The Devil's Advocate

Rate this book
Dahlia Clark is a Hell Broker. You want to sell your soul, she’s your girl.
The only problem? She’s not seen her boss, Luc, in over two centuries.
Not since he forced her out of hell, out of his bed and condemned her to be his eyes and ears on the surface.
As far as breakups go, it could have been better!

When Dahlia meets Samuel Rose, a male incubus with the London Underground scene wrapped around his finger, things are looking up in the romance department.
At least she can dust off a few of those cobwebs.

Wrong.
Lucifer doesn’t like it when people play with his things.
It doesn’t matter that he dumped her over two hundred years ago. The Devil wants Dahlia back, whatever the cost.

Thank you to Michaela Haze for sending me an E-Book format ARC if this book for an honest review! I really enjoyed this book!

The first thing that I want to concentrate on is the world building. Without a doubt, THE WORLD BUILDING WAS REALLY GOOD. There was a lot to take in, but there were never huge info dumps, which was brilliant.

And the world was actually super interesting. The book was also really fast paced, or I found so anyways, and then all these things combined to make the book really east to get into. I think that on the first day of starting this I was already 50% done??? Like,,, it was just really easy to get into and just kept going at a really good pace.

At first I had mixed opinions about the main character. I thought that she was so kick-ass and brilliant in the beginning and I loved her sass, but then she was upset and talking about her shoes a lot?? I mean, damn, she must have looked fabulous, but she—for a while— just talks about how she was sad and her shoes and I count fully grasp her emotions sometimes.

BUT LUIZ. HE WAS SUPER FUNNY AND ONE OF MY FAVOURITE CHARACTERS. He’s the MC’s assistant / hellhound and just doesn’t care. He was great from the start, but his personality GREW a lot, and he became really fabulous about half way through the book.
All the side characters were SO well developed. I’m only realising JUST NOW how many characters they were and they were all REALLY well developed. They had really strong personalities and that was brilliant.

The book actually had a lot of humour too. . . WHICH I WAS NOT EXPECTING and there was a lot of sarcasm #MyNativeTongue and that really cam though in the writing.

There were so many plot twists, which made it really interesting, I think that there were a few super big plot twists, however I did think that one of them was sort of predictable close up to the event. Apart from that, the book kept on surprising me and was just generally mysterious. IT WENT IN A TOTALLY DIFFERENT DIRECTION TO WHAT I THOUGHT. WHICH WAS GREAT.

Watch me as I say super vague things to make you want to read this book ^^^

OKAY, THERE WAS A LOT OF VIOLENCE. I LOVE VIOLENCE IN BOOKS. It made my black, stubby heart very happy and I just,,, Every time that someone I liked did something kick-ass-violent I was happy. I was happy a lot. Which is not natural since I am Empress of the Galaxies and feel no emotion apart from anger.

And literally ALL OF THE CHARACTERS WERE MORALLY GREY AND THAT WAS SUPERB. You should know by now that I love a morally grey character, and then BAM a book filled with them??? YES PLS. And, the society that was involved had so many secrets which made it super interesting. However, I didn’t get extremely emotionally invested??? I liked everyone just fine, but it wasn’t like my heart broke for the characters.

The main relationship wasn’t a mega-ship for me. I don’t know what it was, but I could commit to it. I felt that it was a bit toxic???, and that the characters were too dependant on the relationship and feeling wanted by the other a bit?? Idk,,, there was just something about it that didn’t feel greaaaatt.

Also, the book was RATHER SEXUAL SO. . . I wouldn’t recommend this if you aren’t comfortable reading about those sort of things. That aspect leads me to say that this is much more an “adult” book than “YA”.
I wasn’t fully consumed by this book, like I sometimes am by others, however, the writing style was super nice, and in a style that made it really easy to read, and I’m glad that I read it!

I’m realizing the order now. I felt sorry for Sam and Nora, Dahlia and Luc really didn’t give a damn about anyone but themselves, so unsurprised how things turned out. Dahlia’s jealousy and desperation got annoying, but I did stay up late to read. Curious what’s going to happen next.

"I want you to kill them." He stated slowly.
My painted lips twitched into a smirk. "Finally, Mr Parr, we are getting somewhere."

The Devil's Advocate follows the life of Dahlia Clark. She's a Pureblood, connected to Lucifer, his mate. Though some time ago Lucifer kicked her out of Hell and now she's working as a broker in Earth.
Dahlia meets Samuel Rose, an Incubus, a sex daemon. She breaks all her connections to Hell every time she's meeting with Samuel so that he thinks her as a human. They meet each others in several occasions but is Samuel the one he claims to be or something totally different? Is there a reason for Dahlia's dismissal from Hell?
From the beginning of the book I hard a hard time getting into this. It wasn't exactly what I thought it to be, honestly it was something completely different. First of all I didn't actually think it as a erotic story at all but I think that's totally on me. Though I do not have problems with erotica, in this book it was problematic. I was grinning a lot during those parts and it wasn't something that's okay. Yeah, I know that Lucifer is the Devil himself and they all are creatures from Hell but I still think it was more abusive than actual sex. It was just hard for me to read, that's all.

