من منا لم يسبق له بأن حدث واسترسل في حديث مع شخص ما( غريب)...قد يكون بمواصلة عامة، عيادة طبيب، جهة حكومية، أو ربما حتى في طائرة..

هذا المفهوم هو الذي تريد Kio أن تحكي لنا بخصوصه عن تجربتها الشخصية؛ في أن الحديث مع الغرباء ماهو إلا محاولة للتحرر من القيود الاجتماعية، وبعض الأحكام المسبقة البائسة..لأن عادة ماتكون هذه الحوارات صادقة جدا، وعفوية؛ لكن في ذات الوقت هي عميقة وغنية لإثراء تجربتنا الإنسانية ومهارتنا الحياتية.

Książka została wydana w ramach serii TED Books, którą cenię i jak dotąd nie natrafiłam w niej na wyjątkowo słabe pozycje. Ta, jak widać po ocenie, była pierwsza. W opisie okładkowym dostałam obietnicę przedstawienia jak luźne, niezobowiązujące kontakty międzyludzkie wpływają pozytywnie na samopoczucie i jakość życia. Miało to być poparte badaniami naukowymi. Niestety, to co czytała autorka to w głównej mierze opisy przelotnych interakcji jej samej lub osób przez nią spotkanych. Słowem, anegdotka goni anegdotkę, jest milusio, bo się wszyscy lubimy, dostrzegamy swoją obecność i wielkie miasta przestają być pustyniami zamieszkiwanymi przez odizolowane smutne jednostki. Badań jak na lekarstwo, za to dużo patosu i oczywistości. Zdecydowanie odradzam.

I happened across this book at work (library) during a period of intense loneliness and was hoping it might give me some lightning bolt advice to get out there and make connections. (Plus it's just the perfect physical size, very appealing to look at and hold and carry around!)


I was reading the last bit of this sitting here thinking that it was interesting, but that it didn't really give me (me personally, not necessarily readers in general) any applicable skills to go out and start having meaningful connections with strangers.

So, from that perspective, the final segment of Expedition suggestions was welcome. I'm still... me (extremely introverted, socially anxious, socially awkward, the list goes on) so I don't know if or when or how often I'll be trying them, but you never know. I do work with the public, although that makes me less likely to want to talk to strangers, because I'm stuck in the same place 40 hours a week if they want to keep talking and I don't, it makes me vulnerable, but I digress.

It's been longer than I realized since I started reading this book, and I can't quite recall what I was thinking of it or during it for the first two-thirds or so. Oh, well. I did make a few notes somewhere I'll have to go back and look at.

But, it wasn't until page 88 that I realized the main disconnect:
"All these solutions to the mechanical problems we face as we share public space, all the implicit rules, bodily expressions, and the words that do an don't come out of our mouths--all of these are things we're only dimly aware of. Learning to see what has been hidden from you carries the thrill of secret knowledge. It's also practical knowledge. It helps you understand when you feel graceful and when you feel awkward as you share spaces and moments with people you don't know."

Aha. Ahahaha. This book was written for normal people. *wink* Neurotypicals, mainly. No, if you've spent your entire life feeling like other people got a handbook you didn't, if you've tried various ways--mimicking other people, mimicking fictional characters, reading how-to books, trial and error with wildly varying success rates, that kind of thing--to parse out social rules in an effort to belong or fit in or escape ridicule... Well none of this noticing is new to you, all these 'unwritten' rules are ones you've had to put into words a long time ago (perhaps even physically writing them out for yourself), and all this advice to be quirky and break the social rules just seems dangerously out of touch. That explains why this book wasn't hitting home with me.

But I did really like the epilogue, both with the subway car full of imagined carnie retirees and the moment of swapping headphones (I always wish other people would take an interest in the music I like!).

