While the Old Testament books are directed to the people of Israel, they also bear great significance for Christians who can decipher in Old Testament writings the gradual phases of God’s salvific plan. In The Old Testament in the Light of the The Stages of God’s Plan by Stephen B. Clark, the author provides a comprehensive presentation of how and why the Old Testament forms part of the Christian Bible and offers a program for how to read the Old as a Christian—namely, in the light of the New.
A great book that teaches you how to read the Old Testament as a Christian: with not just understanding of the events but the kind of understanding that brings spiritual fruitfulness. Clark hits on the key issues one would expect (is the creation account in Genesis literal, are the other parts of the OT historically reliable, source criticism, genre, etc.) But the way he addresses each particular issue in an overall framework of the stages of God's plan equips the reader not only to think well about the issue at hand but how to think well about other issues one might encounter in reading the Old Testament as a Christian and how to understand not just what happened but what God is doing and how he is working for the good of his people. Highly recommended, especially for preachers and teachers of the Word!