Usually I feel it easier to connect with the MC when a book is written in first person. But not with Dahlia. There's something about her that's still bugging me, I just can't put my finger on it. But she did have some good parts in her too! I absolutely loved how there was a maternal part in her too, though she doesn't really strike as a mom person at first at all.

Originally I thought to rate this with 2 stars only because all the grinning and hard parts, but as I was getting closer to the end and everything started to reveal, I quite enjoyed reading! It was totally something I wasn't expecting at first and it was a great plot twist and upped the rating to 2,5 stars.
Even though I liked the ending of the book, I still can't really say that I'd recommend it to anyone. But in case you like BDSM, this is a book for you. Otherwise, I don't think the twist and action at the end of the book is worth of your time.

I received an email asking if I would be interested in reviewing this book. After reading the synopsis I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy this book. I wondered if it would be able to keep my interest.

It turned out to be a DELIGHTFUL SURPRISE. The book delivered on every level. I was left intrigued and wanting for more. I never thought that I would have enjoyed it as much as I did.

I became engrossed, captivated, intrigued with Dahlia and YES must I say Lucifer.

You would have thought the devil has a romantic side. Who would think that the devil had a heart… Who would think that the devil gets nervous or worried about prophecies… Who would think that he would fall in love… Well this devil (Luc) does...

Luc (the devil) is feared by so many, except the strong and fierce Dahlia.

Dahlia’s heart only belonged to one man. Although it seemed that she was trying to move on from Luc, her actions proved different. The more she did, the more she was drawn closer to him. Dahlia was strong (bad ass), but weak and vulnerable at times.

This book was well written with an intriguing storyline. The only thing is, this book is a standalone book and it left me with a lot of questions. ????????????????????????????? A lot of questions. What is the outcome of the spell?????????????????? So many questions without answers. I hope there will be a follow up. That’s how captivated I am.

If you are a paranormal fan I would say this is a MUST READ.

This book is exactly the reason why I have no longer been accepting review requests from authors. I just almost never enjoy the books, which proves that many authors do not actually seem to read my review policy. (It may be my fault, too, for accepting the requests. But shh!) Author Michaela Haze requested for me to read and review this book for her, and under the influence that it was young adult, I accepted. Big mistake.

I have literally NO IDEA what this book was, but all I know is that it was all of the genres I don't read mixed into one. (Why did I even accept this, again?) It was written for adults, it had elements of fantasy, and even a bit of erotica (ew!). These authors do not seem to understand that I am a teen in high school- I really should not be subjected to this stuff!

Typically in the third paragraph of my reviews I write up a brief synopsis of the book, but since I didn't understand it, I will be passing on that for today. If you are (somehow) captivated in seeing what the book is about after reading my review, then by all means, check it out above or on Goodreads.

First, I want to talk about the characters. The protagonist's name was Dahlia, and she was very forgettable and dull. She never seemed eager to make decisions by herself and always relied on others to make them for her, which was a definite turn-off for me. The other characters as well had no depth to them- there was literally nothing in terms of the characters for me to relate to.

Next up, the storyline. For me, unfortunately, none of the puzzle pieces really fit. The storyline got VERY sexual WAY too quickly- as I said before, I am way too young for this stuff- and it dealt with pregnancy as well, which is definitely a sensitive topic. I was mislead by the blurb; I didn't expect any of this to be involved. Overall, I was ultimately very confused about how everything came together.

The one perk about this book was the fact that it was written beautifully, but pushing that aside, I'm afraid I have to say that this book didn't work for me at all. I sure won't be recommending this to teens because I don't think this is even supposed to be a young adult novel, but I guess this can appeal more to older readers who are more into fantasy. I usually have a hard time with this genre as it stands, and adding in mature themes makes it ten times worse for me. I'm sure The Devil's Advocate is objectively a great book, but it's just not the type of story I should be exposed to as a teenager.

Amount of sex 2.5 / 5
How explicit 2.5 / 5
Story 5 / 5
Overall: 5 / 5

I have read a lot of dark romances lately and was craving a good paranormal romance. Sometimes it can be hard to find one that is both unique as well as steamy. Many paranormal romances follow a cookie cutter storyline, but not in this case! The Devil’s Advocate by Michaela Haze is riveting and the characters are well developed and completely panty melting!

The Devil’s Advocate is broken up into three parts. First, when Dahlia was in the human world. Second, when she was brought back to Hell, and the third... you’ll just have to read to find out.

