A hard-boiled crime thriller from the best-selling author of Brick
Suicide. Drugs. Murder.
DI Braddick is put on the case when a hijacked drug deal has resulted in murder and an eye witness goes missing. When victims are discovered strung up from the rafters of an abandoned fish factory, on the Anglesey coastline, the police are baffled as to what went on. A deserted trawler found at the scene helps Braddick put the pieces together.
Could this be the work of a notorious Russian crime family?
When an undercover officer goes missing everything points to an informer for the family and it is clear they will stop at nothing to the silence the leak and have their revenge.
As the body count rises Braddick will come to realise that no one is safe…

Holy flying mackerel!!! (Because of the fish factory, get it? Sorry.) What an absolutely thrilling ride this book is! By the end of it all, I was utterly exhausted and as I write this review, days later, I’m still reeling!
The book kicks off with an apparent suicide but it’s obvious quite early on that there’s more to it than that. And that’s all I’m going to say because the less you know, the better. But when a story makes me gasp in shock from the beginning, I just know I’m on to a good thing! I mean, really! Cruelest thing ever!
Shadows is phenomenally action-packed from the first page. It had me glued to the pages and completely enthralled until the very end. This has everything to keep you hooked. Suicides, drugs gangs, murders, corruption, explosions and a bunch of very, very bad and vicious Russians who will stop at nothing. Nobody is safe in this story! I’m telling you know, make sure you have a chunk of time so you can read this in one sitting because you won’t want to put it down!
What we have here, is the most brilliantly constructed plot and while there are a lot of players, it never gets confusing. I have no qualms whatsoever in admitting that this is one of the best thrillers I’ve ever read! At 284 pages, I raced through this like my life depended on it and loved every minute of it!
This was my first introduction to author Conrad Jones (I know, I know. I swear I don’t really live under a rock) but I will most definitely be reading more of his work! Highly recommend!
DI Braddick is back and boy what a dark and twisted case he finds himself working on.
The story starts off with a drug delivery going wrong. Right from then I knew that this would be a dark and chilling read and I wasn’t wrong.
It would be beneficial to have read Brick which is the book before this due to some references to an event that happens in that one and to some of the characters. Plus if anything Brick is an amazing read that you really do not want to miss out on.
The drug world is definitely not a good one to be part of. To many drug lords wanting the power and having to show everyone who is in charge. They are certainly not people you want to mess with. Even the team are really feeling the affects of this case with devastating consequences.
What happens to some of the victims in this story is pretty horrific. The author goes into enough detail to shock and horrify the reader without making it to uncomfortable to read. Let’s just say there is no straightforward stabbings or shootings going on in those book. These thugs make sure that their victims suffer.
Shadows is a dark, disturbing yet gripping read. As with Brick I devoured this in one sitting. The author really knows how to grab the reader by the throat not letting them go until the very end. Another book in the series that is going to to be a sure fired hit with readers.
Books by Conrad Jones really need to come with a warning: ‘Do not start reading unless you have time to read it all in one sitting because once you start it is very difficult to stop.
This is book 2 and picks up from Brick although it works very well as a stand-alone book so it won’t matter if you haven’t read Brick.
The adrenaline pumping suspense starts at the very beginning and gains momentum right through the book to the very end. Conrad has an exceptional talent for describing injuries that creates a very detailed picture in the readers’ mind that makes the book even more gripping than usual.
The notorious Russian family was introduced in book 1 and they are back in full force in this book with drugs violence and dead bodies appearing all over the place DI Braddick has his work cut out to put the pieces together before anyone else gets killed.
DI Braddick is an excellent character and what I would expect from a DI his ‘bedside manner’ is non existent and although he is an excellent investigator he is somewhat lacking as a person but that fits in very well with the rest of the characters and the story. His partner is Ade and to be perfectly honest I didn’t like him very much so wasn’t too disappointed with what Conrad had in mind for him. He is big headed and little regard for the thoughts and feelings of others and I don’t feel he was a good fit with DI Braddick and he certainly didn’t have much respect for his fellow police colleagues.
