This is a collection of adult reads, not meant for those who prefer clean books.
May Sage is a USA Today Bestselling romance writer dabbling in different genres.
When she isn’t writing, she spends her time with her German Shepherd and her two Savannahs. She loves reading, ballet, running, and cake. Mostly, cake.
May Sage also writes longer fantasy romance novels as Alexi Blake.
I started reading this because I love fairy tale retellings, but even though it was pretty clean as far as I got, I could definitely tell this was Romance Genre, rather than Fantasy-Genre-With-Love-Story. When I went back to look at the description I found this line:
"This is a collection of adult reads, not meant for those who prefer clean books."
Either I wasn't paying attention when I first acquired this anthology, or the description was updated later, and either way, this is clearly NOT what I was looking for.
I really liked the premise of this anthology. Take the classic fairy tales and reimagine them with a twist in perspective, in time, or inserted into a different world. I loved some of them more than others. A run-down:
Little Red by May Sage I loved this one! We quickly learn that our buxom heroine in the royal red cloak is actually one of the “wolves” and definitely not a pushover! One of my FAVOURITE twists in the whole volume. Sexy and engaging!
Rumpelstiltskin by Vivienne Savage Told from the title character’s perspective, from the ignoble origins of his bogeyman story to his eventual redemption, Rumpelstiltskin emerges as a sympathetic and heart-warming heroic figure. Thought-provoking and empathetic. I really liked this story too!
Stepbrother by Erin Bradford By now, the typos in this anthology were starting to get to me and Stepbrother bore the brunt of my impatience. This is a vampire variant of the Cinderella tale, with weaky, almost parasitic, vampires who have “come out” into the world. The stepbrother refers to “days where he had to coheres them with his witty charm”. Coheres isn’t even a typo. It’s a non-word. It’s an indication that the author doesn’t actually know the word she wants to use. A one-off mistake? Well try this one: “Her father wasn’t a rich man by most L.A. occupants but he did make enough to live comfortably.” There’s more and more of that as I read on and it gets annoying. The bad grammar, poor vocabulary and the weaky vampires made this one a DNF.
Fly by Demelza Carlton An accident on horseback, complicated by subsequent amnesia, leads to an unplanned role reversal when two princesses (one with intentions to become Queen and the other her lady-in-waiting) travel to a neighboring kingdom to propose marriage to the Emperor. This entire drama is made possible because the two princesses are escorted only as far as the border by their guards, but not all the way to the Emperor’s castle. Improbability is heaped onto more improbability until reaching an abrupt ending, where a precarious peace is arbitrarily granted but certain scheming villainesses are far from neutralized. All this occurs in a foreign, clearly Asiatic world, where extreme misogyny is the norm. This story left me offended by its undercurrent of xenophobia. This was painful to read.
Bone and Ash by Nicole Zoltack Is our Disney version of Snow White a sanitized propaganda coverup of dark magic gone terribly wrong? This very twisted fairy tale, where Snow White features as the villain, was sinister and intriguing. Disturbingly well done.
Hunger in the Woods by Carma Haley Shoemaker Kali is a self-admitted witch, just trying to mind her own business in the small town where her family has lived for three generations. But whenever anything bad happens, the citizens of Madison blame her. And some very, very bad stuff happens in this Hansel and Gretel retelling. Despite facing disheartening prejudice, Kali has the love and support of the town sheriff. This one is short and sweet!
Rumpelstiltskin by May Sage Sadly, pales in comparison to the earlier one by Vivienne Savage. Our titular character has granted too many favours and as a result has shortened his otherwise immortal life. Consider him a Fay with a terminal condition - one that can be cured if he can find a mate and procreate. Well, as luck would have it, a suitable young woman suddenly becomes available! At this point, the reader gets fed a lot of random but unexplained facts. Like, why the young lady’s delinquent parents are responsible for her distress, why Rumpelstiltskin would hear her call for help amidst millions just because she was worried about her neighbor’s cat, why he would refuse an opportunity to solve his terminal dilemma, and why tragedy is avoided by the sudden intervention of a secondary character. It’s as if large portions of the story were inadvertently edited out, giving the reader no opportunity to warm up to this couple at all.
Twisted: Flipped Fairy Tales is an engaging set of that turns our favorite fairytales on their heads!
