Metal müziğin kitlesini ve onu oluşturan alt toplulukları çerçevelemek, Thrash’ten Black’e daha birçok alt türünü incelemek, boynuzlu şeytan işaretinden müzikteki öfkeye; olmazsa olmazlarını ortaya koymak, üzerine hem şeytani etiketler üzerine yapıştırılmışken hem de nasıl Hristiyan metalin var olabildiğini anlamaya çalışmak, tüm dünyada nasıl farklı algıların oluştuğunu kavramak için çabalamak… İşte bu çizgi romanı hazırlayanların giriştiği çılgın proje!
I go online and I post reviews! You read a lot of books but I read too! So when I'm reading from that paper stack! If it's a good one I'll recommend that! No matter what I will dig in... To a book that I think looks interestin’... I don’t care too much about the format I read comics, some picture books and… Pr-OOOOOOOOOOO-se Pr-OOOOOOOOOOO-se (Sorry Eddie, I just couldn’t resist beginning my review this way) (Yes, I know this isn’t the song I referenced but it’s a hilarious picture)
What’s it about? This is a picture book that goes through some metal history as well as giving people a good idea about what metal music is and it has a lot of great and interesting metal facts!
Why it gets 5 stars: This whole book is very interesting. I always have been attracted to metal music and will always love it (I know some might try saying "it’s a phase" or some bulls*** especially to someone my age but even when I was little I would rather listen to Ozzy Osbourne than Old McDonald so…). It’s just full of awesome metal facts and info! There’s great, cartoony illustrations of metal albums and bands throughout! I was impressed by the wide variety of bands and subgenres covered in this book. It ranges from the times of Black Sabbath to Gojira, as well as including bands ranging from lighter "alternative metal" kinda stuff like Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, etc. to super aggressive stuff like Slayer, Slipknot, Cannibal Corpse, etc. and everything in between! This book is pretty humorous at times. It doesn’t try too hard and it’s not like it’s joke after joke but there’s some jokes here and there that got a chuckle out of me. I like to think I know my metal trivia but I’ll admit I’m not an expert. This book helps you learn all kinds of great stuff about metal and has a lot of facts, not just about bands but metal, music and even a bit about censorship as metal deals with that possibly more than any other music genre.
Warning: I probably don’t even need to say this but just because this is a picture book, that doesn’t mean it’s for kids. Yes, it’s a format that’s usually for kids books but it still includes horror imagery, strong language and some mature subject matter, this is a book about metal after all. (Lamb of God! That must be a nice Christian band!)
Overall: If you’re at all into metal this is a must read. If you know someone who’s into metal, this is a great gift idea. This is a fantastic book that I highly recommend and had lots of fun reading!
Well, the previous "Sharks" wasn't any good, but I didn't know it could be even worse. Let's be simple. This is not a comic book. This is just a portfolio of snippets of heavy metal genres and their bands with poorly redrawn album covers and photos of the bands. For not knowing the audience, there are too many shards of information and none of the leading line through them. For metalheads, I believe all that matter is known. This is just terrible.
A total disaster. It gets many things flatly wrong, like misidentifying Malcolm Young as AC/DC's bassist (he was their rhythm guitarist, something 5 seconds on Google or anyone with a passing respect for the band would be able to tell you) and what is available is easily accessible and explored in greater depth on the internet. Experts learn nothing, novices risk being actively misinformed by the many, inexcusably sloppy mistakes. Stay as far away as possible.
There may not be much here for the ardent, longtime fan to discover, in truth, but this little volume could prove very valuable to the recently converted neophyte looking to find their entry point into the genre.
A decent primer to Metal, although simplistic. It often ends up being simply lists of names, highlighting the fact that the genre/s has far too rich a history to sum up in 200 small pages.
If you're looking for a place to start, you could do a lot worse. If you've been in the scene for years, it's a bit useless.
I learned a lot about metal. There were lots of bands that I personally would not class as metal that I listened to growing up and a lot of bands I listened to as a teen listed in the book. It was a fascinating look at the genre as a whole and the multiple sub genres of metal.
A great little primer on Heavy Metal! If you're looking for an overview of the genre and what major players made it happen, this is a great place to start.
