Marrying Miss Marshal

Rate this book
She's no lady...

Danna Carpenter is town marshal. And a darn good one. Even if she has to handle saloon brawls and rustlers alone. Who needs deputies anyway? All right, she’d welcome the help if any of the men in town would offer it. When a bank robbery goes bad, she has no choice but to accept the help of a city slicker...

He’s on a quest for revenge.

Chas O'Grady came West in search of cattle rustlers and found himself on the trail of a killer--one who took everything from him. Crossing paths with the pretty marshal was happenstance, but he can't leave her deputy-less when she’s facing such grave danger.

Everything changes when Chas and Danna are stranded together in a snowstorm. The town council forces a marriage. And attraction turns to something more...

Will Chas give up his quest for revenge? Or will he lose the woman he loves forever?

MARRYING MISS MARSHAL is a Wild West marriage of convenience story.

I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars.

Marrying Miss Marshal is such a delight. I loved it. Fast-paced but one of the sweetest love stories I’ve ever read. Which is surprising when the heroine is a tall, strong, willowy girl who is tough enough to stomp out a bar brawl, ride straight into a cattle stampede to save the male hero, and then go after cattle rustlers and murderers.

Author Lacy Williams is brilliant in the way she fills out the characters, Danna Carpenter and Chas O’Grady, the tenderfoot detective that comes into town. Nothing stereotypical about these characters, but fully complex human beings with all the longings of any man and woman.

It’s not just that Danna wants to fill the shoes of her late husband, the Marshall, she wants all that entails the life of a woman—love, children, learning how to be feminine. As the reader we feel those emotions through both her and Chas.

This debut author has a great career before her. Her writing is wonderful, a voice that is soft at times, but packs such an emotional punch.

First, the cover is just gorgeous. Second, the book felt like it hinted at the Johnson County Cattle Wars, which are often misrepresented and rarely presented accurately (it wasn't in this book if that was indeed what the plot was pointing toward), so I really liked that as well.

The premise was quite interesting and I liked how Danna was determined to do what was right no matter what. She and Chas made a cute, if not awkward at times, couple. The story did feel a tad rushed in places and I don't feel that Chas' arc was fully flushed out. But the faith element was wonderful and I appreciated how realistic the characters were. And the antagonists! I did not anticipate how deep and far the deception spread. The author did well building the suspense.

If you like shorter Christian historical romances, try Marrying Miss Marshall.

Marrying Miss Marshall has a great combination of action, danger, and romance. I listened to this book through Audible and I had a great time following what was going on in the lives of Danna and Chas. I have enjoyed listening to this narrator before and I enjoyed most of her telling of the story. A couple of scenes where she had to read in a voice where a man was yelling were not really to my liking, but those were only a couple of times and otherwise I very much liked the narration.

This was a fun and enjoyable book. There are many misunderstandings between these two main characters. The guilt that Chas carries impacts many of his decisions. And the lack of self-confidence that Danna sometimes deals with in regards to how she feels as a woman keep her from understanding how others view her.

I thought the author did a good job of creating many twists and turns in the story and the way she tied everything up at the end was very nice. A sweet, western romance.

A fabulous debut novel!

As marshal of a rugged Wyoming town, Danna Carpenter had her hands full, especially since no one will serve as her deputy. Then citified detective Chas O’Grady comes to town and offers to team up with her if she’ll help him tack down a gang of cattle rustlers. But Danna and Chas rustle up more than cattle thieves, and two loners discover that being alone isn’t so inviting any more.

Lacy William’s fabulous debut novel is a perfect rollicking romance set in the Old West. From the heart-pounding beginning to a heart-tugging ending, Marrying Miss Marshall will have you crying and cheering, all in a span of a few chapters. An unconventional, independent heroine clashes with an overprotective, hurting hero, and in the process, saves a town. Lawmen, rustlers, stampedes, an ugly old dog, and a romance that brings tears to your eyes, Marrying Miss Marshall has it all.

This fast-paced love story contains Interesting and complex characters, including a strong heroine in an unconventional situation, well thought out plot, sweet romance, proving again that opposites can attract, and accurate time period descriptions of the wild west.

Grammatical errors in the Kindle version were distracting.

This book is able to stand on its own and builds up to a remarkable H.E.A. Would recommend to readers who enjoy this genre...

