I have a couple of connections to this book. My ancestors from Herefordshire were among those who joined the LDS Church during Wilford Woodruff's work there in the 19th century. Also, as a former member of the Tabernacle Choir, I was acquainted with Cynthia Doxey Green when she did a portion of this research, and had a few conversations with her about it before the book was written. I want to thank the authors for their research. I certainly want to emulate their efforts and become more completely acquainted with my ancestors from this era.

This was a good, succinct history and analysis of the missionary efforts of Wilford Woodruff in the three counties of England prior to 1840. It gave a little background to the church’s history in the U.S. and England but focused more on the mission and the converts themselves. It was very interesting and I learned a lot, I’ve already looked back at it to reference the dates and people and for some good quotes and stories. The book had a good mix of research and information with personal stories etc. The pictures of the places significant to the early converts and church were good and I plan to reference those and the book itself on an upcoming trip to England.

"The Field Is White" takes readers on a historic tour of England during the missionary service of Wilford Woodruff and other Mormon apostles in the Three Counties area (Worcestershire, Herefordshire, and Gloucestershire). Chief among the new converts were the United Brethren, who were seeking a restoration of ancient Christianity and who soon become ardent supporters and missionaries themselves. The authors of this book, Carol Wilkinson and Cynthia Doxey Green, have documented the stories and added delightful color photos and maps to introduce the people and places. Highly recommended!
