Such. Tension! Warfare picks up right where Huntress left off, and it was a totally epic ride from beginning to end!

While still making a pile of stupid mistakes plus some good calls (don’t we all?), Audrey continued to be relatable and entirely funny and self aware as she blunders and runs through her (after)life. Logan really shines in this one as he emerges from behind his grumpiness and we get to see more of who he really is underneath, and I actually really, really like him now! I love how he decides to stop being dumb about Audrey and is willing to fight and wait for her to be ready for him and his love—that is so sweet and right and I love him all the more for it. All their friends expand too and Hugo! I LOVED Hugo and his secret identity. 😎

There is much more action here then in Huntress and all the battles were written really, really well as I was on the edge of my seat for nearly all of them. Morgan is an interesting character, and my heart broke for poor Logan in his past with this guy and how it still affects him now. I also love how all the spiritual warfare was easy to relate to in my own life and how certain scenes reminded me to apply these truths to my life, especially the one with James and the Armor of God. Wow, what a POWERFUL scene.

And yet again I am SO GLAD to have the next book because how dare the author leave us like that?!?! (I pity all those who had to wait until Book 3 was released) But I’m ready to continue on this wild, crazy adventure with Audrey and Co!

Content: violence and blood (nothing over PG-13); kissing (semi detailed)

This book was incredible! Like I could say countless things about how powerful the conversations were between Audrey and Hugo as well as how…spicy (is that the right word for it?) things were between Audrey and Logan. Everything was so much more powerful than I expected, whether it was in a good or bad situation.

However, one thing I definitely want to say is that Audrey was VERY relatable. I was going through some struggles of my own and knowing what I was feeling lead to do, but wanting to against that feeling and do it anyway was something I could relate to. Never a good idea to go against! So thankful that the author really showed the powerful love God has for us even when we make mistakes and feel ashamed.

Can I take a moment to say the "bad guy" surprised me? Way to go in mixing things up when I had reasons why I thought the bad guy would be someone else!

Ooo also, can I take another moment to appreciate the excellent humor in this book, especially pertaining to the revealing of who Hugo and Joe are? Talk about priceless!

Definitely a fantastic read and one I would strongly recommend to YA readers, especially if you're looking for a "different" Christian read with romance.

Wow. I'm not even sure where to start on this book, especially without giving away spoilers! I continued to love Audrey as a protagonist. One of my favorite things about her is that she's humble enough to learn from her mistakes. Even though I get frustrated with her on occasion, it's never for long :) And Logan! *sigh* I appreciated that he opened up so much more in this book, and he definitely had a few swoon-worthy moments (maybe more than a few...). To summarize, Warfare had more of the amazing world-building, action, romantic tension, and spiritual insights that made me fall in love with Huntress. I just know the series conclusion is going to be epic!!

This was a great continuation! Warfare picks up a few months after Huntress and we see Audrey more comfortable in her new world with her friends and new trainer, Hugo. She soon learns that her family is the target of a Demonic operation and she’s willing to throw her new life away and defy the Heavens to save them. I really liked that there was a ton of character development and more action in this book, but the spirituality and religion were amped up. Since Logan has been on Earth, he’s more susceptible to temptation and Satan, which leads to his and Audrey’s relationship developing along with the empathy bond that they share. Julie continues to amaze me with the unique things that she throws into this series- Audrey’s Hair was like a mood ring that changed colors with her emotions and I found that one of the coolest things. This book was filled with action, betrayal, drama, twists and turns, and many times that I wanted to slap Audrey.

Warfare continues the story of 'hunter' Audrey as she adapts to her new heavenly world most often termed, 'the realm'. Audrey is also our first-person storyteller and we see the full gamut of emotions of this 19 year old discovering her new found powers. We spend much of this episode of the saga in the training rooms where Audrey is being mentored by a new coach, Hugo, who besides being an excellent trainer has a kindness, gentleness and wisdom that is beyond the norm.

