The Nyxia Triad #3

Nyxia Uprising

Rate this book
In the highly anticipated Nyxia Triad series finale, Emmett and the Genesis team must join forces with a surprising set of allies if they’re ever to make it home alive.

Desperate to return home to Earth and claim the reward Babel promised, Emmett and the Genesis team join forces with the Imago. Babel’s initial attack left their home city in ruins, but that was just part of the Imago’s plan. They knew one thing Babel didn’t. This world is coming to an end.

Eden’s two moons are on a collision course no one can prevent. After building eight secret launch stations, the Imago hoped to lure Babel down to their doomed planet as they left it behind. A perfect plan until the Genesis team’s escape route was destroyed.

Now the group must split up to survive the hostile terrain and reach another launch station. As both sides struggle for the upper hand, the fight leads inevitably back into space, where Emmett, his crewmates, and their new allies will fight one final battle for control of the Genesis ships. Win this time, and they’ll survive Babel’s twisted game once and for all. As the Imago world falls, this is the last chance to rise.

Scott Reintgen grew up in North Carolina, and took full advantage of the fact that he lived on the same street as fourteen of his cousins. It could be a little crowded, but he threw a few elbows and carved out a space for himself as the family storyteller. He enjoyed the role so much that he decided to spend most of college and graduate school investing in the world of literature. This led to a career teaching English and Creative Writing in the great state of North Carolina, where he currently lives with his wife and family. To his great delight, the demand for stories and storytellers is alive and well. As such, he can often be found at local coffee shops laboring over stories that he hopes his family, and fans, will love.

MY BABIES. My sweet, sweet babies!!!

Desperate kids, turned intergalactic space pirates, I love you all so much. You make me proud.

Guys, this action-packed, YA Science Fiction series is soooooo underrated. I loved each and every one of these books.

You watch these kids grow, from the early, dare I say naive, competitors they were, to the strong and fearless young adults they become. It added 10-years to my life.

As this is the third book in the triad, I won't say too much on the plot, but I can scream from the rooftops that this was a very satisfying conclusion.

During the course of the series, you become really attached to these characters. They are diverse, well written and each one exudes their own distinctive voice.

That's it. I am done. I'm not sure how much more gushing I can handle in one day.

I am so happy I made time for this.

It has taken me way too long. I definitely plan to read this series again someday, back-to-back. I had forgotten some details in between the second book and this one, so I would love to get a full immersive experience of bingeing them.

If you like YA Scifi, if you like competition tropes, if you like found families, do yourself a favor and check this series out.

The final book in the Nyxia trilogy comes out April 16th. Having read this book (and having-- you know-- written it) I have a few thoughts:

1. You are not ready.
2. Your favorites are not safe.
3. This is the best book I've ever written (for now)
4. My favorite chapter in the book is a death scene.
5. There are two new POVs
6. All your questions will be answered.
7. I made my mom cry at the end of this one.
8. You are not ready.

Thanks so much to the folks who have loved this series, spread it out in the universe, shared it with friends and family. I'm incredibly proud of this conclusion. I think it does justice to a beloved cast of characters that I-- and you-- have come to care so much about. A friend of mine read the book and said it basically feels like the "end game" starts on page 45 and the tension and racing heartbeat doesn't go away until the very last page. I was hoping for a breathless conclusion that delivered on all the promises the rest of the series makes. I hope I fulfilled those promises to you. While I do write for myself, I also write for the reader who will curl up with this book the day it comes out and race to the conclusion alongside my characters.

Thank you so much for being such loyal, fantastic readers.

The NYXIA TRIAD YA SF trilogy is complete now that this third volume has been published. Review first posted on Fantasy Literature:

Nyxia Uprising is the fast-paced conclusion to Scott Reintgen’s NYXIA TRIAD YA sci-fi trilogy, an adventure with several teenage protagonists. It’s set both in space and on a distant planet called Eden that has two moons, an alien race called the Imago, and an abundant supply of nyxia, a malleable mineral with near-magical powers. These three books tell a single, unified story, and it’s impossible to appreciate this series without reading all of the books in order … and here is your obligatory spoiler warning for the earlier volumes, as I’ll briefly recap the tale thus far.

The first volume, Nyxia, had a Hunger Games-in-space type of plot (though the competition between the teens is less … murderous, it’s still pretty intense). A powerful corporation called Babel assembled a group of ten teenagers of various nationalities but generally less-privileged backgrounds for a space flight to Eden to mine the priceless nyxia for Babel, promising them immense wealth for a few years of their lives in Babel’s service. Most of the story is narrated by Emmett Atwater, an African-American teen from Detroit. The year-long flight to Eden is spent in an exciting (for both the teens and the reader) and exhausting (for the teens) competition between the teenagers for a coveted place with the final group that will actually land on Eden.