I loved this book. I am one of those people that gets a lot from interacting regularly with strangers and I have struggled over the years to communicate effectively about why it's so important to me. This book said everything I've wanted to and did so with a very fair, balanced, and critical lens. Here are a couple of my favorite quotes from different sections of the text:

"When something unexpected happens it calls you to full attention, turns your awareness outward to the world. You are awake. When you interact with a stranger you're not in your own head, you're not on autopilot from here to there. You are present in the moment and to be present is to feel alive"

"The act of merely talking to a stranger pushes us to see them as an individual person not a body or a category. In the face of our global struggles... simply seeing someone as an individual is a political act"

"The fact that 'us and them' thinking has long roots in human history does not mean that it is natural or acceptable. It does not mean bias is inevitable, and immutable, or that fearful and defensive instincts should continue to drive us"

I found this book thru a newspaper article. I am excessively shy and highly introverted, and I was curious -- I had had several interactions with strangers on the bike path where I walk on the weekends...

Scene: Me walking home on the bike path that runs next to a creek. A guy on a bike rides towards me and notices the camera around my neck.
Guy on Bike: There's an Egret, around the curve!
My Thoughts: Highly Unlikely. I've never seen an egret at the creek.
Scene: I continue walking. Another guy approaches, and also notices my camera.
Next Guy: There's a um, White Heron? around the curve!
Me: Thanks!
And I start RUNNING around the curve, and sure enough, there's an Egret! I get my first photos of this beautiful bird, and I get more photos because the Egret hangs around for a couple weeks. :)

Despite my shyness, I am now open to the possibility of conversing with people on the bike path... and even have a new friend, J. and her little black dog Licorice!

Як часто ми вітаємося з незнайомцями чи посміхаємося замовляючи каву з собою на вулиці? Американська дослідниця Кіо Старк у своїй книжці «Коли зустрічаються незнайомці» пише про те, така наша закритість — то ніщо інше як сформований у минулому страх перед людьми, яких ми не знаємо. Звісно, довіряти варто тільки обраним, але незнайомі люди не є небезпечними за замовчуванням. Бо, переконує Кіо, «спілкування та взаємодія з новими людьми створює й розвиває терпимість, взаємоповагу та розуміння».

Якщо вам колись доводилось загубитися у чужому місті в країні, мову якої не знаєте, переляк одна з речей, яка приходить на думку першою, але… Хоча культура спілкування у різних країнах та культурах докорінно відрізняється (десь вас можуть обіймати при знайомстві, а десь просто обійдуть на дистанції), проста коротка розмова з випадковим перехожим на вулиці може не тільки розв’язати вашу проблему, а й розширити наші переконання. Вам можуть як допомогти, так і ні, але страх заговорити, в першу чергу, обмежує нас. Банальне вітання має силу подолати упередженість та розвинути емпатію, зазначає дослідниця, бо «розмови з незнайомими людьми — це живий досвід, який активізує всі ваші почуття».

Книжка за обсягом всього понад сто сторінок та створена за принципом TED – відомої відеоплатформи, де люди діляться власними ідеями. Виступ Кіо можна легко знайти онлайн та вирішити, чи хотілося б прочитати про особливості комунікації з незнайомцями цілу книжку. Як на мене, дослідження Старк дасть читачам можливість, по-перше, по-іншому поглянути на процес людського спілкування та, по-друге, допомогти подолати упередженість до незнайомих облич та підштовхнути до розвитку власних навичок соціальної комунікації. Спілкуватися з незнайомцями — це не так страшно, а приємно та корисно.

Три цитати із книжки, які навіть захотілося записати, бо вони важливі:
1) Коли людина відчуває, що її слухають, вона починає говорити й просто не в змозі зупинитись.

Expeditions (from memory, for my own use):

People Watching: Spend one hour in a public place. Turn off your devices. Write down the 'setting'. What are the most interesting features of the place? What is it for? How do people use it in ways it wasn't intended for? If you create a backstory for the people around you, define what makes you assume the things you do. Tell stories about it to friends and family.

Say Hello to Everyone: Choose a 'territory' that will take 5 to 10 minutes to walk. Not somewhere too packed. Say hello to everyone. Mix in phatic observations - "Cute dog!" "I like your hat." "Cold out today." Note how people respond.