Danna Carpenter doesn’t understand why the town council of Calvin, Wyoming, elected her Marshal after her lawman husband died. They show her no respect and don’t support her efforts to catch a gang of rustlers. To make matters worse, city-boy Chas O’Grady arrives in Calvin and Danna has her hands full keeping him from getting hurt in his attempt to hunt down a murderer. Just when she’s getting used to O’Grady being her deputy, their relationship becomes more complicated and much more personal.

Marrying Miss Marshal is chock-full of excitement. From the opening scene of a life-threatening stampede to the last outlaw apprehended Lacy brings the action. And just when you think it’s safe to relax, she introduces complications between the Marshal and her Deputy like a forced marriage of convenience and a mysterious journal from someone in Miss Marshal’s past.

Lacy has gifted us with two intriguing protagonists and a lively town full of interesting characters. I hope to spend more time in Calvin, Wyoming, soon.

Not really my cup of tea. The romance wasn't inappropriate, but very centered around physical attraction. The characters were sometimes confusing, and I was never sure which side of them was going to come out in any given scene. There was enough backstory given that I thought I should be able to understand them, but I never felt like I connected or really cared. And the writing style just wasn't my preference. Nothing I can point to and say "this was bad", it just wasn't what I was looking for.

Simple and sweet, but maybe a bit too simple for my liking. I appreciated that this was a safe story and no real OP drama, but the quickness with which the heroine fell in love with the hero after her husband's death bothered me. The fact that the MCs weren't on the same page regarding their faith wasn't that great either. Other than those issues, I didn't find this story objectionable. However, it just wasn't that strong in the areas that counted.

I thought this was a cute love story. Sometimes I feel like books are just too long, like 100 pages too long.
I loved that it was clean and a historical aspect is always a nice change from contemporary.

This book reminded me of shuffling a deck of cards together in that it was the perfect melding of a highly unlikely romance with a murderous conspiracy. The author fits these two dramas together in a perfectly knit story of love, survival, revenge, and redemption.

Widow Danna Carpenter struggles as she inherits her role of town marshal from her murdered husband. City slicker Chas O'Grady is from a patrician Boston family and is hunting down cattle rustlers when he is overtaken by a stampede but rescued by Danna. Danna was a child bride, tough, primitive, illiterate but highly intelligent and totally unaware of her own femininity. Chas sees through all of that and this ultimate odd couple know they need each other to solve two terrible crimes that are somehow connected.

Although innocent of any wrong-doing they are declared "compromised" during a snow storm tracking bank robbers together and are forced into a marriage by the town council. The approach/avoidance chemistry between these two is scintillating and smoldering. Can they solve a complicated murderous conspiracy that involves tragedies from both of their backgrounds before they end up murdered themselves? This mystery, artfully combined with a most unusual romance, had me drawn in from the very first page.

This is a very good romance, which, although predictable, has some surprising twists in the plot. When Danna, marshal of the town of Calvin in the Wyoming Territory, rescues Chas, a man about to be trampled by a herd of stampeding cattle, she doesn't know that her life will be irrevocably changed from this point on. She is a good marshal and tries to do her job well, but she doesn't know about the deeply-hidden plot against her. She realizes that she is going to have to trust Chas to help her figure out what is really happening, and she has suspicions of her own about him. This is a well-crafted romance, with good characters, a good western setting, and unexpected plot twists.

Title: MARRYING MISS MARSHAL
Author: Lacy Williams
Publisher: Love Inspired Historical
August 2011
ISBN: 978-0-373-82881-4
Genre: Historical romance

Danna Carpenter is trying to fill the shoes of her late husband as town marshal. A super woman, she fights criminals, and is even earning the grudging respect of the town. So when she sees a tenderfoot about to get trampled by a cattle stampede, she thinks nothing about riding her horse into the fray, scooping the man up with one hand and tossing him behind her on the horse.

Chas O’Grady is supposed to be hunting for cattle rustlers, but not being the brightest crayon in the box, Chas is unable to obey even the simplest of instructions. “Stay here.” means to step off into the pitch black darkness and fall off the cliff causing him to dislocate his shoulder. And forcing Danna into another rescue.

When the town realizes the pair has been in a “compromising position,” they force them to wed. But will they survive long enough to find love?

