The feel of this large format book - about the French photographer Atget - matched the content perfectly. It is quite a monument. Abbott's brief introduction, in over-sized print, transports one to 1927, when she briefly met Atget before he passed. I borrowed via interlibrary loans and feel jealous of those who have their own copy on the shelf. EDIT: The edition I read was the 1964 Horizon one.
The first time I saw photographs by Eugene Atget was in 1925 in the studio of Man Ray in Paris. Their impact was immediate and tremendous. There was a sudden flash of recognition - the shock of realism unadorned.
