Long Lost (Kate Burkholder #4.5) Short story
by Linda Castillo (Author), Kathleen McInerney (Narrator)

Chief of Police Kate Burkholder and and her sometime work partner, long time lover, John Tomasetti, are taking their first vacation together. Poor John, each book it seems that Kate forgets what they have discussed regarding their relationship. He has to wonder if she even listens to him. Of course, Kate is always on the job, even when she's not on the job, and the bed and breakfast where they are staying might be haunted by the ghost of a girl who went missing twenty years ago. Why spend some quiet, restful, downtime together when you can dig up an twenty year old cold case instead? It is nice to see Kate and John in a more lowkey situation.

EXCERPT: 'There's an apple orchard behind the old barn,' she tells me. My grossdaddi planted all those trees fifty years ago and they're still producing the best McInstosh apples I've ever had.'

'The couple who were here last weekend saw her in the orchard,' Harley says.

Fannie makes a sound of annoyance.

'You mean the ghost?' I ask, trying not to feel foolish.

Tomasetti picks up the pen and begins filling out the registration form. 'Everyone likes a good ghost story.'

ABOUT THIS BOOK: It’s autumn in Painters Mill, and Chief of Police Kate Burkholder and John Tomasetti are taking a much-needed vacation at a small bed and breakfast an hour outside of town. After closing a difficult case, they’re looking forward to some down time, but their relaxation is cut short by rumors that the old house where they’re staying is haunted by a girl who disappeared twenty years earlier, leaving nothing behind but some bloody clothes by the river and rumors of a volatile relationship. Swept up in the girl’s story, and a need for justice, Kate and John begin looking into the mysterious disappearance of Angela Blaine. They discover long-buried secrets.

MY THOUGHTS: Definitely a short story, but a very satisfying one.

One thing I couldn't figure out though, why only go an hour away? Next time you decide to go on a break, Kate and John, head further afield.

This is an Amish Suspense Mystery Novella, and this is the 4.5 book in the Kate Burkholder series. This was a very short novella, but there was a lot in this little Novella. The whole novella was just over 50 pages long, and it only took me 45 minutes to read this book. I really enjoy being with Kate while she is trying to go on a vacation. Her and John Tomasetti runs into a missing Amish woman case, but will they help to solve it. I love the ending, and Kate does not even get hurt at the end.

Kate Burkholder and John Tomasetti decide to get away for some extended time together at a bed & breakfast not far out of town. They get drawn into a local unsolved mystery involving the disappearance of young woman more than twenty years ago. Despite their best efforts to ignore the urge, both end up conducting an unofficial investigation.

This story accomplished two things: an opportunity for Kate and John to focus on their relationship and a chance to work as a team to solve a case. It’s short but managed to be highly entertaining. I had the great fortune of listening to it, which was even better with Kathleen McInerny narrating. The novellas aren’t a favorite format but this was a nice interlude, minus the usual murder and mayhem.

Short and sweet! Kate and Tomasetti try to spend a few days away together but end up discovering a local cold case. Of course they solve it in no time and there is a very neat twist at the end.

This short story was nicely written and quick to read. It's best feature is how it shows the developing romance between our two main characters. John Tomasetti is really opening up to Kate and beginning to put his devils behind him.

A nice little read but I would still have preferred a full book!

4 stars for a pleasant short story in the Kate Burkholder series. Kate and John Tomasetti are off to a B&B for a romantic weekend away from their cop jobs. They become aware of a missing woman who disappeared from the B&B 20 some years ago. They decide to investigate. They do solve the mystery and it has a satisfying ending. I read it in 1 day.

4.5⭐
Genre ~ crime fiction
Series ~ Kate Burkholder #4.5
Others in the series ~ #1-16 + 0.5's
Setting ~ Ohio
Publication date ~ May 7, 2013
Est page Count ~ 55
Audio length ~ 1 hours 25 minutes
Narrator ~ Kathleen McInerney
POV ~ single 1st
Featuring ~ 22 year old mystery

Kate & Tomasetti are off to a bed and breakfast for a weekend away. Tomasetti wants nothing more than to just relax, but when they learn there's a girl that disappeared from the area 22 years ago they're soon wrapped up in the mystery of it all.

Not typical for this series in that they were not working on an active brutal murder case, so I thought I'd be bored stiff, but I ended up liking it. I was pretty sure this was a solid 4 star read the whole time, but I was quite pleased with how the end played out so I bumped er up.

Narration notes:
Kathleen did a find job.

Chief of Police Kate Burkholder and agent John Tomasetti of the BCI are headed for a weekend at a B&B an hour from Painter’s Mill. The autumn foliage and beauty surrounding them catches their eye – they are looking forward to spending two days away from the stresses of policing. But when they arrived at Maple Creek Inn the two running it fill John and Kate in on the ghost mystery in the area. It seems a young woman disappeared twenty years previously and nothing but bloodied clothing was found. Unable to help themselves, they ask questions of the locals – but would they find any answers to the disappearance of Angela Blaine?

