Conspiracies and intrigue in 16th Century Spain...
This is one of my most hotly-anticipated books of the year. Rich in historical detail with a story line that is simply unputadownable, Flock, The Gathering of the Damned, is an example of historical fiction at its very best.
Book 3 in The Flock Trilogy picks up where Book 2 left off, and I found myself immediately thrown back in the thick of the action.
This isn't a standalone book, you do need to read the other two books to appreciate how wonderfully compelling this story is. Set in 16th century Spain, during the Spanish Inquisition, Flock, The Gathering of the Damned, is full of conspiracies and plots. No one is safe, and everyone has their secrets.
Jana Petken is not only a master storyteller, but her attention to the historical detail of the era has to be commended. It is very obvious that Ms Petken has spent many hours researching this period and this comes across in her writing.
As before, I found the characters very well drawn. It was great to meet up with old friends, such as David, but Ms Petken has brought new characters into the story, and they slipped in as if they had always been there.
Reading this book was effortless, it was like watching a movie, and I didn't notice the time pass by while I was reading.
I cannot recommend this series, or this book, enough. Fabulous, rich storytelling that will leave you wanting more.
After reading the first two books in the “Flock” series I grabbed “The Gathering of the Damned” as soon as it was released. I think after reading all of Jan Petken’s books I expected this new installment to be a page-turning, highly compelling read but I must admit, Ms. Petken just blew me away with this one! As always, it was meticulously researched and rich in atmosphere of sixteenth century Spain, full of intrigue and conspiracies. What I also appreciated was the new characters that were introduced, perfectly complimenting the already familiar heroes who I came to know and love. David Sanz, a militiamen to the Lord Rafael Perato, finds himself in the thick of it once again as his Lord goes missing and the suspicion for the recent events in Valencia that brought both its former Viceroy and the Inquisitor to their grave, falls on him and his men. Confused and hunted, David and his captain eventually start suspecting that the new Viceroy might have some sinister secrets of his own, and set on a perilous journey to uncover the truth. The struggle for power and the length one will go to retain it is shown with admirable precision here. The love line and the return of an unexpected “guest” from the past in the end of the novel was also an exciting addition to the plot. Beautifully written and incredibly riveting, this one is definitely a must read for all fans of historical fiction.
This book is the end of a great three-book series that I literally read the entire series in four days not wanting to put the books down.
The writing of Petken is uniquely styled full of the history of Spain and it's horrific Inquisition and the politics of the era image latter years of the 15th century. I was totally drawn into the story as it continues with the young militiaman David in service to Lord Rafael Peralto.
As David continues to harbor his shame and dark secret he forged ahead to redeem himself. The Catholic church seeks heretics while they're own officials deceptions and perversions are basically shoved under the rug. It is appalling yet accepted and supported by the monarchy.
This is a truly fast paced and we'll written story with several memorable characters and loads of suspense and action. I absolutely loved it!
A definitely first rate series and must read to historical fiction buffs! I recommend it highly! I plan to read more by this gifted author. Brava!!
The first book in the historical fiction Flock series I found interesting having never really thought about Spain during the 16th century - the pagentry of the novel left me excited to know more. The second book swept me into the story and wondering how it all would end. This, the last book in the trilogy, is a wonderful and befitting end. Reading you will feel and experience both the glamor and ugliness of the time - the degrees of deceit and love will fill you with extreme emotions...the inner battle of self preservation or doing what is right afflicts us all and permeates the tale, the research is top notch - never has a point in time of the inquisition been brought to such light...once again Ms Petken's story telling ability shines brightly...historical fiction at its best...a true wordsmith...enjoy...YOU ARE IN FOR A TOP NOTCH READING EXPERIENCE...
The third and final installment in The Flock Trilogy, this book brings everything full in a satisfying manner. The Spanish Inquisition is still in play, but not nearly as central to the plot as in the previous books. While religion does still play a part, it offers the possibility of David (born a Jew then converted to Catholicism), who is now willing to convert to Islam to marry Halina, the love of his life. Petkin focuses on the lives of the primary characters, particularly David Sanz and his family, as well as the lives of the Perato brothers. Even Christopher Columbus comes into play in a minor part. Once again, Petkin’s masterful storytelling is riveting and enlightening. Her research is spot on and I always learn more about world history than was ever taught in any classroom. I will miss the characters in this series, but am eager to see what she brings us next.
READ THEM ALL AT ONE TIME This is the third book I had read in this series and I strongly advise readers to buy all three and devour them in one sitting. There is a list of characters at the beginning of the book, but on an e.reader it can be tricky referring back to them. It took me a few pages to remember the backgrounds and actions of the characters from the first two books. As usual, the pace is excellent, the story is great and the finale tied up all the loose ends. You are taken into a world that was hard, brutal and unforgiving. Another fantastic book by this author.
I have read almost all of her books. This trilogy was so hard to put down. I wasn't sure if I wanted to read this time period in history especially reading what the books were about but this author could make my life sound exciting. I only gave four stars this time because I had difficulty keeping some of the characters straight. Sometimes they were called by their rank, sometime by their first or last names. Getting ready to read Swearing Allegiance. Problem is the sequel isn't out yet!
I have just finished this trilogy by Jana Petken and felt compelled to give a review of her incredible series. This was an outstanding book and an outstanding series overall. When it comes to historical fiction in my opinion nobody does it better than Jana. From the first page to the last page in everything she writes she leaves you captivated. No matter the length of the book the pages just fly by leaving you immersed in her tremendously entertaining tail that she's spun.Five stars as usual for Jana.
Final instalment was just as thrilling and interesting as the first. Looking forward to reading more of this authors work as she has a real way of immersing you inside the stories alongside the characters
