DARKNESS COMES TO THE DC UNIVERSE WITH THE MYSTERY OF THE FORGE! Aquaman, The Flash and more of DC’s pantheon of heroes suspect Batman of hiding a dark secret that could threaten the very existence of the multiverse! It’s an epic that will span generations-but how does it connect to the origins of one of DC’s most legendary heroes?
The great comics event of summer 2017 is about to begin courtesy of superstar writers Scott Snyder and James Tynion III and illustrated by a master class of comics artists: Andy Kubert, Jim Lee and John Romita Jr.! You do not want to miss this one!
Scott Snyder is the Eisner and Harvey Award winning writer on DC Comics Batman, Swamp Thing, and his original series for Vertigo, American Vampire. He is also the author of the short story collection, Voodoo Heart, published by the Dial Press in 2006. The paperback version was published in the summer of 2007.
The only thing that kept me from rating Dark Days: The Forge five stars is John Romita Jr.'s art. You'd know that those are his pages. Other than that, I have an absolute blast reading this! The surprises and the returning characters re-introduced in this issue are overwhelmingly good. I'm now pumped to experience this DC event!
Dark Days: The Forge comes with a beautiful foil cover (90s coming back?) drawn by Jim Lee.
With all the issues solicited for the Dark Days (which is a prelude to DC Metal), clearly it is a Bat-centric story. Oh the things that Scott Snyder plants in the story. The questions he asks, which are certainly not as huge as DC Rebirth's, is full of intrigue and jawdropping mystery.
What a way to set up a story, very good job. If they go with a completely new multiverse, a dark multiverse, reading the Multiversity would be useless, but if they just reveal a dark Earth from the 7 Earths we know nothing about, then reading the Multiversity was a great recommendation. We will see anyway, I doubt we will know anything for sure until we reach the first issue of dark nights metal.
Color me intrigued! Romita's art was probabaly the only downer (specifically Superman's face, which almost made me laugh). But man, Snyder knows cliffhangers.
This would just pop up in my YouTube recs every now and then and i have been avoiding those videos as to not spoil myself but not anymore. I know there must be a thousand arcs leading to this and i didnt read any of them. But honestly i dont care. I just want to enjoy some good comic books.
Great prelude to the upcoming Metal event. Anything that Jim Lee draws on, I'm in. And Snyder is always great at crafting stories. Of course this was a tiny bit confusing and left us hanging, but remember it's only the prequel to the big event. Can't give away too much. The only downside I saw to this was some of the art. I'm not really familiar with Romita's art so I'm suspecting it was his work. I never thought I would ever say this in a sentence, but Superman looked like a sleazy car salesman. DID NOT LIKE!!
* James Tynion and Scott Snyder's brain child ergo strong story . * set up to what appears to be an intriguing mystery . * Batman heavy ,so Batman fans will be excited. * * Links of the story with all the previous Tynion and Snyder work make for a cool easter egg * The LAST PAGE !!
Ok, seriously?!! I'm definitely intrigued :) We're seeing some major players, with a lot of hints and clues to the new story.. I'm sure we haven't seen nothing yet, and that a lot will still be happening in the coming months I like!
Also the art is probably one of the best I've seen after Rebirth..
I'm a fan and I'll be following this story very closely ;)
Scott Snyder's strength, at least when it comes to writing Batman, is crafting an epic story, and boy is this one epic. And to think that it's just a prelude to Dark Nights- Metal!
Scott and James have not only brought back some of the fan-favourites back but have also tied the story back to Scott's New 52 Batman run. The mist around the mysterious elements- Electrum from Court of Owls storyline and Dionesium from Endgame storyline has also been cleared a bit.
I also liked the meta nature of Batman telling his suit to compensate, as this has been a source of criticism on Scott's Batman, rather Batman in general, that he uses his gadgets and suits for over-compensating his shortcomings.
Suffice is to say that this issue has done what it was supposed to do, on to Dark Days: The Casting next.
Ok so apparently there were two issues that precede Dark Nights Metal. “Dark days the forge” and “Dark days the casting”. So Dark Nights Metal #1 is not the beginning of the event! Dammit I don’t like it when DC does stuff like this it’s so aggravating. But nonetheless there is some cool mythology being built here, that will probably end up polarizing DC fans. But I like what I’m getting. This could finally end up being a good Hawkman story
Deliciously mysterious, and mostly incomprehensible except for...well, Bats is at it again, messing around with things he shouldn't, and we all know that the best other DC storyline emerged from such a tendency, so hell yes, looking forward to what this leads to, eagerly!
I had no clue this event was starting till a week ago.
I picked it up because I like Snyder and Batman, but wasn't pumped for it or anything
What I discovered is this massive!
There's a lot going on here and it looks like Snyder is putting a lot into this!
In the first issues there's a mystery over something Batman is hiding. Already Hawkman, Green Lantern, Superman, and Joker come into play. It's universe spanning and sounds like cosmic proportions.
And there was a monitor device from Crisis on Infinite Earths (I know there's been other stories with these things but aside from infinite crisis idk what the continuity is with them).
All in all there was a lot to chew on and it was only 1 of two preludes to the actual event.
I'm now super excited but , given the actual event ("metal") starts in august, am curious how this will bump heads with Geoff Johns Countdown Clock event in November? Maybe they'll get it all out before then? Maybe not...
Two Big Events at once!

Dark Days: The Forge #1 may take a few pages to get into, but once the ball starts rolling the creative team deliver an intriguing prelude. In doing so, not only do they tease at the possible directions the Dark Nights: Metal event could go in, but they also give us a gripping set of events that are sure to leave readers eager for more.
Interesting , if puzzling, beginning to an intriguing new series. Great writing and character consistency, down to the Joker's mangled face. I'm glad I bought them both!
Okay so this has me seriously confused and seriously excited, this has immediately introduced so many factors, and I bet Scott and Gregg were planning this from the beginning of the New 52, the only downside for me is John Romita Jr's art, like it isn't bad, but it isn't good, if he was the only artist, I could ignore it but his art besides Jim Lee's make its badness stand out more. Other than that I really loved this and can't wait to see how it all ties in.
Snyder and Capullo are working on Batman together again and that's a good enough reason to start this series. I'm not a huge Multiverse fan, but I am jumping in on this series and this one shot is definitely worth it.
very excited to continue this! great story introduction filled with intrigue, involving many characters and many angles. mystery, mayhem, & marvel, they're all here. only downer is the art, otherwise this is 5 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟!
I love the art. The beginning to something I never thought of putting together. One of the things I love about Batman. There's thinking outside of the box, but then there's thinking outside of reality. That's Batman.
Batman's run on the new 52 was one of the few titles from the unnecessary relaunch that I really enjoyed. Having read all 52 issues of it, I can safely say Scott Snyder is a great writer, and I trust him whenever I see him credited in a title, it's an immediate pick-up for me. And the Forge is no exception. Also written by James Tynion IV, another good writer. This is a set-up for a larger crossover event (Metal) and as such, does a great job on establishing a large amount of characters that will no doubt take part in this story, but I hope it doesn't go crazy with the storylines and characters. The art is done by many artists, being Jim Lee, who does a great job as always; Andy Kubert, also pretty good and love the colorist's job on his art; and John Romita Jr, who at times is good and other times is...odd looking. But the purpose of his art comes through clearly. The revelation at the end didn't feel as impactful as the comic wants to, and as a cliff-hanger for the next issue is kinda weak. Nonetheless, it does the job and I'm excited to see how everything will develop through many, MANY tie-ins and the core series' six-issue run. Current DC Comics is doing a great job...
