Dr. Marin Rose is a veterinary surgeon. When her husband, Sandy, dies in a stable fire and threatening incidents happen to her, she leaves home to find work abroad. Years later, she returns home to accept her family responsibilities and prove, at least to herself, that Sandy’s death was not accidental. Marin discovers that justice may conflict with the strict interpretation of the law and that few lines are straight.
Laurel (Balsor) Pardy was born in Nova Scotia during WW II where she graduated from Acadia University, taught school and met her diplomat husband. She worked variously as a teacher, writer, editor and from 2003 until her retirement as Director of Volunteers for the Riverside Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario. Since then she has written two books, Life on a Carousel, and A Lady of Lunenburg. She and her husband are now retired and living in Ottawa.
Throughout this book I found learning and myself. Our relationships to one another, our past, and the animal kingdom are linked inextricably. Family relationships evolve and may include relations who don’t share our DNA. I loved the characters. One thing was distracting; Marin’s conversations were stilted at times. Her narration of events went smoothly but using plain language with almost no contractions when she talked with some characters threw me off.
