Reclaiming Hope #1

How We Survive

Rate this book
Nate~
With the world in chaos around us, the only thing I could do was try to keep Felix safe as we searched for our older brother. We’d been traveling for over two years, searching Ministry camp after Ministry camp and trying to steer clear of the Rebels. I didn’t know what to do when we ran into a whole group of shifters with guns. But then, the huge, gorgeous guy that found us did the unthinkable…

Tre~
At first I thought the two young shifters were trying to sneak up on me, but I soon realized they were only passing through. I was going to send them on their way until I heard the others coming. What was I supposed to do? How else was I supposed to save them? The delicious man and his brother would’ve been killed had I not claimed him.

Will Nate and Tre be able to work together to keep themselves and their packmates alive? Or will they let the cruelty of the outside world tear them apart?

***How We Survive is the first book in the Reclaiming Hope series, but is a standalone novel. Each book in the series will feature a different couple, but the couples will show up throughout the series. It’s a paranormal shifter romance between two men with explicit language and graphic sex intended for Adults Only.***

Michele Notaro

Michele is married to an awesome guy that puts up with her and all the burnt dinners she makes—hey, sometimes characters are a bit distracting, and who doesn’t plot when they’re supposed to be cooking? They live together in Baltimore, Maryland with two little monsters, a three-legged princess, a four-legged goofball, and a cutie with giant ears (aka their two kids, their two cats, and their dog). She hopes to rescue another cat soon, and if her hubby wouldn’t kill her, she’d get more than one… and maybe a few more dogs as well.

She loves creating worlds filled with lots of love, chosen family, and of course, magic, but she also likes making the characters fight for that happy ending. She hopes to one day write all the stories in her head—even if there are too many to count!

This is a pretty decent shifter read, with plenty of biting and licking and mating.

The Reclaiming Hope world has potential, but I would like to see more of it vs. having it summarized in exposition monologues (like Tre telling Nate the true story of the war between the human government, called the Ministry, and the shifter rebels).

Tre and Nate's voices sounded too similar, and the secondary characters all ran together, except maybe Patty and Felix.

I love wolfy pack stories, but there were far too many descriptions here of who was cuddling whom, who was sleeping next to whom, and so on. It made the story drag in places.

I also noticed a few grammatical issues, nothing horrifying, but another edit wouldn't have been amiss.

Despite these issues, I found this to be a quick and sexy read, and I will read Patty's story coming next.

Good but clunky. A very unique shifter story, not enough worldbuilding.

A basic idea of this universe, post apocalyptic, but that’s barely touched upon.

“I’ve never even dated someone before. In case you didn’t notice, there’s been a war going on, I’ve been in hiding for three years, and I just turned nineteen, for god’s sake. You’re like a thousand.”

“Three hundred twenty, give or take,” I corrected.

Age gap
No lube, spit and a prayer
Virgin hero
2nd Hero has been with both men and women

Loads of snuggles and sharing between male and female shifters. The main love story is between two male shifters.

Brutal on page description of torture, lots of killing, both humans and shifters.

No real connection to the characters. The story tries to get deep, but the emotions feel mostly superficial.

Audio – 4 stars
Story – 3.5 stars

I loved Nate and Tre. Yes, they have a couple of rocky moments in their relationship, but for the most part, it’s low angst and crazy affectionate. As a matter of fact, the entire pack was very tactile, and I found it all to be very sweet.

My 3.5 score is because the story was very long-winded. There’s was a good amount of action, but the pacing was too slow for my tastes. Some scenes could have been eliminated and/or shortened.

It's been a long time since a read a shifter story and after reading a few books from Michele Notaro that I loved, I thought I could give a try with this one.
I really liked it. Like really really liked it!!

description

I loved the world building. I loved the characters. All of them.
Nate and Tre were very sweet. So beautiful. borderline too much at times but I didn't really cared.

I will definitely continue on as I want to know about Patty and all of the rest of them now!!

This was an AMAZING book!!!! I've read a lot of shifter books, but very few pulled me in and made me love the world and characters like this one has. I am honestly shocked that it is the author's first paranormal book, and can't wait for more in the series!

