I would give the book 3 stars in overall quality. The writing is as shaky as one can generally expect from your average light novel with a few solid moments and a few truly laughable ones, but the pacing is quick and the characters are likable. But as a fan of the series and in comparison to other Shonen Jump spin-off LNs, I'm giving the reading experience 4 stars. Most Jump LNs I've read cover inconsequential side stories and are careful not to disrupt the status quo, but because the Seraph novels are written by the same person as the manga, they have more freedom to flesh out aspects of the manga's world that the manga itself just doesn't have time for. This one in particular fleshes out the vampire lore and vampire characters of the series.
Relatedly, it's important going in to realize that the title is misleading here, as it refers to the codename "Mikaela" that apparently has a long history involving multiple characters, rather than the character called Mika. These two volumes (which seem to be all we're ever going to get) cover the backstory of Crowley and his relationship with Ferid. I knew that when I bought them, so I got what I expected. Crowley is one of the most enjoyable characters for me in the main series and the Crusades are an interesting setting for a light novel. I'm excited to move on to the more tragic second half of his story.
Real rating 3.5/5, maybe would be 4/5 with a professional translation. I love the 'Seraph of the End' manga and anime, so when I heard there was a light novel in that universe focusing on vampire lore and Mika’s life as a vampire specifically, I was so excited! I was a bit disappointed to find that Mika’s POVs are essentially just bookends on the first and second volumes. However, the backstory provided for the relationship between the vampires Crowley Eusford and Ferid Bathory is interesting (even more so in the second volume) and both storylines are relevant to some of the questions I and other readers had about world of the manga. OOO I read this back in 2018/2019 from what i remember, the writing style was pretty bad lol or rather... simplistic. idk if it's because i found it on some doubtful websites and there were some mistranslations but there was no sugarcoating or elaborate descriptions; it just got straight to the point about crowley and Ferid’s backstory... and a little bit about mikaela. I was obsessed with owari no seraph at the time though so i took it for what it was and thoroughly enjoyed it. in fact, it made me love crowley even more as a character. and dislike ferid because i realized how weird he actually was, which is funny bc i loved him in the anime/manga
Misleading title and equally misleading cover. Having only watched the anime and read some of the manga I went into this thinking it was, well, vampire MIKAELA's story. As it turns out, it technically is but... it really isn't, as this mostly deals with Crowley's back story and Mika is really in there for just a tiny tiny bit at the beginning and near the end. It was entertaining enough though, but not quite what I signed up for.
It was very interesting to know more about how everything started and Crowley's story before becoming a vampire. That mystery involving the name "Mikaela" got me engaged at reading. I really needed to read this meanwhile I'm waiting for the in coming chapters of the Manga.
i think this story’s greatest strength is its homosexual fan service and undertones, and its weakest point is its heterosexual fan service and the plot armour.
