After the Second Battle of Prospero, the White Scars carry a lone sorcerer with them – Revuel Arvida, only survivor of the Wolf King’s wrath. Guided by the Stormseer Yesugei, he recovers his esoteric powers, as well as reliving memories of a world turned to ashes. But the sons of Chogoris are wounded too, riven by the treachery that almost destroyed them. As the Khan delivers his painful judgement on those of his warriors who swore the fateful blood oath, Arvida too must decide where his true allegiance lies – to those who saved him from oblivion, or to the lost legacy of his own primarch.

Read it because
It continues a pair of stories from Chris Wraight's Heresy novels, and shows how loyalty and allegiance is never easy during a civil war, and how one event can change the way a warrior views the universe – and himself.

March 2024 Read using the Horus Heresy Omnibus Project Reading Order Omnibus XI Ordu of the Khan (https://www.heresyomnibus.com/omnibus...) as part of my Oath of Moment to complete the Horus series and extras.

The Wraight Heresy continues with the lone Thousand Son, Revuel Arvida, among his White Scars allies witnessing the sentencing of those who refuse to rejoin the Legion despite now knowing the false information they made their blood paths under. Plagued by dreams of his brothers in the Corvidae, discomforted by the embrace of his cousins who would make him one of his own, and fearing he may have survived Prospero, only to fall victim of his Legions curse, he must decide how to move forward in a future he can no longer see clearly.

I'm all in for the Wraight Heresy at this point and this was a fascinating and different kind of story, as well as maddening for the right reasons. Wraight explores the complicated feelings and situation tbis orphan of war finds themselves in with his solid and evocative style.

I enjoyed this a lot and I am left frustrated by character choices I don't understand, but absolutely accept in the circumstances.

Through using the Horus Heresy Omnibus Project (www.heresyomnibus.com) and my own choices, I have currently read 20.41 Horus Heresy novels, 12 novellas, 58 short stories/ audio dramas, as well as the Macragge's Honour graphic novel, 10 Primarchs novels, 4 Primarchs short stories/ audio dramas, and 2 Warhammer 40K further reading novels...this run. I can't say enough good about the way the Horus Heresy Omnibus Project suggestions. I'm loving it! Especially after originally reading to the releases and being so frustrated at having to wait so long for a narrative to continue.

In “Rebirth” Arvida of the Thousand Sons returned to Prospero to find his home homeworld destroyed and his Legion routed. In “Scars” he came to the aid of Jaghtai Kahn and the White Scars. Now he is an honoured guest aboard their fleet.

Yesugei Stormseer of the White Scars reappears in this short story. Both Arvida and Yesugei are masters of the warp, and Yesugei seems keen to win over the wounded Arvida. Arvida for his part is still suffering the attrition of Prospero. Wandering through dusty halls and being haunted by the spectres that dwell there.

There is something touching about the friendship that develops between the two characters, even though it is complicated. Arvida senses that he is a “replacement” for the loss of Ahrihman, a close friend to Yesugei. He also knows that Yesugei wants him to join the White Scars, to be as one with them, but that doesn’t sit well with Arvida. He is an orphan, alone and without a brotherhood. But he is not ready to let go of the past.

This story also provides us with the first proper details of how the Khan is dealing with the traitors in his ranks. So many of his sons were of the Lodge and swore to Horus. Now tribunals are being held. Those that repent are sent out to strike back at the traitors, few however return, the missions near suicide. Such is the justice of the Khan, and it weighs heavily on his soul.

This one was great. Less actiony than I like it, but great nonetheless.

This is an ad.

The two books I really want to read on The Horus Heresy are the main Space Wolves and Thousand Sons ones. Now I want to read Scars too. Thos short story hyped me quite a bit and made me want to start Ahriman.

It was exciting.

The constant danger got me wondering, the uncertainty was quite exciting. It doesn't answer too many questions, though.

I have recently gotten obsessed with the white scars and this book fed me quite a bit of it. I do think I read it in the wrong order (Like, The Horus Heresy books in general, but also the short story 'Restorer'), so I didn't get the full depth.

Still, it kept me entertained in a strange moment in time for me. It was well paced, had no fluff (I don't think), no meandering, and had quite a bit of conflict.

I think I'm considering the White Scars novel now... I really liked these marines...

Maybe read A Thousand Sons, then this book, then Restorer? I think that was my mistake.

A short read about the identity crisis of a Thousand Son after escaping from the ruins of Prospero with a detachment of White Scars. There's a sweet moment between the two sorcerers, a White Scar and the rescued Thousand Son that belies the core of pure hatred between loyalist and traitor.
