Ok ok, I know this is a chidren's book and technically I have been reading it to my daughter, but secretly I have been enjoying it as well.
The story of Pig is fantastic - think a slapstick version of Animal Farm. He has a great friend (Duck) and together they hatch a plan to escape the clutches of Mr and Mrs Falmer, and also the evil masterminds The Chickens.
'Obviously' the story involves combining a tractor with a rocket (the wonderfully named Trocket, a trip to Pluto with the Trocket being powered by pig poo, and a crash landing in a garden centre.
I could go on, but I wouldn't want to spoil it for you. However, I must mention the part where Duck gets stuck in a tool box - comedy genius.
So there you go - please be warned though that this will be of no use to you if you can't speak pig, which apparently I now can. More slops please....
This was read at the insistence and the recommendation of my 8 year old son who spent much of his time reading the book giggling. This is a child's book so don't expect to take more than an hour or so to get through it but it will be a joyous, juvenile, silly and genuinely funny hour or so.
Any book that starts with the main protagonist farting into the house of the EVIL CHICKENS is starting off as a winner in my opinion. While this sets the tone for the rest of the book it is a good example of how to write a book to entertain children. But, and this is a vital but, it works on its own terms as well. The purpose of the book is to amuse and entertain and it works on every level. While I read it I was amused and entertained.
The writing keeps with the conceit that the pig has learned to write, but not brilliantly. The humour is juvenile but also quite witty and funny. I had quite a few laughs as I read the book and the naivety of the main character and the pathos this engenders as the tale progresses is wonderfully realised and quite sad. While my son did not analyse quite as much as I have this small but charming tale is darker and deeper than you first think and there is an element of sadness within it. It adds weight and credibility to the tale.
I found this tale engaging and not in a condescending way. It was a light, refreshing and fun tale and from my sons perspective he immediately asked to order the second book.
While this is not a life changing book, if you have a child you want to have a laugh with, then this comes highly recommended. If your child reads and recommends it to you don't be all sniffy about its lack of gravitas. There will be no regrets in reading this book.
Its a winner on every level and will worth a chuckle or two.
This is another book on our 'Children's Book Day' list that I have to read for a course at work. I have to admit that when I saw it my heart sunk a little and to be honest it didn't get any better.
Pig has decided to write a diary of his life, not expecting much to happen, but with his best friend Duck, the cows, sheep and evil chickens life on the farm has more to write about than you would think. Then pig discovers what Farmer really wants him for and everything turns around.
I understand that the whole 'Diary' book is popular and whilst I didn't enjoy things like 'Wimpy Kid' I can see why kids would like them and it does get them reading. Which of course I approve of. But this book made me cringe.
I don't want to be mean or degrade this book or anything like that. Remember everything here is just my opinion, but I honestly did not like this book. Every page is filled with the words 'farts' or 'poo' - of course kids find this funny but there was just too much for me and the grammar is dreadful.
I understand it is supposed to be written by a pig so of course the English won't be perfect but this will just teach kids bad habits. It is aimed at the sort of age range that is very impressionable and therefore this book will just make kids think that this sort of language style is acceptable - they wouldn't realize that this is a marketing/character thing.
It is the sort of book that I can see kids loving, and with the fart jokes in it, boys especially will pick it up, but for me I just couldn't gel with it and I don't think I'll be reading the sequel.
Reviewed by Liss Norton. Did you know chickens are evil? Read this book and you'll find out all about their dastardly and cunning ways from Pig himself. The story is funny, fast-paced and there's lots of farting in it, which should appeal to most children.
Pig is an endearingly naive character who thinks Farmer gives him lots of lovely slops out of kindness. When his friend Duck tells him the shocking truth – that Farmer plans to chip-chop him up and eat him – Pig is forced to make his escape. But the only way out of the farm is in a trocket, a poo-powered rocket that the evil chickens have made out of a tractor. The trocket is programmed to fly to Pluto.
The story is bursting with zaniness. There are alien garden gnomes, crazy disguises, a stowaway, a flock of itchy sheep and a sat-nav that speaks Picken (Pig language spoken by evil chickens). Add in Pig's kind-heartedness, his determination not to look like a Softie Pig and his inability to leave any scrap of food uneaten and you've got a great book. The cartoons on nearly every page and the well-spaced writing make this a book that even reluctant readers will enjoy. Not to be missed.
I think it was a really funny book. it is funny how the pig finds out lots of bad news. The pictures gave it a whole different perspective. I think it is a great book for early readers to people around 12 it is funny for different reasons for younger readers it will be funny because of the adventures pig and duck have but for older readers it is funny to see how the pig writes and how he says "this is me i is pig.”
Oh, it was so hard to read it, was laughing so much I couldn't see the lines... lovely book, I recommend it!
My 14-year-old rolled his eyes when I put this on in the car, the 8-year-old loved it. Eldest did laugh a few times though, he'd have to admit.
This was a commute CD from the library for a few school journeys (and for me to see if the youngest wants to try the rest of the series on paper).
