I'm gonna start saying that Adrian is my favorite MMC of this series and it pains me to give this book only 3 stars.
But I can't overlook how much the Terri Anne failed at researching about diabetes.
This will be a long rant and probably no one is going to read it, but if just 1 person does and this helps them to overcome the huge amount of misconceptions and flat out mistakes that I found on this book, it'll be worth it.
The MFC, Victoria, is a type 1 diabetic since she was a little kid. From what I could muster, the author thinks diabetes = high sugar blood always and forever and that couldn't be futher from the truth.
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas produces none or very little insulin. Insulin is the hormone that allows sugar to leave the bloodstream and get inside the cells. High sugar levels in the blood can and will cause a myriad of problems, such as nerve damage, kidney failure, eye damage, ... So people affected by this cronical condition have to work hard to control their levels with insulin shots (in type 1, usually a few per day to mimic basal levels + shots after meals), exercise and appropriate diet.
My first problem with this book is how much Victoria drinks alcohol. Alcohol is really tricky for diabetic people, especially type 1, because it causes an hypoglycemic episode followed by an hyperglycemic one. That happens because, at first, the alcohol will inhibit the liver sugar production and then, after being metabolized, it will become mostly sugar. Still, there are several scenes of Victoria drinking away in clubs with no regard for her health.
Another huge problem is that she stops shooting insulin wherever she becomes distracted (seduced or depressed) by Adrian. Every few pages, I would start screaming KETOACIDOSIS in my mind. Diabetic ketoacidosis is a serious complication of diabetes, especially type 1. It happens at repeated/constant lack of insulin. Without the hormone, the body starts breaking fat to use as fuel (since the sugar is no getting inside the cells), and this process left unchecked will result in the buildup of acids in the blood. THIS LITERALLY CHANGES YOUR BLOOD pH. To the point you become really short breathed because your body will try to get ride of the acids by all means, including through your lungs. No to mention it makes the hyperglycemia more extreme with all the extra sugar produced that will still no get inside the cells. It can lead to coma and death.
Oh, and Victoria keeps saying her kidneys are already damaged, and guess what organs get really f*cked up by ketoacidosis?
And then the ~reveal~ scene. Just a quick recap: Adrian picked her up after she left his sister's club (she was hiccuping-drunk), took her home, talked, and had a bunch of amazing s*x. About 24hrs later (with no meals or insulin shots in this period because he doesn't know she is diabetic), he has to leave and Victoria has a moment to herself. Only she feels so bad she barely makes to the bathroom. There, without measuring her sugar levels (that could have been low given that she hasn't eat and was ~exercising~ a lot), she shoots up the max amount of fast insulin she can before passing out. When Adrian comes back and finds her, he says she barely has pulse. She starts waking up while he waits for an ambulance and tells him she's diabetic, insisting she doesn't need to go to the hospital (because she's so great at taking care of her own health, right?). The next scene makes it that it wasn't necessary and without any mentions of meals, insulin shots or sugar blood levels, they go straight back to bed. THE END. Final comment about this: at the long run, hyperglycemia is what will f*ck you up. Kidneys, eyes, nerves, skin, heart, feet,..., they will all get damaged by high blood sugar and low insulin levels. But in a really short spam, hypoglycemia is more dangerous. Just the other day, I was reading about a murder by insulin superdose. So, as you can imagine, the reveal scene just rubbed me off as all kinds of wrong.
Ok, after this gargantuan rant, I have to say that I really love Adrian and I like Victoria (diabetic problems aside) more than I expected. They are my favorite couples of this series (even though I love Anya, Cristiano was a HUGE disappointment, and Dante, who used to be my favorite till his book, let me down more than once). Adrian is simply the most devoted (to the point of borderline stalker) MMC and I love that Victoria isn't a doormat and actually have a dark and dangerous side.
