The fourth omnibus of classic Planet of the Apes novels. When men discovered that the Planet of the Apes was their own Earth, it was only the beginning of the most incredible adventure of all time… VISIONS FROM NOWHERE Stranded on an unknown planet, astronauts Bill Hudson, Jeff Allen, and Judy Franklin are assaulted by fantastic visions that render them helpless. When Judy vanishes and Bill is captured by an army of bloodthirsty gorillas, they realize they’ve entered a world where apes rule and mankind lives under a leash… ESCAPE FROM TERROR LAGOON Bill Hudson and Jeff Allen seek the aid of chimp scientists Cornelius and Zira to locate their wrecked spaceship, unaware a group of angry apes have already set out to stop them. But this is the least of their worries when their search takes them to the lagoon of a flesh-eating mutant monster… MAN, THE HUNTED ANIMAL Bill Hudson and Jeff Allen receive an urgent message from Judy Franklin, who has become a captive goddess of the Underdwellers. Volcanic lava threatens to detonate the Underdwellers’ atomic reactor, and the astronauts’ laser is the only hope of staving off total destruction of the planet.
insane amount of typos - made me think the stories were scanned from the original books but no mistakes were fixed. plot was pretty interesting although the characters were a little flat, especially the preexisting characters like Dr Zaius, Zira, and Cornelius. Zira is reduced to a stereotypical woman who does nothing but worry and rely on her husband, of course the more level-headed and logical one. Zira is never actually shown doing science work while Cornelius gets to bro out over inventions with the protagonists. The original characters were not great either. The antagonist, General Urko, is so extremely one note I found myself zoning out during all his dialogue because it was all the same (kill all humanoids etc). The protagonists....where do I even begin. Judy, an astronaut, is also reduced to a relatively passive woman role when she's kidnapped by a cult and needs the men to even think about escaping. Bill and Jeff have no traits other than the fact that Bill is white and Jeff is black. Hey did you know Jeff was black? Don't worry, the author will mention his skin colour on every other page for you! Sometimes, instead of referring to Jeff's name or job, the author will just refer to him as "the black". Great! All in all the stories had interesting plots and some interesting implications for the larger universe. But the writing was just not good enough and reduced all the characters to stereotypes.
