an opportunity to own up to the past and plan a way forward. But for Jack and Ava, the past comes with such heavy baggage who knows how things will turn out.

I had a hard time with this because as romantic as it was, it was also emotionally heavy. At first I thought it was Ava who kept her pregnancy a secret from Jack and deliberately pushed him away for his own good. She was 17 or 18 at the time and made what she thought was the right move for both their futures. When he returns home to attend his father's funeral, the cat's out of the bag and suddenly he's hit with the reality of the past 10 years -- what he's missed with Ava and their son, but also how his younger brothers have grown up in his absence.

Not that Jack is in the clear. He' still terribly hung up on his past and carrying so much guilt. As a result he doubts his own ability to be a good partner and father. At the same time he feels the incredible responsibility to overcompensate for everything his loved ones didn't have. Jack's doubts were what got to me and for my own personal reasons, I got his tormented soul 100%.

After some reflection, what I realized made it hard for me is the crushing weight of all the expectations heaped upon every single person involved. Everyone expects the other to behave a certain way and to make what they believe is the obvious or right decision. In Jack's case, it's also the pressure that he inflicts upon himself that adds to his misery. I loved the rekindled romance because seeing a more mature Jack and Ava approach each other is that hopeful second chance we all wish for. It's a beautiful sight to behold. The renewed appreciation for his hometown and the reconnection that they all make with one another make your heart burst. I think A.J. Pine did exceptional work in showing us that aspect of human nature where expectations can either lift us up or crush us.

Jack and Ava couldn't have known the love they'd rediscover or the riches they'd find within family. In the end, pushing past all the guilt, hurt and hardships, Second Chance Cowboy is a romantic, heartwarming and spectacular welcome home!

Lawyer by day, Cowboy down to the roots in Second Chance Cowboy by A.J. Pine. Sweet, charming, full of angst love that I devoured in a mere couple of hours. As a fan of second chance romances, A.J. captured all my attention. The struggle in which this cowboy faces within himself versus others was gripping and heartfelt.

Jack Everett knows what destruction in a home looks like. As the oldest of his brothers he’s had to bear the abuse, guilt and hardships from his father. It’s the reason why he left at 18 years old to escape the turmoil. But as fate would have it, he’s back to bury his father and to settle paperwork; what he didn’t encounter was his ex-love, Ava surprising him with a matching mini me of him.

Ava has always held Jack’s heart within her own. Back in high school, in their last days of senior year, she saw the worst in Jack, but she still loved him. Loved him enough to send him away even though she carried a massive secret that she withheld from him. That’s what you do right? We do the unthinkable knowing it’s what’s best, but is it really?

“There was something in that moment before a kiss, in the anticipation of it. An exquisite ache. A rare hope. The promise of amazing -- or of unimaginable heartbreak.”

Now Jack and Ava are reconnecting and Jack is trying to process everything he left behind 10 years ago. The love still shines in Ava’s eyes for him, she believes in him, but can he believe in himself? Trust and know he is nothing like his father.

“You deserve so much more than you let yourself believe,” she said. “But I can’t make you see that, Jack. You have to see it for yourself.”

Family turmoil is sky high in this cowboy romance. The angst from the push and pull from Jack’s brothers to the guilt/grief inner battle in Jack and to the intense reconnection between Ava and Jack all mends together in a fantastic second chance novel. New to Pine’s work, I will say this won’t be my last book from her. I enjoyed her writing, the easy flow from each POV and she managed to grasp all the emotions from all secondary characters. I hope there will be more books containing Luke and Walkers’ happy ever endings as well.

I just love it when a books gives me chills because of the intensity and realness of the book. This is it you guys.! My first 5 Star read of 2018 and I am proud to say that this year is starting off great for cowboys. From the very first page, I knew that I was gonna love this book and its characters. This story is about love, second chances, and family which really touched me in a wonderful way. The intensity of their relationship was so powerful and realistic that it made me tingle.

We have Ava and Jack, high school sweethearts who had the sweetest love ever at the tender age of 18. Ava makes a huge mistake by sending Jack away and unbeknownst to Jack, she is pregnant. Fast forward 10 years, Jack comes back to town to attend his father's funeral and is surprised to learn that he has inherited a ranch and a vineyard along with his 2 brothers. Looking to sell the vineyard, he enlists the help of Ava, the girl who crushed his heart and renowned grape expert. Ava holds a big secret and when Jack finds out, it's pure gold. Throw in an adorable 10 year old, a grumpy brother, and a sarcastic brother, you have yourself an emotional, grounded, and entertaining romance .

As far as negatives goes....there wasn't any for me. I loved Jack, the cowboy-at-heart lawyer who did not forget how to get his hands dirty. I adored Ava, a single mom, who was passionate for grapes as much as she was passionate about her son. Their relationship was realistic, passionate, and grounded and I completely felt their chemistry straight to my core. There is a scene at the 89% that will absolutely pull at your heart strings. Seriously, Owen is a great kid and a wonderful addition to this story.

Well, you guessed it. I absolutely loved this book and I loved ava and Jack together. The brothers added a nice family dynamic to this along with sweet, little Owen. It was so grounded, raw, and heartfelt. Go pick this up pronto!!!

I didn't like this book, and I really tried to, but the entire plot made me so mad.