Let's Get Lost: Bring paper and a pen. Ask someone for directions. If they do, ask them to draw you a map. If they do, give their phone number so you can call if you get lost. If they do, call them.

The Question: Ask a stranger a 'disarmingly intimate' question - "What are you afraid of?". Give people a chance to fill their own silences.

You Don't Belong Here: Choose a place you don't fit in, where you are in the minority. You should be noticeable out of place. How do people respond to your presence? You can try to engage, see how it goes. If this is not a regular experience for you, take note of how it makes you feel - how does it feel to be treated as invisible or as an outsider?

It is quite ironic that I picked up this book one year into a worldwide pandemic and everyone being sequestered in their homes. A healthy melange of personal anecdotes, optimistic prose, and anthropological experiments, this quaint book is ideal for a coffee time read. Heartwarming in its romanticisation of street intimacy, it seems to be a love letter to the metropolis and its inhabitants. The book acknowledges the dark underbelly of street-side intimacy; harassment and prejudice. All in all, a refreshing book to remind you of the joy of casual and unexpected contact, something we woefully miss during this pandemic.

This is a TED book and it definitely feels like the book equivalent of a TED talk. It takes a single key idea (in this case, talking to strangers can enrich your life) and elaborates on it for a little while, but not very long. This book explores some of the politics and dynamics of encounters with strangers and the factors that inform how people in different contexts are willing or unwilling to engage with strangers. It also offers some strategies to try talking to strangers. I would not call this a must-read.

محور الكتاب هو كيفية التعامل مع الغرباء، ولكن على طول الكتاب تطرح أسئلة أكبر عن العنصرية والإندماج وهذه المواضيع تهمنا. تحاول الكاتبة من خلال عرض أبحاث علمية وتجارب حياتية أن تقنع القارئ بأهمية أن يحاول التعرف على الغرباء من حوله، ولو في محادثات يومية موجزة لا تستغرق أكثر من دقائق. بالنسبة للكاتبة فمجرد إلقاء السلام على الغرباء، أو محادثتهم بإيجاز في المصعد أو خلال الحياة اليومية، بالطريق إلى العمل أو لدى الذهاب للتسوق، يمكن أن يحدث تغيرات إيجابية على المستوى الشخصي لكل شخص وتغيرات مجتمعية وسياسية مهمة
تظهر بوضوح من خلال الكتاب مشكلة العنصرية في البنى الحكومية والاقتصادية والمؤسسات في أمريكا، والمجتمع الأمريكي بصورة عامة. ألاحظ كثيرا نوعا من الشعور لدى السوريين بأن العنصرية التي يتعرضون لها في تركيا مثلا لا تفوقها أي عنصرية أو أنها مستحيلة الحل، أعتقد أن كتابا كهذا يثبت أولا أن العنصرية والخوف من الغرباء أشمل بكثير ومنتشرة بكل العالم، ورغم كونها مشكلة متأصلة تعود لطبيعة التركيب النفسي للإنسان إلا أنها قابلة للحل، وثانيا أن مشكلة العنصرية التي يعانيها السوريون في تركيا مثلا هي أبسط من العنصرية التي تعانيها فئات اجتماعية أخرى في أماكن أخرى من العالم وحلولها قد تكون أسهل بكثير
من الأبحاث التي ذكرت في الكتاب الأبحاث القديمة التي كانت قد وصلت لنتيجة أن معظم الناس يميلون لتعميم الحكم لدى خوضهم تجربة إيجابية واحدة مع فرد من أي مجتمع أو أقلية لدى الاحتكاك به على كل هذه الفئة من المجتمع أو الاقلية، بينما لا يحدث نفس التأثير لدى التجارب السلبية في حال كان لدى هذا الشخص مقدما عداء تجاه الأجانب. لكن على أرض الواقع كان يتبين أن المناطق التي فيها احتكاك مباشر بين أحياء السود والبيض كانت فيها المزيد من العنصرية، وهو ما عجزت الأبحاث القديمة عن تفسيره كون الغالبية من الناس تتصرف بشكل إيجابي تجاه الفئات الأخرى من المجتمع فنتائج الأبحاث لم تكن تنعكس على المجتمع. وفعلا، تبين بالأبحاث الأحدث أن العكس هو الصحيح، أن الناس يميلون عموما لتعميم التجارب السلبية التي يخوضونها أكثر بكثير من التجارب الإيجابية على كل أفراد فئات المجتمع أو الأقليات التي احتكوا بها، وهذا برأيي يطرح تحديا كبيرا يفرض تغيرات كبيرة بالتعاطي الإعلامي مثلا مع قضية العنصرية تجاه السوريين، بحيث يجب لدى انتشار القصص السلبية أن يتم مناقشتها وتفنيدها الواحدة تلو الأخرى ومحاولة تفسيرها ووضعها بسياق ونقاشها أمام الرأي العام، مع تقديم عدد أكبر بكثير من التجارب الإيجابية للتغلب على الأحكام العنصرية العامة التي تطلق ضد السوريين أو ضد فئات كاملة أخرى من المجتمع