This book is every bit as good as his previous books and ticks every box for me and therefore earns a definite 5 stars. I am looking forward to the next book.
Thank you to Bloodhound Books for the advance copy of this book.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The author is clearly a skilled storyteller and I found myself swiping my Kindle pages more and more quickly as the book progressed.
DI Braddick is a police officer with a major problem - Russian drug lords are right on his doorstep and they will do anything to be the top dogs in town. This story is a tightly packed tale of why getting involved with gangsters probably isn't the brightest of ideas! There are a heap of twists and turns, and some parts of this book are quite gruesome but they were an integral part of the story nevertheless.
This was an expertly crafted novel, highly recommended from me.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. Thank you to Bloodhound Books.
This book opens with a shocking, desperate act, throwing us straight into the midst of a dark and gritty story which explores good versus evil, right versus wrong and how far we’d go for those we love. A drug deal has gone terribly wrong, men are missing, others from a prominent local group of criminals are dead, money is owed and the police seem to be one step behind the people who all roads lead back to: a Russian crime family. Throw in some twist, turns, some shocking moments and you have a real page turner.
Written as a multi-person narrative the plot unfolds through the eyes of both those working to unravel the mystery and those in the thick of it; detectives, undercover cops, big and small time gangsters and innocent bystanders caught up in horrific events. I really liked the different viewpoints; each character had a distinctive voice and really pushed the story on.
An exploration of good versus evil, Shadows isn’t a book where the baddies and goodies are easily distinguished – each character is fully fleshed out and even some of those who are on the wrong side of the law have redeeming features. I found I was sympathetic to some characters I probably shouldn’t have been and really wanted them to find their way out of the mess they’d found themselves in. I really enjoyed reading about the crime underworld and the power play between a large crime family in Liverpool and a massive Russian family who have taken control of huge swathes of the country. The story could have been complicated but it was well plotted and executed and was all the better for the dark and gritty moments (and when I say dark, I mean dark!).
At times a police procedural, at others a violent and complex thriller with some tales of morality thrown in for good measure Shadows is an enjoyable read which kept me guessing until the end. I felt the same frustration as the police when something else unexpected happened, trying furiously to put the pieces together before I was taken off in a different direction. It really kept me on the edge of my seat and was a real page turner.
Shadows is a follow on from Conrad Jones Brick, although not a series, there are crime elements that are connected and I highly recommend reading Brick first as it is a superb novel. Shadows is the perfect title for this novel as there are drug barons, murders, death that you really do wish the under world is kept in the shadows, or even better didn't exist. They do, and Conrad has given us a great detailed insight into a fictional take on what may happen in reality. You really do benefit from reading Shadows in as few sittings as possible. There are plenty of twists and turns as well as toe curling moments.
DI Braddock really has his work cut out for him, he is working alongside Joanne Jones who was called in and used to work under cover.
Ban she bring enough to help solve the crimes, and does the criminal drugs under world get caught in time? This is a book drenched full of baddies and multi layered deception. With Conrad Jones easy to read gritty writing style, it is a winner of a read for me.
I really enjoyed this book, it was a real rollercoaster with a lot of twists and turns right from the first few pages! I loved the character development as the book went on and the way that the author managed to tie up several rather complex plot lines really well at the end, its an excellent story and loved how the plot picked up pace towards the end of the book, I didn't expect the ending and that made it even more special as it kept me on my toes right to the very, very end! Definitely one I would recommend!!
When you pick up a Conrad Jones novel you are entering a proverbial war zone. The bodies just keep piling up and most of the book's main characters end up dead. 'Shadows' was no exception. This was a real 'edge of your seat' story with twists and turns galore. The brutality of Liverpool's gangland culture was turbo charged when Russian gangsters clashed with former Irish paramilitaries. Old style villains were just swept away in an orgy of violence. The old adage of 'crime doesn't pay' should be retitled as 'enjoy your wealth while you can for, in the end, someone will always take it from you'.
