An informative study of prehistoric America discusses various theories about the origins of civilization in the Western hemisphere and examines some of the accomplishments of these early American peoples in terms of agriculture, government, and science.
Very outdated but I'm sure it was wonderful when it was written. The maps, drawings, and details were wonderful. It's a great book to read before studying North and South American countries. (Maybe a more updated version would be better...but what homeschooler can beat a cheap library sale book???)
The best lasting gift I received from this book is a real vision of what life was like for the first people of these American continents. The book is so comprehensive; it can hardly be ingested whole, but it delivered a vivid picture of the true settlers of this land. Each American cultural group receives its due description. What appreciation I already had for the human history of the Americas was blown open, amplified. Sattler begins with the richness and diversity of human life, and she brings it detail and specific dignity. My own favorite is the section on the great migration that first brought people to North America. I almost had a sense of being there...
A great read for someone interested in such a survey.
