This was one of the better bdsm themed books I've read! She did an excellent job capturing all the emotions and doubts and fears someone would feel going into a relationship like this for the first time. I loved it, and immediately bought the next book to see what happens!

Since the explosion of E.L. James' Twilight-spinoff, Fifty Shades of Grey, the romance novels industry has seen a salacious new boom -- all with stories focusing around the raunchier side of sexual exploration. While I'm always down for some extracurricular activities, sometimes these books can be almost interchangeable down to the characters, plot, and even sex scenes. Because of that, it always feels like a breath of fresh air to come across a BDSM-style book that incorporates more original touches throughout its pages; while there are some elements of Rose Devereux's Descended that follow the trend, there's enough originality within its pages that kept me craving more.

After learning that her boyfriend had been cheating on her, travel writer Sophie Quinn decides to throw herself fully into her work. Her first assignment after her new renaissance? Taking on an assignment to go visit rural France to learn more about the places the notorious Marquis de Sade called home. While, technically, her journalistic integrity is supposed to prevent her from becoming interested in one of her subjects -- Marc, a distant descendant of the Marquis -- she finds herself completely enamored by his charms. It just so happens that Sophie's presence sparks something within Marc that he's tried to hide for years. Exactly what kind of sparks fly when these two come together?

One of the major things that sets Descended apart from the other selections in the genre is that Devereux actually knows how to write. It might be a little bit abrasive of me to say such a thing, but she understands the importance of telling a story. Descended has an actual arc that just so happens to have a bunch of sex, instead of a bunch of sex scenes that are arbitrarily tied together with an extremely loose plot. There's character development and growth within both of the lead characters that flesh them out to be more than slot A for peg B to go into. In a lot of ways, Sophie sticks up for herself and isn't afraid to let her desires be known, which is something that can't be said for a certain Steele-y heroine in a similar series. Along the way, Sophie grapples with some heavy internal dilemmas: what does it mean to be submissive? Who really has the control in these sorts of relationships? Goodbye, porn without plot; hello, philosophical discussions on the merits and drawbacks of BDSM!

Of course, the sex scenes themselves are all really well-written. Quite a few left me feeling somewhat hot under the collar and I might have texted my partner with a few suggestions for upcoming encounters when I visit him later this week. If your book is inspiring its readers to propose certain consensual things with their partners, then pat yourself on the back: you've done a great job of describing the actions and chemistry between your characters. Granted, this book isn't perfect by any means -- I still question the random appearance of Sophie's ex at Marc's Parisian apartment? That exchange could have been held over the phone, really -- but it didn't claim to be anything ground-breaking. All it set out to do was to tell a steamy, intriguing romance.

While I do think there were parts in which Sophie was far too much of the stereotypical "ingenue" role and Marc the "tortured lover with a past" that we saw in Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, there were enough differences in the quality of writing and character development that left me satisfied. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go continue to tease my partner with the prospect of some of the scenes in this book coming to life.

I really liked this one. Heroine goes on assignment to Paris and meets a member of a family she's doing an article on. What happens next is a passion neither of them expected and can't deny. Hero is HOT and dominant. VERY much so. Will it be too much for our heroine or is she just the right submissive he's been looking for? She got on my neves a few times with her uncertainty one minute and gives in the next, but oh well. The sex is HOT and I'm moving on to book 2 next!

