Make It To Midnight: Learning to Live When You Want to Die

Rate this book
Over 2000 years ago Paul the Apostle wrote in Romans 7:15 “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do." Over 100 years ago Sigmund Freud came up with the idea of the Id, Ego and Superego. Both men, and pretty much every human being since, has endured this struggle…myself included. For me I spent 5 years being profoundly suicidal. I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder II, Major Depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Malaise, ADHD and Suicidal Ideation. Over the course of several years I was put on over twenty medications and at least as many supplements to try to “fix” my issues.

Today I am medication free, supplement free and symptom free.

What I discovered is that Freud and Paul were right, we have two sides to our psyche that are often in conflict. However unlike Paul and Freud, I had the advantage of knowing the anatomy and function of the different parts of the brain thanks to the advances of modern science. I learned through my research that we not only have two components to our psyche, we actually have two brains…a mammal brain and a human brain. So I decided rather than conflict with my emotional brain, I'd have a conversation with it. I decided to speak to my emotional side as if it were an equal, and it worked. Once we became friends, we became allies with a common purpose. We would take every day one at a time. If we could just "Make it to Midnight" tomorrow would be better. It worked. Days became weeks, weeks became months and months have now become years.

We are told by psychologists that we have a conscious and a subconscious. I disagree. I believe we have an emotional conscious and a logical conscious. They are not hierarchical, they are roommates. They are coequal tenants in a long term lease. When I realized fighting against my emotions was not the answer, we actually became pretty good friends. Over time my anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts all subsided because I was no longer fighting with myself. I've never been happier. I want that for you too.
