This second standalone graphic novel based on the film series is a new adventure that takes place shortly after the events in How to Train Your Dragon 2 , during the period in which Hiccup is desperately trying to fill his father's role as the chief of Berk. Created with the help of the film's writer, director, and producer, Dean DeBlois, it bridges the gap between the second and third films.
Hiccup, Toothless, and the rest of the dragon riders encounter two deadly yet mysteriously linked One is an island consumed by Dragonvine, an uncontrollable force of nature that's poisonous to humans and deadly to dragons. The other is an all-new, all-terrifying dragon species--the web-spitting Silkspanners!
Another awesome graphic novel read in one sitting!💖🐉
Illustrations: Five stars!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I liked the style in The Serpent's Heir better, but these were just as good just in a more quirky style that honestly went well with the wacky jungle setting! I especially loved Bayana's design!💖
Writing: Five stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Again very well done, just like another episode of Race to the Edge!!!
Language: N/A. A few times where characters say "What the—" but never finish.
Violence: N/A. Some fighting but no gore whatsoever.
Magic: N/A.
(Other: Mentions of the viking gods.)
This was so much fun!!! The jungle setting was so fun and that beginning! Man, that was such a good beginning scene!💖🥺 Again I love how it just feels like a Race to the Edge episode, it makes me feel so cozy!💖🥰🐉 Eret being saddled with the twins was golden, and Ruffnut, boy Ruffnut was cracking me up...lol...😂 Tuff was great as always too😂💖 And Hiccup and Toothless are obviously as awesome as always, and idk but Toothless is soooo cute in this style!! His giant green eyes!💖🥺🥺🐉🐉 And Astrid with a flaming battle-axe is just AMAZING!!💖 And I loved Bayana's character too, he was very cool and his bluntness was so funny paired with the twins!💖😂 Anyway, this was super awesome!! And I need more of these graphic novels ASAP DreamWorks, or a Race to the Edge season 7 like these graphic novels😜💖😂🐉
Another Sunday afternoon read...though, Jaiden just handed this one to me, knowing I'd want to read it...lol...
It was such a fun story! The concept, the humor, the whole thing was great! I'd love to see it brought to life as an episode! Or just more of these graphic novels would be fantastic! (Maybe a longer one? DREAMWORKS?)
There is something unsettling about this art-style and this story didn't necessarily hold any importance. I read it anyway because I love these characters but I've kind of already forgotten what I just read. But Hiccstrid though
While I did love Dragonvine, it didn’t feel as coherent as its companion, The Serpent’s Heir. It was an engaging, fun story; there just seemed to be something missing. The artist of the second graphic novel just didn’t capture Hiccup and Toothless and the rest of the crew in the correct light in my opinion. All things considered, it was a wonderful addition to the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. I can’t wait to read any future HTTYD graphic novels!
While I did love Dragonvine, as it reminded me of an episode of Race to the Edge, it didn’t feel as coherent as its companion, The Serpent’s Heir. Don’t misunderstand me. It was an engaging, fun story; there just seemed to be something missing. The art also changed a fourth of the way into the comic, and the second artist just didn’t capture Hiccup and Toothless and the rest of the gang in the same manner as the first artist. There were a few things mentioned in the comic that I was unclear about, mainly one or two characters I had never heard mention of before but who seemed to be important people to the dragon riders and to Berk. Everything considered, however, it was a wonderful addition to the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. I can’t wait to see what they come up with next!
Actual rating: 2.5 stars. Just like the previous one, I feel like this is just an episode of the show. It's not as good as I was hoping for since this is supposed to be bridging the gap between the 2nd and 3rd movie. In fact, I thought the first graphic novel was actually better. The story begins in medias res and doesn't really explain much. There's a new gadget that comes out of nowhere and the gang meets what appears to be an African tribe. I'm all for it, but the reader isn't given any explanation for how an African tribe wound up in Scandinavia besides "villain from the second movie". I haven't seen the last season of the show so I don't know if any of this is referenced there, but the description lists this as a standalone so I shouldn't need to have seen it. I also did not like the art at all. With exceptions to the flashbacks at the beginning, none of the characters really look like themselves.
Not the best in terms of characters, story, or art. Some of the characters don't act like their film/television counterparts, the plot is all over the place and includes 180 degree turns in terms of motivations left and right, and the art is very hit or miss depending on the page.
I guess I can tolerate the open borders allegory, but the story reads like more white savior nonsense. None of the fun of the books, movies, or show make it into this graphic novel, which is a shame.
Hello there! In preparation for this week's upcoming How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, I picked up a copy of this comic and gave it a read. And here's my review!
After Star Wars, How To Train Your Dragon is my favorite franchise. I love the setting and its characters, and I listen to the soundtracks all the time. And the third and final How To Train Your Dragon film is one of my most anticipated movies in years if not ever.
Another tie in comic called "The Serpent's Heir" came out before this one, and I really enjoyed it. It told a good story, stayed true to the characters, and had really nice artwork.
This one, unfortunately, was not quote as good.
THE STORY: Taking place adter How To Train Your Dragon 2 and The Serpent's Heir, the first part of this comic is actually the "Burning Midnight" story that came out on free comic day a couple of years ago. Basically, the hiccup and the other riders have been trapped in a cave, and they tell stories about stoick around a fire pit. The rest has them ecountering a spider-like dragon species and some nasty plant life.
