I couldn’t care less as I’m not a fan of either Venom or Eddie Brock but it should be noted that the cover of this book is misleading. Eddie, the most infamous host of the Symbiote, is reunited with Venom, they’re saying “We’re Back!” and the subtitle is “Homecoming”, so Eddie Brock/Venom fans (there must be some) should reasonably expect this to be about the pair - Venom being just one example of Marvel probably deciding to go back to the classic incarnation of the character after seeing how returning to the status quo in Rebirth made DC a pile of cash.

Except it’s not really about Eddie and Venom - they’re actually only together for a handful of pages at the end. Most of this one is about some nobody piece of trash called Lee Price who stumbles across the Symbiote and gets embroiled in some convoluted and tedious blackmail scheme with Black Cat, Scorpion and the Feds.

It doesn’t help either that the comic is drawn by one of the worst artists working today, Gerardo Sandoval, whose busy ‘90s pencils make everything look flat, jagged and ugly. He’s done worse elsewhere (his work on the Secret Wars tie-in, Age of Apocalypse, is heinous) but it’s still really bad here.

I suppose it’s interesting that after all the years of nonsense this character’s gone through as Agent Venom, a Guardian of the Galaxy and his latest role as “Space Knight”, the Symbiote is now more inclined towards “good” hosts and wants to be heroic rather than villainous - Venom actually has some character development for a change! - but it’s small beer in a book that’s mostly dreary reading.

Venom’s just another decent supporting player/antagonist who can’t carry a solo title. Maybe there’s a good Venom comic out there (probably not) but this ain’t it.

I’d go with Thug Tartar over day-old hot dogs or the grey-ish sausage rolls as well.

Could this be a merry Marvel character re-boot to coincide with an over-cooked movie release?

Probably.

Flash Thompson is no longer in control of the Venom symbiote and poor lil’ Venom, who’s seen better days, is in need of a host.

So he finds ex-Army Ranger and down-on-his-luck dude, Lee Price, who’s in the middle of a weapons buy. Carnage, if you’ll forgive the term, ensues.

Venom has a long history in the Marvel universe (the hosts pictured below are the top five)…

…but this one is a different version of the very same character. He’s more of a whiny emo-symbiote, who’s easily cowed by his brand new host.

Or maybe it just wants to do the right thing after a tour with Flash Thompson.

Who knows?

This volume basically amounts to a way-too-long prelude to have Venom square off with Spider-Man and re-unite with . Just like the feature film.

Blarggh!

Black Cat, who’s still doing the bad kitty thing, is also in this.

Kudos to the creators for not making this a cleavage-a-thon as others have done in the past.

Bottom Line: With Venom, a little menace goes a long way…

…but, it’s become like spinning a wheel with near infinite characterizations.

Wither the slaughter-minded monster?

*sob*

I couldn't be less excited about Eddie Brock getting the symbiote back. But Eddie Brock doesn't even show up until the end of the book when he's working for the FBI (Because you know, they hire serial killers.) Some new psychopath, Lee Price, bonds with the symbiote and exerts influence on it to make it kill people. The story is overly complicated and nonsensical. Gerardo Sandoval's jagged, dark art looks terrible, like something Image would have produced in the 90's.

Bring back Flash Thompson! His character was at least interesting.

This was a fun read!

Lee Price is the new host for the symbiote and well we see how he bonds with it and then we see him working for Black cat and going on missions and acting like a villain taking down villains and in the midst of it the venom symbiote resisting its new host and then a job where he has to work with Scorpion who seems to have found his secret and the argument between host and the parasite and then well each trying to assert dominance over the other and its awesome and finally the big confrontation with Spider-man and also an epic ending with a familiar face returning and the fate of the new host revealed!

Its not the greatest volume but I kinda enjoyed it and it reads pretty well on its own and its fast paced. Lee's moral quandry is clear, he will take down anyone if he wants to and the venom symbiote resisting it makes for some great banter between them and yeah again I loved the whole thing and the art was so good and it provides such a fascinating reading experience!

I give some credit to Mike here. He tried to introduce a new character to take Venom over. However, he failed to give us a character we can like.

Venom isn't a easy character to nail. When he's the main character it's even harder. So far only Rick's run on Agent Venom really worked for me. So this story is about Lee, who gets to try on the venom suit. Instead of a internal struggle with who takes over who it's a physical one half the time with Lee able to hold off Venom with ease. It's pretty stupid as Spider-man, a extremely super powered superhero had trouble doing this. Even more so it just becomes a flat story about betrayal and who's going to cross who.

Good: The idea of it is cool. I also liked that since Venom had been a hero so long he doesn't want to do bad anymore.

Bad: The dialog ranges from okay to bad. The fight scenes are extremely underwhelming. Lee is a boring one dimensional character. The storyline itself is poor and cliche as could be good.

Overall venom isn't worth much of your time. It's not the worst book I read but it's pretty uninspiring. I can't give it over a 2.

