Zack's eighteenth birthday was tomorrow. He was expecting a party. He needed to get away from the family cattle ranch as fast as he could. There was nothing for him at is home and he'd prefer facing the unknown to staying. He would go even if it meant he had to herd sheep.

Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.

The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.

As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.

My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"

Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.

I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)

"And what did the doctor say?"

"I'll ask him when we get back."

"Yes, you will."

I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.

Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.

So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.

The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.

Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.

Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.

Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.

They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.

It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.

They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.

Good story but mistakes take away from it

Too many mistakes. Wrong context of words. Words missing. Good story but too bad you have to read sentences twice before inputting another word for it make any sense.

Western Fiction

I read this but not sure why. The good guys were almost to good, except for killing all the bad guys. And the bad guys were really bad. No one was just so so. I got this as there were horses and dogs in it. I have several horses but have never heard of calling the color of a horse just -tan-. The only other mention of a horse color was black and brown. What happened to bay, sorrel, chestnut, palomino, buckskin - I could go on. And the dogs were Border Collies. I have 2. No description on color or what a BC dog looks like. Then there was the way the people just left the dogs to take care of the sheep, day and night. What happened to the sheepherders the always stayed with the flock. On top of not knowing his subjects the writer made lots of mistakes in his wording and which name to use when. Don't think I try any more by this writer.

How many people do you know who need to step away to see where they are going

The thing that highlights this book is the obstacles everybody is faced with being either challenges or road blocks. Petit does an outstanding job demonstrating the differences.

SHEEP, CATTLE, RAPE, ABUSE, GUNS, LOVE

I loved the character of Zack, sensitive, considerate, kind, hard working, polite, unselfish, a gentleman even as a boy, protective, a capacity to love, plus he had sand, grit; loved other characters that earned a full 5 STARS. Zach, his stepmother, & his 2 younger brothers were abused physically & mentally by his older brother, Aaron, oh not to forget their alcoholic father. After Zach has moved away he is written to urgently to return because Aaron is inflicting evil pain on them, it was urgent. Zack had to swim in an ocean of hate, prejudice, & ignorance about sheep ruining the land then cattle could never feed off it again; tricky things older men's brains & beliefs. Of course he made enemies causing 1 to charm a girl Zack loved & ended up raping her creating so much heartbreak for him and he had to give up his new home with the new couple he thought of as parents. It caught at my heart that this young man who seemed to give everyone everything he could always got the shaft. However, it seems in some books as in life some characters love beyond reason a person who I don't think actually deserves them straight off the bat, but I do accept it. As, he and his brothers deal with kidnappers trying to take over the home ranch before they finally leave for good, bringing a very young girl tied up with them to rape & hold for ransome. Zack & younger brothers now owners of the ranch have had enough & the entertaining interesting happenings gave me a big smile. You just love that he might be down heart wise but he doesn't stop his work or life; no matter what that might be.

I read a review that said this book was to fake because Zack could not possibly have done all the things at his young age. Obviously, I disagree! Just look back through history to see young men & women accomplished lots of things, some conquered kingdoms, armies. However, in the Old West many boys became men at 13 or 14 & were considered old men by the time they were over 21 years old just because of the experience they had. If you are in doubt just check out the true stories on some of the pioneer stock of our country.

Jake finally beat up his older brother Aaron and left him hurting even though Aaron started laughing

Zach was a tall skinny young man taller than his brother Aaron and he always took the lickings for his younger brother's Ben and Davie but he had that enough that day and decided to give Aaron some payback. He went in the house and sat down to dinner and Aaron came in not admitting how much he hurt from what Zack had done. Their father had gone off and married Millie on the spirit of the moment at the mercantile where they met and went to the courthouse for a quick wedding. She understood she was there to cook and clean and keep them things running smoothly and not any physical stuff with her husband Amos. She was a good cook so they had a filling meal. Her name was Millie and she was only 34. When Zack turned 18 he left the ranch to go out on his own since his brother Aaron was going to inherit the ranch as he was the oldest Zach was only the second son and wouldn't inherit anything from the ranch. He soon took up work with the Caghills Branch the circle c. Where they raise sheep and dogs to take care of the sheep. A lot of their house and bunkhouse needed work as they hadn't had any help for a long time. After he had been there a while after sharing time which about war is arms out he started growing and he was already at 6 ft when he arrived but he kept growing taller and broader putting on more muscle. Then Ian and Ennis got a letter from Ian's brother where he thrown his daughter out and was sending Lorna to him via the railroad. So they sent Zach to go get Lorna and on their way back from the station in Esperanza they ran into some bad characters that wanted to Rob them and hurt Lorna so Zack defended them and took them out. That's only the beginning of the danger adventures suspense and romance that were going to occur in this book.

Zack is the 14th book in a row that I have read that was written by C.J. Petit ...Absolutely love everyone of them... I can not put them dow ...as an 80 year old woman I have a heard time sleeping....I heard my son-in-law leave to go to work at 6:30 am when he drove by my house., I was still reading Zack... these are great books for people who grew up going to western movies , which I did, I can see the action in my mind like it is a movie as I read...THESE BOOKS SO FAR ARE VERY ADDICTIVE!!! My first book that I was reading The Return to HARDEMAN County... I
The book took place just north of me here in North Central Texas.... the main town they would go to is where my late husband went to buy feed for our cows!!! Now my son-in-law, grandson or granddaughter drive to buy feed for ranch...
So it was so much fun knowing where the town was there during the time setting of this book...Thank You CJ for the wonderful books, keep up the good work!!!