Hm. I've read loads of Conrad's books and his earlier ones are brilliant but I have to say this is my least favourite.
There was something a bit off about the writing style, repetition of words and sentences, a very simplistic tone to it, and so overall it felt a bit rushed.
There were far too many insignificant characters and I found myself wanting to skip some sections (Clint & Graham?!)
Book 2 of the series and while you can read it as a standalone it does help to have read book 1, since a lot of the gang members crop up again. I enjoyed the story, the characters, and the setting. There is some gritty scenes, but then its thriller so you should expect some dark and gritty scenes. It's definitely a ine click book if you like a decent crime/thriller series.
This book starts out with a bang. A woman has been investigating a group of powerful people and finds herself on a bridge about to leap to keep her family safe. Then a group of fishermen find themselves in the wrong place when they try to drop off some crates of fish in Anglesey when a rival drug gang catches them and uses them as a message. DI Braddick is called in to investigate the murders even though they are out of his district. He instantly knows what is happening since these are some former crime bosses from Liverpool. He is in for a shock when he learns that an officer committed suicide by jumping off a bridge. Braddick is going to have his hands full trying to get to the bottom of this bloody mystery.
This book starts out with a bang and goes from there. How can you not get sucked into a story where someone is willing to kill herself to protect her family from torture, murder, and worse? Then you are there to witness some fishermen that took the wrong job. It just get more brutal and bloody from there. These are some serious people that you don’t mess around with. These people don’t just simply kill you, they will torture you, your family, and anything that is important to you.
I loved reading about Braddick in Brick and I couldn’t wait to see what happening in Shadows. This is a great thriller that will draw you in, creep you out, and leave you breathless. Conrad Jones is an author that you need to check out!!
I received Shadows from Bloodhound Books for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.
First of all I have to mention that there is a great start to this book it really helps to set the tone for the rest of the story and definitely dragged me straight into the story.
Shadows is both shocking and grisly at times but it is guaranteed compulsive reading. If it was a film I probably would have covered my eyes for some of the scenes. Although with this being a book I had to be brave and it was just so easy to be pulled into the story. Tense at times I just didn't know what was around the corner and my attention was kept pretty much the entire way through. The story unfolded really well with bits and pieces coming together slowly but surely.
There are a few characters to follow but overall I think this works out fine and it certainly keeps things interesting. Mainly because I became invested in the various characters differing situations. There are a few surprises along the way that managed to keep me on my toes. I found Shadows to have an unpredictable feel to it so much so that I didn't quite know how things would turn out in the end.
Braddick is an intriguing character and I really did think that Jo and Braddick made a great team and I loved the twists and turns of their investigation. With lots of themes packed into this book such as murder, drugs and violence there is a little bit of everything which makes this book so compelling.
Shadows is a book full of danger and tense moments!
With thanks to Sarah Hardy and Bloodhound Books for my copy. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
OMG what a stonking great read. Shadows by Conrad Jones grips you by the short and curlies and doesn’t let up until you reluctantly put it down at the end. Put aside enough time to read the majority of this in one sitting because your stomach or mind won’t thank you for prolonging the agony of suspense!
This makes no apologies for being a gritty, dark crime thriller. The seedy world of drug pushers, torture, murder, suicide it’s like living in a different world but the reality is this probably does happen …. sheeeesh, give me a dull ordinary life any day, but I confess I was riveted by this.
The writing is blunt and descriptive, it makes for a speedy read simply to find out what happens. I have been missing SO much by not having read any of his other books. I was willing to read and review this one purely because it is published by Bloodhound .. I haven’t had a dud one yet from them and I am grateful they have enlightened me to some fantastic authors and the crime/thriller genre is fast becoming my go-to for entertainment.
In this we have a mix of Russians (baddies) Liverpudlians, Welsh and Irish, can DI Braddick sort this muddle out!?
Thoroughly enjoyed this and have no hesitation recommending Shadows .. now excuse me while I head to download some more by Conrad Jones!
So I’m excited about this story as not only is it set in North Wales and Liverpool (my home town), it is also written by a fellow Scouser (for any international readers, that’s a nickname for anyone from or lives in the Liverpool area).