By the way, the story does end with a cliffhanger but don’t fret as the second book, The Devil’s Lullaby should be out the first week of December! Yeah!

Love it and can't wait for the next in the series!

Being Queen of Hell Isn’t All It’s Cracked Up To Be

I decided to read this book after reading Red City, a more recently written book, as I wanted to know more about the world in which it was set.

This author has a great imagination, with some decidedly dark turns to it. This book is probably not for people of slightly nervous constitutions, or probably around meal times. We are talking about demons here and they author doesn’t shy away from the basic evil of them as a species, though she does imbue them with more human emotions too, that are quite a lot less evil, such as love and loyalty.

Two hundred years ago Lucifer banished his consort, Dahlia, to the human realm. He gave no explanation why, after more than a millennia together, he cast her out. She has been working as his broker with humans ever since because he can only come to the human realm for 66 minutes and 6 seconds each day. Though Dahlia is banished from hell she is still fed by it and is infinitely more strong than many other demons and than all daemons (humans changed by demon blood and sin into immortals that need to feed on sins directly created by humans). Dahlia is still devastated at the loss of Lucifer and hates him for casting her out at the same time as longing for him.

This author conveys loss and longing so brilliantly you can understand how someone who has been betrayed can still want the person who betrayed them. Lucifer’s motives are unclear almost until the end of the book and following Dahlia’s confusion and reactions to his actions leaves you at as much of a loss as she is.

For a demon queen, Dahlia is a very sympathetic character. This is probably because she doesn’t come across as outright evil. She appears to have a little empathy, which is surprising.

The plot is complex and compelling and draws you in. I devoured the book as the story was excellent. I will say though that there are lot of typos and grammatical problems in the book. I don’t think I noticed this problem in Red City, so it may be that because this was an early book there wasn’t enough money for an editor. It’s only a little distracting, but I know someone people hate books like that so I wanted to give the information in case it’s important. I think it would be a shame if this put you off, because it’s an imaginative and interesting novel.

I was hoping for some change in the Devil or showing how she overcame his abuse, but... I'm seeing that we are going to forgive him because *insert some reason to make her stronger* and I'm not here for that. I'd also like to understand WHY she loves him because I'm seeing any reason.

This was an interesting story. I have to say that I did not really see Luc acting the way he did. It surprised me in a good way. Full review to come!

description

❝ I had never been human. I was born from Sin.

Lucifer took the wisps of the first betrayal of man and weaved them into my being. I became part of the fabric of Hell. I became an extension of the Devil.❞

First of all, many thanks to the author, Michaela Haze, for giving me an ARC of The Devil's Advocate!

The Devil's Advocate is a dark adult romance with elements of BDSM. Dahlia is a broker that makes deals in exchange for people's souls. Nothing too unusual except that her boss, Lucifer, is also her ex. They haven't seen each other in hundreds of years.

Dahlia seemed really stuck in the past. She was very serious and dedicated to her work. It was more like a way to distract herself from the heartbreak. At times it felt like her character was inconsistent because of the way she switched from very independent to completely feeling sorry for herself and obsessing over Lucifer when he couldn't care less about her.

❝ Lucifer was all that I had ever wanted, and I had obsessed over. Now that I was back in the First Circle, I had to question if I ever had the man at all.❞

I also wasn't too sure what to make of Lucifer and Dahlia's history/romance/relationship in the first part of the story because it seemed to be entirely based on the sexual attraction between them. It had a way of working itself into the story in ways that didn't really flow together. Dahlia could be thinking about something or see something that made her think of Lucifer and then suddenly she'd go off on a tangent about how great their sex was. I really wanted more of an emotional connection between them, which the book does kind of explore in the last part of the book.

I didn't really like them together at first because Lucifer seemed to think that he could make decisions for Dahlia and not have to explain himself to her. He still did that later on, but he tried to be more open with her. He did gradually change, which I liked.

I won't spoil the story, but I did like the way it unfolded. I'm glad that we did eventually get to meet Lucifer and that we learned more about him so that we could understand his actions.

I think the story had some flaws, but it was still pretty good. One drawback to the story being so short that it seemed really ambitious to tackles on all the issues between Dahlia and Lucifer in so short a time. Still, I think it was a great start and I enjoyed it overall.

The Devil's Advocate comes out on September 28th!

Rating and Review

Rating: 3.25 Stars

“Lucifer took the wisps of the first betrayal of man and weaved them into my being. I became part of the fabric of Hell. I became an extension of the Devil.”

This was a promising start to a series which I look forward to continuing. My only real issues were with 1) the grammar and spelling mistakes, which could be fixed with another round of editing, and 2) the FMC’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior were more often reminiscent of an adolescent/young-adult than a supposedly powerful demon over a millennia old.

“I could honestly say that his flaws enticed me and his madness fuelled mine.”

