This was a LibraryThing.com win for me, and I read it the day it arrived in the mail (today!). And I am sure I'll read it many times over again when looking for something simple, attractive, and healthy to make. I know I'll be trying Joanne's Refrigerator Dill Pickles as I'm always on a quest for the perfect dill. Also am intrigued by the Maryland Crab Cakes and Spanakopita Rolls. The dinner rolls and all of the soups sound amazing, as does the Thai Crunch Salad with Peanut dressing.

These are things I usually let someone else make for me, but Segal makes them look so easy. I will update this review as I try some of the recipes. (Haha, we'll see!)

With more folks returning back to offices and kids back to school, simpler meals are back on the table. Sourdough, no! Lasagna Soup with Ricotta Cream, yes! While a majority of the recipe are designed for weeknight preparation, there are 30 designed for more leisurely weekend brunches, family feasts, and lavish desserts. Things I really liked - a whole section devoted to meatballs, the cheater Ciabatta Pesto Pizza, and Make-Ahead/Freezer Friendly instructions for every recipe. While most of the recipes have a ring of familiarity, you'll be glad you're reminded. As for desserts? The Cherry Ricotta Cake using frozen cherries offers summertime flavor no matter the season. For home cooks looking for a little inspiration and flair with limited time to get dinner on the table.

In late 2018, I discovered this cookbook while shelving at the library. I checked it out, took it home, and made a few recipes. Shortly thereafter, I purchased it. It’s been one of my favorites to feature on the PWPL Secret Kitchens: Library Edition (by pure coincidence) because it’s one I use for so many of my go-to recipes.

The photography is engaging without being over-the-top or overpowering the recipes. Pictures can say 1,000 words, but the recipes need to also speak for themselves, which they do here. After the introduction, she shares about her kitchen and some of her top tool recommendations before leading into recipes. Recipes are organized into 9 chapters from the beginning of the meal to the end: from starters/snacks all the way to desserts and cocktails too. At the end of each food chapter, there’s a “pro tip from my kitchen” two-page spread.

Several recipes include “heads up,” “sourcing savvy,” and “pro tips” for either sourcing ingredients or prep to be done ahead of time (i.e. don’t wait until 30 minutes before dinner to start prepping your Grilled Buffalo Chicken Kebabs as they need to marinate for at least 6 hours and you should use chicken thighs for the best results.)

I haven’t cooked every recipe in this book yet, but the reason I highly recommend it is that several recipes are regular repeats in my rotation: the pizza crust from three-cheese white pizzas with arugula, Baja fish tacos, grilled buffalo chicken kebabs, buttermilk fried chicken tenders (I pair these with waffles), maple, coconut & blueberry granola, spinach & gruyere quiche, and basil pesto.

As I flip through, I see so many more recipes I want to try. This is a reliable resource at the ready. And my favorite library cookbook bonus: it’s available on hoopla, so no need to worry about spilling on the print copy while you’re cooking.

There are also more recipes available on her blog “Once Upon a Chef” including my favorite: restaurant-style salsa. Follow-up reading: her latest cookbook is Weeknight/Weekend, also available via PWPL, which came out in 2021.

I first found Jennifer Segal’s recipes on line and found every one was excellent. I’ve been cooking for many years, and stopped buying cooking books with all the great on line recipes, but I made exception for this book because of the quality, consistency, and ease of her recipes and the genuine warmth of her as a person that comes across in her writing. There are recipes in there for both entertaining and impressing your guests as well as everyday meals with your family. Plus, the photos are great, including the one on the dust cover. It’s so colorful and attractive I have it on a book stand on my kitchen counter. This book would make a nice gift for a friend or yourself.

I found Jenn Segal from Amazon Kindle Daily Deal. I don't care for ebook cookbooks so I passed but decided to check out her blog. OMG her recipes are fabulous!!!! The chocolate muffins are to die for. Deep rich chocolate flavor without being overly sweet. Those are my husband's favorite. He begs me to make those muffins. The blueberry muffins are mine. Overflowing with blueberries and unbelievably tastes just as good the next day. How many muffins taste just as good the next day? Hers do. Her recipes turn out EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. Nothing more disappointing than trying a new recipe and it either taste meh or it's a failure. This chick can cook! She can make you a rock star at meal time. Her Thai Crunch Salad with Peanut Dressing is another new family favorite. I loved her recipes so much I went back and bought the book in hardback. Check out her blog if your bookshelves are overflowing with unused cookbooks. Try a few recipes and then come back and buy the book.

I was going to tell people about the ingredients in her odd lasagna soup recipe
and what I did was look up the wrong book, it's her later book!

No wonder I couldn't find it once I did a recipe breakdown...