Long Lost is #4.5 in the Kate Burkholder series by Linda Castillo, and it was a great read. Quick and easy, fast paced and mysterious, the short story filled a spot between #4 and #5 (which I’ll read next month). I’m enjoying the evolving relationship between Kate and John – two wounded souls who have worked together for around three years now. Highly recommended.

A perfect short story for the in between novel time!

Kate and Tomasetti are trying to get away for a romantic weekend when the couple who run the B&B they are staying in drop an unsolved cold case of the disappearance of a young girl by their inn in their laps. Everyone who knows Kate, knows she won't be able to leave it alone.

The case is solved in this short work and the ending was wonderful. Sometimes justice is best served in not revealing the truth.

Although Linda Castillo’s Kate Burkholder series has progressed to eleven full novels, I came across a short story, LONG LOST , and found a wonderful audio vision through my public library’s online app. Kathleen McInerny narrates this story in which Painters Mill Chief of Police Kate Burkholder and her lover, John Tomasetti, who is an agent for the Ohio BCA, are on a weekend get-away at a B&B. It’s supposed to be romantic with no talk of police work.

That’s the plan, anyway. The inn is charming, as are its proprietors. They are a former Schwartzentruber Amish couple who left the community because they found the way of life too restrictive. Now, they are Mennonites. They are quite surprised to hear Kate speak the language they know so well. Kate, of course, was raised Amish and left at 18. When the owners learn that their guests are in law enforcement, they just can’t help bringing up the case of a young woman who went missing twenty years earlier. Thanks, but no thanks, they say. But Kate is a cop, through and through. Although Tomasetti really wants a quiet weekend with Kate, he can’t really help himself either. The pair begin interviewing persons knew Angela Blaine and may have some idea what happened to her all those years ago. Doesn’t she deserve justice?

Most of those whom they talk to assume she is dead, and they assume she was murdered by an abusive boyfriend. He vehemently denies it. Will Kate and John find a grave? A body? Will they find anything at all? I had an inkling of what they would find, but I can’t say I was sure of it. And I especially was not expecting their response.

Our protagonists solved this impromptu case so quickly that they still had time to enjoy their weekend. I prefer full-length novels, but LONG LOST held my interest, and the narrator did an admirable job with the characters. I will definitely check out the other short stories by Castillo when I get a chance.

3.5 rounded to 4 stars

I didn't realize that Linda Castillo had written some short stories in between books in the Kate Burkholder series! My library has a couple of them....the rest I will buy...as I read my way through this series. It is one of my favorites!

It's fall and Kate decides to escape the stress of her job as police chief in Painter's Gap for a nice weekend away with her lover, John Tomasetti. They arrive at the quaint, picturesque Bed and Breakfast more than an hour away, looking forward to some down time. But it seems the B&B has a reputation for being haunted. They get the full story from the owners....about 22 years ago, a guest, Angela Blaine, disappeared. Only a pile of bloody clothing was found. No trace of the woman since, except some sightings of her ghost. Kate and John both get sucked into the story and do some investigation, seeking justice for Angela. Turns out some secrets are best left alone.

Great short story! I love how both of them got sucked into the investigation despite them going away together to leave all that "cop stuff'' behind for a couple days. Interesting story, and some nice character development for Kate and John. This story is meant to be read after book 4, Gone Missing. If you read out of order, the story has some spoilers for Gone Missing. The B&B trip takes place just after they closed the missing persons cases in book 4.

I listened to the audio version of this story. At 1.5 hours, it's an easy quick listen, narrated by Kathleen McInerney. McInerney reads at a nice pace and has a pleasant, easy to understand, voice. A nice listening experience! I enjoyed the story while working out in the yard.

The Kate Burkholder series has 10 books, with a new book, Shamed, coming out in July. There are about six short stories sprinkled in among the books. Best to read the series in order as some of the later stories/books do have at least minor spoilers for past plots.

Moving on to book 5, Her Last Breath.

Another wonderful book by Linda Castillo. This one is a short story and i was able to finish it in a few hours. What I love about her books is it really doesn’t matter if you read the whole series or not (although I highly recommend ALL of her books), each of her books reads as a stand-alone book. She always explains who the Amish are, who the Chief of Police is ... etc. Another 4 star read!!!

A great character Kate Burkholder, a character I have missed with so many favourite authors and series in my favourite genre of action thrillers I had fallen behind.

So a good time to set things right and try my best to start catching up, now read here 4.5, also read number 5 in the series...Her Last Breath.

Next three in the series on my kindle, so 6 and 6.5 and 7.

A nice short story read in one morning, a holiday, what's a holiday to a policewoman?

It’s autumn in Painters Mill, and Chief of Police Kate Burkholder and John Tomasetti are taking a much-needed vacation at a small bed and breakfast an hour outside of town. They discover long-buried secrets—and unravel a mystery with an unexpected outcome.

A light , entertaining story, which does give more time to their relationship.

Four stars, I could see all the lovely autumn colours in my head.

