Being a vampire isn’t easy. Jenna Skye thought she could pull it off without giving up her old life, but the compromises are taking a toll — and not just on her. Jenna’s sister Laura is eager to return to her glamorous life in Hollywood, and Mandy, Jenna’s wolfy partner, is getting sick of playing her K9 sidekick to get around the police department’s red tape.
Jenna’s never been good with change, but with her human existence slipping further and further out of her reach, she has no choice but to accept FBI agent Roman Knight’s offer to join the supernatural police force ruled by House Lilith. Her first assignment? Help hunt down a serial killer targeting new vampires in St. Louis… like her. Playing bait isn’t exactly what Jenna had in mind, but it’s a rookie lump she’ll have to take if she wants to climb the ranks in Blood Vice — and if she wants to survive her new life as a vampire.
USA Today bestselling author Angela Roquet is a delightfully macabre weirdo. She lives in Missouri with her irresistible BFF husband, their sweet, clever son, and a majestic marshmallow of a Great Pyrenees in a house stuffed with books, toys, skulls, owls, and glitter-speckled craft supplies.
Angela is a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association, as well as the Four Horsemen of the Bookocalypse, her epic book critique group, where she’s known as Death. When not swearing at the keyboard, she enjoys playing with her family and reading books that raise eyebrows.
GRAVEYARD SHIFT, the first novel in Angela's Lana Harvey, Reapers Inc. series, and BLOOD VICE, book one in the Blood Vice series, are now available for FREE on Kindle, Nook, Kobo, iBooks, & Google.
I heard a succinct version of the Hero's Journey recently: first, you put your hero in a tree, then you throw rocks at them, and then you get them out of the tree. Jenna was stuffed up that tree in the first book, and it's been rocks ever since. I found myself putting off reading this book on several occasions, just because I knew she was going to make some form of social gaff and I'm not a big fan of humiliation.
The next book promises hazing and vampire politics, so the rocks seem likely to continue. I'm sort of interested to read more about the world, but I tend to have an issue with books where the author seems to actively dislike the protagonist, and this is shaping up to be one of those. Somewhere, there's a balance between Mary Sue and doormat, and Blood and Thunder leans toward the latter.
Jenna has set her eyes and fangs on joining the Blood Vice. Blood & Thunder is another fast paced installment in the Blood Vice series. Great cast of characters that I can’t get enough of.
I read a previous series by this author that I loved. I'm normally not a fan of serious vampire stories. Vampires aren't something I enjoy in primary characters until they're funny--usually. However, I love Angela Roquet's writing style. I think I would read anything she writes. I have enjoyed every book in this new series.
Angela Roquet is one of my favorite urban fantasy writers - and I love her Blood Vice series most of all! It's got a touch of all my favorite genres: crime, mystery, vampires, werewolves, and romance. You'll laugh out loud, you'll tear up --and you'll love the wonderful characters and world she's created here.
Though I love Blood and Thunder, Blood Vice Book 2 even more than Blood Vice, Book 1-- you should read the first book in the journey in order to appreciate Detective Jenna Skye's rough transition into vamphood.
These are good, especially for the price. Honestly the MC relationship with the young werewolf is what makes this for me. It's a unique dynamic that I don't see in a lot of other books. There are either adults, or younger, or the generations don't coexist. It's nice to see this one work. And the other characters are interesting too. They are developing more in the 2nd book.
The series definitely picks up with the second installment and the UST between Jenna and Roman starts to melt the pages but I'm far more intrigued by the mysterious Duke.
"Blood and Thunder" finds Jenna barely managing to deal with her job in the K9 section of the police department. When she is called in on her night off and stumbled upon a body that was killed by a vampire she contacts FBI agent Roman Knight. Of course the commanding officer is none too pleased with her and she ends up telling him where to go. Although he reports her for insubordination she turns in her notice and takes off with Mandy before they can confiscate the werewolf.