I didn't realize I rated this one, but didn't do a review....
and thank goodness I didn't do a recipe breakdown twice!

not every main dish stands out, but I think 70% of them are pretty good
and her desserts stand out a bit more too

This book would stand out for someone who does like cooking a lot for the family, because the core ingredients seem to be a very well chosen. So it's pretty involved cooking, but without 87 items in your kitchen to cook everything in this book.

I don't often rate cookbooks. I mean do you really read the entire book? But, this one? Yeah, I've pretty much read the entire book and made many, many recipes from it. It has become one of my go-to cookbooks when I need a quick dinner recipe that I know everyone will enjoy.

These recipes are not complex and most of the ingredients you'll have on hand. That's a definite plus as far as I'm concerned. Nutritionally, these are good, too. Jenn is a professional, culinary school-trained chef who has worked in fancy restaurants. Creating recipes is a passion for her and her recipes must pass several hurdles before they make it into her repertoire or cookbooks. Her inspiration comes from many different places. Her recipes are made from basic recipes that are well-tested and solid yet easily adapted. All of which I feel makes her recipes ideal for a busy family.

Really beautiful food photography, but not a cookbook for the cookbook obsessed. There are no recipes in here that you will not find elsewhere, and seasonings tend to be on the minimalist side (an "ancho brown sugar spice rub" is literally just ancho chili powder, cumin, and brown sugar, for example). I might recommend this for someone looking for a variety of solid but basic recipes.

Definitely my most cooked-from cookbook in 2018! Good homey food, nothing too crazy, beautiful pictures. Some favorite recipes at our house: Pasta e Fagioli, Honey Chipotle Black Bean Salad, Gumbo, Almond Biscotti.

I received this book in a goodreads giveaway. This cookbook is full of a variety of recipes. There are also pages of special instruction. The photo's are great with step by step photo's and instruction on recipes that require a process such as rolling dough, cutting dough. The instructions are easy to follow. I would recommend this book and I think it would be an awesome idea for a gift book for a bridal shower.

Jennifer Segal went to culinary school and worked in professional kitchens, but found the professional kitchen atmosphere very stressful and overwhelming. She stopped cooking professionally once she had children, but still loved to cook. After starting a children's cake business she decided to start a blog and use her professional cooking skills to help others learn to cook quick, but good meals. Once her blog took off she had the opportunity to create this cookbook. And there are SO MANY great recipe ideas that this is one I might have to buy! There are so many easy, but delicious looking recipes I want to try. The cookbook is organized like many cookbooks with starters/snacks, salads, main dishes, etc. but with each recipe there are "pro tips" and "sourcing" ideas for how to source the best quality ingredients. There are also a few pages between each chapter with "pro tips from my kitchen" talking about something that is common knowledge to professional chefs, but might not be to home cooks. Overall, a VERY impressive cookbook. I'm looking forward to trying some of these recipes!

I was introduced to Jennifer Segal's baking through her grandmother's recipe for mandelbrot/biscotti. I thought biscotti was hard to make, but Segal's recipe was easy to follow. After I made a modified version of her late summer plum cake, I decided to take a look at her cookbook. Just about all of her recipes are straightforward and delicious. Even the more "exotic" dishes are down to earth -- like the Thai crunch salad with peanut dressing, whose ingredients you can find in any good supermarket. Even the more time-consuming dishes, such as the Maryland-style crab cakes with quick tartar sauce (I make these cakes with cod) and the fiery roasted-tomato basil soup, do not require a hunt for ingredients you've never heard of before. The recipes will appeal to seasoned home cooks as well as to beginners. One of Segal's most scrumptious meals is probably the easiest to make: Smoked gouda & pesto grilled cheese sandwiches. Wish I could eat it every day.

Ok this cookbook is the best! I found this author through a food blog and consistently went back for more recipe ideas with great success, so that’s what prompted me to get her book. I usually don’t go for cookbooks in general because I will at most go to them for a few things I like, and then these huge bricks will just take up room on my shelf. This one is great though, I’ve already tried a handful of things from it and have my eye on more things to try in the future! The recipes I have tried are reliably good and well thought out 🍽😋

This sequel cookbook is just as amazing as the first and I am so excited to cook more! I’ve already tried 3 new recipes since buying it last week and about to try another couple this week. I just feel like the food in here is simple and delicious and totally my style. I will recommend this to anyone and everyone looking for a new cookbook!!!

Also I really appreciate that Jen includes metric measurements alongside US because I use a kitchen scale and prefer measuring that way

Jennifer Segal is a busy mom so she created this cookbook to help families get meals on the table during the week. The Weeknight meals are a little faster and easier to throw together when everyone is home from work or school. The Weekend meals are when you might have more time to work on a meal or for something special. Most of the recipes looked easy to follow with no weird or random ingredients. There were a few I'd like to try as well.