I'm not a big fan of recapping the whole story, especially since I'm really bad about deciding whether something would be a spoiler or not, so I'd rather talk about my feelings about the book. Tre and Nate were amazing together. Tre wasn't your typical big bad alpha that had to always have his way and didn't listen to others - he was possessive and protective of Nate, but valued him and his opinion as well. Nate was charming and sweet, but had a streak of stubbornness and could definitely hold his own.

And the side characters - oh, the side characters. Patty was wonderful, as were many of the other shifters we met along the way. The bad guys were actually BAD. Bad things happen in this book, people. I legit cried a couple of times while reading it. But - as I say in pretty much every review I've written for Sloane Kennedy's books - going through the painful things makes the sweet that much sweeter.

This book wrapped up the story for the main two characters in a satisfying way, but there are a LOT of things that will need to be resolved later in the series, and I can't WAIT. I hope she writes the next ones soon, because I NEED to find out what happens next to these characters!!!

I liked this one. Really liked! :D

I mean, I rolled my eyes sometimes and ended up with a lot of questions about the war and the consequent culture that I hope will be answered in the next books... (some little things didn't sound realistic, so I really hope there were a reason)
Besides it, I find this story really interesting and couldn't put it down until I finished.... and THAT END.... oh God, I need book 2 just NOW! But well, seems like I'll have to wait... :'(

Different shifter dynamic in this one. I wasn't sure if this was current times or somewhat in the future.

Tre and Mate are True Mates but struggle with each other from the beginning. Tre has a strong feeling for Nate but is unsure way. And Mate knows that there is something different about Tre but doesn't know because he is so young.

For me this is a great introduction to this new series.

Finally a book again that kept me reading. It sets a strong dystopian feeling right at the start where we meet Nate and Felix and their father doing everything so his kids have a chance to escape as the last 2 shifters of their town.

For 3 years the boys walked through a war devasted country where small groups of rebels and the so called Ministry are still fighting. Felix, now 15, still in his wolf form since their mother's death and refusing to change into human and Nate, 18, who's fiercly protective of his little brother. When they meet Tre and Patty their situation isn't becoming easier with Tre having to make up that Nate is his mate to protect both guys from an asshole of an alpha.

It's surely not spoiling to tell that they really are mates (we're in a shifter romance after all) although it takes them a long time to acknowledge it. With a war going on, with severely troubles with other shifters and finally finding their big brother you could be confused easily on such a detail.

The world building is great although we only get as much knowledge as we need, never more. Most of the characters feel real. Only Gregory and his pack are completely one dimensional and that makes that part of the story not so amazing. I always felt that villains even such small ones have to be more than a mindless bully.

I also always have some trouble with century long lifespans when it's not elemental for the story. Here it's just a fact without any consequence or reason so far. Of course that's just a little niggleing on a side aspect but there are also other small little pieces of the story like the reason for the war and how it is explained or the role of the humans: they are supposed to have started the war but now I pictured them more like sheep, inferior and at best ignorable. That was the annoying part of a really good story with a lot of potential to become an amazing shifter story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this new shifter world. It was different and it sucked me right in.

Nate and his brother have been on the run for three years trying to find their older brother. Hey come across and town and run in to Tre and Patty.

Tre and Patty have been a pack of two for two hundred years. They just moved on to a new pack when they come across Nate and Felix. Tre doesn't understand why, but he lies to his new pack mate and tells them Nate is his mate and both him and Felix are from their old pack.

They go through some horrible experiences but it draws them together and forces them to realize that it isn't just a ploy. They are True Mates and they are meant to be. Through trials and tribulations, their pack grows and a new mission is set.

I cannot wait to read Patty's book. And I hope Edward gets what's coming for him.

I honestly have no idea how I feel about this one, which is a rarity for me. I mean, I kinda liked it? But I also spent a lot of time rolling my eyes at it? I don't even know. Same with the audio narration. Like, it's cool that I can easily tell the difference between the characters and all of the words are pronounced correctly. But, also, Nate kinda sounds like a girl? And Tre's deep baritone was weirdly fake? Seriously, I don't even know if I like this book or not. And I'm probably devoting way too much headspace to trying to figure it out. So, three stars it is.

Shifter books used to be my jam, but there haven't been a lot of them that I could even finish in the past couple of years, so the fact that I stuck this one out to the end is a point in its favor.