The book was average.. I have always liked Lucifer stories and this one is a little different. So, we have Dahlia who is Lucifer's pet.. yeah, actual Master-Servant thing.. Dahlia loves Luc but she thinks he dumped her.. But he does actually love her.. The whole story is around a prophecy related to Luc's child.. and the politics in Hell..

There are several things I did not like too.. There were some gaps in the story towards the end.. What happened to the angel who had entered the purgatory.. Nothing mentioned on the ones who hurt Dahlia...One of them was maybe justified, for the other there was no particular reason why revenge was needed.. Whats with Levi, he seemed all villainous, but apparently he did not do anything villainous..Maybe the other books can enlighten..

And last.."Even when he punished me for deceiving him, peeling off strip after strip of raw skin from my belly. Hanging the the flaccid damp flesh over my face. He would still touch my cheek with love" .. Oh my God.. This is like BDSM to the next level.. like "Hell" level.. I almost puked when I read the line..The rest of the book had mild sexual tones..

Overall, I would give 3.5 stars for this book. But since we have to round up, I am going to go to the lesser rating. 3 Stars

Oh, the fiery Hel she will unleash

I enjoy this world that the author creates in 'The Bleeders'. The world-building just gets better and better with each new book. Hellish characters that have this complex deeper side really makes for a story that is easy to want to explore. Love between the Devil and his consort can't be easy and the author gives us a story to show that it isn't. It's messing and hard; emotional and full of pain, but through it all . . . It's love and they have to fight to prove its worth it.

I definitely enjoyed this book. It was a well written, fantasy based world and the characters were all interesting. I could feel Dahlia's pain at having been thrown out of the only world she knew and being abruptly and unfeelingly thrown away by the only one she had ever loved for more years than I can imagine. I really wanted to know why and hoped for her sake she would be either taken back or at the very least be told why these things happened to her.

I'm not a huge paranormal reader, but Haze constructs a narrative here that's really engaging. I thoroughly enjoyed Dahlia's acerbic personality--despite writing in a fantastical genre with a story that's all but conventional, Haze manages to make you believe everything that's going on. Beautiful work!

It kept me reading until the very end because of its interesting premise but it took for a weird turn. Around halfway through, I realized it wasn't delivering to the expectation it set. I still enjoyed seeing how the plot unfolded, but there was a lack of character complexity and even chemistry between the couple. Also, the grammar and spelling errors? Cringe.

Almost I in absolute love? No. Am I intrigued enough to continue the series? Very much so. There are some significant typos which bug me (obv no one is perfect but I am a grammar/editing spaz), but the story itself is interesting. Dahlia and Luc and the world building of this first book are quite full, so I’m invested to see how it continues.

This was a tough series to read. It's not your typical spicy book, it's a torturous story of prolonged domestic abuse set in the backdrop of Hell. I would have liked more of the FMCs HEA, but we don't really get a glimpse of that until well into the third book. I persevered with this because I want to read the other books by this author that appear to be standalones in this shared universe. I'm hoping that a couple of the characters in this series make an appearance in later books.

This was an interesting romance. I don't think I've ever read something that had quite this take on hell and romance with the devil. I'll be reading the next book in the series to continue with Dahlias adventure

Queen of demons

Wow. What a powerful and beautiful journey this series was.
That ending blew me away.

One thing that always proves itself when stories are about the devil. He isn’t kind, he doesn’t know how to love and he really is insane lol

I may of read a lot of Micaelas books backwards and definitely not in order but no matter which books you start with they are all insanely brilliant and her writing is 10/10

“I plan to claim you. Mark you. Never again will you question my love and loyalty to you.”

You know, I wasn’t 100% sure what to expect when I picked up the Devil’s Advocate. I mean, it’s not everyday that you meet the woman who wants to buy your soul. Dahlia is one unique creature with an even more interesting job. As a Hell Broker, she is the eyes and ears for Luc; although it’s been more than two centuries since she’s seen him. Luc may have broken Dahlia’s heart, but he is never too far away. And when Samuel enters the picture, that just might be the push Luc needed to reclaim Dahlia for his own….

Overall, I thought this was a really intriguing book. I thought it was dark and really unique. I loved how original the story-line was and how the characters pulled you into their story. This book is dark and sexy with some surprising twists and an ending that leaves you begging for more.

I think this author has a ton of potential in the paranormal romance world and I look forward to seeing what she’s got in store for us next.

what?

So the evil nova has been a dark skin black woman this whole time? Is this white author crazy? Not only is Nova evil, she’s a r4p1st. Don’t read this. It took 600 pages for the main character to even realize she’s a victim of abuse & even longer to get over the guy that abused her. My main gripe is that the evil overlord was made a dark skin black woman & her victims are pale skin white people. This author is going to h ell.