The story starts off strong with some nail biting scenes, including the opening chapter showing a policewoman hanging off the side of a bridge. It contains many twists and turns along the way, reaching a satisfying conclusion.
But, and there is a but, I felt there were too many different viewpoints along the way and minor character were given far too much emphasis. For instance there was almost an entire chapter dedicated to a Welsh man who only appears in that one chapter and quite frankly the information that he brought to the story could have been done in a different way. Also at time the dialogue felt stiff and repetitive.
If I had to recommend it to anyone it would be those who enjoy gangster/mob crime stories.
Braddock is put on a case when men are found hanging from rafters ,this is going to be one hell of a chase. One of their own has also been found dead , a beautiful undercover operative, but did she commit suicide or was she pushed..There are double dealings , betrayals and murder ahead as Braddock searches for the truth. The Russians are the most evil bunch at the heart of this story ..The heart racing terrifying ,pulsating ending will leave you reeling and send shivers down your spine.Conrad Jones has written a fast paced ,terrifying chiller read here ..Five stars ..
I got Conrad Jones previous book Brick for free. It sat on my kindle for ages before I got round to reading it!! Once I started I couldn't put it down.I read it in a couple of days n then bought Shadows.Brick was fantastic but this is even better. It is very violent but what you would expect from a book about criminals! It was like watching a film where your heart is racing and your stomach is doing somersaults! Really thrilling. I can't recommend this book highly enough I can't wait to read the next DI Braddock story.I have a couple more Conrad Jones books to read and I am sure that I won't be disappointed. I'll let you know😉
This is a cracking read, racing as it does from Holyhead to Liverpool and back again. DI Braddock is a Merseyside cop who is working with North Wales police after the discovery of bodies in a fish factory on Anglesey. Alongside Braddock is Joanne Jones, a former undercover cop. Gang warfare, Russian criminals, unexplained deaths and disappearances all contribute to a fast-paced and well-written page-turner of a novel!
Conrad Jones. Shadows. Book 2 in the DI Braddick series. Following on from book 1 in the series BRICK , this book is very fast paced with violence at every turn of the page. DI Braddick was trying to catch the bad guys again. The Karpovs are back causing havoc in the crime world. I found this book to be unputdownable and read it fairly fast. I love the pace and the violence is so good. 5* 02 December 2017
What a brilliant follow up to Brick and although there is a connection and back up information you could read this book as a stand alone. Gang land crime off the scale with plenty of blood and guts and the odd swear word, well actually a lot of swear words but you wouldn't expect anything else if you wanted to get to the bones of the story. I absolutely loved it and read it in two sittings.
Another gripping read from Conrad Jones. Shadows features once again DI Braddick based in Liverpool. A gritty crime thriller involving gangland "activities". Once I started reading this bookI I could not put it down. The death of a woman in the opening chapter is the start of a great plot kept me on the edge of my seat. Look forward to more from this author.
I love Conrad Jones books, they are gripping and gruesome. This one is as good as all the others with twists and turns and that twist that you didn't see coming because you were too busy trying to keep up. I only wish he could write faster.
Conrad Jones, definitely deliver in DI Braddick Book 2!!
Another AWESOME story, that continues from Book 1! If you love and TV shows, like CSI, Law and Order, you will love following DI Braddick! A hard to put down read, that will have you speed reading to the very climactic end!!
Another fantastic book by Conrad Jones! Very well written, the details make it easy to visualize the story! Do not pass up the chance to read this book!
2nd installment of DI Braddock and even better than Brick the first book Constant action, twist and turns, violence and double dealing. A great recipe for a great read. Can't wait for book 3
Well worth the 5 stars. I really enjoyed "Brick" and wasn't sure how this would compare. But it was fantastic. I love the story lines and the characters in these books. I highly recommend this to anyone and can't wait to read the next.
I had a hard time putting this book down! Once you read Brick you have to read this follow up, it was great all in its own! I want another Braddick book!!!