Of Bones and Ashes by Nicole Zoltak 5 stars When the queen of Saxonia, who as it happens was a powerful witch, cast a spell giving her life force to her daughter, she meant to give the girl a happy life free from the fear of death. What her daughter grew to be the scariest Snow White I’ve read. This retelling of Snow White is told by the not so wicked stepmother from her cell in the castle dungeon where she awaits execution by Snow White. How and why is she here? That’s our story. All the elements of the original tale are here, Snow White, Francesca the stepmother, huntsman, dwarfs – just not quite as you remember them. The people of the kingdom see their princess as a beautiful girl with snow-white skin, ebony hair, and rose red lips. Francesca sees through her enchantment to what she is, bone white skin, hair like ashes, and lips reddened by blood. This is not a happy story, but there is a happy ending. Once again, Nicole Zoltack gives us a story that is scary good!
Twisted: Flipped Fairy Tales was a totally enjoyable read. I've read nothing like these tales and it was great fun throughout. Oh think everyone will enjoy these tales. Jan Phelan Temple, Texas

Box sets box sets box sets!! I love me some box sets, they let me find new authors and still read books that I have been wanting to read from others. Little Red Omg loved it the queen is a trip, Lana is bad ass and proves a female can be alpha, and Chase has to take his foot or rather both feet out of his mouth.......you know typical male stuff Rumpelstiltskin I really enjoyed this version of the story, who knew making Rumpelstiltskin a hero would be so good. The characters were so believable that sometimes I could imagine sitting in the dark and watching them have their conversations. I totally enjoyed the fact that the author does not become tedious with descriptions as that is a huge pet peeve of mine in reading. Stepbrother I am totally in love with the story lines in this series. It gives a fresh adult view into old fairy tales. I also like how the author has characters from previous books included in the story so we see just how far the happily ever after is. Yes it is part of a series and a must read !! Bones and Ash This one was dark and depressing and kind of hard for me to read for personal reasons. Still a decent story though do not let my thoughts hinder you on reading it.
This was a good book me likely very much, the writing flowed and ebbed like the gentlest waves on the shore. The first book was wonderful. Rumpelstiltskin is my new favorite leading man. The different take on Hansel and Gretel made me want to scream at all the towns people and the Faye are always there to help at the end. There were a few books in the middle that bored me but overall me likely very much. Would recommend it
My love for fairy tale re-tellings grows with each one I read. There were several in this one where I haven't read the original tales they're based on, but that's OK. I enjoyed each of the stories in this anthology. There were a couple that feel off because they're shorter pieces based in another larger world, which got a little confusing because it felt like I was missing information, but I still enjoyed each story.
Didn't get past the first story, Little Red. Author kept referring to the h's wolf as her "slutty wolfie puss" which had a water on a stone effect on me - once was bearable, multiple times made me want to reach for the nearest fork! I wanted to like it as the story had potential, but the aggravation became too much for me.
A great collection of your favorite fairy tales revamped.
Fly by Demelza Carlton Ava has courage even though she is scared and she has integrity. Lagle is devious and heartless, but with purpose. Yun is sweet and a true leader. It was a great story and was interesting to see how several of the stories linked together that the author has written in her fairy tale revamping.
Most of the stories were pretty good. I liked Fly and Vivienne Savage's version of Rumplestiltskin. Very different take on that one. Just a warning, some of them were pretty dirty.
An anthology of novellas! This is always a great way to pick new authors whose books you want to pursue. I enjoyed many of them and others fell flat. But that's what it's about. Check this out and judge for yourself!
Recently picked up this set based on other stories by May Sage. Wonderful pick up. Glad I took the risk. Too old for Grimms Fairy tales. It was great to see the old stories brought back to life. Shout out for Dance by Demelza Carlton, too!
Some of the stories were pretty good, and some i just couldn't get into. None Ash/ snow white was so depressing throughout the whole story i about have up on the rest of the book. I just wanted it to hurry up and be over with. Other then that one, I enjoyed the others
This review is for May Sage and Erin Bedford. Both these authors are great at giving fairy tales a modern twist the stories in this book are no exception.
Review based on Little Red by May Sage What will happen when Little Red would be a dominant female but without desire, to be an alpha of the pack? Add to it the prince who try to talk to her, but on hi way he makes constant mistakes; really funny queen - I literally LOVE her and a lot of tension! Don't forget bout BBW - big bad wolf - there will be also his appearing! Relly good retelling!
Super delicious and sizzling hot collection of alternative fairytales. Rumple has never been a favourite but he is now. Definitely going to read the original to brush up. Going to tuck into the rest soon too, preferably by the beach. And at that price! Voluntarily reviewed.
I loved Rumplestiltskin immensely, both versions were a new take on this story! bone ivory was one of the best "flipped" versions of Snow white I've read, and the evil Hansel and Gretel was just creepy! all were great stories!
I only read Little Red, but truth be told - it's my favorite rendition of Little Red Riding Hood I've ever read. Lana is such a bad-ass and Chase is adorably clueless. LOVED it.