It's evident that over the years there's been a decline in social engagement and connection and an increase in loneliness and mental health impacts. While this book doesn't address the root causes of this issue, the takeaway here is that talking to strangers is important and we should make every effort to do so because it makes us feel seen, interrupts the mundanity of our lives, allows us to be present, and makes us feel as if we belong. As Stark writes, interacting with strangers can "change emotions, ideas, and politics and the tangled places where they overlap". However, it's not all peachy, as one negative experience can outweigh many positives ones, so interact at your own peril. Readers might appreciate that Stark provides practical ways on interacting with strangers, and while her thesis isn't groundbreaking, I think that we could all use this reminder.

I watched Kio Stark's TED Talk on this topic and that inspired me to read the book. I got a big kick out of it but that's mostly because I could have written it. As an adult, I have always enjoyed engaging strangers in conversation, even just small snippets. I like the way I feel when I make that connection and I think, generally speaking, the other likes it as well. Ms Stark's book makes a case for how these brief interactions push us to see the stranger as an individual with all the human experiences that we carry. Call me crazy but I think it's these small interactions are crucial for the well being of our species. They remind us that we are in this thing called life together and we can lift each other up, if only in passing.
There wasn't a lot new for me in this fast read but there was a lot that made me smile. Some of it actually made me feel hopeful. Try it. See what you think.

I find myself gravitating to short books at the moment, my waking hours consumed with apartment renovations and trip planning. This one fit the bill nicely and was about a challenging topic for this misanthropic introvert! As I read, I started to notice and appreciate more my interactions with strangers, and the highlight of my week was actually having a 3-minute conversation about my day and travel plans with a flower seller who opened our interaction with a simple question to that effect. That's the curious thing about these interactions; I'm very unlikely and unwilling to break the ice myself but if the other person does it, I open up immediately. As Kio Stark would say, that's where the magic happens.

I love talking to and meeting strangers and this book is a pleasure to read. Although it is not directly about urbanism, there are so many aspects of human relationships that should be taken into account in urban design. How can we promote these encounters, this exchange?

"(...) a moment of communion like that isn't common, but you can find little ones when you offer a smile in passing by someone you don't know. For me this special way of feeling connected to people I share a world with is essential to my existence without it, even when I am immersed in the love of my family and friends I feel a pinch of loneliness and disconnection. Ось чому вчить ця книга — мені це видається чітким головним мотивом, який проходить через усі розділи і поради, усі описані ситуації, закономірності і винятки.