Loved the heavy hurt/comfort and the pack cuddling (seriously, so much cuddling and scent-marking), but the relationship between Tre and Nate got too sappy and couldn't hold my interest in the second half of the book.
I was also not a fan of where the plot went because it got much darker content-wise than I expected. I feel like it's a strange decision to include a warning for explicit language and graphic sex between men in a MM romance, but not for the other stuff (CW spoilers: )
because that would've been warnings I'd have appreciated.

Not sure if I will continue this series, because judging by the teaser I'm expecting the next book to contain humongous amounts of angst, and I don't think I'm up for that, especially considering the content involved.

enjoyed but nothing super special = 3*

I have not read a whole bunch of shifter books so I have no idea how much of this book is recycled material but it came across reasonably well. I did a wee shout for joy when the word "alpha" is mentioned saying it is a word not really in use any more but that shout was premature. The book repeatedly mentions X is an alpha. There were some minor editing issues but nothing I found too bothersome. An oddly unbelievable age difference. It seems silly to quibble about one fellow being nearly 300 years old when he is a darn wolf shifter, but he just lacked any wisdom or gravitas that one might expect from someone in their third century. Plus the other fellow was very very young. It was a bit disconcerting. There was also more clunky exposition than I would have liked but again not a fatal flaw unless that sort of thing really bothers you. I may need to skim over this one again when book 2 comes out as there were a number of unanswered questions at the end.

This was such a great book - fantastic world-building and complex, interesting characters. The story of good vs evil is played out and rather than the usual twists and turns, this has wonderful loops and snakey paths with depth and reasons. The relationship development between the two MCs is beautiful so there's no instalove, saccharin-covered declaration, but instead a deep and earned love that is so good.

A great read and a brilliant start to this series.

Awesomely Original :)

***4.5 stars (rounded-up)***

Warning: Torture, murder (not graphic, but includes a brief mention of a teenage boy) and slight hint/background knowledge of noncon.

Okay, I know the author states that book two is "Coming Soon", but for me it's not fast enough! Holy shit is this book good. Where to start?!? Okay, first I will state that this isn't your typical shifter book. So yeah, be ready. There is a bit of insta-feelings, but not how you are thinking/use to. In addition, this isn't a typical AO story. In fact, Alpha is the only title used and it seems to have more to do with personality than anything. The one thing that seems the same is the existence of "True Mates".

The author does a wonderful job creating the world that these shifters, humans and other supernatural beings live in. If you are a person that needs instant information then this book might annoy you. See, the author gives the reader only so much, which in turn kept me reading; needing to know. Of course this book ends on a cliffhanger; not concerning the romance aspect, but to the underlying plot and supporting characters in their pack.

There really is so much going on in this story. IMO the story isn't too long and flowed really well. For instance, there are two factions up against one another: The Rebels and The Ministry. Be patient, all will be revealed in the end about these two groups. In addition, there is more to Felix, Nate's brother, not shifting. Not to mention, an evil shifter from Patrick's past comes into play a couple of times in the story. Then there is a revelation that Patrick has near the end, which of course sets it up nicely for the next book in the series. Honestly, I caught on to this pretty quickly. Last, but certainly not least is Ronan, Nate and Felix's older brother whom they are searching for. That is another aspect of the story, and I have to admit, something I am very interested in.

My only question is what happened to their packmate Cameron near the end. All are accounted for except for him. Hmmmm..... Other than that and a bit of repetition, this is an amazing start to this series and I cannot wait to read what happens next.

DNF @ 16%

This is a paused did not finish because I'm not sure what I want to do with HOW WE SURVIVE. The beginning presented an interesting post-apocalyptic world but it's bare bones on descriptions and I still don't know why there was a huge war and what the difference between the Rebels and the Ministry is. I thought it was humans against shifters but turns out there's both on each side so I have no idea. The writing is very simplistic and repetitive to the point that it started to detract from the story itself. Not a total deal breaker but definitely a factor in why I put this book down and haven't picked it back up in weeks.

On a positive note I liked both Tre and Nate and I also really enjoyed how tactile the characters were. I love shifters books that involve a lot of touch, scent marking, and nuzzling. While there aren't many answers yet I was intrigued by the world and wanted to know more.