There has always been a fascination in the world of science and psychology/philosophy on whether or not nature is stronger than nurture or vice versa. When Rose Devereux wrote Descended, she uses this long standing debate by introducing Sophie Quinn as a reporter who is out to interview the descendant of one the most famous sadist in history, Marc Brayden. Where the story begins as an assignment soon turns into a seduction that can be dangerous for the both of them - Sophie, who had been hurt in the past by trust and deceit, is alone in a strange place must rely on herself, and Marc, a Dominant man with tendencies that could frighten some of the most hardened submissive, tries to keep his distance from the beauty in front of him, only to realize that she calls out to him and he to her. By taking an old often debated subject and making it a basis for her story, then creating a love story from it was ingenious. There is no other way that I can describe the journey I've been through while reading the first part the of the Red Blindfold series other than 'Where's my own red blindfold?'- it was completely unexpected and the sweetest treat I've had the chance to sink my teeth in quite a while. As suspenseful as the story was, it was the type that made my heart race as the characters got together in the same room and tried to deny their attraction for one another. As they got to know their limits or tried to deny who they were, I rooted for them to make it and work with one another - I can't count the number of times I've sighed in disappointment when I needed to get up to get something to eat or prepare a meal for my family, it captivated me that much. The more I read, the more I came to realize that Rose Devereux was and is a great story teller and I can't wait to get my hands on the next instalments of the series and find out how Sophie and Marc's story will end, because one thing is certain, it can't end as it did- there has to be more, readers are left craving more. The Red Blindfold series is one that is a must to add to your to be read list and Rose Devereux an author worth keeping your eye out, I have a feeling that there will be more coming from her that will be just as, if not more, fascinating.

4.5 "Pain is Pleasure & Pleasure is Pain" Stars

This book was just what I needed. After having some duds lately I needed this book in the WORST way! And it is currently a freebie on Amazon! AND IT WILL BE THE BEST FREEBIE YOU GET! I loved this author! Ms. Devereux can write, lemme tell ya! Her writing is so descriptive, I truly felt it. I'm talking in the freakin' room, felt it. WARNING... It ends in a cliffhanger & yes I already bought book 2 & 3! Book 2 & 3 are live, & Book #4 will be released next month. So the premise is that our heroine Sophie is a journalist & our hero Marc is related to the Marquis de Sade the famous sadist. Sophie travels to France to meet the relatives of Sade & interview them as well as research Sade's writings & photograph the famous places in France relative to Sade.

This Book. GAH. I loved it, I hated it. It was the absolute hottest thing I've read this month! I was hooked in the prologue on page 2! O.M.G. this man, Marc. At first he was so dreamy, then sexy as all get out. Then at the end I wanted to wring his beautiful neck! The more dominate he got, the more he pissed me off. Sometimes in a good way, sometimes not so much. This chick Sophie did get on my nerves a little though. She was "RULED" by her body. Ok I know the dude is the bomb, but really?? She is the only reason it's not a 5*. OK, but in all fairness with a man like Marc, I might be "ruled" by my body too.

Descendent is the story of the sexual awakening of a young woman during a business trip to France. As a journalist, Sophie Quinn is writing a story about the Life of Marquis De Sade, a French aristocrat notorious for sexual cruelty acts in his writings as well as his life.
She meets Marc Brayden, a direct descendent of the famous sadist, and quickly becomes caught up and enthralled in his world of kink. Her sexual awakening is like walking through the pages of a how to manual on The Introduction to BDSM.
Sophie is done with men. Done with dating. 1 time bitten 100 times shy. So, no one is more surprised than she when she does the unthinkable and just go with it – a sexual relationship with the gorgeous Marc Brayden.
Where it falls short: it gets too serious and mysterious around the life of Marc. His fear comes from his desire to hurt people; another mystery he introduces. I did expect more and a better explanation. With a cliffhanger ending, perhaps we will understand the mystery in the next book.
It has all the familiar ingredients of erotica with BDSM and its assembled with great skill. The story is inventive based around the infamous Marquis De Sade. Its complete with great sex and dirty talk. If you are looking for a vivid picture of hot romance with steamy sex and bouts of public display of sexual tension - you will not be disappointed. It also paints a beautiful picture of touring Paris.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I loved the idea of it being about descendant of the most notorious sadist in history. The reader follows Sophie’s journey in a whole new world. It has in instant appeal, but there are also doubts.
And that twist at the end. i am going to read the next book.

5 SCORCHING STARS SERIES

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. But I've downloaded the three books. The series is a keeper.