MARRYING MISS MARSHAL is Lacy William’s debut book. A super-strong heroine, a hero who is definitely the polar opposite, and a rugged Wyoming landscape come together to make this a western straight from the movies. And not a block-buster one.

Okay—I admit to some questions. There are men in town. Why didn’t one of them step forward as Marshal since they didn’t respect her? I won’t go into the other things that crossed my mind, except to say “It’s in the script” or “It’s fiction…” But to me, it was unbelievable.

If you like western historical romances, then you might be interested in MARRYING MISS MARSHAL. Discussion questions are included at the end of the book. $6.75. 279 pages.

Straight from the start, the reader knows that this is an original historical western romance because Ms. Danna Carpenter is the marshal of the little town of Calvin, she is dressed as a man which says a lot about her with out having to explain anything. This is a time when women's roles in society are fixed and inflexible, so there is something shady about Danna being asked to be the lawman. She starts off by saving the life of a stranger, Chas O'Grady. There is a lot of mentions of the connection between the two, but I didn't feel like there really was anything except the words of the author. This has a lot of story but I didn't feel the attraction between the H/h.
Danna doesn't know how to cook, sew, make bread, wear a dress, etc... all the womanly talents were never learned because she was raised by an older brother and orphaned very young. She does know how to incapacitate a drunk and she is a sharpshooter, but she is still a woman trying to do a man's job at a time when that was far from being acceptable (too bad when she is clearly able!).
This is a clean inspirational 'christian' romance but it is really light and no heavy handed religious testimony is hitting you in the back of the head like some other authors. So there is no sexy scenes, just a kiss or two and the rest is hinted. I didn't feel like this story needed any hot sexy action because there is a lot of plot and intertwining mysteries and even more history that gets resolved for Danna and Chas.

While a unique concept, a lot of this book felt forced. I had a pretty hard time buying a female marshall in the 1880s, but appreciated the uniqueness enough to keep reading. But nothing really brought me into the world. The romance was extremely sudden, and it kind of felt like all the passages about attraction had been pulled from other books and randomly placed about to make the attraction seem more heated than it was naturally. I got irritated that Danna only ever got defensive and didn't stand up for herself really or gain the confidence that I was waiting for, and the marriage of convenience trope was thrown in so suddenly that I thought it was a bad joke at first, and I hated that they gave in so easily to the random pressure from people. And all the action scenes felt like they were just taken from Western movies, right down to her lowering the gun he had pointed at the bad guy. Also, why did the townspeople stand up for her only after she was successful? It makes all of their sudden friendships seem superficial.

Lacy Williams has quickly become one of my favorite authors. I’ve read a few of her contemporary books, and I was excited to start her historical series. Marrying Miss Marshal was a sweet romance, a tale of two very different people connected by the same group of bad guys. I loved witnessing the way they came together and watching as the slow-burn romance unfolded.

One thing that bothered me was the lack of communication where upholding the law was concerned. For example, Chas overheard a very important conversation and could have prevented something catastrophic from happening, but…he didn’t. The bad guys were clear who they were from the beginning, so that wasn’t much of a surprise.

However, I did enjoy the book overall, and it was fun to see Lacy Williams writing in another genre than of what I’ve read so far. I would be interested to see how the rest of the books tie in with the exciting world the author has created.

This is a wonderful first novel by Lacy Williams. She has a flow to her writing that keeps the reader involved in the story. I loved Danna. She is a strong and independent woman who shows no fear when it comes to the job she is commited to doing. But she hides away the softer side of herself and the fears that lie within her heart. Chas is a man who holds himself responsible for something beyond his control and carries that with him along with the hatred towards the one who really is responsible. Can he allow the Lord to be the judge and jury or will he take justice into his own hands? Will Danna find her true worth hidden behind a "mans" job and clothing? You will have to read Marrying Miss Marshal to find out. I look forward to more books by this wonderful writer.

I wasn't a fan of the idea of a "Miss Marshal" concept, which seems historically accurate, but it was actually well-done - more so than I expected. I liked both Danna and Chas, and I felt the plot progressed well and was interesting (if a little confusing at times).

I felt that the writing was amateurish, especially the description. Danna and Chas's relationship was a little juvenile.

It was pretty clean. There were a few kisses. The townsfolk accuse Danna and Chas of inappropriate relations based on the fact that they camped out alone together while searching for the bad guys (nothing actually happened). A mention of childbirth. Some mild violence.