Part of my reason for stopping and my confusion on whether or not to keep going is related to something that happens in the plot. Nate has stumbled into a group of Rebels and Tre has lied and claimed that Nate is his mate in order to protect Nate. When Nate, Tre, and Tre's brother are heading back to the camp, they stop to scent mark each other in order to reinforce the lie. During the scent marking (basically nuzzling their faces in each other's necks) Tre bites Nate on the neck without Nate's permission. As it's explained, biting someone without consent is basically sexual harassment in our real world terms. Nate is devastated and while Tre feels really guilty about it, I'm left conflicted on how to think about Tre as a hero now. This combined with the lackluster writing and unanswered questions means I'm going to DNF for now and maybe I'll come back to this at a later date.

A small pack, an interesting worldbuild, a post-apocalyptic setting, and shifters had me hooked from the get-go. It has been over twenty years since the war broke out between shifters and human governments. In that time humans and shifters have aligned themselves either with the Ministry, run by humans, or the Rebels, run by shifters. The human governments knew about shifters for hundreds of years and had an agreement with them, but then they reneged and began experimenting on shifters. When the shifters discovered this, they tried to make peace but the humans refused and, instead, bombed a high school full of shifter-only teenagers. And so the war began, killing many and destroying the face of the world as it was known.

Nate and his brother, Felix, have been searching for their older brother, Ronan, for almost three years when they stumble across a Rebel group out patrolling. Tre and Patty are a pack of two (something unheard of in shifter society) and since Tre is well aware of what could happen to Nate and Felix at the hands of one of his coworkers, so to speak, Tre lies and tells them that Nate is his mate and that they all got separated. It doesn’t take long, however, before Tre and Patty realize that they want Nate and Felix in their small pack for real.

So, so average

I was really excited when I saw that this book had 10 reviews all 5 stars. And really disappointed as I was reading it. The story is intriguing at the beginning, but the it just gets average at best. Some of the protagonists were supposed to be very old. Well, that worked only in author's head. So much angst and non stop apologizing I have never seen in my life and hopefully won't. Characters didn't act or talk like adults, the plot just got weirder and weirder like one of those tv series, where you get outstanding first couple of episodes or even a season and then it gets bad because the sequel is made to get some cash and plot just goes out of the window and just becomes boring.

Started out great, but then devolved into a bit of a video game (two teams, you're either the blue team or the red(?) team - and only those who have played the game from the beginning know what those two teams actually are or why they're there in the first place). Then it turned out shifters are immortal (at least one of them is over 400 years old) but still act like 20-somethings and have no clue about their own culture at times. When no explanation for any of that seemed forthcoming, I gave up.

In this book the characters had more depth than in "The enchanters's flame" but the story was not as good in my opinion.

I like the characters, although Nate seems really young and Tre was for his age and alphaness really clumsy sometimes.

will read the next one and can't wait to have Ronans story ...obviously I go for the complex guys

A first book that was enough for me to fall entirely for the universe created by Michele Notaro.
I choose to read book 2 before writting this review, so take in consideration that it's a review based on the serie.
Sooooo if you're reading this review asking yourself "should I read this series?"
I would answer yes, BUT don't expect coherence. There's a lot of situation that doesn't make sense. You think you understand something, that it's logical and the next scene you're going from unexpected to unexpected. But that didn't stop me to read. Mainly because I'm a f*cking romantic and I just live for mate love stories and because of the characters. I would give my life for Felix, Patty and Chris. (and Zekke)
For a "wolf shifter" story, I expected the same mechanics in a pack as any other book I read on the genre. But no, Tre is an alpha like no other, and he doesn't act like a dictator that no one can resist when he's speaking and that felt refreshing.
To sum up, I loved it, and I'm getting back on book 3 and IT IS ALREADY REALLY GOOD.

Take care,

Ghost.

One of the Best...

By far, one of the BEST shifter books I have ever read... I am elated that there are more in this series... World building nonstop... Character development nonstop... Storyline nonstop... I really was hanging on for every moment... Good or bad... The story was fantastic... I believe Nate and Tre were a solid couple to continue a strong foundation to build on in future books... Highly impressed with thus author... He promises more to come, too... Highly-rated a 5!!!

DNF! I hate shifter books. I think they are THE dumbest genre of book. The only reason I picked this book is because I really like the author and she’s a great writer. HOWEVER, this book is filled with grown men rubbing their cheeks against one another in order to release pheromones, mating rituals, “baby I’ll never leave you” cliches, & grown men growling at each other. If that’s your thing, you may enjoy this book cause the writing is good. I just found it ridiculous