As an erotic romance author – therefore an experienced reader and writer in the genre - my honest opinion is: – this series is AMAZINGLY HOT. It’s got well-written erotica, an interesting plot, multi-layered characters. Just be warned you won’t want to put it down once you’ve started so don’t do like me and try to read it before bedtime because you will NOT fall asleep. LOL
Last piece of advice if I may – warn your boyfriend/husband you’ll be having some steamy encounters in the near future because Descended will leave you breathless and wanting some action of your own.

This was a really good dark read that I liked. This was a the first time I have read this author. Marc is related to the Marquis de Sade the famous sadist. Sophie travels to France to meet the relatives of Sade and interview him as well as research Sade's writings & photograph the famous places in France relative to Sade. This was a good read and the D/s was OK. I didn't like that the book left off on a cliffhanger. The book had a few errors in it. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Sophie travels to do an expose on the Marquis de Sade and has the chance to interview one of his descendants. Marc is a scorching hot bossy man that enraptures Sophie introducing her to a lifestyle that he for a long time has resisted himself. They are sizzling together, but Sophie is scared of what he makes her feel. I enjoyed this part of their story and can't wait to read more.

I give Descended 4 hearts!

This is the first book that I have read from this author. I've read many BDSM books and although I don't indulge in the lifestyle it intrigues me. I found with this book the storyline flipped and flopped a bit when it came to Marc, the dominant, and Sophie, the submissive. Marc seemed to be a really selfish man when it came to the wants and needs of Sophie and I found him to be more sadist than dominant. I Really didn't like him much and I struggled to relate to him. Sophie seemed to be very indecisive with all aspects of her life. The jury is still out with how I feel about her. I felt some of the situations that Sophie was placed in was only added for shock value and didn't really flow with the storyline.

In my opinion, if the author had just done a bit more research into the Dom/sub lifestyle and their contractual agreements this would have been, for me, a 5 star read.

I still want to know what happens in the prologue. What happens to Sophie when she was left there with a blindfold on?

I'll definitely read book 2 in this series.

Rose really knows how to set a scene. You're there. And you feel what the heroine feels. The anticipation. The temperature of the room. The dampness of panty gussets.
E-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g.

And speaking of anticipation, this book had me shivering in anticipation, licking my lips, crossing and un-crossing legs, and sitting on the edge of my seat.

WE NEEEEEED TO COME, MARC. WHEN ARE YOU GONNA LET US!?!?
But that anticipation is half the fun sometimes.

Every sex scene served to dig Sophie deeper into her submission while at the same time tunneling deeper into Marc's dominant nature. He transformed bit-by-bit in every single scene.
And as soon as the plot got extremely thick...
BAM!!!!
The reader was shuttled over a cliff into the land of
WHAT THE FUCK?

Good thing book #2 is out as I'm gonna go find out What the Fuck.

After that ending, I went from being absolutely smitten with Marc to not knowing how I should feel about him....

Not quite sure how I feel about this book. Most of the story was great, kept me intrigued. I liked that fact she was a journalist and was researching some old history. However I was hoping there would be more details about Sade and his life.

I guess it was the BDSM that was off putting. He’s suppose to be this experienced Dom, yet he’s not really explaining things to her well or doing much to earn the necessary trust for that type of relationship. She doesn’t know anything of the lifestyle and he’s expecting her to obey his every command right from the beginning. Also, what was up with the scene with the ex-boyfriend showing up? And then just walking away? I feel as if that could have been a phone conversation. Not him just showing up in Paris out of the blue because he’s jealous. Im not sure I will continue with the next book.

This was my first time reading a book by this author. If dark, psychological twisted, D/s erotica is your thing then I suggest getting this book. Keep in mind that this series contains three books with a cliff hanger at the end of this book. I loved the complex character of Marc. He was conflicted with his deep desire to Dominant and using it to hide his true feelings and emotions. Sophie is instantly attracted to Marc but fears losing her heart to him with each passing day. She doesn't want to stop the best experience of her life only to be shattered knowing it is only casual. I enjoyed the author's interwoving of true life history with the fictionals characters in this series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am excited to read book two and three if the series.

