Main Couple: Yuan Zong - Xia Yao Supporting Couples: Peng Ze - Li Zhenzhen; Xuan Da Yu - Wang Zhishui
Synopsis: Sergeant Xia Yao, born into a wealthy and renown ancestry, is a playboy who has turned over a new leaf. Yuan Zong is an ex soldier from the special forces who opened a bodyguard training company after being discharged.
When Yuan Ru, Yuan Zong's sister fell for Xia Yao's charms, but could not break down his erected barriers, she came to Yuan Zong for assistance. Little did she know, the moment Yuan Zong saw Xia Yao, this ex-special force knew no other person would ever catch his eye.
And so begins the battle between brother and sister for the most coveted price - Xia Yao's heart.
Excerpt:
"Brother, I'm falling for a guy, again."
Obviously, the repetition of this situation was given away by the word "again".
"But I'm unable to gain his love. Please make him like me. You are the only trustworthy man who can help me."
I haven't completely finished this book because it is still being translated, but I have caught up with what has been translated so far. Once the story gets updated/translated I will continue to read it. I may need to continually update this review. That is the only side-effect.
I picked this book up because I watched the Chinese drama adaption of it. Because of censorship, the tv show is A LOT different than the book, so I wanted to see the work in it's original form, and I really like it! It's really interesting in seeing just how much was changed from the book in order for the TV show to pass censorship.
In terms of the plot, the story is hilarious because of how unrealistic it is. Maybe it's a cultural thing, or maybe the plot is just absurd. In the beginning, Yuan Zong uses a parrot to like seduce Xia Yao's parrot, and the parrot's like converse with each other. Plus Yuan Zong stalks Xia Yao, who is a police officer haha. It's just a lot of little things which make the story interesting and entertaining.
In terms of the romance, I liked it? It is a slow burner because Xia Yao hates Yuan Zong at first but then he wants to spend more time with him but Xia Yao is tsundere haha. Plus once the romance gets started, it doesn't stop. I am interested in seeing how the side-characters romance will develop so I am looking forward to those translated chapters.
Overall, I liked this book. I'm not sure if I would recommend it because I do think that readers would have to suspend their disbelief in order to truly like this book like I did. It really helped that I watched the TV show first too. I liked it and I may even read it again!
I can't deal with this translation. I'll mark it as read and drop it for now. I don’t know why the translator keeps inserting their opinions mid-sentence, it's spoiling the story. Unnecessary comments everywhere. I don’t get it. Way too much fangirling, and I’m not even halfway through the book.
The intrigue of this story is well-woven like all the other stories written by Miss Jidan, however, for me, this is the most disappointing book... past the chapter 113, there started to be more nonsense and less genuine development, the story became unrealistic and ridiculous in a very bad way. This is what comes out of writing about three couples at the same time, at some point there would be shortcomings.
I admit it, I laughed a lot, the author's sense of humor is as great as it is in any of her novels. I have nothing to say about her style.. my problem lies solely within her choice of some scenes. I can't understand the purpose of some passages as they lower the level of the general story and contradict everything known and said about the characters. The behavior of some characters (mainly Yuan Zong's) in some scenes is conflicting, it doesn't answer to the personality of the character and his morals.
Considering the side characters, I think that Li Zhen Zhen (from Peng Ze's constant complaining about everything that Zhen Zhen is and does) and Wang Zhi Shui's 'wise foolishness' are the better drawn.. Until the end, I felt there is still a lot to learn about Peng Ze and Xuan Da Yu.
The translation I read for the final chapters is a total mess, so I expect to read a better one. Once done, I will edit this review and adjust the rating that I already know for sure won't be more than 3 stars.
REVIEW EDITED ON 08/31/2020:
As expected, my rating won't be higher; it will be lower. I lower it for the reason that I lost interest in the story and decided to drop this third read completely. The remaining chapters (past the chapter 170) kept dragging on and on so much so that I've lost all interest in re-reading them, no matter how better the translation is.
All things considered, now I understand the awful ending in the drama. You can't do miracles when the ending is equally awful in the novel!
One of the worst, most ridiculous books I've ever read. I understand the concept of fiction, tropes, and suspending disbelief, but come on! All the worst tropes and characteristics of the so called BL genre crammed into one work. And I mean ALL OF THEM. Cranked to 100%. Ridiculous plots, fake, weird, unnecessary drama, morbid obsession with sexual roles and stereotyping to the extreme, very weird take on anatomy and physiology, shallow characters, seriously creepy, unrealistic dialogues, super creepy, stalkerish top with borderline abusive behaviour, rapey undertones, rapey overtones, straightforward rape in some instances, rampant homophobia and misogyny, and much more! Delightful. I don't think the author had a single interaction with a normal human being in her life. I DNFed at 2/3 and just skimmed some chapters and the ending after that. I only read as far because the premise seemed fun and there were some scenes where the MCs were really good, caring, sweet, and funny. I can maybe give additional half star for that. HOWEVER, there was just too much if the bad stuff. Such a shame.
Awesome entertainment. Charismatic couple. Action packed story with enough mush and smex in the mix although realism might be tad bit wonky. The courting part was really fun especially in the beginning. That man was super persistent, super superglue-type, super patient, super caring, super doting, super passionate and importantly... a super beast in bed. That uke has no way of escaping such a perfect man and he even cooks like a 5-star chef! And and and looks like a supermodel. What more could you ask for? Come here my McDreamy! Muaks!

