Since it was D-Day not too long ago, I decided to finally read this retrospect.
This book consists of a number of essays written by distinguished historians, and some actual participants of the events.
Highlights include the contribution of Captain Friedrich Ruge of the German Navy, on the German defensive naval preparations prior to the assault, and in-depth discussions on the influence of logistics during the breakout, Montgomery's strategy around Caen, and the controversy of alleged differences between British and American strategies (i.e. on whether the British wanted to go all out in the Mediterranean, and whether this would have been a better idea than the cross-Channel invasion).
As perhaps the most famous episode of the Second World War, it is useful to be reminded of the great planning and effort that went to make this operation a success, and how things might easily have gone wrong.