«‎Коли зустрічаються незнайомці в будь-якій культурі, в будь-якому місці, в будь-якій соціальній групі, мимоволі виникають одні й ті самі питання: яка поведінка тут доречна? Як уникати взаємодії; як увійти в неї, поводитися в ній і вийти з неї? Як давати раду з нашими фізичними та соціальними дистанціями? Як вибирати, з ким спілкуватися?» — ці питання ставить Кіо Старк у своїй книзі і допомагає читачу знайти на них відповіді під час читання. Книга не дає прямих відповідей, вона дає знання, які можна адаптувати до свого соціального контексту, виробити поведінкові моделі, актуальні для свого суспільства, комфортні та дієві у своїй реальності.

Одна з ключових речей, яким може навчити ця книга — завжди пам'ятати про соціальний контекст. Те, що в одній країні буде вважатися ввічливим, у іншій напружить людину. Те, що в одній спільноті — комплімент, вияв захоплення, в іншій — образа. І контекст потрібно врахововувати не лише глобально, а й локально, у кожній конкретній взаємодії. Важливо розуміти, чи ваша взаємодія з ось цим конкретним незнайомцем не буде сприйнята як образа/не налякає людину/не відволіче від важливої справи. Треба грамотно вибирати спосіб взаємодії: погляд, посмішка, привітання чи коротка репліка. Розуміти, як балансувати і своїми сигналами показувати людині «‎я тебе справді бачу, визнаю у соціумі, але ні до чого не закликаю і тобі не загрожую».

Це нюанси — але міжлюдські стосунки побудовані з нюансів, і, аби досягти успіху у спілкуванні з людьми, потрібно вчитися їх враховувати. Книга «‎Коли зустрічаються незнайомці» — непоганий путівник.

Книга цінна тим, що спершу ти дивуєшся, як же важко віднайти баланс у спілкуванні з незнайомцями: критично оцінювати, з ким можна завести розмову, а хто становить потенційну загрозу, але при цьому не боятися абсолютно будь-якої взаємодії. Але під час читання ти дізнаєшся нову інформацію, навчаєшся краще розуміти людей, вивчаєш механізми взаємодії, які допоможуть у реальному житті. Ця книга не може зробити тебе гуру комунікації за 100 сторінок, але вона однозначно ладна надихнути на спілкування, відмічання деталей, глибше вивчення навколишнього світу. Особисто я після вивчення книги поновила свою участь у двох проектах, суть яких у спілкування з незнайомими потенційно цікавими вам людьми, і занотувала ще декілька, про які хочу дізнатися більше.

Особливо вагома мотивація до дії — розділ з «‎експериментами» в кінці книги. Коли вся теорія пройдена, Старк пропонує перейти до практики і надає відразу кілька вправ різного рівня складності, які будуть для цього дуже доречними.

Наприкінці рецензії хочу ще раз повернутися до думки, висловленої ще на початку — ця книга вчить нас бути космополітами, і показує важливість цього. Вона показує, як важливо бути толерантним, відкритим та цікавим і вірити, що ми всі в цьому світі об'єднані, щоб виявляти співпереживання. Ми повинні вміти ставати на місце іншої людини, розуміти її погляди та відчуття.

Мені дуже подобається, як автор у книзі постійно звертається до світового контексту, майстерно вплітаючи його в свою розповідь — таким чином це не казка, відірвана від реальності, а практичний посібник. Посібник, у якому висвітлені політичні, расові, гендерні питання в контексті міжособистісних стосунків між незнайомцями — і все це об'єднано чіткою загальною ідеєю.

Раджу прочитати цю книгу усім, як нагадування про те, як важливо бути людяним космополітом у сучасному світі, а ще надихнутися більше йому довіряти і дивитися широко розплющеними очима та слухати нашорошеними вухами ;)

Brilliant.

Three things I learned from Kio Stark's book:

1) You can, oddly, reach a deeper level of intimate talk with a stranger than with the person you live with. Because you won't see them again. We bottle up things with the people we live with to avoid ... lots of things. Try being as intimate and honest in what we disclose with our partners: that's a real test of connection and intimacy.