It starts slowly until around the 25% mark when Audrey 'escapes' to earth to protect her family who are being attacked by demons. And this is where the action starts and it's easy to keep turning pages as the pace and incredibleness (?) of Hall's imagination comes to the fore. We have hunters who are turned by Satan, dragons that morph into demonic lords, hunters being able to be hurt but not killed by demons and some fabulous fighting scenes where one really feels like we're wielding the weapons.

Even though there are some 'overly-fantastic' imaginings of the supernatural world the strength of the spiritual messages don't get lost. Clearly Hall wants her readers to witness the grace of God and how He desires to equip us to partner in solving our battles.

A couple of areas I found a little comedic, the appearance of both the Holy Spirit and Jesus in different guises. I liked the notion of the Holy Spirit being tangibly present because it served to illustrate Hall's message of the equipping power of the Spirit in those who choose to believe and trust in Him.

One aspect I'd still like to better understand are the rules of the supernatural world. In the first book, I questioned the non-appearance of angels and in this book we see them appear and wow, what an impact they make. But it kinda didn't make sense - are they the last option if the hunters are unable to defeat the demonic threat?

I loved the illustration of the power of prayer in Audrey's brother - it's really powerful demonstration of how it impacts the demonic and draws the power of God in all its glory. Further, I like the picture of heaven being a better version of earth as in the renewal of all things in Revelation. Good on Hall for stretching the imaginings of heaven - we must remember this is a fictional account.

The Audrey and Logan romance continues to underpin the story and I'm enjoying seeing both their growing maturity and the passion they both have for each other and desire to be faithful to the law of 'bonding'.

And to Book 3 and a descent into the place no hunter is supposed to enter. Excited to dive in.

Warfare is the sequel to Huntress, so if you haven't read the first book, drop everything and grab a copy! You won't be disappointed. Huntress was an amazing read, so I've been super excited to get to Warfare. I've gotta say, it was just as good as Huntress and... dare I say it?... maybe even a little better... It seemed to have more of everything, as crazy as that sounds. More action, more intrigue, more danger, more fight scenes, more spiritual growth, more romance, more humor. And as with the first book, I was completely and totally drawn into it's sequel. Everything else disappeared except for this book, this world, these characters.

When Audrey's family is targeted by an unprecedented level of demon attacks, she will do anything, defy authority and friends, to help them. I completely felt Audrey's panic and fear for her family, but, my goodness, she is so stubborn! There were quite a few times I wanted to reach through the book and shake some sense into her! But I could definitely see how much she's grown from the previous book. More of Logan's past was revealed, which explained a lot about why he acted the way he did. One of my favorite characters in Warfare had to be Audrey's new mentor, Hugo. He's warm and inviting and kind, but with an unwavering air of authority about him. I really enjoyed all of his sage advice and wisdom.

There were some shocking twists and turns and reveals, some where I thought my jaw was gonna hit the floor. There was, also, a great lesson about putting all your faith and trust in God and not yourself. One of my favorite aspects of this series is the friendships. Even though they were tested quite a bit in Warfare, they were genuine and real, so great to read about.

Warfare was a fantastic book that I had a hard time putting down. And that ending... oh my!... Book three can't come out soon enough!

Memorable Quotes:

“He never leaves us or forsakes us. His Spirit goes with us, Audrey, and if we are sensitive to His presence, we’ll hear what we need to hear.”

“God can do amazing things, even with faith the size of a mustard seed.”

“...though your path may seem hard at times, it brings the greatest reward. Some may choose to take what appears to be the easy way, but in the end they’ve only hurt themselves. The Father cares for you deeply, and although you will face challenges, it is in the furnace that your character will be refined.”

“No matter what happens, remember the Father works all things to good. Never forget that.”

This sequel was just so beautifully written! This one was even better than the first. It just captivated me from beginning to end and I just found it literally painful to put it down.

