From the old days of mobsters in smoky barrooms plotting to gun down their rivals, to the new age of ordinary people hiring contract killers through the Dark Web, this book depicts the history of assassins and how they work.
While movies portray assassins as glamorous, wealthy and full of mystery, the sober truth is often quite different.
The number of homicides credited to contract killers each year is staggering, and on the rise: business people killing their rivals, organized gang war kills, honor killings and even cold-blooded kills between spouses.
In Blood Money: The Method and Madness of Assassins, RJ Parker documents over a dozen infamous cases of professional assassins including Richard Kuklinski (The Ice Man), Charles Harrelson (Natural Born Killer) and Vincent Coll (Mad Dog).
Included is also a riveting foreword written by Dr. Scott Bonn providing his reasoning why an assassin is not considered a serial killer in the professional community.

I really enjoyed this very informative book about assassins, contract killers or "hitmen." This book covers the history of contract killing, organized crime, as well as other related topics, and features some of the infamous assassins including Mad Dog, Iceman, Goodfella and Bugsy Siegel just to name a few. Also included is a section on female assassins which was very interesting and informative. Dr. Scott Bonn discussed contract killers vs serial killers in the Forward. I highly recommend this book to any true crime fan.
In the comfort of our suburban homes, probably the last thing on our minds is the danger that we might become the target of a contract killer. These low-level thugs who kill for money, though, are more common than the average person realizes. In Blood Money: The Method and Madness of Assassins, author R. J. Parker examines the history of assassins, and how they’ve worked through the centuries. He traces the use of murder-for-hire from biblical times to the present day, with historical profiles of some of the most prolific assassins.
A book that will chill you—as he points out that a significant number of contract murders are arranged by people for revenge or money rather than being related to organized crime—and, hopefully, educate you to the reality of the world in which we live.
Repetitive in places, the prose is a bit choppy, but, the subject is handled with a researcher’s skill. Of particular interest is the author’s analysis of how popular media, TV and movies, portrays professional assassins, and how far the portrayals are from reality.
If you have a strong stomach, but and inquiring mind, it’s a worthwhile read.
Unique and intriguing look at a hidden element of social structure
In the pages of this book, Dr. Parker has managed to slice away the Hollywood stereotype and reveal the true essence of the contract killer. True crime fans will enjoy the fascinating looks at some of the most famous, most prolific, and most efficient contract killers in criminal history.
This book is both informative and entertaining. Some of the featured players had predictably short careers while others remained active for decades. Most of them worked exclusively for organized crime. However, several risked exposure by participating in the drug trade or some other branch of criminal activity.
Excellent read! Loved learning about the difference between serial killers and hitman. Also enjoyed reading about the history of the different hitman through our time. Was surprised in a way that there are still active hitmen out there.
Interesting subject matter, but this book is written at a high school level, and in several places contradicts itself. The layout is inconsistent as well.