ZACH By C.J. PETIT

The characters in this story not only broke my heart at times, brought tears to my eyes and were so very full of life, that I almost felt like I was reading someone's diary. As usual, C.J. PETIT gives a wonderful story that just keeps on twisting and turning to the very end. If you're not reading his books 📚 , all I can say is that you are really missing out on one of the very best author's work being published on western fiction today. I read a lot of western history and his books are among the most factual in relation to the time and the attitudes of this particular era in American history. BRAVO 👏👏BRAVO!!!!!!!BRAVO I can't wait to take another ride with you when I read your next book.

If you like teenage romance and angst this might work for you. Lorna our 17 year old unwed mother love interest is a total space cadet and Zack our young Lothario thinks their biggest problem is he's too tall for her. Talk about the big M.

Would have liked our young hero better if he had looked out more for his younger abused and frightened brothers instead of solving the problems of everyone he meets outside his family. Even at the end he leaves his brothers with a former employer and goes off and buys himself a ranch and doesn't get in touch with them for months. Fortunately they run into him in town and get to continue their hero worship of big bro. Nope doesn't work for me. A soft 3.

15 Read

This is my 15th Petit book. Interestingly enough, it maybe my favorite. It details a young man from 18 to 20 finishing his growth, finding his true lifetime partner, overcoming obstacles physical and mental to a grand resolution.
There were a few spots where a good proof reader would have caught typos and one sentence that made no sense. Also at location 164 there's a reference to a alpha female wolf leading a 10-14 member pack, never would happen. Unless the female was alone with her pups, there would be a alpha male leading the pack.
Loved the book! Highly recommend it to western fans or romantics, I'm both, young or old, a nice read!

Crazy

What a start on this story . A woman marries a gutless man and becomes the stwp.mother of 3 boys o e who rules the roost because his mother turns her oldest son into a thoughtless bully who will hurt the stel.mother and his two you beat brothers because the only k e who can stop him is the next oldest brother who is running
Away k man g full well the the step.mother will be hurt by his oldest brother . Not a good start on any story to see this kind of beginning. The threats from Zack to his oldest brother to not hurt his step mother and hjs younger brothers rings ho!low based on his decision to run

Another great read by CJ Petit. The character was true to life and gripped my interest. I enjoyed the plot lines, problems, and solutions throughout the story. Some horrible sexual violence, but never too graphic, thank you. I never felt like Lorna deserved a man like Zack. Not one to ride the river with in my opinion. But Petit did a good job of later patching up her personal character while downgrading the competition. Tight dialogue and reasonable pacing throughout. Fun read, for sure. I'll try another of his works. Bravo! PKB

Good read

An entertaining read, but the author needs to edit his text, many errors which were annoying to me, but may not bother anyone else. Too much repeating of a scenario and names as well. The main character was somewhat larger than life, a little unrealistic. Hope I am not being to critical, it is a very entertaining novel that keeps your interest and I will probably read more of CJ Petit.

Another good read,

As usual this author continues to amaze me. I read many different types of stories but I have yet to find a book written by C J Petit that does not hold my interest from the first chapter to the end of the book. Grab your favorite cup coffee or whatever you drink and a snack and settle in for an awesome good story you won't want to put down until you finish.

C J Petit, that says it all.

My favorite western writer has done it again. They experienced some of the world's greatest family trauma. But the scars of the past did not stop when Zack met Lorna. Obstacles, fear and bad decisions continue to plague their every move, until...... You will love this book.

Love to read

I don't think I can put into words how much I enjoyed this book. It was so absolutely enjoyable! I love western books and even though I am 89 years old they are books I gravitate to and have since I was around 10 years old. Circumstances in life don't allow dreams to come true so reading is the next best thing. Thanks for creating this wonderful story.

Very good book

This book was well written. Some of the story is a little hard to believe as the main character is a very young man. Other than that this was a very good read. Would highly recommend it to all.

A GREAT STORY

What a great man the frontier boy became. With all the things
he had to overcome and go through , it"s a miracle Zach was
able to keep his wits about himself. He was a true cowboy

Another winner

When the name C.J. Petit is on the byline I know I'm in for a very good read. Yes, sometimes the good guys accomplish more than seems reasonable but then that can happen in real life now and again.

Nice book

As usual this author keeps the story moving at a fast pace. It is hard to put down. My only criticism would be Mrs Tate getting too friendly with Zach so soon after her husband's death. Otherwise all the rest was very believable.

Sweet, complicated, and non-stop

Looking for a good story with emotional underpinnings and a nearly perfect hero? This is it! You'll be amazed and heartened as you watch Zack grow from an overwhelmed youth and into a man with a plan. Well worth the reading.

Cowboy love story

This is a truly amazing story of true love and one's struggle with life's challenges. What a lesson in various characters both selfish, mean and the flip side, those that are so kind and caring for others. This story has a well deserved happy ending!

Heartwarming

Not a western in the classic sense, but nevertheless a tragic, heartwarming, good storyline. Still think a proof reader is required for spelling and grammar inconsistencies, also how did Maggie the collie bitch change name to millie? Liked the storyline so 5 stars

Trials and tribulations in western life shaped by character and true love. What a story and so filled with love, hate, contempt that even a blind person would easily understand what right looks like in life. Terrific and can't wait to begin a new C.J. Petit novel.
