"When times are dark, you cling onto whatever light you can, no matter how twisted"
From Jonathan Kent, author of 'The Shael Chronicles' and the best selling Amazon short story 'The Waiting Room', comes 'Delivery Man', a dark and twisted psychological thriller.
In the space of four months, Robert Townsend lost his wife, his kids, his job and his house. When a bleary clarity finally returned, he knew he had to try and put the remains of his life back together. Taking up a position as a 'Delivery Assistant' in a local supermarket should have been just the tonic he needed to start the road to recovery, but what he hadn't accounted for was the sadistic boss he found himself working for. As the personal conflict escalates beyond his control, he is left with two very clear options: quit or stand up for himself.
God knows why he chose the latter.
'Delivery Man' shows exactly how far a man can go when pushed to the limit.
Jonathan Kent is an author of Dark Fantasy and Horror fiction. His tales are predominantly told from a modern perspective where everyday folk are thrown into strange and fantastical situations. The stories can be dark, involving real life characters and are definitely not for the faint hearted!
He lives with his wife, two daughters and a houseful of pets on the wind swept Isle of Portland, in Dorset. He has a Business Degree from Manchester Metropolitan University and until recently had a successful career as a management consultant.
In September 2016 he gave it all up yo pursue his passion for storytelling and began a fledgling career as a novelist. His first Dark Fantasy novel 'Homecoming' was published in November 2016, followed by its darker (aren't they always!) sequel 'Meadowbank' - published in April 2017.
Delivery Man is a bit of a departure for me and I'm conscious this story may divide the crowd. However, I thought I would give some sort of insight as to where this story has come from.
My head is still in the fantastical world of 'Shael' as I begin work on the third novel in the series, but this one has been chipping away in my ear for a few months. It's not autobiographical in any way, but there is probably more of 'me' in this story than any of my others. I think all of us live in fear of our lives imploding and losing it all - this story kind of blossomed from there. The path to rebuild a shattered life can be a huge uphill struggle and woe-betide anyone who stands in the way of a man putting the pieces back together!
I do hope you enjoy reading this tale. It's probably a little longer than I originally intended as once I got into the mindset of 'Robert' I didn't want to let go. I was eager to see exactly how far 'he' would go and believe me, even I was surprised.
Yeah! I know this takes things to the absolute extreme, but I see people like this all the time.
Delivery Man tells the story of a man that hits rock bottom and starts to build his life back up by taking a job working in a supermarket as a 'Delivery Man'. Geddit? Anyway, the bloke he starts to work for knew him at school and for reasons that aren't fully explained, makes his life a misery.
The ending is signposted probably from about the midpoint, but it's very interesting to see how we get there. At 90 odd pages I would put this more in the Novella territory rather than a short story, but it's a cracking read and you are really taken along with the main character.
Oh, and the last couple of paragraphs are hilarious!!

This short story takes mid life crisis to a whole new level. Lots of relatable experiences coupled with a dark side make it a very enjoyable short story.
A nicely written story. I certainly didn't see where the plot was heading which is always preferable and the characters were well defined and believable. It's pretty long for a short story but had a great pace to it. Overall. A good read.
I really enjoyed this novella. The voice and style were so fun and really helped build our main character, a guy you can't help but side with. The ending was devilishly delicious as well. Very well written and a thrilling ride.
As with all short stories - it felt a bit rushed. I used to only read Matt Shaw's books until Mr. Kent came up on my Goodreads radar which is when I decided to give this book a shot. His writing style is certainly something to get used to and certain parts of the story could have been a little more developed, but the story was overall pretty good. I will definitely be reading more from this author.