Without a doubt the best Venom comic I've read so far. The symbiote is actually given characterization in this comic, and is really more of the main character than the new host is. I enjoyed the power conflict of the new host (Lee Price) and the symbiote, and I appreciated the art as well. The ending however was disappointing, as Eddie Brock is coming back ( I would have preferred the new character to remain as Venom, but who knows). Either way, it's a big improvement over earlier Venom titles.

This was such a forgettable and mundane attempt to refresh Venom's character with a new host. The best part of it all is the end and even then, you'll struggle in your desire to continue on.

Fresh start for the symbiote and it actually wasn't that bad.. It was surprisingly interesting...Though, not interested enough to keep me invested in the long run... Flash Thomson was, is and always will be my favourite Venom and a reason, i hope, for me to get back to this or a future Venom book if he decides to come back.

[Read as single issues]
After a good few years of highly successful stories featuring Flash Thompson as Agent Venom, first on Earth and then as a member of the Guardians Of The Galaxy and his own series as a Space Knight, the Powers That Be have decided that Venom will now be back on Earth and rebond with Eddie Brock. But first, we get a six issue story featuring one of the least likeable characters I've ever met, Lee Price.

Lee is a damaged man; after spending time as an Army Ranger and suffering injuries that make 'normal' jobs difficult now that he has returned from service, he finds himself both part of the Black Cat's criminal underworld and the newest host of the Venom symbiote. In an interesting twist, Lee is the one exerting his influence over the symbiote, much to the symbiote's chagrin. The transition from Space Knight to this series is shaky (even with a bridging story in the recently released Venom #150), but at least the symbiote's new state of mind as a hero remains intact, even if Lee does his darnedest to break it.

The story is up and down for the most part, and the eventual reunion of Eddie Brock and Venom is a means to an end, but it's not particularly bad. The artwork is the real saving grace, as Gerardo Sandoval continues on from Space Knight as the ongoing artist here, his dark, sketchy, anime-like proportions a perfect fit for Venom's world.

Not the best, but a decent story that moves the Venom symbiote away from one familiar status quo to another. I do wonder if writer Mike Costa had more plans for Lee Price, but for now, I guess we'll never know.

It's not an excellent book story-wise. Lee fails to impress as a host (frankly speaking, he's dull) and there's nothing new about the "I don't want to kill but I'm killing" moral dilemma. Same old, basically.

But it still gets three stars from me for three things I did like about it:
1) tiny Venom is so a-d-o-r-a-b-l-e. Perhaps it might not be the word you usually use to describe our favourite symbiote and yet there he is: super adorable. Especially when he's sitting on the bench next to Lee. I love that panel. So cute!;
2) Peter Parker wasting time on social media, talking nonsense abut frenemies. Absurd and fun;
3) the art! The character design is very basic but the colouring looks fabulous, especially on pages with fire/flames and there are quite a few in the book. Full-page pictures of Venom are also a real treat (do not be misled by the cover - it's the only one that's meh)... if you like that shiny black skin and sharp teeth as much as I do.

So, to sum it up, it's not great but I had an insanely stressful and tired day - what I was looking for was a bit of entertainment, not a complex, memorable plot and depth. Or, if I may be honest, I was in a mood for Venom and he was... so adorable. Sometimes it's all you need.

The story featuring a new host for Venom is fun enough, but turns out to be just a detour before the symbiote returns to the host that twisted it into the killing machine we all know and love. Still, it's a welcome addition to see more facets to the symbiote than solely its bloodthirst. The host is more important than it seems to the way Venom behaves in the end. The symbiote is a character in its own right which changes along with its host. It had a trist as a good guy in the past, but now it seems to be heading toward something else.

Lee Price is an ex-soldier down on his luck. He can't find a steady job, so he turns to shady business. He hooks Lee up with Mac Gargan and Black Cat to attend an exchange. The weakened Venom symbiote has developed a conscience from its previous host who chose the hero path. It stumbles onto the exchange and bonds with Lee. His army training helps him gain control of the symbiote, allowing him to use its abilities for his own calculated gain. This doesn't sit well with the symbiote, but for once it's powerless to stop it, though other parties will challenge Lee's newfound power.

Don't let the cover fool you. Eddie Brock only returns as Venom in the last pages of this Venom comeback. What does unfold is a dark and chaotic story about the mind of our favorite symbiote...

Venom, apparently recently removed from Flash Thompson (how that happened isn't explored) is trying to survive. Hiding on the streets, he is looking for a new hero to bond himself to. After temporarily bonding himself with a homeless man, he protects and bonds with Lee Price, a criminal who just lined up a job with Mac Gargan (currently Scorpion, but a previous Venom host). Venom immediately regrets it, sensing the "bad" in Lee, but is overpowered and controlled by his host.
The rest of the Volume is split between Lee's criminal activities, encounters with Black Cat and Scorpion, and culminates with a fight against Spider-Man. Lured by the potential to be re-bonded with Spidey, Venom leaves Lee behind, but is captured by the Bureau, re-igniting his hatred for Spider-Man. The convoy delivering Venom is taken by Eddie Brock, reuniting them both, with the declaration of "We're Back!" as he swings away.