It starts a few months after the first book ended and you can see that Audrey is getting more comfortable with her self, this new world, and her skills. I loved her intriguing new teacher Hugo and had fun unraveling the mystery surrounding him.

Although Audrey’s impulsiveness utterly drove me crazy in this one and I felt it was selfish the way she handled so many things. I literally wanted to reach through the pages and throttle her! I definitely think there were so many different routes she could have taken besides the ones she did. I understand her frustration but doing what she did so hastily was just ridiculous and really showed her age. I could already tell it was just going to make things worse *sigh* and of course when it inevitably happened, I just didn’t feel sorry for her and just rolled my eyes. And then at the end: I wanted to smack her again! She finally gets the answers and resolution she’s been begging for and then just stomps on it. She is just crazy and flat out blind! Yep and there went more throttling through the pages. At least she HOPEFULLY came around at the very very end. I love the girl but she kills me and brings out way too many frustrated emotions out of me 😂

And seriously, I can’t be the only one that pictured Morgan as Hook from Once Upon a Time right? I could even hear his voice as he spoke 😂

So let’s talk as much about that ending as I can without giving away spoilers. So like a big baby, I found myself bawling during that final battle. And then the ending: NOOOOOOO!!! How could that have happened with my favorite character? Nope: I’m in denial. I saw the signs but hoped I was wrong and now I’m sulking. I absolutely loved all the twists and turns, including the identities of a couple of characters. I had it right on one of them but the other one I was way off. They definitely keep me on my toes.

So I am going to take back what I said in my review from the first book. I was so upset that I waited so long to start this series but now I realize I should have waited a few days longer! At least I only have to wait 4 more days for the final one, with only the novella “Logan” to keep me afloat until then. I may still cry myself to sleep for 4 more days, as I wait on what I’m sure will feel like an eternity from now 😂

When I first read the summary and saw that Audrey will go on a mission to Earth to protect her family, I was drawn in. However, the story starts out slower than I anticipated and once Audrey learns about her family being in danger she DOES go to help her family, against orders from Heaven. It's really creative how the author describes demonic battles with the hunters.

There is one character, a hunter, whom I had suspicions with in this book. Turns out he is a traitor and I really hope he gets dealt with. Morgan also surprised me in this book in the way he helps out, I have hope he will find his way back to God where he belongs.

Hugo is my favorite character and it turns out he is someone very special.

"I stared dumbfounded at the vision in front of me. Perhaps someday the unexpected wouldn't throw me so much.
Today was obviously not that day."

Logan and Audrey are left alone on Earth after he "rescues" her from a situation. Things heat up between them and I didn't like that for the story. It turns out the longer a hunter is on Earth, the less connected they are to God making them prone to temptation. Nothing happens sexually, but the kissing gets intense. I'm glad Audrey and Logan have a future together as a couple and as a team, but that part of the story didn't feel right to me.

I'm not sure I'll be reading Book 3. Hall is very creative writing supernatural situations, and it's so heartfelt/tangible/even sweet, but the back and forth between Logan and Audrey got old quickly with me. Audrey's hair turning different colors based on her emotions is the most interesting part of the story for me. I liked Book 1 best.

I recommend Tabitha Caplinger's Chronicles of the Three trilogy if you like stories fighting demons.

Me encantó demasiado.

Absolutely fabulous book! Oh my goodness... where do I even start? This is the second book in the Life After series, so if you've not yet read Huntress, stop here and go pick it up. This book is a young adult, fantasy-ish book. I say "ish" because most of the fantasy is faith (Christianity) based. Angels, demons, kick butt angelfire weapons, and power of prayer type stuff. Not in your face, but present. If that's not your thing, this might not be the book for you. However, the book is fabulous. This is not really a genre I'd read before this series, but I cannot wait for the next book. It literally gave me goosebumps and spine tingles more than once. The characters grow and develop so much in this book. Some of my major questions from the first book were answered in this book. The characters are relatable and realistic (even if I want to yell at them sometimes). The world building and description in this book are absolutely bomb dot com (do people still say that? No? Didn't think so. Oh well.) Julie paints such an amazing picture that it is so easy to become engrossed in the world she describes (or should I say realm?). Overall, 5 stars - amazing book - definitely recommend it!