Good but confusing

This book played a lot of mind tricks that I still have not wrapped my brain around. I'm hoping with the next books coming that I can get a better understanding. It does seem that the heroine is ignorant to how this relationship should work out. She is scared but thrilled and won't admit it. It does feel that the hero is too harsh but he is only giving her what she asks for. Nothing more and nothing less.

One heck of an emotional ride!

This is the first book in the trilogy and I must say I was captivated from the very beginning. This story has it all, witty characters, risqué sex scenes, and a lot of psychological warfare between Marc and Sophie. The reader will experience every raw emotion there is. Hold all to your seat and get ready to take the ride of your life. Well done Rose. I'm looking forward to book two.

OMG, Too Good for Words

Brilliantly written book. If you are interested in seeing into the mind or behavior of a Dominant male as he draws in a naturally submissive woman, with zero experience in D/s, then read this. It reached in and grabbed my heart and hasn't let go yet (a 3 book series). For less than a matinee, you can have hours of suspenseful entertainment. I love these characters.

Omg. What a fantastic story. As I write this review I will not tell you about the story, but will say, it is dark and will probably get darker in the next book. It is a cliff hanger and you will want to read the next one to see what happens. This is the first book I have read from Rose Devereux and it will not be the last. She has you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what happens next. Enjoy the book.

Awesome Start!!

This is a new author for me and I'm so glad I took the chance!!! She is awesome! Marc keeps you on your toes wondering how far he will go. How far will Sophie let him go. Rose threw a twist at the end on Sophie, now I want the next book to see how Sophie handles it and just to see how far Marc will go. Definitely a recommended read.

I enjoyed the way Marc spoke. So often I read books where the men are closed off or very short with their answers. I liked the way he would hold conversations and put thought into his answers.

5 blindfold me stars!! What a sexy, kinky, and wild book! I loved every second of it!

Sophie is given an opportunity to interview Marc, an heir to the most infamous sadist in history. And while she’s prepared she has no clue that the minute she meets him, he’ll change her world, let alone fall for the man. Marc is intrigued by her but he wants no part of being around her because she brings out the dominant in him and he knows that could be dark and dangerous. But we all know he can’t resist her for long…..and he doesn’t. I have nothing but amazing things to say about this book. I read it in one sitting and I couldn’t put it down to do anything. I had to know what was going to happen next! This is the first book I’ve read of Rose’s but I will say I’ll be reading more from her in the future!!! Not to mention after that ending I need to know what is going to happen next!

I am so on the fence with this book, not something I'm used to once I've finished a story.

On one hand, Sophie and Marc's story starts of pretty interesting and intriguing, she's in Paris on assignment to learn and write about a direct descendent of Marc's who was a notorious sadist some 200 years ago. They of course have an instant attraction, but I found Sophie to be confusing when it came to what the heck she really wanted from Marc. It was a bit bizarre when her friend shared information with Sophie's ex, didn't honestly think that particular scene fit into the story. What I'm so on the fence about is the darkness of this book once you hit about a third of the way through it. I mean this is FSOG on steroids, and I ended up feeling really anxious during parts of the book, especially at the end. I guess that would be considered great writing from the author, and although there were some grammar and spelling errors along with some WTH moments, I would agree that the author definitely took you to a different place with this story. That's why I ended up giving this book a 4 star rating instead of lower. Just because it made me extremely uncomfortable with what Marc was doing to Sophie, doesn't mean it was a bad book, just means it's really not for me. I just couldn't find the underlying "romance" between these two to make me want to continue on to the next book. I can take some BDSM in the books I read, but this is the start of some pretty hard core stuff in the next book, which is where I get off. If you like that stuff in the books you read, then this is the book for you, because it really does have some pretty hot and sexy scenes in it.