2) One bad experience with a member of a community or group that we don't know or are prejudiced against confirms and deepens that prejudice or sense of the other group as 'strangers' in the old fashioned sense - foreign and unknowable and different and somehow less than the group we feel connected with, or part of. We need to experience a number of similar unprompted one-off but positive interactions to cancel out the one we experience negatively.

3) In Austria and West Switzerland everyone in a cafe stops what they are saying or doing, looks up in welcome and says "Hello" (in German, presumably) when any one person comes in and again stops their own conversations to say "Goodbye" in chorus when one person leaves. They don't talk to that person in between times. But, what a great welcoming way to behave to strangers :) (Not that Austria, with its strong extreme right wing, is otherwise that welcoming to those its mainstream population perceive as 'strangers' now, or in the past ...)

First book I've read based on a TED talk and it really reads like one - short and with some good insights. Unfortunately it doesn't deliver anywhere near what its title promises.
Some thought provoking psychological theory and also a few coaching tips for introverts and those that hide themselves behind digital devices. But the benefits of breaking the "civil inattention" cycle just aren't spelled out, instead are totally vague and subjective. The "transformational" experiences were actually petty and lacked any substance at all. Many of my own have been life changing and initiated lifelong friendships. Yes, we sometimes do reveal our inner selves to strangers. But the type of interactions encouraged by this book don't even qualify as small talk. Unless you're insanely lonely and boring, they are most likely completely forgotten by both parties.
What it does do is paint a sad picture of a world in which we are all victims of our instinctive categorisation and that we need to constantly remind ourselves that we are just a collection of self-involved, over-privileged, bigots. This as much fuels the needless paranoia as it does to break the ice. What a sad world we live in where we have to read TED books so as not to instinctively ignore our fellow human beings!

I feel like this author is way too interested in a topic that's so self-evident, simple to learn about, and not inherently that useful to go deep into. Maybe if you don't have social skills and are routinely isolated from society then it can help you understand the importance of fucking talking to people and gaining them? It's just a compilation of a lot of overly-extensive, in-depth, unnecessary observations and conclusions about a topic that's already obvious. I don't see why she spent so much time making this or how she finds it so fascinating or whatever. I didn't really get hardly anything from it after listening to the audiobook for like 35 minutes and so I quit.
Yeah, I get it. Talking to strangers is important, can create a lot of meaningful interactions, and is a crucial aspect of having a decent social life or being happier or whatever. But isn't that just something you learn after like living for multiple years of your life?
Feeling like shit because I haven't talked to enough people recently is enough at least for me to get my ass in the world and start associating with more people. I guess that somehow needs to be drilled into people's heads that don't realize this and that somehow need motivation or something to get out?

When I was growing up, I realized my Mom’s hobby was to go to the Hardees at the mall, buy a cup of coffee during non-lunch hours, and sit in a booth with a good view of the mall in front of Montgomery Wards, and to watch people. She rarely talked with strangers, though, and I grew up with that as a base. Going away to college I found myself talking to strangers quite often, and I have kept this up ever since. I was happy to see the suggested exercises in this book really starts with my Mom’s people watching, and continues with some things that I have done, and some things I’ve never even thought of doing (like pretending I am lost and asking someone to draw a map). I found these suggestions quite interesting. I liked the anecdotes presented here, and I appreciated the brevity of the book and of the message. I think being open to interactions is important and valuable in many ways. Worth some thought.

Kio Stark’s When Strangers Meet starts off wonderfully in examining how the notion of strangers is not so strange after all. Halfway through the book it reads increasingly like a TED Talk (it is a TED publication), but all in all, the book gives an apt reminder of why we need to open our hearts and minds to the world around us. What I really liked is that Stark paints a highly realistic picture; there were anecdotes of how she kept strangers at arm’s length when it came to her daughter and how that’s still a paradox in trying to instill values of openness, of how when you’re a woman in a dark alley or a minority in a majority community, how you behave around strangers becomes an entirely different story. The book also includes beautiful illustrations and caps off with ‘expeditions’ to help guide you into a world full of strangers you may or may not be ready to connect with. This is a fun one.