Boom! Talk about exciting change of pace! Warfare does take a more religious approach to things which is what I was concerned about. However, it's different! I actually appreciated the fact that, although it's there, you don't necessarily feel like it's totally up in your face.

I love how the story for more complicated and conflicted. It brought such an enthusiastic flare that I'm not even annoyed about the religious stuff. There is definitely some angsty teen styled drama presented but it's not over dramatic like you oftentimes find in YA. All in all, this doesn't feel like a middle book which is super impressive and I'm totally just binging this series.

Incredibally well written. Amazing story that pulls you in and leaves you with a book hangover :). Amazing depth in the characters. The ending wasn't a huge cliffhanger, it leaves you wanting more but doesn't do it so abruptly it is irritating.
Julie's books are sooooo refreshing. I take from the advice given to Audrey, which is why I love these books.
I love the romance in books, but I usually skip the sex scenes. Thank heavens I dont have to skip huge portions in this series.
All in all- it's an amazing series.

I get very tired of the YA trope where the main character has to act really stupid in order for the plot to work. The only reason I didn't downgrade the book to three stars because of the annoying stupidity is that it was eventually overshadowed by the truly awesome visuals of spiritual warfare playing out.

For me, this was the most epic one, since Audrey had to train a lot at first, it wouldn’t make sense to let her deal with demons the entire first book. In this book there is more action. I have to say that this is one of the few books where I don’t find the “being clueless” factor annoying. It’s more a sort of a blunt “act first, think later” kind of thing than thinking through every detail that is given. Since I do think every detail through, it was a surprise for me just how clueless Audrey was at times and to my own surprise that just made me laugh! I think that’s because it fits her character so well, but that’s just a guess. This book had some hilarious parts that had me curling up in silence completely so as to not wake up anyone (it was night at the time). But they were hilarious.

YASSS!!!

I'm a huge paranormal romance adventure , mythology scifi nerd. So when I first started this series I was afraid it will be too "goody goody". I've actually come to love this series.

It's funny, because I had/have a really hard time liking Audrey. I find her to be annoyingly hit headed and prideful. But it really highlights the amazing nature of God.

What a surprise to find my self tearing over God's interactions with Audrey. To feel the lessons being taught to her leak down into my own messy self.

The romance between Logan and Audrey is not just a watered down -elementary story. No there's still a sweet smoky heat that keeps me rooting for them.

Julie hall you've truly done something special.

...”though your path may seem hard at times, it brings the greatest reward. Some may choose to take what appears to be the easy way, but in the end they’ve only hurt themselves.”

Audrey is settling into her new life under the tutelage of her quirky new mentor, Hugh. With her skills as a demon hunter almost complete and a possible new boyfriend in tow, Audrey should be on top of the world. So why can’t she stop thinking about Logan?

When Audrey learns that her family is the target of an unprecedented demonic attack, she goes against orders and sets out to rescue them, not realising that she’s falling straight into Satan’s hands.

Warfare is the second compelling instalment of the After Life series and picks up a couple of months after the events of Huntress. Audrey’s skills a a demon hunter as well as her confidence has grown in leaps and bounds under Hugo’s tutelage. I suspected that there was more to Hugo than Audrey realised and couldn’t wait for the penny to drop.

Audrey’s reckless impulsive nature, while frustrating at times was understandable. However, I felt that spiritually she has come along way as was apparent in her confrontation with Satan.

Morgan was a welcome intriguing addition and I hope he’ll play a bigger role in the next instalment as I have a sense that he’s not beyond redemption. Through Morgan, we also gain insight into Logan’s troubled past which I found interesting. I had my suspicions about the mole that was reporting back to Satan and was surprised when it transpired that it was someone else.