Her lasagna soup intrigued and terrified me

yet skimming both her books, impressed me
you expect nothing too special without any high powered reviews
or things like 'quick-fix dinners ' or lasagna dumped into a soup

she's really good if you look carefully at every recipe
and she feels like she writes the books for mothers who want to go from Betty Crocker to one step closer to Julia Child, yet being manageable

Segal who once worked in restaurants and then started her blog, once upon a chef, wrote this cookbook to provide really good recipes to home cooks like those who regularly read her blog. She starts with an equipment primer that is good for the beginning cook. Recipes tend to the basic as do the color pictures that appear with most dishes. Recipes are clearly written and very specific but not rigid. She might tell you about how many pulses in the food processor but will also suggest that popcorn can be done on the stove or microwave. Segal includes pro tips and sourcing advice with most recipes. Pictures showing techniques are also included for more complex techniques. And, where possible, she utilizes store ready ingredients like store bought pesto, which make some dishes super easy if not particularly special (some people might balk at a grilled cheese “recipe” that includes Gouda, bread, pesto and butter).
Practical cookbook that doesn’t require much in the way of previous cooking experience, prep or time.

I bought this while browsing in a bookstore on vacation because everything looked fresh, delicious and uncomplicated. I read it through on the plane ride home and can’t wait to try everything in it. The intros and side tips she includes are all helpful. There is nothing earth-shatteringly different in the recipes but enough variations and twists on dishes my family likes that it will definitely help me freshen up my weekly cooking rut. And so far so good. I could eat the entire platter of burrata and tomato salad with pesto & pine nuts by myself. My daughter easily made the chocolate croissant bread pudding as part of my mother’s day breakfast and everyone loved it. I can’t wait to work my way through so many other recipes - I can tell this cookbook will be in major rotation in my kitchen.

I have been following Jenn Segal online for several years. I was first attracted to her blog when looking for a recipe for hearty soups. I was immediately drawn to the colourful pictures and easy to follow directions with great tips sprinkled throughout. All of the recipes I have tried over the years have turned out perfectly and were equally loved by family and friends. When Jenn announced that she was writing a cook book, many of her blog fans were very happy. This cook book does NOT disappoint! I love the "pro tips" written at the side of recipes. Jenn also give great make ahead and pairing guidelines. The pictures are wonderful and accurate. (Although mine don't have the artistic display) Great food. Great Book for the seasoned or newly minted cook.
Thank you Jenn.

I love reading cookbooks. They really just make me happy.

What I loved: Lots of pictures (since we eat with our eyes first), detailed instructions, no crazy or hard to find ingredients. Lots of different takes on salads and side dishes.

What I didn't love: Lots of sugar and cornstarch throughout the recipes. *However* I found that the recipes should be easy to modify to swap sugar or starch, or in the case of our family, to make things dairy free.

My kids were reading this over my shoulder and even found recipes they thought sounded good or wanted to try, so that automatically makes this cookbook a good investment! I'm anxious to try out some recipes!

This is a beautiful cookbook filled with a variety of delicious recipes. I love that there are traditional recipes as well as twists on the classics. The first recipe I tried was the "Deviled Eggs with Candied Bacon and Chives." I love to make deviled eggs as an appetizer, and this recipe was a delectable twist on a favorite. I also love that Segal includes Pro Tips in the margins, and I can't wait to work my way through this gorgeous cookbook.

This met every expectation I have for an excellent cookbook: a photo for every recipe, a short interesting story for every recipe, side dish recommendations for each, easy to find ingredients, kid friendly, options for dairy and gluten free, entertaining ideas, cooking tips, and the book itself lies flat on the counter for easy viewing while cooking. I got it at the library, but I will definitely be getting a copy for my shelves.

I've been following Once Upon a Chef for a few years now via her email blog/recipe posts. I was pleasantly surprised when I found this easy to use and in perfect condition cookbook in a Free Little Library (what a great way to share cookbooks) and I'll be keeping this one as the pictures, descriptions and recipes are all easy to follow and helps give some guidance to get as much processed food out ones diet.

Ps.
I put a different cookbook that I no longer had need for into the same FLL.

Segal seems lucky that her "picky" family doesn't seem very picky. While these recipes weren't super complicated, they seemed more like an attempt to convince a young family to eat more upscale meals, not a recipe book made for families (they might not have a stay-at-home parent) with varied tastes and willingness to experiment. That said, I appreciated her drinks and dessert sections. I will probably use a handful of recipes out of this book so for an online deal I guess that's fine.

Jen Segal is one of two individuals who I totally trust when reading her recipes. I have made dozens of her on line recipes and have never had a dud. Her recipes are tested and retested and if I even see a Once Upon A Chef recipe, I save it. I have already preordered her new cookbook which will be out in the Fall of 2021. I rarely buy cookbooks any more, since many recipes never get made. Jennifer Segal is a rare exception.