The return of Venom/Brock has been coming for a while, and with the whole "Venom-verse" event coming soon, I really look forward to seeing how the character develops in the modern iteration of the Marvel Universe.

Recommend, but with slight reservation.... Don't pre-judge a book by its cover!

I thought it was ok. I really like eddy and venoms relationship but the plotlines felt slightly confusing and I felt like it could have been developed more. The antagonist Lee I thought was quite boring and not very fleshed out but I liked the dinosaurs, they were kind of fun. I think I just don't vibe well with the style of Marvel comics and the general storylines and action in it which all felt rushed. I also got confused with all the orders of the issue and the crossovers but I think I read most of it. The art was cool though and I might try some other Venom comics to see if I like them because I do like Venom as a character, also looking forward to the new Venom movie!

Buzzword Readathon #4

So I understand why certain choices in this comic were made but that doesn't mean I need to like them. On the whole I found the experience of reading this pretty insufferable, and I know that may sound like an overreaction but once you read this you'll know what I mean.

The Venom in this comic is a post-Peter Parker, post-Flash Thompson Venom who is much more into being the hero nowadays. Unfortunately, Lee Price is the next person to find the symbiote and he is very much into the whole villain thing. Now, as I said, I understand the choices made here; I understand that Lee is meant to be unlikable. But the problem is that he isn't even a fun kind of unlikable. He's the kind of unlikable where you want his mere existence wiped from your brain.

My other big issue ties in with my hatred of Lee; this comic is stuffed to the brim with dark, angry men, and it got extremely tiring after a couple volumes. The story and art unfortunately aren't anything to write home about, either.

Then, suddenly, at the end of issue 5 there's a beacon of hope in the form of one Mr. Eddie Brock. And, spoilers I guess, by the end of the volume we've gotten rid of Lee and Eddie's back with his darling. Honestly, if you're interested in Mike Costa's Venom run I would recommend just skipping to volume 2 because this really functions more as a prologue so we know how Eddie and the Symbiote came together.

I read this as a fan of the Venom movie so I don't have any hang-ups about previous hosts or previous character developments in comics as other reviewers, but I do agree that the cover is misleading (). For me, it was a fun read, the conflict between Lee and Venom was interesting and I liked Venom's characterization. Lee started off interesting and smart, but it all kinda fell apart in the end. I know Spiderman is a good guy, but I thought he was a bit of a jerk here, probably because I was rooting for Venom.

my first venom comic... i admit, i had no idea what to expect here. it was fine, i like the venom symbiote. eddie was, uh, Not the movie character. at all. i guess flash's series is what i'm looking for.
on the other hand the art was mostly really nice. it was a bit more traditional dude-comic-ish without being so ugly it was a total turn off. (Eddie's arms tho? what??)

Kind of a fake out as he doesn't reunite with Eddie Brock until the end. The Lee whatever era is like one of those 19th Century presidents no one remembers like Franklin Pierce or Millard Fillmore.

Venom was probably my favorite comic book character growing up. I really dig the mix of body horror weirdness, outer space sci-fi monster, and the conflicted hero/villain with a mouth full of fangs. It's been a long, long time since I read any Venom comics but after the recent movie trailer I figured I'd pick up an unread TPB and see what the symbiote's been up to. Apparently Venom's been busy; went full hero, joined up with Flash Thompson, and became a Guardian of the Galaxy? Huh, I guess it really has been a long time since I last read Venom comics because wow, that's new to me.

In this comic, the symbiote comes back down to earth after saving the galaxy and latches itself onto a new character(?) by the name of Lee. This guy Lee is an ass. He looks like an anime dropout and has about an interesting story as a rock in the mud. What's interesting, at least occasionally, is how Venom is now a stabilizing influence and tries to set Lee on the straight and narrow. But Lee ain't having that and uses the symbiote for evil, much to the alien goo's dismay.

Lee is just about the most forgettable Marvel antihero/villain I've read in a long time. The symbiote is kind of fun to watch as it plays this horrifically ugly angel on Lee's shoulder, but the story doesn't make good enough use of the concept. As far as a reintroduction to Venom after many years, this was a big letdown.

Collects Venom (2016) issues #1-6

I loved this story, and was really drawn in to the story being told about this new character Lee Price. Even though Eddie Brock is on the cover of this collection dressed as Venom, Brock doesn't have a presence in this volume until the final issue (plus a small section of the penultimate issue). The real star of this volume is Lee Price, the new host for the Venom symbiote, and I found the story about him really compelling.

SPOILERS:

I wish that Lee would have had more time to be in the Venom role. I don't know what was happening behind the scenes, but I got the distinct feeling that writer Mike Costa had a long-term plan for a story involving Lee Price, but then Marvel mandated the return of Eddie Brock. I could be totally wrong about this, but otherwise, why would they invest so much time in building up this new character if he was going to be a non-issue by Issue #7. I really hope this isn't the last we've seen of Lee Price.
