Shadows & Lies

Rate this book
Shadows and Lies is the third volume of the adventures of Claire Stone, a Year 11 student who finds her way into a realm parallel to ours, but based on stolen technology powered by industrialised magic; Underland. She is offered a job fighting demons that travel through Underland to reach our world, and gets drawn deeper into investigating skulduggery, plans to get more of the monsters through into our world, to take over more people.
Claire also finds that unlike almost everybody in Underland, she can tap into the magic and work spells, and can make use of a power source that nobody else can touch.
Her parents have already taken hostage, and despite her saving Underland from invasion, nobody seems willing or able to help her get her parents back. Claire takes more into her own hands, doing things she would neer have previously considered, becoming colder and less emotional, until she is doing things to people she would never have considered. Old friends betray her, new allies are difficult to trust.
In the end Claire finds her way through to the Demon realm, ready to destroy them, only to find there are more lies to uncover.

The Warrior Stone series is a blend of coming-of-age Young Adult, with Steampunk and Urban Fantasy themes. An adventure, suitable for 12 years and over (or younger, for more mature readers). It contains no sexual themes.

Having read the first two books in the series, I was looking forward to the final story, and it didn’t disappoint. Shadows and Lies goes deeper into the steampunk world of Underland and the power struggles within in, and explores how Claire Stone’s White Magic works. It becomes increasingly difficult for her to know who to trust, and Claire’s determination to do anything to rescue her parents is tested to its limit as she discovers Underland’s darkest secrets. An intriguing read.
