Fire in the Mind

Rate this book
A victim engulfed in flames. A psychic series of clues. Can a PhD with incredible mental powers stop a real-life firestarter?

Years after a tragic car accident claimed his fiancée, Dr. Leonard "Len" Wise is just coming to terms with his demons. Now sober, the countless drunken nights helped him cope with the pain while he studied his newly-acquired psychic abilities. When a friend enlists him to deliver a lecture on parapsychology, he never expected it to end with a strange invitation: a police consult on a case of spontaneous human combustion.

With no-nonsense Detective Bill McGee by his side, Len deduces the victim may have been murdered by someone with similar abilities to his own. But when an enchanting suspect catches fire before his eyes, the PhD becomes the prime suspect. To clear his name and protect the people he loves, Len must take his powers to the next level before he too is engulfed in flames.

Fire in the Mind is the first book in the Doctor Wise series of paranormal mysteries.

A very interesting book. Dr Leonard Wise an expert in Parapsychology returneds to New Jersey and his old college where his old friend is the assistant Dean and has set him up to give a lecture. It is well received and shortly afterwards he is asked by a Detective Sgt to help the police on a believed arson case. Then the fun begins. A very good red and well worth the time to read.

This is one of the best books I have read recently. I can honestly say it is among one of my favorites. In some respects it might be formulaic to some readers but to me it was just fun, exciting, enlightening, and just an overall joy to read. I found that once I started the book when I finally put it down I had managed to get through roughly 50% of it. I can say in all honesty that is not something I do unless the book truly captures my attention and interest. This book did both of those things and then some.
I found the character of Len to be fun, endearing, sad, intelligent, inspiring, and oddly relatable. His physical capabilities did not deter him from using his mental abilities to do what needed to be done. It didn’t prevent him from helping Detective McGee solve a most unusual crime. Nor did they prevent him from helping his best friend’s wife when she was in a dangerous situation.
I honestly cannot say enough about this book, I can say too much and I don’t want to give away all of the twists in this book. All I can say is you are interested in reading a book that delves into the powers of the mind, as well as just being a good crime thriller, this is one you need to pick up and read. I honestly cannot wait until I can get my hands on the second book in this series!!

Fire in Mind is an incredible book written by Arjay Lewis! This book drew me in from the very first page and I admit I had a very difficult time putting it down. The plot was very well developed and had a very nice twists hidden within that the author unraveled throughout the story. The pace of the book was just plain perfect. There was always something happening and left me never feeling like the book was dragging out. On the other hand the author never rushed me through the story either. The "murder mystery" he wrote is very well done and I really enjoyed this book a lot.

Len is an extremely likable character and you can't but just be in his fan club. Even though he has a physical handicap due to an accident in his past, he does not let that stop him from trying to solve the "whose done it" in this story. He becomes quite the assets to the police actually. This story kept him on his toes the entire way.

I for one am a fan and will DEFINITELY pick up the other 2 books in the series! This one was absolutely fantastic and a very enjoyable read. Can't wait for more and I sure hope the author is working on more books for this series!

Dr Leonard Wise is returning to his hometown of Mountainview, New Jersey, there to deliver a lecture on his postgraduate research into parapsychology. As an impecunious early-career academic and old friend of Mountainview University’s Associate Dean, he is in no position to turn the gig down. But Mountainview holds unhappy memories for Len, as his friends call him. And on top of that, the local police are needing help on a case involving a mysterious fatal fire….

‘Fire In The Mind’ is the first book in Arjay Lewis’s ‘Doctor Wise’ series, and what an excellent introduction it is. We are soon drawn into events in Mountainview which, as Len soon deduces, cannot be put down to your run-of-the-mill arsonist. As the story progresses, we learn more about Len and his unhappy backstory.

Lewis’s writing flows un-fussily; his descriptive prose is clear, his dialogue realistic. The plot unfolds satisfyingly, with set-piece action scenes that keep you turning the pages. We soon identify with Len, who is an engaging first-person narrator, and we are introduced to supporting characters whose fate we care about.

Needless to say – for any paranormal investigation – there are dead ends, red herrings and people hiding secrets, all of which add to the fun. And it IS fun, too; ‘Fire In The Mind’ is a tremendously entertaining read throughout. I thoroughly recommend it and intend to explore the rest of the series!

Fire In The Mind: Doctor Wise Book 1, my fourth from author Arjay Lewis. In my first read from him, The Vanishing, I commented that his writings were reminiscent of the writing of Ted Dekker & Stephen King. Another captivating, page-turning, well-written thriller with a touch of supernatural suspense leaving you panting for more. “I received a Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it, in fact, I went out & bought it. I eagerly look forward to reading more from this author and as this is the first in a twelve-book series I'll have no difficulty there. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

😜 Interesting

Interesting read. I love the way it "legitimized" Paracycology, allowing the reader to understand more fully how it can be used for real & just not cheap parlor tricks.

I come from a world where one foot is in this world while my other foot is in the "other" world so this is normal for myself as well as many others.

To have it explained so well in the book is an excellent way to let other readers see how it can be used with training & practice.

Thank you Arjay Lewis. Good read. 😸

I downloaded this free from Smashwords.com.

I enjoyed this book, my only complaint being it is in EPUB format while my eyes work better with PDF. Altho it did not strike me as particularly original, the material was handled with skill and freshness. It would make an interesting movie. I appreciate the aptness of the title, being about telekinesis and human combustion. Interesting characters make for a rewarding reading experience.

I finished ‘Fire In The Mind’ at about 5 am this morning. This wasn’t a speedy read, because I wanted it to ‘not’ be one. It promised a tale of things unseen and only felt, of things no one believes in. It took on a journey that ‘you’ would have to each one travel your own self. A truly intriguing tale.
Do you like getting the willies when someone/something startles/frightens you? You’ll enjoy this tale.
Thank you Arjay Lewis.

Fire in the Mind is the first book in the Doctor Wise series of paranormal mysteries. It is a unique novel. It kept me spellbound from page one to the very last word! The tension and relationships are beautifully written and will keep readers coming back for more. I got chills up my spine more than once. I can't wait to see what happens next. I gave this honest, voluntary review after being given a free copy of the novel.

An excellent book worth reading. Arjay's writing kept the story in motion and made me able to visualize the characters and actions. The story kept me entertained. I am glad that Dr Wise character being telekinetic was written as not being weird or annoying. He was written in a way that you like him. I enjoyed his journey through the story.

We wonder how the hero will win, but that is what heros do.

Len is an expert in Parapsychology—he can control energy. He is persuaded to help in a police investigation.
The story rattles along at a good pace, the characters are all well developed and believable.
Len learns as much about himself as he does the villian he it trying to foil. A series that promises much.

A page burner. Sorry for the pun.

The concept of the plot is a little different, but I liked that. A paranormal story that Is truly be a page turner. I gave four stars because the book is imaginative and enjoyable to read. I don't usually choose a book with paranormal activity but this one is a winner. Read and enjoy.

I enjoyed the parapsychology element of this book. It was not so hokey as to be unbelievable. I look forward to reading Mr. Lewis's second installment of Dr. Wise adventures, "Seduction in the Mind".