The main characters, Jack and Ava, were high school sweethearts. Ava finds out at the end of the school year that she's pregnant, but rather than tell Jack, she lets him leave and go to college without knowing he's a father. She uses the excuse that Jack's dad was abusive and Jack had expressed that he didn't want to have kids (yeah, he's an 18 y/o abuse victim, I think that's pretty on point). But rather than giving him that choice, she chooses to lie to him for 10 years. When Jack comes back to their town after his dad dies, he runs into Ava and her 10 year old son. WTF?!

The other thing that killed me was that Ava's dad didn't think Jack was fit to be a father because he beat up a kid at a party that was trying to sexually assault Ava. Let me say that again. Rather than her father being thankful that her boyfriend beat up the sheriff's kid who was trying to rape his daughter, he was mad at him and even sided with the sheriff. Again, WTF??!!

Now that I'm reading this review back to myself, I don't know why I didn't stop reading this book sooner. I've read another book by A.J. Pine that I enjoyed, and I really think I kept hoping it would get better. But it didn't. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be continuing this series.

An emotional second chance…

The cover caught my attention and the blurb drew me in. I mean, there be cowboys so it’s almost certain you will find me there at some point! A.J. Pine was a new to me author that enticed me with the promise of an emotional read full of cowboys (that point cannot be stressed enough) and she delivered.

Ava and Jack were going to love each other forever. Only it ended in confusion and broken hearts. Fast forward years later and it was time for answers. Painful? Definitely. The rewards though, could be immeasurable…

Those years weren’t idle. Both had carried on but their roads inevitably led them right back to where they started. Their bittersweet reunion was full of hurt and anger but couldn’t disguise the love that started it all. Their path was complicated without being artificial, dramatic without being over the top. Heart-pinging emotions swirled and bubbled in every corner, and I was happily along for the ride…

A slow start almost derailed me from what turned out to be a fantastic read. And, of course, then I wanted it to slow down again so I could experience the joy and laughter, even the tears, that much longer. This is a family affair and I’m on stalker watch for the sibling’s stories to come! ~Diane, 4.5 stars

I bit on the dull predictable side though I did enjoy the honesty and lack of drama. I liked how forthcoming they both were (after her big reveal). Easy reading, not much to it maybe a tiny bit boring but still a good filler if you’re looking for an in-between novel.

The story opens with Jack driving back home from San Diego to bury his father. Arriving at the cemetery, he sees only his brothers, Aunt and the officiant. Grabbing a bouquet of flowers walking toward the family he hasn't seen and has distanced himself from for the last ten years, he lays the bouquet at the headstone of his mother.
Jack's father was an abusive alcoholic and being the oldest Jack took the punishments that were meant for his younger brothers. Ever the protector. His Dad went down the tube after the death of their mother and the boys moved to live with their Aunt, their mothers sister who wasn't too much older than Jack at the time.
Jack starting a new high school meets Ava and she is it for him and ditto. After a broken leg ( at the hands of his father) dashes Jack's hopes for a baseball scholarship, Jack's not quite sure what he's going to do after graduation but here they are. Graduating. Things happen during a graduation party, her parents still don't know that she's seeing Jack, knowing her father who is a self righteous judgmental prick wouldn't approve, she's waiting for the right time to tell them. When things calm down a few days later and Ava needs to tell Jack something that will change both their lives, their conversation which we don't get until later in the book has Ava telling Jack that he should go. To go and leave town. Jack does just that. For ten years. Going through law school and has a great job and just earned a big promotion which has him moving to New York after he cleans up legal matters with the old mans death.
When he find out the old took a mortgage out on their ranch where his brothers still live (which he didn't even know they'd move back) and bought a vineyard that abuts the ranch property Jack isn't happy. The vineyard is in bad shape and isn't really sellable until it can produce fruit and a profit.
It's then that he runs into Ava too, seeing her after 10 years and also the surprise of his life when her parents come home early from their lunch with Owen, her son. Their son. Ava was pregnant when Jack left. Jack is one angry man. But seriously? Not like Ava didn't look for him. Then after while gave up thinking he was married and didn't want to rock the boat. After all it isn't like Jack ever came back looking for her either. Despite what Jack went through, there were some things I dislike about him and his martyrdom was one of them. It got old quick. For a smart guy his self flagellation would have worn down the strongest woman.
I loved his two brothers! Walker and Luke. They work the ranch. Walker self medicates and can be a belligerent sob when he's drunk, but damn if he doesn't speak the truth. Luke just speaks it sober.
When he and Ava decide to try the friend route to get Owen used to being around Jack and the family it works great. Jacks mood swings left me dizzy but he's so well written you're right in there with the story. The bulk of the book is Ava and Jack working through his trash. She's a great support for him.
She realizes too at some point that Jack isn't going to stay there and will likely return to San Diego and he finally admits he's got a job in NY. Which puts a whole new spin on things. The long distance Dad trip. Ava even wonders at one point if telling Owen is the best thing then having his father leave again the next week.
My heart really went out to Ava. She was a great Mom and Owen was a great kid. She did so well despite her absolutely obnoxious father who I wanted to cold cock and was really welcomed by Jack's brothers, her helping them get the vineyards in shape but they really took an interest in Owen and seemed to enjoy being with him. Oddly enough the one thing that stuck out for me in this story was that it was the brothers who did things with Owen and not Jack. Just sayin'.
This was a great read. It kept me turning the pages and I read it in one sitting which says a lot.
I can't wait to read Luke's story coming up next!
Get story AJ!!