The narrator is Pig, growing fast on a farm, happy with his Farmer providing lots of lovely slops... until he finds out from his animal friends that actually, it's to fatten him up!!
What follows is a bonkers adventure with some evil chickens, a rocket and a whole lot of silliness, in the form of Pig's diary.
He sounds a lot like the BFG ("I is Pig"), and speaks with a West Country accent. There are sound effects and it's all very entertaining as a listen.
Animal stories always go down well, this is one where readers will understand more than Pig, and feel both superior and worried for him. My two were questioning the realism of a rocket, and enjoying the poo/fart jokes as they regularly occurred.
This book was so adorable. It is written from the pigs point of view. He loves the farmer and the duck. But he finds out the farmer wants to butcher him so he agrees to the chickens evil plan.
"Apparently, even chickens like putting pigs in their Trockets (tractor -rocket)not because they are brave and fearless, but because they are expendable. I says to Duck I have not idea what expendable is. So he tells me. Expendable means that if the Trocket goes bang in a puff of smoke or flies off into space and is never seen again, then no one will miss me."
In disguise(pg 157): "I is not Pig. I is a sheep!" "If you are a sheep , my dear boy, why are you speaking pig? Oh, no, how silly of me! All the other evil chickens poke their heads out and stare."
The illustrations are so fun and simple. I just loved this book!
The moment I saw the cover with the phrase: This is me, I is Pig, I just had to read this book. When I did, I had so amny good laughs at the terms used, for example, Trocket, or Evil chickens, and eating slops! This is one of the best books I've read, and if it doesn't have much action or anything, the hilarious story and idiotic ideas make up for it. I mean, confusing garden gnomes for evil aliens? Seriously? And riding a tractor powered by poo into space? How many jokes and stupid ideas will Pig come up with? Dressing up as a sheep from wool collected by backscratching them? Making the house of the evil chickens and the two farmers fly into space? Just the sheer number jokes and things gone wrong in this book are hilarious. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone.
My daughter received this as an audio book from her cousin who was finished with it. I will say, I'm the first one to be like ENOUGH ALREADY with fart jokes and poo stuff. And I'm an English teacher, so I think the subject-verb agreement would drive me nuts if I only had the paper book.
But the audio book! My son (age 2) just LOVES it. The BOOM! I am dead! and the sound of the chickens laughing on the audio book are GOLD. I get so sick of listening to this over and over until I hear that "clack-clack-clack-clack-clack" chicken laugh, and then I'm back in. If you like this book at all, you owe it to yourself to listen to it in audiobook format!
My 8 year old and I loved it. Funny but not crude. Imaginative. Cute.
My son liked that it has some 8 year old humor in it( farts, poo, stuff like that that I don't usually read to him), and I liked that it wasn't too crude in those areas so it was humorous, and had an imaginative good story plot , with good themes in it. , and fun characters. (Especially put and duck). It wasn't predictable, it was silly but weirdly true in some parts , and it has a good ending in both our opinions.
Consiglio? Ni… sinceramente c’è di meglio
A quick read for children in the popular "diary" format. While I enjoyed the story and found some parts very funny, I did tire of the constant "poo" and "farts" references. I also found the poor grammar (I understand that it is a pig's diary) a bit annoying. It does also remind me of a junior version of Animal Farm. So all in all a good concept and good story but in my opinion it would have been better with less "poo" and "fart" jokes and without the poor grammar.
This was a pretty funny little book, all written from the perspective of Pig. He, of course, doesn't have the best grammar, and is obsessed with slops, farts, and his long-standing rivalry with the evil chickens. His best friend Duck doesn't have the heart to tell him that the Farmer is raising him to (gulp!) eat, and when he finds out, Pig is determined to run away. Good for a laugh - kids will like this one.
A quick, fun read: I don't think I'll be reading this again as the many "poop" jokes got a little tedious in the end and the whole book felt like a "save the animals: go vegetarian!" campaign which irritated me a bit.
I personally didn't feel irritated by the intentional misspelled wording: in fact, I found it quite humorous.
Other than that, it's a cute, occasionally funny read which young kids will love.
I read this book a few years ago but I still remember the funny way it is written. This book being written from the perspective of a pig is hilarious and I couldn't help but laugh every time the 'pig' wrote something like 'I is pig' in his diary. This book is a funny, easy read that anyone can enjoy!
I read almost every night to my seven year old son and I think this tops our list of our most enjoyable reads. It had us both in stitches of laughter and at the same time brought us close to tears. Pigs love for Duck and his loyalty to his friends is simply beautiful. This is a must read for all parents and kids!
It was a very funny book! I didn't expect it (coming from a scholastic book fair) to be a well structured, and funny story! It was a little childish at some points, and that did stop it from being great, so I give it 3 1/2 stars.
it was the funniest book i've read:) my favourite part of it was when he bit the mini farmers bum. and it had funny writing so it was my favourite book. I can't wait until i get the 2nd book.
