I am conflicted about this book. Initially, I had the impression that Aja a was strong, independent. I can even understand her being sexually submissive. But the Sheriff being able to pull her strings so easily didn't jive with my early thoughts about Aja.

Steel and Aja seemed to start out friendly, getting to know each other, and then jumped immediately into a sexual relationship. I have to be honest, I was mildly offended by him referring to Aja as his "chocolate toy".

I guess I wasn't sure where this book was going. Was it a romance, erotica, mystery, suspense, a social commentary on racism, or a combination of all with a little action and suspense thrown in to top it off?

This is the first time I have read anything by this author. I will try another of her book just to see if I can get a handle on her style. This book wasn't bad, it just felt off to me. Not a great description, but if I get more clarity about what I'm thinking, I will update the review.

Painful Truths

This was a deep story with some painful truths. It's sad to know that even now little towns like Boyd are still in existence. So much injustice was done to The Robinson family that it makes you sad considering the injustices still happening to African Americans now. I liked how quiet and strong Steel was and how he became the father Travis and Drew needed. I loved how fierce and protective Aja was when it came to her family and Steel. Steel and Aja made a perfect couple even with the age difference because they had both been through a lot in life and didn't have anyone to confide in. Their friendship/relationship was instantaneous and I loved watching it grow into love and marriage. I was happy that the family was finally able to leave Boyd and live a happy life. The men in Boyd were horrible and did horrible things to the people of color there and sadly that type of behavior still exist today in 2020.

A small town romance with so many secrets

I’m in awe and really enjoyed the story. The Robinsons are a black family living in an all white town that have been isolated and dealing with so much trauma. There’s inheritance money they were owed from the Tuckers, a prominent family that rules their small town. Steel Gray is a Tucker from his mother’s side and moves into the Tucker estate to take care of it for his cousin Carlson Tucker.

Steel meets Drew Robinson snooping around and learns about the family. Aja is the eldest sister and main caretaker for the family while her grandfather is going senile. The sheriff of the town has a weird fixation on the Robinson and harasses all of the siblings, especially Aja.

The chemistry between Aja and Steel was exciting. The storytelling was very consistent and compelling. The secrets are juicy and realistic. The spice is amazing. One of my favorite books in a while.

A steamy, emotional, drama filled ride!!

Steel and Aja ... What can I say? They were made for each other. They balanced each other in so many ways. This book is hella sexy, emotional, and quite relevant to what's still happening today when it comes to race. Family has no color. Family doesn't mean blood. And there is always help out there in some form. We just have to put our pride aside and accept it. I'm glad Aja learned this, even though it took her a while to get there. Steel...He's a man's man and sexy as hell and a freak in the bed. Whoo-wee!! Great book. Great storyline. Great writing.

Good read

This was really good. I have read other books by the author and craved more meat & potatoes. This book delivers, I don't normal like characters with bad back stories, because there is a enough of that in the world. But I enjoyed this story. I appreciate that the story was not long and drawn out with to many side stories. Sometimes as a woman of color it is hard to read stories where people of color are harmed or missed treated because it is a soft spot
. That every time you see a new event in the news reopens that wound. But I happy for a happy ending. I hope others enjoy this book.

Wow!

This was an unexpected treasure. There is a lot of conflict and ugliness inside. There is also love, passion and wrongs made right. Aja has been through so much. Most people would crumble, she stood strong. Texas man was just who she needed to open her heart. There is a whole family dynamic to love and some serious rage aimed at those who hurt her. Highly recommend. There is some really graphic and tough to take things in this story. Sweet and lovey this is not.
Well done Ms. Jasper. I look forward to reading another story from this author.

What a hot read! Great character development, good backstory and best of all, hot love scenes. Set in a small town, add some mystery and a sexy dominant male lead and you have yourself a decent romance story. I really really enjoyed the relationship between Steel and Aja. They are drawn to each other in the most carnal of ways and Jamila does a great job of describing exactly how that happens. These two had my Kindle sizzling lol Enjoy!

Powerful story!

Small town secrets come to light! The only black family the Robinsons have suffered and been targeted in The town of Boyd for generations. It takes Steel Edward Gray and his love for Aja Robinson and her family to see them through! The love they shared was deep and true! This was was a great epic romance with very HOT lovemaking scenes! Highly recommend this one and this authors works!

Steel and Aja

This book was different from your typical cowboy romance which I am really not a fan of. Racism was alive in small town Boyd and Aja and her brothers were the recipients. Steel came into town seeking to get away until he laid his eyes on Aja even though he was quite older. There was a mystery to be solved and drama throughout. Overall a good read.

Secrets....

Jamila Jasper wrote a good book. Aja was a strong woman based on what she had endured. Steel was strong, quiet and loyal and he was determined to protect Aja and her brothers but with Aja keeping secrets from Steel will he be able to save her I recommend this book to all.

I’m not sure how I liked this book. The sexual relationship with Steel and Aja was hot, but some of it was borderline questionable. He referred to her as his chocolate toy and she was kind of submissive when I thought she’d be a little harder to pull, but overall this book was a god easy read. I am interested in seeing more from the author

Loved the story

OMG a emotional rollercoaster ride. Aka was the best sister mother to the boys, she needed Steel. Loved he wasn't a asshole.
I heat that in 2017 we still have to live with folk believing that it okay to mistreated a person just because their black.

I chose this rating because this book was really good. The plot was really good. Even though it kind of dragged along . The storyline was good. There were some grammatical errors. But overall I enjoyed the book very much.

Well damn!

How freaking sexy are both Aja and Steel? It didn't take long for the hot and steamy to come up. I love how this touched upon sexual freedom, racism, classism and stigmas in general. Great job Ms. Jasper.