The second book, Nyxia Unleashed, shifted to the teens’ exploration of Eden (better known as Magnia, the Imago name for their planet) and getting to know the Imago, the human-like inhabitants of Magnia, as their group travels toward and into the planet’s largest city. It becomes even more clear to Emmett, his love interest Morning Rodriguez, and the other teenagers just how untrustworthy Babel is. But it turns out the Imago have been keeping a huge secret as well: the two moons of Magnia are going to collide in a few weeks, and the planet will become unlivable.

As Nyxia Uprising begins, it’s now a race against time and Babel’s military forces, to try to get Earthborn teenagers and a representative group of the Imago ― who will be the sole survivors of their entire race ― up into space to try to commandeer the Babel spaceships that are in orbit around Magnia, and travel back to Earth. Since the Imago aren’t a spacefaring race, getting up to the spaceships is more challenging than it might seem. The Imago and Earth teens also need to be prepared to fight Babel’s leaders and their marine forces for access to and control of the ships. But the Imago have nyxia, limitless imagination, and desperation on their side. Not to mention some extremely bright and well-trained (thanks for that at least, Babel) human teenagers.

Babel’s been not only cheating and lying to the human teens and the Imago, but also attempting to murder everyone on the planet, so it’s all fair. But Babel’s not going to give up easily.

Both of the earlier books in this series were exciting and engaging reads, if noticeably light on the science aspect of science fiction (for reasons I delve into in my review of Nyxia Unleashed). The teenage protagonists are an appealing and highly diverse group, and the novels (especially the first and this third one) are briskly paced, with hardly a moment for the teens and the readers to relax and take a deep breath or two. But I couldn’t help but feel that the series lost some of its sharpness and creativity in this last book. It’s focused on a single mission: get to the spaceships, take over, get back to Earth. Despite multiple obstacles and a few surprising casualties along the way, Nyxia Uprising overall felt rather predictable. The denouement was also a minor let-down, as Reintgen wrapped up the story with some feel-good giftwrap and a nice bow that took a few too many chapters to unfold.

Despite some weaknesses in this concluding volume, overall the NYXIA TRIAD series is a fun read that kept me interested to the end. I’d recommend it mostly to older teen readers who like sci-fi adventures with a diverse cast.

Content notes: Lots of violence and death. Bodies everywhere!

Initial comments: We started off in the first volume, Nyxia, with a Hunger Games in space kind of plot (though the competition between the teens is less ... murderous, it's still pretty intense).

description

The second book, Nyxia Unleashed, shifted to exploring an alien planet, getting to know the Imago, the human-like people who live there ... and fighting against Babel, the evil corporation from Earth that brought the teens to this planet.

description

The two moons are important: they're going to collide in a few weeks, and the planet will become unlivable. So now it's a race to try to get our group of teens and a representative group of the Imago - who will be the sole survivors of their entire race - up into space to try to commandeer the Babel spaceships, to save as many of them as possible.

Yo leyendo NYXIA SUBLEVADA: 🥺😎😃🙈😌

Even though Nyxia Uprising wrapped up one of the better YA trilogies I’ve read lately, I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as the first two books.

I just couldn’t get into it with the same gusto. Part of that was because of the lack of stimulating story components. Book 1 included a ton of engaging training sequences and compelling unknowns to discover. Not to mention exciting interpersonal conflicts and rivalries. Book 2 had a lot of dazzling world exploration, “magic” training as they learned how to use Nyxia, and some fantastic alien culture immersion.

… whereas book 3 was kindly just one long drawn out fight with few dynamics (and practically zero fun-factor elements). From a construction standpoint, I think it would’ve made for a stronger finish had the series been a duology, and final conflict shortened to wrap up the second book. As a stand alone installment, it was quite weak by comparison.

Another problem was my lack of investment in the characters. The main character, Emmett, didn’t get a lot of page-time, which I missed because it was his unique view on the world that helped hook me into the story in the first place. My issue was compounded because of how long it had been since I’d read the second book – it loses a little of the impact when you can’t remember much about the side characters. The story did eventually provide enough recap for me to recall everything, but it took a while, but even then the deaths and victories felt very distant.

Overall, I’m glad to have read this series – I enjoyed the first two books immensely. This one just didn’t tickle my fancy the same, but I still liked the resolution.

