A detailed exploration of 200 Ancient Egyptian objects from museums around the world, gathered here into one handy, pocket-sized guide This magnificently illustrated book brings together 200 of the finest and most significant Ancient Egyptian treasures and artifacts preserved in museums in North America and around the world. Spanning some 5,000 years, Ancient Egyptian art was the product of a complex, interlinked series of beliefs and practices. Pocket Ancient Egypt answers these questions by examining a wide range of significant objects, beginning in around 4000 BCE from all spheres of Ancient Egyptian life. The compelling and informative text discusses some of the best- known masterpieces of Egyptian art―including the iconic mummy mask of Tutankhamun and the beautiful painted plaster bust of Nefertiti―and contextualizes them in relation to lesser-known works. Pocket Ancient Egypt provides a captivating overview of 5,000 years of civilization on the banks of the Nile, but it is also a fascinating history of collecting and methods of interpretation. How have the fashions of certain periods and collectors affected the ways in which Ancient Egypt is represented in museums and presented to the public, and what can these objects tell us about the people who made and commissioned them? 250 illustrations
A very enjoyable and quick read, like the other edition I have read, this is a book that is not just straight forward and simple but also a book to revisit and use it to further your interest.
I have very little idea of Ancient Egypt prior to this book, to me it consists of Tutankhamun, Cleopatra VII and Ramesses II but this book shows so much more diversity to the artefacts. Of the 200 listed, you can count on one hand the artefacts of the popular Egyptian icons.
This book really shows you how talented these ancients were, especially the skill set on carvings that are several thousands years old. Is this guide comprehensive? I doubt it but it is an excellent reference and and opening into the World of Ancient ancient and the footprints left behind.
I adore this pocket museum series. I have read the one on Vikings also, and own the one one Greece, but have not read this one yet.
Their is such a wealth of information in this book in pocket or bite size pieces so it i easy to delve in and out of the book and learn lots along the way.
It is highly unlikely that I will get to any of these famous museums around the world but through the pages I can see what these museums house.
One, I will no doubt reread over the upcoming years.