Jenna is between a Rick and hard place. Her sister is going back to Hollywood in two weeks, Mandy is threatening to move out on her own and Vin, her high school crush is getting clingy. She knows she can have a job with the FBI' Blood Vice department if she would just swallow her pride and contact Roman. So, what is holding her back?
As they explore working together someone is out killing new vamplings. Jenna and Roman will rub noses with the higher vampires in an attempt to catch the killers; of course, this will put her on the Duke's radar. Hmm, what a tangled web we weave!
I enjoyed this second installment. There was plenty of drama and action. I also loved the complications that seem to emerge every time Jenna breathes. She sure knows how to get into trouble. My only criticism is not enough time is devoted to the crime being investigated. The main reason is because the book is to short. Since this should be the main plot, the author needs to provide greater depth and complexity not a cursory glance. I hope future installments will delve deeper. We'll see!
Book 2 from Ms Roquet continues the tale of Jenna Skye as she tries to figure out her new life. Just when things cannot seem to worse, her world is upended once again. Trouble seems to follow her no matter how hard she tries to avoid it. This book picks up a few months later than the first one and while things appear stable, Jenna knows her life is most likely about to change. Her twin sister Laura and her “foster” daughter/work partner Mandy both have their own lives and her boyfriend/blood provider, Vin, is getting a little too controlling. Broody Roman has something about him that Jenna just can’t shake and work, well, that has a whole other level of complications. Sometimes I feel the plot is rushed, but on the whole I love the story. If you have read Ms Roquest’s other works, you will “get” more of the book. I love cross over stories like this, and it is one of the reasons I love and will read anything that Ms Roquet puts out.
If you read the first book in this series you will know that Jenna is a newly made vampire. She "survived" an attack that saw her police detective partner die. Her attacker also did not survive the encounter so Jenna has no one to teach her how she is supposed to " live" now and she has so many questions. Luckily she has a doctor friend who is willing to supply her with bagged blood so With no other idea of what to do Jenna tries to return to her old life with the police department. Then she meets Roman, a member of a special unit of the F.B.I. Called Blood Vice whose job it is to police the supernaturals. He has the answers she needs but isn't too forthcoming. Roman does need her help though there's a serial killer targeting newly made vampires so he wants Jenna to act as bait it help catch the culprit. Jenna story is a refreshing take on an old story and is good very well. Jenna struggles with her new life feeding on blood horrified her as does how it makes her feel and all that super strength, forget it she feels like a limp dish Ray most of the time, her emotions are all over the place and she has no idea how she will be able to cope long term. I'm really enjoying tagging along on Jennas journey as she learns how to cope.in this new world.
The Blood Vice books are quickly becoming my go-to for fun, quality, urban fantasy. In theory, I love the genre, but it's often poorly written, with cliche characters and trite plots.
Like its predecessor, Blood and Thunder doesn't do anything remarkably different for urban fantasy, but it's... good. And sometimes, that's all I want. I genuinely like the characters, especially protagonist Jenna and her werewolf sidekick, Mandy.
There were a few moments of annoyance with the characters or jokes that felt a little too on the nose, but it surprised me how often I laughed or talked adamantly to the characters — signs of an engaging story.
When the book came to an end, I was a little surprised. It felt so brief! These books read more like episodes in a larger season to me than full-blown novels, but I don't really mind.
I'll definitely be picking up the next book in the series: they're easy, fun, funny, and give me the tropes I'm looking for in urban fantasy — with some actual quality to boot.
"Blood and Thunder", second in the Blood Vice series sees vampling (i.e. recently turned) Jenna Skye still trying to figure it all out. Without a sire, and with no regular supply of fresh blood, she's mostly clueless about vampire society and famished all the time. Her identical twin Laura, who has been filling in those awkward daylight hours appointments for Sky, wants to go back to Hollywood. Teen werewolf Mandy is getting antsy about the future and is considering moving out. And Jenna really need to sort out a blood harem. She needs an introduction to House Lilith and maybe, just maybe, FBI agent Roman Knight can make it happen. But first there's the problem of a serial killer targeting new vampires - if Jenna can solve it without getting herself killed (again!) it may give her a toe in the door. It's a solid read, though the pacing is sometimes a little slow. 3 Stars.