This is a short story set between books 4 and 5 of the Kate Burkholder series. Kate and John decide to take a couple of days off and head to a B and B for a romantic getaway. Of course we all know that things aren't going to go quite as planned. Kate and John learn about the mysterious disappearance 22 years ago of one of the B and B's guests, and though they are both resolute about leaving it be and enjoying their time off, they just can't help themselves and eventually begin to investigate. I enjoyed the story, but I did figure the mystery out right away, and I'm pretty sure the police would have too, instead of it going cold for 22 years. Of course one of the characters in the book does call the local police a bunch of Barney Fifes so there is that.

I really like the books by Linda Castillo about Kate Burkholder. I was happily surprised when I found some of these shorter books. She gets a lot of story into 90 minutes! These are perfect to listen to while I'm waiting for the longer books.

Quick like a bunny, this little ditty about Painters Mill’s Chief of Police Kate Burkholder and Ohio BCA agent, John Tomasetti, who sneak away together for a little, uhm hum. It is supposed to be a weekend get-away at a B&B.

Well, we all know that Kate was raised Amish and ran away at 18, so she overhears the B&B owners talking (they were Amish too and now they aren’t either). And so you know whats going to happen now, right?

Yeah, their weekend getaway is just POOF! Taken over by a missing person case that is 20 years old! And you know, nobody has been able to solve it, but now that Kate and Tomasetti are there, why don’t you worry about it…

What’s that you say? What happened?

Well, you will have to get this .5 book (about an hour’s read) and find out! It’s a fun little read about 3.5 or so stars!

Happy Reading!

This was a great short story within the Kate Burkholder Series. Missing, was the gritty and often gruesome details surrounding most of Kate's cases. I liked the change and I really liked the sweet and happy ending to Kate and Tomasetti's unexpected mystery.

As Kate Burkholder and John Tomasetti drove toward their destination – a small bed and breakfast in a quiet and peaceful area not far from town – Kate was feeling a little uncertain. She and Tomasetti had had a close relationship for the past three years, they were work mates, friends and lovers, but this was taking things a step further. She didn’t want anything to damage the closeness they both had with each other.

But on arrival at the B&B, they both relaxed when they were greeted by the friendly couple who ran the accommodation – the offer of cider was gratefully accepted, and gradually they let their guards down. On hearing the two of them were police officers, albeit on vacation, their hosts told them about a twenty-two year old case of a missing woman, Angela Blaine. She had been staying at the B&B when she vanished, and the guilt of not knowing was tearing them up.

Against their wishes but because they thought they could help, they decided to investigate; the secrets they found, the horror and violence which appeared to have encompassed the Amish community all those years ago made them realize they definitely had a mystery on their hands. What would they discover? The one person everyone believed to be guilty; was he?

What a great short story by the wonderful storyteller, Linda Castillo. I have only recently found this author, and I will be looking for more of her work. Even though this was only a novella, the mystery was all there, and the twist at the end of the book was brilliant! I definitely didn’t see that coming. Highly recommended.

I'm not a huge fan of short stories-they're over before you can even really care about what's going to happen. This book was fine, but I would have preferred if there was more Kate and Tomasetti and zero crime solving. Also, I noticed a major error in the book. It said they've known each other three years, but in the last book which took place last summer in the plot line, they had known each other a year. Also, this book stated it was three years ago what happened to John's family when in the last book, it had said it had been three years since that happened. There was also a major inconsistency pertaining to a conversation they had in the last book and a conversation in this book (won't detail as to not spoil anyone). It almost felt like someone else other than the author wrote this book.

Even on vacation, Chief Kate catches a case!

Though in short story form, Long Lost maintains the series’ insights into Amish life. In this tale of a troubled young woman long vanished from her community, Kate Burkholder does what she does best: follows her instincts and uses her knowledge of the Plain world to mine information from the locals. Short and sweet, there is nothing slight about this entry in the series. Gives you a fully formed narrative at a clipped length to be devoured in a day.

I am not a fan of half books. I find that this new fangled gimmick is a either a way for an author to test the waters to see if they can bypass publishers or a keep their readers baited until they are ready to reel them in with their next book, either way, they rarely offer anything of any importance to the ongoing plotlines or character development.

That being said, Long Lost was a simple diversion while I was waiting between appointments. The plotline did not enhance or distract from the current Kate and Tomasetti storyline that the regular books have been following, it was just a side note involving a weekend away. A weekend that involved a bed and breakfast and an apparent haunting involving a missing woman that wandered away one day and was never seen again.

If you know Kate and Tomasetti, you know that they are just not the types to let a missing person case go unnoticed so they take a quick trip and check out what people remember. Ask a question or two and following a lead, they are lead down a dirt road to an answer that neither one was expecting.

As I said, this was a diversion between appointments and I actually liked how the story unfolded. Since Linda Castillo is one of my go to authors, I went against my usual response of avoiding these half books and was glad that I had spent a couple of minutes reading.

This is a short story in the Kate Burkholder series. Even though I don't usually care for the mini additions to the series' that I like, I still read them. It was a nice surprise that I liked this one. It was the perfect short story. What I enjoyed the most was that it highlighted the characters and gave some back story to their relationship and their commitment not only to their careers, but to each other.