THE BAD: what horrible looking artwork. The characters look awful, and oftentimes more like what they did in the first movie and the early seasons of DreamWorks Dragons than their looks from the second film. It really dampered my enjoyment of the comic quite a bit.
THE GOOD: a good number of the strengths of The Serpent's Heir carried over to Dragonvine. While the story isn't quite as good as the one told in Serpent's Heir, it was still enjoyable. It feels like an eoisode of the TV series again, and I was fine with that. While it didn't explore hiccup or the other characters in any interesting ways, I still found the twists and turns it took fairly interesting. The recurring characters stayed true to their depictions in the second How To Train Your Dragon film, and the new characters were interesting too. The worldbuilding was good, in that we got to see new places and new dragons. I also thought they did a good job explaining why toothless couldnt use his alpha commands here.
THE CONCLUSION: final rating is 3 stars. It was fun, but almost ruined by bad artwork. If you're a hardcore fan of the franchise check this one out, but otherwise just rewatch the first 2 movies and wait for The Hidden World.
i enjoyed the story, continuing from Movie#2 end (?) / Book#1 (serpent's Heir) (i) depicting drago's aftermath, (ii) Hiccup's start as Chief , and (iii) Berk trying to accept many ... as Chief Hiccup is travelling more than Stoick did (maybe cuz of their age or phase in life)
The -1 star, is because of the change in art. I wouldn't mind the artist change if Hiccup wasn't so inconsistenetly drawn by the 2nd artist. It diddn't happen all the time, but it was very noticable. None of the charactesr seemed to have the issue aside from astrid on teh last page.
Maybe it was hiccup's hairdo or the 2nd artist elongated his face at times... the worse was that it was sporadic in teh changes. The last 3 pages were the worse though.
Still 4 stars cuz me and my nephew like the world and this story was good ----- Was Eret/Valka in the first book...i gotat go back and read that again.
I want to give this a 2.5, but that's not really available in Goodreads.
Where to begin... The art style changed very quickly into the book, and it changed the whole vibe of the graphic novel and not for the better. I also felt like the characters were not themselves and visually looked younger than they should be. The graphic novel also took on too much plot with too little time and physical page room. It started in media res, but it had no context whatsoever later on and felt rushed in creation. Other than learning about another new dragon and culture (that was POORLY EXPLAINED, IF AT ALL), this book did not feel worth reading. And I LOVE httyd, so this was hard for me to review poorly.
The art in this one was far inferior to that of The Serpent's Heir (the fandom response was absolutely hilarious) but I appreciate the attempt at diversity by the introduction of African characters. Plus DeBlois did name the "dragonvine" after Berk's Grapevine, the fansite. So that was a fun nod to the fans and that will always be appreciated. I also appreciate the opening section of the comic, where we get a loving tribute to Stoick and a clear and touching christening of Astrid as someone Stoick considers his daughter.
As far as the plot goes, this book was great! Stoick was mentioned, the Dragon Riders encountered a deadly weed (dragonvine) and also discovered a new species of dragons called of the Silkspanners. Personally, I really enjoyed the amount of time the characters talked about Stoick because I really miss his character. The artwork of the book was frustrating though. One person drew up the first 17 pages while a different person illustrated the other 70ish pages. I found the art to be weird since the difference is really noticeable but didn't know there were 2 artists until I flipped to the front cover. Ignoring this though, this continuation of the Dragon Riders' stories is worth a read!
this is not the book I read but the book I read had a relationship with three people they stood together and fought dragons and not letting the mean higher position dragon fighters get in there a way one example is when char 1 was getting bullied bc people thought he would never beat the dragon, as a result, he killed the dragon in 321 this shows that if people hate on you that's just going to boost you more
I didn’t like this one as much as The Serpent’s Heir, and I think most of that came down to the switch in illustrator, because I didn’t enjoy the style of the second illustrator as much as the first....and it’s the second style that makes up the bulk of the graphic novel.
Again, a fun story that feels reminiscent of the show, but didn’t quuuite pack the same punch.
The story in my opinion is better than serpent's heir. The art is worse. The characters don't really look like they did in the movies, or even in the previous comic. The angles on the faces are weird sometimes, and characters become unrecognisable from panel to panel. This really messed with my enjoying the book wich is why i rated it lower than serpent's heir.
The art style jumps from 1 to another 1 too many times and gets rather distracting(it reminds me more of a zine rather than an official comic), other than that I would recommend this comic. Only to die-hard movie fans though. To casuals or someone reading this as a standalone, it would most likely disappoint.
I wanted to give this story a higher rating, but I think some of the elements of the storytelling were less clear than in the previous graphic novel, so I knocked off a star. I did enjoy the story and how it came together in the end, and the graphics were great. Recommend for any How to Train Your Dragon fan.
it was a really good book. I really liked it. It had some of my favorite characters in the series. I really like the two twins when one of them lifted up their arm and an arrow went straight through the hole, so that was one of my favorite parts, and I thought it was really really good.
I love everything about this series! I will pick up any sort of media that's created because toothless is the cutest guy ever. Also, I adore hiccup. So yes, maybe it's a bit biased but I had the most fun revisiting these two in this pages. Loved it!
I got it in the hopes of reading it to my 4yr old. Graphic novels are much better self-served of this caliber. The plot was meh - drawings sometimes great.