Came across this Chinese BL novel when I saw its web drama adaptation on Youtube. The show was titled as Advance Bravely but the drama is still ongoing though. I saw the first few episodes and it caught my interest enough to read the novel since I can't wait for the next episodes to be ready for viewing.
Take a look at these 2 cuties:
Aren't they to die for? SO cute!
I think some fans are translating the Chinese novel into English. Not sure if the translation is complete or if the quality is any good but if you are interested, do check it out.
In a nutshell: Sexist, mysoginistic, rape-y. Animal cruelty included in package. Themes that should have been left in the 90s are all over the place. Heck, even authors who used to glorify rape as romantic in the 70s have adjusted to the changing times, but not this author. She doesn't think consent is hot. She also thinks it's cute to talk about relationship problems with everyone BUT your own partner.
I landed on this web novel because I liked the drama adaptation (which I found because I couldn't get enough of Word of Honor, and saw that Simon Gong had starred in Advance Bravely as well). Turns out that this is one of the very rare times when THE DRAMA IS ACTUALLY BETTER THAN THE NOVEL. I managed to finish this because I wanted to know what happened to the side characters. Felt nothing but relief after I was done (200+ chapters, seemed like my IQ dropped by 10 points with every paragraph), then promised myself never to touch another one of Chai Jidan's works until she reaches the gold standards set by Priest, MXTX, Cang Wu Bin Bai, and Meatbun. I sincerely hope that the young girls reading this story don't take relationship advice from it.
Este es mi libro favorito ✨ lo puedo leer un sin fin de veces y jamás me voy a cansar. Solo diré que Yuan Zong es un amor de persona y me encanta como trata a Xia Yao ❤️
I just found out about this while browsing through Gong Jun's filmography (How many gay dramas is he in anyway?), the drama is ridiculous so I'd expect the book to be even worse.
I watched the TV drama first and wanted to see how different it was from the original text because the rival body guard group was defeated so easily in the TV series, it seemed like there was a lot of missing plot.
As expected, the TV series is missing an extra main character, almost the entire plot of dealing with the rival body guard group, and a lot of the romance. That being said, I think the TV series did a great job in editing this book down. They chose most of the best moments from the book and followed the overall plot well. If they had just added a little more to really deal with the rival body guard group properly, it absolutely would have been satisfying enough just to watch the TV series.
Overall, the novel was good to read for the extra plot and romance, but in my opinion this book needed some serious editing down. There are just so many extra plots that have nothing to do with the main characters or central plotline, and even the romance starts to feel repetitive. If you are just looking to fill in the blanks from the drama, you can skim a lot of this book and that's satisfying enough.
If you are coming into this without watching the TV Drama...I would suggest watching the drama first to make sure you are really interested, especially since this book is so long. Plus, as others have mentioned, this book is absolutely ridiculous and self indulgent which is totally fine, but you might want to make sure it's to your taste before getting in too deep.
4/5 Sometimes too long and too boring. Scenes that didn’t make sense and the relationship between one of the bodyguards with one of the main leads i seriously hate it...
3 is too little, 4 too much tbh. I did like this more than Counterattack. Yuan Zong is way less toxic than CC. He's also a virgin and only has eyes for Xia Yao. He's pretty but no playboy. Also very bratty and mischievous+dramatic. It's really funny. didn't like the side relationships and I don't understand why XY broke up with YZ. there was a LOT stuff happening and the story was way too long imo. The ending was a bit weird. his mother is leaving now that she's not needed anymore and went to live with his dad. I'm glad there were some extra chapters after that.
I can’t believe people actually like this book, praised it and favorited with endearment. This book was incredibly immensely utterly toxic. There were so many triggers, so many, and nasty bizarre terrible shit happening in this I couldn’t even fathom how the author thought it was enjoyable and even cute?? This was garbage. I skimmed so much. I’ll watch the drama adaption for my boy Gong Jun and the fact that it seems better than the book but wow, this sucked. 💩
People either love or hate this book because it is quite a unique writing style. I,definitely like it.though there were really not great plot line but the joke in the book make me LMAF.
I have never laugh so hard, this book was so much fun to Just past time. Now that I it's finish must go take care of my school work. Trustfully I was not in a good place mentally when I picked up this book but thank to the characters met in this work I was j able to laugh, vent and slowly finish This.
Lots of drama, plenty of laughs, a few tears, lots of plotting and revenge-seeking...
A complete and immersive read that fills in the gaps of the heavily censored drama series. After reading this I completely understand why the plot never fully made sense in the series because there is no way to tell this story and make it past China's filming restrictions.
First - a big thanks to Ann on Wattpad for translating this to English and sharing it.
What a bizarre story with really mercurial yet fascinating characters. I did enjoy it even if some of the chapters and side stories were looney, but I loved the main couple and their romance. The sex scenes were hot as hell too. Now off to see the drama!
This is also one of those novels which I read after watching the drama with the same name. I just portrayed those characters played by the actors while reading the story and it was worth it. Loved the two protagonists (Yuan Zong and Xia Hao).
Umm...this maybe the most convoluted hilarious(ly bad) thing I've read but I didn't hate it. It's ridiculous and over the top but it was still compelling enough to read to the end (maybe to see how much worse it would get lol).
They way this story had me HOOKED. Loved it. Would almost get a 5⭐️ if it wasn’t for the fact that there was some SA that was “casually” put in here and there that I wasn’t thrilled with. But the main couples story I loved.
I fear I’ve gone blind. Sir, please put it back in your pants I promise you have more self control than that🙏. How they ever managed to adapt this into a drama is beyond me, but we love Gong Jun so whatever.