Overall, not an amazing book, but it wasn't terrible. More personal preference than anything.

this was my first love inspired and i really enjoyed it. loved the characters and plot. and as i usually end up saying, loved wrong tree and would've like to have read more about him. i was definitely surprised who the cattle rustler turned out to be. rescues, gunfights, and cattle rustlers, can't ask for more. very descriptive writing style.
additionally, i liked that there was a discussion guide, there were some interesting questions. overall, great plot, characters, and setting. can't wait for another. (i would love to hear about katy!)

In a Man's World

Great story of a woman with every disadvantage making her way in a man's world. DeAnna is headstrong and smart, but she keeps tumbling into trouble. Luckily Chas is there to bumble his way around helping her. The two fight the attraction, but it can't be helped that they're perfect for each other.

Great clean read. Interesting story, lots of twists. I appreciated that the main characters were believable, likable and flawed. I loved the epilogue. :)

Wow! I loved this book, a strong heroine who never takes a backward step. The author did a wonderful job to ensure the hero wasn't overshadowed by Danna although this was very much her story.

A really strong debut and I'm looking forward to this author's next release :-)

A Woman in a Mans JobFilling the shoes of her late husband as town marshal hasn't been easy for Danna Carpenter. She's not only fighting criminals, she's also fighting to earn the respect of the townspeople. So crossing paths with tenderfoot detective Chas O'Grady is the last thing she needs.

So, I think this was my first book from Lacy Williams and definitely like her writing and her story building.

So, in this book, Danna, also known as the Marshall, is left with the responsibility of upholding the law after her husband died. Keeping the town of Calvin safe seems more challenging than she thought when all the men in town refuse to work with her as deputies. Chas O'Grady just got into the town looking to solve a case in the area, and after having a brief but intense interaction with the Marshall, he still can't understand or agree with why a woman would risk her life everyday. Still, when the problem arises, he finds himself working as her deputy and wanting to protect her in more ways than he imagined, but can they both overcome their individual challenges and still have a chance?

So, this was a very sweet, but intense book. I actually liked it more than I thought I would since we have the "force to marry" trope 😁.

No, but honestly speaking, I did like the book... and I have to say that Lacy Williams knows how to keep me on edge.

We do see faith content, which was good, but for some reason, I did feel that the main characters were not the ones relying on God. You do see a little bit at the end, but it was never the books focus (in my opinion).

The romance though... I've got several things to say about it. So, I did like Chas and Danna together, but honestly I think that the amount of time that Danna had been widowed was too short. I know that everybody is different and the author does explain that she did love Chas, but I still think everything happened too sudden.

Also, I might not be able to understand Chas' feelings towards everything that he lived and with everything happening with Danna, but he exasperated me too much.

Now that I'm done poruing out all my thoughts about the book, I think the rating has changed a little 😅. Still, I did like the book and will probably read the whole series little by little.

I purchased a copy of the clean historical western romance Marrying Miss Marshal: Wild Wyoming Hearts Book 1 {Wind River Hearts book 1} by Lacy Williams and this review was given freely.
An attraction soon after first sight novel with a good plot with an atypical lead female role for the old west, a small town's conspiracy, bank robbery, cattle rustling and revenge. It's a bit repetitive but ends happily.
The illiterate twenty four year old recently widowed Calvin, Wyoming Marshal, Danna Carpenter and her horse King rescue Boston born private detective Chas O'Grady from a stampede.

An instant attraction romance where three diverse characters become friends and more as they travel west at Christmastime.
When broke and recently released 25 year old swindler Jesse Baker leaves prison to fulfill a promise and rebuild his life in Chicago, he didn't expect to find himself the protector of the runaway socialite Erin O'Grady who is bound to visit her brother Chas in Calvin, Wyoming or the target of the young and malnourished petty thief Pete.

I purchased a copy of the clean historical western romance Cowboy Pride: Wild Wyoming Hearts{Wind River Hearts book 3} by Lacy Williams and this review was given freely.
This nod to Pride and Prejudice takes place two years after Marrying Miss Marshal and contains many of the names of the characters from the popular novel but some relationships and character roles are different. The unfiltered mother Bennett is set to marry off her four daughters and doesn't care who hears her plans. Janie and Bingley as well as Liza and Darcy are attracted to each other but the perils of the old west and broken relationships add twists, turns and interest to this version.