Recommendations: the Nyxia Triad is one of the better YA series I’ve read, and I enjoyed it mostly for its competition and world-building elements. It’s a watered down version of Red Rising with a very distinctive main character. I’d definitely recommend it to fans of the genre.

Scott Reintgen, I know you occasionally look through the reviews here on Goodreads and I have a message for you:

1. I love Nyxia and Nyxia Unleashed. They are engrossing, wonderful, complex, and full of emotions.

2. If you know any guaranteed way for me to get a ARC of Nyxia Uprising, please fill me in. By far one of my favorite YA scifi series that I just can't get enough of! Your characters are so relate-able, the world vivid and dangerous, and the situations that arise make my heart pound!

What a beautiful ending to a favorite series!! Scott Reintgen gave us a perfect ending to The Nyxia Triad in Nyxia Uprising. Can you say book hangover? I'm pretty sure I'll be experiencing a massive one.

In Book 3, Emmett and Morning along with the rest of the Genesis kids, and the Imago, race to beat back Babel and get off planet before the planet's moons collide. Along the way, the gang not only has to fight Babel, but also fight off the predators of the harsh planet.

I switched off between reading this book in print and listening to the audiobook. Ummmm... You may want to be careful about listening to this one while driving. Reintgen does not hold back about killing off his characters, and I found myself trying to drive through the tears during one especially emotional chapter.

And that ending! I'm completely at peace now and can leave this series knowing that all is right with the Genesis survivors.

The audiobook was narrated by Sullivan Jones, Kyla Garcia, Alex Romashov, and Keong Sim; Emmett, Morning, Anton, and Longwei. I loved Sullivan and Keong's chapters the best. For Kyla, I had to speed her chapters up for some reason. Overall, a little over a 4 for the performances.

Anticlimactic ending to an awesome series, but alas I understand why. Very interesting series to explore if you are looking for something to read in the YA sci-fi genre.

Fantastic ending to the series! It even brought tears to my eyes which doesn't happen very often. Definitely one of my favorite series. I can't wait to read Reintgen's next series about Alchemists. Another one of my favorite subjects. I'm going to be stalking all the sites for an ARC. : )

Reading this via audio was mind-blowing, even more than the other two in the series. I loved the full cast audio and the way all the voices were portrayed, and all the emotion. Reading it via audio gave me a stronger feel for the relationships and the way they played out among each other. Of the three books, Nyxia Uprising has the strongest exploration of all the relationships and the way they played out in the series.

Again, I'm not going to review too much here as I really do want to continue to be surprised by this series when I come back to it. Still, and probably will always be, a favorite.

Review 1/12/20
There have been three series in my life that have defined my life and my reading experience. The first was Harry Potter, which I first read when I was 8-9 years old. I read the two Percy Jackson series for the first time when I was between eleven and thirteen. I read the Paladin Prophecy series around when I started high school.

The Nyxia Triad is the fourth series that has become a part of who I am. Although I first read the first book over two years ago, the series stayed with me as one I decided I absolutely had to finish. It especially helped that Scott Reintgen read and responded to my first review of Nyxia, back in 2018. I can tell he is an author who cares about his readers, and he created something beautiful that readers can care about back.

I found myself gasping at every plot twist and crying at every death. This isn't something that happens with every novel, but the way Reintgen builds the Genesis family is absolutely magical. I have to say that this series shoots Reintgen to the top of the list of writers who most inspire me to write my own stories, and it was only after rereading Nyxia that I really started to get a direction for my story and characters. The whole series is magical and inspiring in a way that changed my life and my own writing, and for that I am forever grateful to Scott Reintgen.

I will definitely read Reintgen's other books as soon as I can get to them. I fell in love with this series more deeply than I have with any series in the last four or five years, and I definitely plan to read it over and over again, and see what I can discover and see in a new light. I imagine there will be many of these series, and I'm very excited for when I do. I'm definitely asking for a copy of Nyxia Uprising for my birthday, as I received the first two for my birthday last year and this Christmas. This series means so much to me, and I can't thank Scott Reintgen enough for writing it.

Nyxia Uprising is a very solid ending to the Nyxia triad. In general, I think this is a really fantastic sci-fi trilogy with a diverse cast of characters and thoughtful execution. It's a bit like Red Rising, but for a younger audience and a great series to try if you are looking for something that might suck in teen boys! This one was not my favorite of the series, but I think that has more to do with personal taste. Uprising is pretty heavy on the action with less emphasis on character development and world-building than previous books, which just isn't my favorite type of book. However, I think it was very well-written and with a satisfying conclusion and some emotional moments.