The world building throughout has been exceptional. The battle between the hunters and demons was impressive. The scene depicting the power of prayer when Audrey’s family are in despair was my favourite as are the interactions between Audrey and God.

The books ends on a cliffhanger which I’m looking forward to unraveling in the third instalment, Dominion.

I received a free advanced audible copy of Huntress read by Vanessa Moran and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

Warfare is the perfect sequel to Huntress, and is just as captivating as the first book! I was so engaged in the story and I can’t believe how quickly I finished it. There was so much more action and intense drama throughout, and a twist that I did not see coming! The characters developed so much in this book, and they brought out a range of emotions in me at all times. Awkward Audrey becomes better skilled in the combat arena, resulting in more confidence in herself. She gets a new trainer/mentor, who reminds me of a mashup of Yoda and Mr. Miyagi, and the conversations they share are powerful and thought provoking, and at times, quite humorous. He chooses not to reveal himself to the others and her friends tease her about the new mystery trainer, and what a surprise when they finally meet him! There’s a big reveal of another character whom we briefly met in book one and I imagine this character will be present more in the third book. There’s more wit and banter between the characters, resulting in more laugh out loud moments.

There’s definitely more religion in this book. Being a Christian myself, this did not bother me at all. I quite enjoyed it, though I can see where it might make some uncomfortable. Also, if you’re a Christian some of the ideas in this series are not going to sit well with you. For instance, I personally believe that everything that unfolds in regards to the hunters and their relationships with God will take place in a person’s life before their death, not after. Again, I am taking this series for what it is—a work of fiction and fantasy. And I’m enjoying it very much!

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am eagerly anticipating book three. But first, there’s a companion novella, book 2.5 entitled Logan, that I’m going to start next. I can’t wait to read more of his story!

More awesomeness!

I didn’t think that the second book in this series could get any more awesome than the first one but this one far surpasses it. Audrey gets stronger as she trains under her new mentor and she has to be stronger in order to face what is to come-the battle against the forces of evil trying to overtake her earth family. The epic battle was so well described by Ms Hall that I could imagine myself become a part of it. I could feel the heartache Audrey felt for those who suffered great injuries. She doesn’t see how much stronger she has become until she is able to step back during a lull and realize the countless number of demons she has destroyed. Then the panic as she witnessed her mother lose faith such that the protective barrier around her home started to crumble. Then her awe as she saw the spiritual strength of her brother uplift when no one else could. It brought tears to my eyes. My review here does not do justice to this awesome book! My only hope is that you as a reader will take up this book and see for yourselves just how awesome it is.

⛰ What It's About

It has been a long while since the last time Audrey interacted with Logan after she switched mentor. To distract herself from her feelings (even though she was too stupid to admit this), she used Jonathon as a placeholder and distraction. One days, Audrey’s family’s life were in danger, so she just screw the rules that forbid her from helping her family, and decided to do just that. When she got to Earth, all the demons were immediately attracted to her and she was kidnapped by a handsome dude named Morgan who was riding a dragon. But of course Logan could easily find her and of course Morgan was the bad guy who tried to make her join the dark side. Turned out, it was satan’s plan all along to disturb her family in order to get to her.

Audrey refused to leave her family alone, until her friend, Alrik brought the news that no other hunter would help to protect her family unless she returned with Logan and get some rest. Days past and there was nothing interesting until Alrik brought the news that her family’s house was surrounded by hundreds of demons and they were waiting for something bad to happen to “feast” upon her family.

Her family’s faith has been tried lots of times with her death, the debts that kept on coming, and now, her grandpa (Ramona’s husband) got into an accident. It cracked the shield that protect their house and the demons just couldn't wait to get their claws on her family so she and her friends had to battle the demons to protect them. They were far too outnumbered and Logan and Kaitlin was already down. Strangely, Morgan tried to save Kaitlin from danger. But of course they won the battle when Audrey’s brother invited his mother to pray together and the shield was back up.