BLOOD VICE is a very entertaining lighthearted urban fantasy series and one that I am very fond of already. BLOOD THUNDER has our protagonist, neonate vampire Jenna Skye, trying to deal with the fact that she's failing miserably as a mortal police officer working the night shift, She desperately wants to join Blood Vice (the vampire cops) and is pressuring her sexy friend, Roman, to do so. Unfortunately, this creates awkwardness with Roman's owner, Vanessa, and Jenna's boyfriend, Vin.
Look, this book wasn't good even by trash standards. It was too short and nothing really interesting happened. If this was a show, it would be an episode to put into context how little this book gave to the readers.
The thing is, I feel like I need to keep reading to it to finally get interesting. Should this separate into as many books as it has? Absolutely not. But I do want to finally get to the damn point of it.
She's not even funny enough to make up for the rest. BUT MAMA SAID IM A TROOPER.
Jenna's life is really changing now and it is so interesting to watch that. I am really enjoying this series. This story moved at a breakneck pace with an intense tone, an action oriented storyline with some character development and one mildly steamy scene as well as vivid characters who make you root for them. I look forward to seeing what happens next! Enjoy!
I love Angela's writing style. This is a great second installment in the series. Jenna continues to bumble her way through her new vampire life and, somehow, manages to get what she wants despite her self-doubt and screwups. While I devour the Blood Vice series like Jenna drains her would-be killer, it's with the growing sense of dread that the series does not go on forever. :) Great job by a talented author.
I still had trouble with Jenna talking about the stress of caring for a teenager while her own behaviors come across like a teen herself and not an adult. So many things go wrong yet she always slips past with no major consequences. I don't know how I feel about the fact that she shuts down like someone pushed the off button when the sun comes up. I keep waiting to see the police experience to show somewhere. She gets attacked and no training helps her be aware or fight back.
The pace picks up with this story and you Jenna and the gang become more cohesive as they navigate the changes and they get some serious changes in this book. I like the character development, I hope to see more of it with Jenna as it appears it might be next book. Love the gang, even though I suspect some of it’s members will need to be left behind for their own good.
So she's a vamp now still trying to work it all out she's trying to still be a police dog handler her twin sister does the day shift for her her canine is really a human when shit goes side ways she's left the police force and then gets offered to help the Fbi who are vamps too
I received this Arc in return for an honest review
What can I say, I love Angela and so far she's never let me down. You fall in love with Jenna and the rest of her little family. I really couldn't put this down, I finished it one day.
I had a hard time putting the book down. Vamps, half vamps, werewolves and humans..OH MY!!!. This series excites me, amuses me and enthralled me. Who would have known how the stories unfold and the plot thickens. I am, happily, of to book 3. Bye for now.
I enjoyed it. But it wasn't as good as the first book. Not nearly as much fasted passed action. I skipped a lot So many details to skip over. Do we really need the step by step of how to a bra off while leaving your top on. Disappointing but I will still get the next book and hope for the best
Great author love reading her books so funny reading how she tries to do right still sort of mess up her heart is in the right place glad her friends and sister backs her up
This second book in the series exceeded my expectations. The difficulties of learning to be a vampire and the criminal activities to be involved in keep things hopping was entertaining!!
Jenna still doesn’t quite know how to be a vampire and now she is trying to track down a serial killer who’s targeting vampires. She has the help of Vin and Mandy, but now Laura is leaving soon. The middle drags a little but exciting ending.
Jenna is still learning about her new life - or death - as a vampire. She gets involved in the serial vampire killer case while trying not to expose herself as a vampling without a sire.
O love this author. I'm gonna read all her stuff!!! The story flows smoothly with great characters. I love the whole world She's created. Can't wait for the third one!!!