Do be aware there is quite a bit of violence in the series, and this book is no exception, but the author also makes an effort to consider the moral ramifications of violence and one character almost always takes a stance of non-violence.

I never thought an author can kill those many characters during one trilogy and get away with that... But I guess the story and plot has ruined me so I can give a free pass. But that does not mean that I am not angry..

Main highlights about the triad:

1) so many diverse characters with different cultures
2) found family ( I love this trope!!)
3) competition
4) space exploration
5) betrayals
6) sacrifice for greater good
7) sweet little side romances
8) humour
9) great friends and foe
10) Emmett Ethan Atwater

If you have that last one I don't think you need any other incentive to read this series.

Shoulder to shoulder!!

*Thoughts*

Nyxia Uprising is the third and final installment in author Scott Reintgen's The Nyxia Triad. Things you should know: The story takes place right where Nyxia Unleashed finished. This isn't just Emmett Atwater's story this time out. The author actually uses several other key characters like Longwei Yu, Morning Rodriquez, & Anton Stepanov to tell what is happening in various other places on the planet of Magnia. Yes, I would recommend that you read the books as they were released so that you don't get confused as to whom you are supposed to be rooting for.

4.5 stars but it was so emotional for me at the end that I decided to round up.

I really can't believe this series already ended, just like that. I followed the journey of so many characters and I'm just so glad they got the ending they deserved.

This book/series is not perfect by any means. For starters, the beginning was really boring for me, and I almost fell asleep. I found myself itching for something else. Sometimes, it felt like the plot really had no idea what it was doing, and I guess the book was still interesting, but it was like, too many twists and turns, and not enough of a solid directive that ran through the entire book. That's not to say that the ultimate goal didn't exist, but I felt like it should've been more present.

Compared to the 2nd book, I really felt everything all the characters felt so much more. It was as if everything they experienced, I experienced, and I really grieved for all their losses. That's what made their wins so much more satisfying. I also loved development of the Imago, and learning about them, and their determination. So many highs and so many lows.

If you love sci-fi, and a bit of dystopian, I highly recommend this series. It's a thrilling ride, and I hope so many people will love it as much as I did.

BOMBA!

Autor si nechal dostatek místa a času, aby správně nadávkoval všechny zvraty, postupně stupňoval napětí i tempo vyprávění a já se zkrátka vůbec nemohla odtrhnout!
Úplný konec pak působil jako perfektně důstojné zakončení celé série. Vzdal holt všem postavám, slzička ukápla a mně se ani trošku nechtělo s misí Nyxia loučit.

Verdikt?
Vesmírné Hunger Games pro fanoušky Akt Illuminae.
Dejte Nyxii šanci, myslím,že vás bude bavit stejně jako mě!

In the final book of the Nyxia Triad, things get crazy! We branched out and got a lot more of Anton's point of view, along with Morning and Long Wei. The audiobook was great for this because they had new narrators to help distinguish who's talking. A lot happened in this story, death and destruction, sacrifice and new bonds formed. My emotions were a bit all over the place, I got teary at some parts and was on the (metaphorical) edge of my seat at others. The ending was well done and this series as a whole was so much fun to read!

4 is for the obvious panic it induced me lmao. Great job on that front; by the end I really looked forward for the characters to safely go home, and wasn't even sure if I'd be getting that lol.

Hopefully would one day whip up a mini review, but probably not any time soon. My status updates, as usual, have my thoughts documented while reading.

A good conclusion to this series. Emmett was a fantastic main character, and I loved his journey through this endeavor. My biggest downer was feeling like Defoe wasn't very intimidating in this book, so his part in the story wasn't as good as I was hoping for.

5 stars.

“Pride roars through me like a river. It rushes over my oldest wounds and washes away the most haunting memories. It sweeps over all the scars that pushed me to leave my family and launch into space. Pride brighter than the sun. Pride in the fact that I can be the one who saves my Genesis brothers and sisters. Pride in knowing they will never forget my name. And pride in knowing—even at the end—that I am the one who finished first.”

This is, hands down, one of my favorite series of all time. I’m so sad it’s over, but this was such an excellent conclusion. Full RTC, hopefully soon. Probably when I’m a little less sad that it’s over.

Goodreads is glitching hard and didn't record my review months ago when I wrote it right after having finished the book. But this whole series put Scott Reintgen on my auto-buy authors list as I do think he executed a well above average SCIFI trilogy here. I would love to see it adapated on netflix or something bc it has a lot of potential and the ending was very satisfying. Overall highly recommend the series in totality.