After some rest days, Logan and Audrey decided to admit their feelings to each other. Logan decided to kiss her and created a bond with her. Too stupid to realize earlier what does the kiss meant, Audrey answered the kiss with passion until she realized that they were now bonded for eternity and then she got mad... She trashed the gym room until she got a news that Logan had been kidnapped by Alrik and brought to Hell.

🧠 Thoughts

I would love this book more, if only the main character is not Audrey (or someone with Audrey’s character). She was stupid (but thought she was the most righteous person in the planet), stubborn, envious, and annoying, and I don't understand why these guys, even Satan were chasing after here. From my perspective, she got nothing to offer except problems. I prefer if Kaitlin is the main character rather than her.

This is a thoroughly captivating book, and I was not expecting some of the turns it took! Well-written and developed, this Christian fantasy world, whose characters almost seem too real, also contains humor that often made me laugh out loud. My favorite lines are: “The more you know of Him, the more you will be able to see the way He does, and the more you will be able to hear His voice above the throngs.” And: “The gentle whispering of His truth in your ears and heart, comes with knowing Him.” And: “God was big enough to take care of a situation I obviously was not capable of doing anything about.” But there are so many, many more!! This author writes books that not only encourage and entertain with the afterlife her imagination has created, but they also cause me to pause and think. I always want “to read ahead in the story.” But “I’m sorry to say you’re going to have to take this one a page at a time” or one book at a time! I already can NOT WAIT for the next of these stories!!!! I read this early as an ARC copy and have freely chosen to leave my own honest review.

The writing isn't the highest-quality I've ever read in my life.

Some humor is a bit forced, some parts are a bit cliche.

But the spiritual content was so powerful and beautiful and amazing that I love this book anyway. I can't even explain what I felt when I read that one climactic scene - it must have been God through the book, working in me, because I KNEW the power of prayer and I felt so much hope and joy and peace at that moment. I don't even care that this book isn't theologically correct at all, because the roots of it are sound and true, the light vs. dark, God's mighty power, and it gave me chills. This is the God we serve, and even the most awful darkness stands no chance against His powerful light.

So thank you, Julie, for somehow portraying that in the most incredible way. During those spiritual scenes, your writing has God's power in it.

[not to mention that the entire book just sucked me in and kept me turning pages the whole time. mostly because of the torture that was Audrey and Logan's relationship the whole time. I can't wait for the next book!]

Interesting ideas in this series! Enjoy the whole angels versus demons scenario, and needing to train to fight those demons, so they don’t take over the world. In this one, Audrey is training when she learns that evil is targeting her family, so she sets out to help them without putting much thought into it. Audrey’s act now think later mentality does get rather annoying. The big evil is trying to get Audrey, so he’s using her family to lure her in to his way of things. Also, there is some really annoying stuff with Audrey leading Jonathan on when she knows she really wants Logan; she acts like she didn’t know she was leading Jonathan on, which really put her in a negative light for me. This scenario made her come across as so selfish and rude, or if she really was so oblivious, then maybe she’s just lacking in the brains and common sense department. I’m having a difficult time not getting so frustrated by Audrey’s character, but the story is an entertaining one. Interested in seeing where this story goes.

Warfare is a great continuation of Huntress. It picks up where Huntress left off and answers the questions book 1 left you with. That being said Warfare then leaves you with a whole new slew of questions. I love the characters growth and relationship developments through out the book. At times I became frustrated with Audrey and Logan but I loved getting those glimpses into Logan's character since he was such a closed book in Huntress. Julie definitely knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat with the twists, turns, surprises, humor, secrets, betrayal and heartbreak expertly woven in this story. Audrey has obstacles she must overcome, like her Faith and trust in the Creator and those closest to her. Hopefully book 3 will answer all the questions and tie up all the loose ends. This is a great YA religious fantasy that will leave you with a book hangover and wanting more. Can't wait for book 3.
